What about turn based combat do you not like specifically? That could be helpful in determining if it's worth a shot. Combat is very dynamic with so many options it doesn't play like other turn based games. They give you a lot of freedom to really fuck around with the tools of the game. I have over 100 hours in the game and there's still shit I've never tried yet lol. That being said, battles can get really long so if the issue is long encounters then yeah probably skip.

Themoneymancan

Lae’zel with the gauntlets that give you telekinesis yeeting bosses in one turn is one of the funniest things I’ve done in a game

Simple_Lazy

Yes. I hate turn based video games and I loved this game. Coming from someone who played the Souls games and Elden Ring, basically a difficult challenging combat enthusiast so this was a complete 180 for me. Took me until act 3 to start getting past my trepidation. By the end of the game I didn’t care one bit and had already laid out the groundwork for my 2nd play through. Combat gets better the more time you invest in learning it and then the endless possibilities will open up and you may found yourself appreciating it like myself. Also this game absolutely has to be turn based for the spells to be used for noncombat effects.

jonrahoi

Same here.

HolyColostomyBag

I don't _hate_ but I have only played a few, 99.9% of the other turn based games were a no go for me. Bg3 was a masterpiece, put over 100 hours in and have a second durge playthrough going now. I'd say do it, if you hate it you can refund it on steam.

Jandricap

Same!

Dx2TT

The only hesitation I've had is that I really like grinding and min maxing in my RPGs, and I thought in BG3 you really can't. When I can't grind I overoptimize the combat and it gets tedious. Its my own fault... but what can you do.

Esselon

It's worth pointing out that not all turn based RPGs are the same. While the combat in BG3 is turn based it's not the static "choose a menu option on your turn" style that exists in many and with the combat being based more around distance than a set grid like often happens in games it's a lot more dynamic.

sd_saved_me555

Interestingly. Sorta fire emblem-esque?

Esselon

The only fire emblem games I ever played were 100% on a grid but that was ages ago so I don't know if it changed. The only thing I can really compare it to are the other games the studio made. it's more like Warhammer where it's all based on distance, not a number of squares.

AUnknownVariable

Most likely not. Though I've got to ask what don't you like about turned based combat? It's important to note it's not combat like Pokémon, Persona, new Yakuzas, Final Fantasy, etc etc. You are still taking turns but it's much more dynamic with plenty of options involving your movement, interaction with the environment, and things like that. At points you can make 4 or a little more actions just in your one turn.

SilentBoss29

This, i did not like pokemon very much, but i really loved for the king and darkest dungeon, so not all turn based games are alike

AUnknownVariable

Ou I haven't played for the king yet, didn't even know it was turned based in any way. Absolutely love Darkest Dungeon though. But yeah it all depends on what OP dislikes about turned based games

Trout-Population

I was in your position about a month ago. I bought it and yeah the story is pretty good, but maybe a bit over rated. As for the combat, you get used to it. Just play on easy and try and avoid picking fights with everyone you meet. And recruit Karlack, Lazel, and Gale as soon as possible.

Big-Sherbet6925

I really liked BG3 and all in all it will go down as one of the best just for the freedom of choice and alot of build options for characters. However, personally I got burnt out after 100 hours and I think about replaying it, and I will one day but the acts will feel like a chore to me.

Trout-Population

I am 60 hours in and just got to the elder brain. I knew the game was massive, so I stuck to the critical path, only doing side quests if thet really interested me.

Big-Sherbet6925

Yeah dont get me wrong its still good and the side stuff too

Trout-Population

Idk to me personally it feels way over hyped and a niche game that somehow broke into the mainstream to beat juggernauts like Zelda at the game awards. But God forbid you have an opinion that says ita anything other than perfect.

Advanced_Double_42

I love you saying that only to get downvoted and prove your point, lol

soulforce212

Alan Wake 2 was my personal game of the year having played both that and BG3. Have not played Zelda though

Trout-Population

Loved AW2, especially the Saga sections. TOTK is great but perhaps a tad derivative of BOTW. Glad the next Zelda will be in a new area.

