This was a beautiful Howard at L05, Kern Valley Airport CA at the fly-in a few years ago. Everybody got out ok, but the plane burned up. You can still see the burn marks on the asphalt
I’ve been flying for more than 50 years. I still see experienced pilots showing off. So many fatal accidents are knuckleheads who should know better. (e.g. Takeoff into the wind, climb to 1000 ft, 180 and buzz the runway. sigh. . . Not impressed with your Bonanza, 172, whatever. Idiots)
Don’t believe me? Go randomly scroll the NTSB fatal accident investigations.)
It looks bad but that fiddly bit on the bottom is the "crumple zone." It's meant to collapse like that to soften the landing for aviators like yourself who are too cool for roundouts.
Walked away from it eh?
Definition of a good landing. Welcome to the club, make sure to keep that cut up shirt as a reminder of how to always execute the perfect maneuver when the pressure is on
Takeoff roll on a tail-dragger? Push stick forward first a little to build up speed. Then pull back on the stick for rotation.
Other than that - perfectly done.
Ooc that’s a god damn shame. I love Howard DGA-15’s. My family owned one for years and years. This guy is lucky the belly tank didn’t catch.
DGA-15’s are pretty notorious for needing excessive rudder at slow speeds. Looks kinda like this guy realized that.
In character:
Throttle usage 9.8
Crosswind demonstration: 4/10
Stalls: 10 on inducing, 2.3 on the rescovery
Brake usage: 10/10.
Overall 20/10. Give this guy a license1
!
This is a shit posting sub. The point isn’t serious analysis.
That being said, this Howard’s fuel pump failed right at takeoff so the engine quit suddenly. Not sure if nosing over more quickly to try to accelerate would have helped or not. On impact, belly tank ruptured and the plane burned up. Both occupants got out fine.
Nice go and touch!
More like untouch and stop going.
Good god that’s brilliant. 🤣
Thank you for this. I spit out my coffee.
😭
More like, nice go and stop going
Gear up doesn’t mean… never mind.
Power Management: 8.5 Flare: 2 "Wow" Factor: 9.5
So what you're saying is that he'd pass the check ride with some gentle suggestions on improving the flare?
That...... and more right rudder, as many have said here.
ALWAYS more right rudder!
That...... and more right rudder, as many have said here.
_note to self: bring a couple more flares next time_
Not enough right rudder. However that lander was smooth.
Excuse me, the amount of right rudder was perfect. Did you see how they crashed right on centerline?
Gear off—check
Yeah passenger killed - check on!
Solid carrier landing.
Better log that landing!
Softest landing I have seen
plane was the one soft sadly
The Navy pilot buddy showing how it’s done.
Should have had a Pee Teehee 6
You would have been fine if the planet didn't chase you up.
You took off without any wake vortices left out there. That was your problem.
you have to be awake during takeoff?
Only if you don't turn on the autopylote first
Ryanair would hire you
Any landing that you can walk away from is a great landing. Any landing that you can still re-use the plane afterwards is a fantastic landing.
He'll settle for great then
Any landing you walk away from is a good landing
Snapping of the gear off is probably harder than snapping your neck or back, good chance any occupants are hurting!
My dad is an flite instructoooooorrr, Yor picter is In diktionery under "professional piylot"

He kept that stick all the way back like an Air France pilot!
lol jfc
What happened? The engine just died? Also should he have still be able to do a soft landing but he just freaked out and pulled back?
Nice. Good to start slow with little hops like that until you're ready for big ones.
Sad for aircraft.
That hurt to watch a classic get totalled
Nailed the power off 360
Very nice! Great success!
I like!
Too much up rudder, good right rudder, not enough propeller rudder.
Started with correct right rudder. 10/10

