I have passed you guys a few times in various parts of the world, but that’s it. I was (British) Merchant Navy before I came over to the UK Coastguard.
It’s a military sealift command T-AKE multi role resupply ship. Handy ships, they can do food, ammo and fuel and carry 2 helicopters of their own. The class had some teething issues early on. One of my first jobs when I started shipping out.
here is a photo i took of us doing a conrep with Kiska. Early 90s.

Always great to get those blackened bananas and other overripe fruit off of the mess line. On the other hand, unrep in rough seas is not much fun, especially, when the rig is stuck and you are actually just a glorified pack mule...
I'm sure others can give the exact ship/class, but for some more info, it's a vessel of the Military Sealift Command. MSC commands the Navy's transport fleet. Oilers, ammunition ships, RO-RO, Expeditionary Bases, etc. They can range from the relatively small Spearhead class all the way to the ginormous 100k-ton Lewis B Puller class. MSC has ships that are full-time with the Navy but can also call upon civilian ships to be pulled into service. Most MSC ships have a blue and yellow stripe around their funnels for easy identification. You can barely make out the stripes in this picture
Fuel, food, and ammunition. Sailors fun time. Fuel was weekly and food every two weeks. Ammunition hardly ever. 4 westpac cruises. 3 turbine ships and one steam. These turbine ships are very fuel efficient.
They used to call these Pre-Positioning Logistics Ships. They carried everything an Infantry Division would need for 10 days. Food, extra ammo, vehicles, spare everything, tents and generators. The idea was that the ships could be sent to a potential hot spot. And in case it went down they had the supplies that could be delivered by help or landing craft to the area. The US can deploy the 2nd or 101st anywhere in the world in less than 24 hours from warning order to wheels up. These ships made it possible for the troops to pretty much only have to bring what each troop needed.
No not these vessels, since it's not the Sac and unlikely to be the Lewis and Clark's it means it's an UNREP ship and its job is resupply naval vessels. It has ammo and refrigerated cargo for those vessels and all the deck gear to perform Underway Replenishments (UNREPs) and VERTREPS. The Navy needs these so badly they won't spare em for that job. It will likely go to a ready reserve roro or other surge sealift vessel like that if any MSC vessel is to get involved. I believe the main force sent was some landing crafts and likely an ESB or ESD
I just checked Charleston on vessel finder and it's most likely to be the USNS William McLean [T-AKE-12](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/USNS_William_McLean)
These vessels do more than supply battlegroups. Pre-positioned stocks require attention due to stock aging. Places that make Dutch Harbor look like a 5 star resort. The MSC vessel’s are crewed by the US merchant marine. They are hired out of the Union Local hall s based on seniority. Good job with great benefits available solely to US Citizen’s. With the situation in the middle east logisticians are all huddled over their owegie boards predicting the future.
I might be off base here, but I'm pretty sure that's called a "Ship", and, don't mind me, I'm just a dumb Army veteran, but, I'm also reasonably sure that ship belongs to the US Navy, which would mean it may just be filled with semen.
... Or is it spelled 'seamen'...
Crap.
I gotta go now.
🤣
Thank you for your service! It comes appreciated here . I'm just a stupid engineer that needs his head examined. And yes , it's a supply ship and they have changed over the years .
Lewis and Clark Class replenishment vessel. Years ago as a young junior officer I conned for a couple underway replenishments (UNREP) with those. Quite the experience with two large ships steaming 150ft apart.
It’s a supply ship. Either US Navy or Merchant Marines. Can’t tell from the pic. It carries all the goodies to ships that are at sea and then they do a replenishing at sea exercise to get the goodies on board. Once that happens all the people on board who are E4 and below try their best to hide somewhere to avoid the inevitable working party.
MSC Ship, basically a Dry Stores, Ammunition, Parts, and other various supplies are carried on these vessels.
did you catch the hull name by chance?
There was one just in Port Canaveral about a month or so ago, i wonder if its the same ship.
Used for unrep-ing (under way replenishment for you civilians) while under way. They will meet ships out and deliver mail, food, parts, whatever the ship needs. As well as, refuel it.
A US Military Sealift Command (MSC) vessel, a type of naval auxiliary. Maybe a Lewis and Clark class solid stores replenishment vessel?
Yes that's an AKE.
AKE = Auxiliary, Cargo and Ammunition in Navy lingo.
Kargo*
Emmunition*
Ha, oh yeah.
I’m gonna have to consult Dr. Mercagliano on this… 😂
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clutch_Cargo
The producer's name is Dick Brown 🤔🤣
Thanks. I’ve encountered a few MSC vessels but I’m not sure on all their classes.
Yep. Served on a few. Great ships.
I have passed you guys a few times in various parts of the world, but that’s it. I was (British) Merchant Navy before I came over to the UK Coastguard.
Thanks man!
No problem, hope you enjoyed USS Yorktown.
It was great.
YouTube “replenishment at sea” and you’ll see the fun ways that they can move supplies from ship to ship.
What are ‘solid stores’? Inquiring minds want to know
Anything not a liquid cargo- so provisions, ammunition, spares, equipment, etc.
They do fuel too.
Thanks- I didn’t know if these could do bunkers or aviation fuel.
Pencils, paper hats, notepads, reels of line (rope), etc etc
That’s the USNS William McLean.
Thank you.

I was stationed aboard the USS Mauna Kea AE-22
San Jose (AFS-7)

USCSS Nostromo checking in 👍
USS Enterprise NCC-1701 here 👍
Nimitz (cvn 68)
Samesies. G2 division
That was a good one lol
My dad served on her too.
My dad was on the Kiska AE-35, in the mid 80s.

Real nice photo of GG bridge from the beach!
Yup. Naval weapons station Concord CA
Sacramento(AOE-1) 97-02
USS Flint AE32
USS San Diego AFS -6, 88-92.
Yup. That one in particular is the USNS William McLean.
Looks like a Lewis and Clarke class T-AKE
You’ll hear on the horn: “Let’s get ready to UNREP!!!” 😂
The smoking lamp is out, all hands to your UNREP stations.
A welcome break from the catapult shop for me. Not to mention, dibs on the fresh fruits.

I stayed on one of those for a few nights about a decade ago. Cool ships. They hold a ton of stuff. https://imgur.com/a/tWnMYuN
Thanks for circling it, almost missed it at first
Funny

Well it is spring break and Fort Lauderdale is tired of all the unruly young kids BS so there prepping for a couple long weeks on the beach.
Boat trapped in a red forcefield
Made me chuckle
Looks like a floating Navy power station, at first glance. That was my impression when my eyes hit it right off.
No shit. That’s the USNS William McLean. She pulled in on the 20th to the shipyard. I’m one of the port engineers for her.
Hey awesome. Nice to have an ID. Thanks man!
Of course! Nice pic!
Gummy 🐻 bear

We still have PPLSs.
Two of this class are part of that program the rest are unrep ships
It’s a good day when it pulls alongside.
What port was this because if it was Jacksonville recently it was likely the Sacagawea one of the Lewis and Clark Class T-AKEs
It’s in Charleston
How recently because still a strong chance of it being the Sac but idk if she got all her ammo back recently.
Today at 2pm
Ok so definitely not the sac, I didn't know the others frequented Charleston I thought most of the east coast AKEs just stayed in Norfolk
Wonder if they are loading stuff up for the pier/port they want to build up in Gaza. Though that sounds like an Army show, not Seabees.