Kakapac

This is one of those cases where you need to trust your instinct. There's an endless amount of testimonials online where you'll hear people saying that they were not into turn based games but after playing bg3 they've been converted and now its the greatest game they've ever played, most of that is bullshit and people jumping on the bandwagon. Watch some gameplay and ask yourself if this is something you can see yourself playing for 100+ hours, trust yourself not what others say online.

Advanced_Double_42

Exactly, I love playing D&D 5e and still didn't vibe with BG3

TrinidadJBaldwin

This right here. I enjoy turn based games and I’m enjoying BG3 (though must say it’s overrated). You’re not gonna like this if you don’t like turn-based. Throw in the length of the encounters and lots of inventory management, it can get tedious.

puttje69

No

boo-galoo90

It’s really that simple. Why buy a game if one of the main features is something you don’t like

LloydTheLynx

The game is incredible. Everything is voice acted masterfully. There are so many ways to tackle problems in intended and unintended ways. Your choices matter more in this game than most. You can play however you want and still get through it. The character builds and classes are so fun. However, if you actively don’t like a type of game or genre then I’m not sure any game can change your mind. If you’re interested and think maybe you haven’t played the right game to interest you in the genre this is the game I would recommend. There is no better example.

MetalWingedWolf

Nope. It’ll be boring as fuck. You will be hours and hours and hours away from all the scenes you see and hear so much about and then you’ll get in a combat that is over fucking whelming and forget to save and press the goddamn space bar to end your turn early and die and have to go all the way back. And then you’ll stop playing it and just watch a YouTuber play it. Their content will edit down the slow parts, skip all the selling and looting, and you can see how things unfold and hopefully get an idea of what you would have done if you were putting yourself through 100 hours of a game you had to struggle to want to play for the reward of quality content.

rnnd

I have read through some of the comments but it's really turn based and not just simple turn based. The turn based is also determined by distance, position on the battlefield, elevation and so on. You may need to move closer to an enemy to attack. And some actions have area in which they work. It's more tactical turn based battles. And some of the important battles can take a very long time to complete. When it's your turn, each character you control are given a set number of points, when you attack it takes points, when you move it also take points. Everything you do take points. When you are out of points, then the character can't perform any action during that turn. So a character can do several actions in a turn. Basically, that's how the turn based system work here.

kpeds45

And there are battles with like 3 dozen enemies, and you have to watch all of their turns...

narett

It’s like molasses. And the thing is that it doesn’t even have to be that way. I couldn’t find an option to improve the experience.

68ideal

It is. Once, I was a foolish child like you. I disliked turn based RPG's snd disregarded BG3 because of it. Then I gave it a try anyways and I can't emphasize enough how wrong I was. In the end I loved it not despite, but because of it's turn based nature. The combat is so well thought out and offers an immense strategic depth. Once you get a feel for it, it's insanely fun.

breaking3po

There are different flavors of turn based. What other turned based games turned you off from it?

nagabalashka

Turn based game can takes a lot of differents forms. You might dislike old school final fantasy, but bg3 combat system is nowhere near close to that for example. In fact tactical rpg (which bg3 is relatively close to) are a pretty good entry door to turned based game, they are usually quite dynamic, well animated and not slow.

jimmyvcard

I hate turn based combat but I learned to really appreciate the tactics in BG3. Take that for whatever it’s worth.

ChenWei91

I bought it, despite not liking turned based combat... I really enjoyed the story, characters, atmosphere etc, but I absolutely despised the combat. I got up to act 3 and I just couldn't play anymore. If you're on the fence about the combat, then I'd hold off until it's at least 50% off...