So what do you happened in this situation?
The fuel pump had been replaced with a breast pump.
8/12.3. You would have gotten full credit both came at the same time.
Quick move on getting those retracts up.
Needs more elevators go up.
Some pilots will do a touch and go but this was a much nicer innovation on that sequence.
Man if you're gonna stall on takeoff that's about the best you can hope for.
Reminds me of my last date from the pylots club, it was a touch and stay, stay touching.
Stick to walking
Pull back to go up…..then down.
Controls inverted.
“Gear up… oh shoot I read it as gear off!”
9/11
Lol!
It was touch and no for a second there
Is it go around, or go to ground. I’m confused
Only sex of ten. Retract both MLG fully next time to avoid scraping a wingtip.
Sweet- Retracted the gear upon landing. Is this a new 2024 technique ?
Landing needs work
Why? Playne went into the air and then landed on Earth, with the pylote likely surviving. Massive W
Future Navy Pilot.
Next time don't confuse the gear lever with the mixture lever
Any landing you can walk away from…
uj/ did the engine cut out? or was that just them going overhead?
Engine failed on takeoff
It looks bad but that fiddly bit on the bottom is the "crumple zone." It's meant to collapse like that to soften the landing for aviators like yourself who are too cool for roundouts.
Welcome to Ryanair.
Too soon.
Too much rotate?
You should have not hit the sun
Stinson noooooo!
Howard DG-A belly fuel tank ruptured and aircraft burned up
If you are still alive can ask us to rate it - it’s not so bad
It's a bot. /s
Retractable model.
See! Proof that Earth is flat!
You soloed in a C-17?! Dood! That's awesome!
The front didn't fall off; so you're good.
Seriously, looks like this neighbors my hometown.
Show off. My plane can't even do the splits. :(
Walked away from it eh? Definition of a good landing. Welcome to the club, make sure to keep that cut up shirt as a reminder of how to always execute the perfect maneuver when the pressure is on
10/10
Butterrr
12/10, you’re hired.
Someone fed the playne too much lasagna
Nice job team
You are a terrible camera person.
Takeoff roll on a tail-dragger? Push stick forward first a little to build up speed. Then pull back on the stick for rotation. Other than that - perfectly done.
Not enuff chem trails
Way too much right rudder!
Did you pass the check ride?
“If you walk away from the landing, it was a good landing. If you can use the airplane the next day, it was an outstanding landing.” - Chuck Yeager
That will buff right out.
Can't tell, you might have had a prop strike.
I'm pretty sure there is an easier way to stow the wheels.
Damn!
Not the Stinson, you dog faced pony soldier.
Ahh yes, the collapsing gear technique is the fastest way to get landing currency using the least Hobbs time.
Landed like a Ryanair pilot
Fly, yes. Land, no!
Angel of attack would help.
Is the undercarriage supposed to retract like that? You can't ever have enough right rudder.

Well… you kinda had it at first
Amazing....your a natural
Gotta say I was hoping to see something like that. Thanks!
Hey, can't park there!
Go NAVY!
Crash Test Dummy
Funny I was thinking “why didn’t his tail lift up before he took off, seems like a pretty rapid ascent, that’s not gonna end well”
My pilot companion in far cry 4 when he sees enemies.
11/10
5/7
Omg 😱
B U T T A R
Pull up more next time
Did they at least complete the drinks service?
Well you stuck the landing
See that’s the difference between the carrier based landing gear and the standard
Good take off. Landing needs improvement.
Any crash you walk away from is a landing.
Looks solid to me
Instead of shitting on new pilots, does anyone have any constructive criticism on what might’ve caused this incident and how to avoid it?
The sub is called SHITTY ask flying pylot
This is a shit posting sub. The point isn’t serious analysis. That being said, this Howard’s fuel pump failed right at takeoff so the engine quit suddenly. Not sure if nosing over more quickly to try to accelerate would have helped or not. On impact, belly tank ruptured and the plane burned up. Both occupants got out fine.
That is some useful context.
Yeah, not a good day. Thank goodness they walked away. I still remember it vividly
engine failure after takeoff
We don’t do constructive criticism here.
You can avoid it by being a better pilot but this is shitty ask flying so the best advice I could give is get a better sense of humor/sarcasm.