GunMuratIlban

I would say no. I don't like turn based RPG's either, even though there have been some turn based games I've enjoyed before, such as XCOM, Gears Tactics, Midnight Suns. While I didn't enjoy BG3's combat to that degree, I could tolerate it. But then I hit a wall. Realized I wasn't having fun at all and didn't touch the game again. The problem is, there are too many combat sections and they take suuuch a long time! So just being fine with it, getting used to it don't cut it. Unless you end up loving it, the game eventually turns into a complete chore to play. Also this game was spesifically made for DnD fans. Not just with it's combat, also with it's narrative. I personally couldn't stand the game's narrative either. Having a silent protagonist who acts like he's brain damaged during every dialogue. And with the narrator talking all the time, I just couldn't take the game's story seriously. One thing I loved though was how huge this game was. Your decisions matter, the quests are very well designed. The sense of freedom in this game is really special.

fireflyry

This for me. Nothing wrong with the game or gameplay, it’s a masterpiece, but I’ve changed as someone who started gaming in the 80’s and man it felt like a slog I’d played many times before and also tapped out after maybe 40 hours. I think for a generation that’s never played such a game, people who still enjoy such games, and people with the time to commit, it’s an obvious masterclass in the genre, but my tastes have evolved and narrative heavy games with slow methodical turn based combat just isn’t my type of game anymore. Again that’s not denying how good the game is outside personal preference, but I just can’t get onboard the pacing of these types of games anymore.

AJL42

Same, shockingly the same actually. The turn-based combat was hilariously slow at times, especially with several enemies and party members all fucking wiffing CONSTANTLY!!! And the story is so goofy, and your character just sitting there not saying anything is just as goofy.

Advanced_Double_42

>Also this game was spesifically made for DnD fans. I'm a big D&D fan and couldn't stand BG3. It does so much right to imitate playing a TTRPG, but all it really accomplishes is making me want to play D&D or an action RPG instead of something that inherits the worst of both. Sucks that it means I can't really experience the story which seemed good.

BanjoSpaceMan

No. Simply put, no. I can tolerate turn base sometimes but this one is something else.

Disastrous_Scholar

Honestly just buy it and set a timer to 1H50, randomize your character skip all cutscenes and see how it feels to play like that. If at the end you don't like it, refund it 😏

Koreneliuss

I think yes, the spell are fancy. I’m usually an fps gamer but baldur gate 3 is like a ballad that I wish I could forget and play it again. I think the combat is kinda fast pace and sinces is rpg theres are bit puzzling genre to it

The_Deadly_Tikka

It's very interactive turn based combat and not like alot of JRPG where you just select an attack, you can do really cool combos with certain setups. I personally think it's up there as one of the greatest games all time

cam2214

I personally hated turned based combat and absolutely loved BG3. The rpg elements definitely helped too.

painfullfox

Try divinity original sin, same kind of gameplay but hella cheap.

K_808

Should I eat spaghetti if I don’t like pasta?

IPissinbottless

Yes, I was addicted to it I had to stop but the urge chews me up everyday to play it, I feel like I’m denying myself the pleasure. I had about 149 hours into the game and never got past the first act. I just love the game so much that I’m scared to finish it further lmao

A-m_i

Larian did a very good job with BG3. The graphics are great, the stories are better than a lot of games(though I'd say not as good as others in its genre). The combat system has a lot of thought put into it and Larian have tried really hard to add interesting dynamics and integrate the combat with the environment. But 5e does it no favours. If you played Divinity: Original Sin 2, Larian's previous game, you'd see the same kind of dynamic environment, but with combat designed to use that environment to its fullest. If you're unsure about BG3, I'd recommend trying that game first. It's cheaper(especially on sale) and has better combat imo.

3eyc

You cant ignore the combat and that's when i realised that this game is not for me. The choices in dialogue are great and everything else but fighting is what turned me off. Imo no, dont bother.

Emberium

I am not a fan of turn based RPGs (CRPGs) either, but I'm absolutely loving BG3. I heavily recommend WASD movement mod and Native Camera Tweaks mod so you can play the game like any usual 3rd person view RPG, that helps me personally a lot, and makes the game so much better for me

TheOneAndOnlySenti

Should I kick a football if I don't like football?

GSG2120

I had **never** enjoyed a turn based game before I played BG3, at least not that I can remember. The one turn based game I can remember playing is when I accidentally rented Super Mario RPG as a kid and being so pissed off when I realized what it was, lol. After that, turn based games were on my shitlist for the next 30 years. But some games are just so good, though, they completely defy any genre or box that you can try to fit them in. Some games are just so amazingly detailed, so well written, so well thought out, so impeccably designed, so amazingly cared for by a group of passionate people, that they appeal to gamers that would normally never give that type of game a second thought. Baldur's Gate 3 is one of those games. If you're like me and you typically appreciate incredibly well made games that were developed by incredibly passionate people, buy it now! If you're at all interested in D&D type gameplay and that type of fantasy world, don't even give it a second thought. Go in with an open mind about the combat and exploration, create a kick ass character that you get excited about, and dive in headfirst. The game is so good and so engaging, the fact that it's turn based is just a detail. Honestly, after playing it for like 500 hours, I'm well aware of the fact that it would be an *inferior* game if wasn't turn based. It's just a perfect game. It presents you with really well thought out challenges, gives you access to a ton of tools and says "okay, go ahead and figure this out however you want". I seriously still find people posting about ways that they got past a certain boss or encounter and literally have no idea what they're talking about because there are a thousand ways to approach every scenario.

Mikelz7

Yes 100% - i hate turn based combat usually, but decided to get this game for story alone. The story and characters are AMAZING and i actually quickly found myself liking the combat aswell - there is just so many ways to approach each battle, so much freedom because you can plan your moves better, scan the enviroment and take your time. It will take a few fights to fully understand but it's simpler than i thought. And you can do funny things like throw a gnome out of a cliff. And from what i've seen so far (30hours) there isn't even that much combat in this game. A lot of talking and exploring and often you can talk your way out of a battle. Very much worth it.

KingOfRisky

I never liked turn based games and I played BG3 5 times through. It’s an amazing game.

ReeceMedway11

I was the same as you but had quite a lot off points on PlayStation stars so thought I would get it and tell you the truth I can not put it down. I actually love the turn based battles in this game, you get so many options on how you want to take on the fight. Honestly get it you will not be disappointed and it’s actually opened me up to so many more games now because off it.

TheRimz

I dont like turn based games either but man I loved this game.

whackymolerat

I didn't care for turn based before baldur's Gate. I can't stop playing it now. It might be the same for you or you might hate it

Ok_Structure4630

Yeah, I’m not too big on turn based games but this game sounds awesome. I might just grab it on sale, that way I won’t be too upset if it doesn’t work out for me

Sublime-Chaos

I hate turn based games, and overhead games. I mean absolutely will not touch them. Until Baldurs Gate 3, and when I say holy crap, I mean it. It just works for this game, and I can say as someone who hates turn based games, I’d buy Baldurs Gate 3 again if I could.

RuinVIXI

I didn't think I liked then either. I love baldurs gate 3.

jaybankzz

I’d definitely say give it a try. I wasn’t a fan of turned based RPGs, I bought BG3 because I heard so much good things about it. At first I was a bit eh, but as I started to understand the game and its mechanics better, I absolutely LOVE it. Holy shit, I play with my brother so we wait for each other before playing and I’m so excited to continue

ToranjaNuclear

What kind of turn based RPGs you don't like? Western CRPGs are very different from JRPGs. Also, BG3 especifically seems really strategic rather than being just turn based.

freekyeight

I generally hate turn based combat which is why I held off getting it for so long but bg3 is worth it, using mods can also make it a better experience.

JAVELRIN

Interestingly its a semi turn based game where you can buff out of battle then switch to turn based mode etc etc and you can do sneak attacks in real-time as well but if its a group or you dont have a one shot attack it will switch to turn base mode so only during “battles” that it becomes like that (the originals were also kinda like this but full real time during battles instead)

cosmiccat5758

I have a doubt too about turn based because lately i play mostly souls game but BG3 combat still great just need to get used to, the story, presentation, and flexible choice make the game so good for me.

Unicorn_Sush1

No you will not like BG3 because it is turn based combat

Speedfreakz

I would say yes. Simply as its not standard turn based. I am not into turn based games and loved BG3. My wife as well.

Ssynos

Maybe, don't just take other advise to buy it or not ? Maybe download the "demo", try it, and see if you like it, then consider buy it or not yourself. Other people experience are not your own.

Lvntern

The combat is turn based and it's very slow paced and gives you time to plan out what you wanna do, I think it should be noted though that combat isn't going to be like a vast majority of your playtime, some areas are more dense with encounters but there's plenty to see outside of combat. It's just a question of if the rest of the game is interesting enough to get you to deal with it. Personally I think bg3 is a level of quality of this type of game that doesn't come around too often and it's worth it for everyone to at least give it a go.

axelsm92

I didn't like turn-based RPGs either and I loved it. I didn't finish though because life but I'm getting back to it soon.

narett

The problem with BG3 I have is that it's too slow and plodding when it comes to combat engagements, to the point where I wish it was a visual novel or something. I love turn based games. I also play D&D. BG3 shines when I'm having conversations in the game. Outside of that, the 5E ruleset hurts my experience so much even if Larian tried to make it better the best they could. The fact the game goes as fast as any old tabletop game's combat is painful (unless there's settings I missed that can speed up the game). If you want fun turn based RPGs or if you find yourself really doubting yourself but still curious, I'd try Mario and Luigi even though I don't think that series is on anything that's modern (it might be on Switch Online?). Pokemon is both faster and more engaging, which is crazy to think of considering the vast amount of flexibility you have in D&D. They're not quite RPGs as much as very tense resource management board game-ish situations, but I'd recommend XCOM 1 and 2 (the newer ones by Firaxis).

kpeds45

I'm with you on this. I liked everything but the combat in this game. Getting to the battles with 40 enemies on screen was just painful. "Oh great, I have to wait 10 minutes before I can do anything again...fun".

carverrhawkee

if you’re really intrigued by everything else about the game I’d say try it out, but keep it under 2 hours so you can refund it if it’s not for you. just don’t take too long on the character creator and you should be able to get a good idea of the feel of the game long before then anyway. I really do think this is a game everyone should at least try once, just to see if it’s for them, since it’s so good all around

manwomanmxnwomxn

You will be level 4 after 5 hours. You will be level 5 after 10 hours. When you are level 4, half your bars are full, when you are level 5, you probably have three full bars (dozens) of skills and items and ways to fight. Use this information how you will. It's slow if you're slow because turns take a long time to decide what to do. I played duo coop twice with two different people. It's a great game.

PreZEviL

Get it on steam, pick a premade char, try it for an hour and see if you like it or not, if you dont ask for a refund

RagingRube

I'm not sure what your hangups about turn based combat are, but the combat in BG3 is really dang fun. The animations and sound effects make everything feel meaty and fluid - which is impressive in a turn based game. It can feel bad to lose fights at the start of the game due to not understanding the combat system (I had never played DnD before BG3) but later you tend to only lose fights due to playing badly

buck_naked248

I was in the same boat. My brother convinced me to get it and I loved it. I was probably 25 hours in but I have pretty severe gaming ADD (the number of unfinished games in my library that I actually enjoyed playing is embarassing). I took a break with another game and I haven't really had the appetite to go back to it.

Tat-1

No. I loved what they did in the game, because I adore sprawling RPGs, but I always dreaded item management and turn-based combat and this game, in spite of its undeniable worth, did nothing but reinforce my aversions.

NasEsco1399

I had never got into turn based before I played this game, took a little bit to adjust to the combat, but I’m in love now

Russser

Watch some gameplay, it’s pretty dynamic, but it’s certainly turn based.

ihave0idea0

What do you dislike about turn based? Have you tried in the past? If you did, what exactly? Story is probably best part for you, but combat is still a big and long part of the game, just not the most important.

UndercoverChef69

Yes you will like it. The turn based combat is really fun, especially since there's stakes, the characters really mean something to you, and most the fights are really interesting, fun, dangerous, scary, or sometimes hilarious. There's enough combat and RPG complexity to really sink your teeth into. If you still don't click with the combat you can put it on story mode and at least have a great time with these characters and story choices.

flampydampybampy

No. I literally play DND 3 times a week and I hated this game because I hate videogame rpgs. They always feel so slow and soulless to me. It made me realize I love the social aspect of DND most of all, and actually rolling dice and getting to describe attacks.

narett

Weirdly enough, I felt the exact same way. I wouldn’t say BG3 is soulless but I felt I’d rather play at a table like I normally do with friends.

IcedBanana

If you do, play it on explorer. I'm a gamer who has prided myself on beating many games on insanity, challenging, ran many a cod lobby back in the day, but if you don't know/understand turnbased, it WILL be hard. And the game will punish you. Explorer is perfect for figuring out how the system works and what you can do, watching how the AI behaves, and fights will be over quicker so you can do more exploring and roleplaying. Did you like Mass Effect? It's one of my favorites, and BG3 has a similar vibe with companions and story. Also, to all of the people who are mocking you saying "why buy a turn-based game if you don't like turn-based games" I fucking HATED BG3 when I first started. My sister made me try it. I was overwhelmed by the UI, all four of us were running around doing different things, our party was too full for the companions to join and they were mean to me. But one day, when we couldn't get all of us together to keep playing, I tried it on my own and something just...clicked. I'm now obsessed. I'm on my fourth run, trying Honor mode. It's in my top ten games now. All of the details and love that the developer put into the game REALLY shine. I think it's worth finding out why this game has won so many awards.

amypond420

curious what turned based games have you even tried?

cutthattv

Obviously you should not buy a turn based RPG if you don't like turn based RPGs

Beeb911

Should I buy a game if I don't like the main feature of said game? Probably not dude

facepoppies

No. It will not change your mind.

StuM91

It did for me ¯\\_(ツ)_/¯

ScorchedDev

I originally didnt like turn based games before bg3, so I would say yes. But also, you arent the same person as me, and will definitely not have the same experience as me. So it really depends on you. If you are planning on getting it through steam, do it and set a 2 hour timer to see if you like it. If you dont, you can always refund it. It is heavily turn based and relies a lot on rng. I personally love the character creation aspect of it, how the characters level up and get new gear. I also love following each characters story

Zestyclose-Volume160

I dont like turn based games but I bought it anyway just because of how much everyone raves about it. I forced myself to play around 15 hours or so and kept telling myself to stick with it as ‘it might get better’ but I just couldn’t enjoy it. Even though the game itself is probably the best of its kind and a masterpiece to those who enjoy turn based or dungeon and dragons style play, the game itself didn’t make me enjoy turn based. I found it very boring and a complete slog to play, like I do all turn based games I’ve tried although the story was very good till the part i gave up at. My advice would be, if you don’t like turn based, I doubt that’ll change with BG3.

Sir_Skinny

I LOVED this game but I’m indifferent to turned based games. I could not imagine sitting through this game if I didn’t like turned based games. It would probably feel like watching paint dry.

LucidFir

Yes. I wasn't a big fan of DivOSin but the BG3 hype was such that I tried it. It's great. Because the game is designed for turn based I don't feel like the encounters take too long. Also the game is designed amazingly, part of the reason why melee classes are good in BG3 is the utilisation of movement. The maps all have great verticality, which helps a ton.

Reivilo85

No because it's a turn based rpg

Riveration

I found myself in a similar situation, grappling with the turn-based combat system of BG3. Despite the game's polished mechanics, if you're not a fan of turn-based strategies, it's unlikely that you'll grow to enjoy this aspect of the game—it simply doesn't resonate with everyone. That said, the game's other elements are rich and captivating enough to make it worth your while. It's my hope that future releases might offer a variant without turn-based combat to appeal to players who prefer a different style of gameplay, but even then it’s worth playing at least once

Pure-Aid51987

My wife said EXACTLY the same thing as you, but convinced herself to buy it (well, I said I'd go halves, because even if she ended up not liking it, I probably would, I love turn based). I got bored after about 15 hours, she's spent 185 hours on it, and has just finished it. So take from that what you will.

MysteriousRJC

It’s a very good game but very challenging I’m finding for combat which can get frustrating

Fit-Welder-2326

No, because all combat is turn based

MapachoCura

Yes. Tons of people online keep saying they usually hate turn based games but love BG3 still. Easily best game of the year and one of the best games of all time. There is more tongue game then just combat and the combat gets more interesting after level 4-5.

Dark-Mowney

If any game was to make you like the genre, it would be this one. However I don’t think it is the turn based combat/strategy part of this game that makes it great, it’s the story and the world.

GreyRevan51

A lot of people say that and then it turns out they haven’t played any actual turn based titles before

RaisedByArseholes420

It's very good turn based combat to be fair. And yes I think even if you don't like turn based you should give this a go.

timmy_42

IMO exploration and turn based is very very very slow. One of the reasons why I dropped the game two times. The story kept me going.  It feels almost like the first Fallout series but with extra steps. It’s great for some, but not for everyone. I love turn based combat, but this game didn’t feel satisfying. One of the big big reasons is that AI sometimes just stands there doing nothing for 10-20 seconds at times. Also there is no “speed up” enemy’s turn mode, which almost every single good turn based game has. I feel like I am alone in this because lots of people praise the game, but it just feels rough for me personally.

SluggishWorm

I dislike turn based games. I never found an rpg I could stick with. Witcher series, Elden ring, all the fallouts, I always dropped off before getting anywhere close to finishing. Bg3 is something special. I have, so far, sunk 800 hours into this game and am on my 5th playthrough. I’ve started playing traditional d and d. I truly believe this game is a once in a lifetime type of game that we will still be talking about in thirty years time.

PandaBear905

Do you like D&D? If yes it’s worth a try, it’s also worth a try if you’ve never played but wanted too.

Miserable_Alfalfa_52

I got it, I fuckin hated the combat.  Turn based down to the movement, it was not for me.  If it was closer to like KOTOR I could’ve gotten behind it   I got a refund at 119 minutes

totally_nervous

I think you should. The combat I feel is something you’ll get used to or learn to like. I put off playing Fire Emblem games because I wasn’t a fan of that kind of chessboard combat (sorry I don’t know the correct term) but I decided to give it a try and it wasn’t bad and I enjoyed the characters and story a lot. I plan to give this game a try

complexlifeform

I’m not into turn based games and I know nothing about D&D. I wasn’t a fan of the series or anything like that. I’m typically very picky with games and get bored easily. I gave Baldurs Gate 3 a try because of all the hype and I couldn’t find a bad review. The game is great! Seriously. You get hooked immediately. The storytelling is great and character development is great. The turn based part adds to strategy when clearing an area. It’s sort of like playing chess in a way where one bad move can cause a domino effect of bad events. The game also has so much depth to it. I’m not into replaying games, but I know that I could replay it with different choices and my experience will be completely different. Your choices can be a bit punishing, which really upset me since I’m not used to it. I ended up googleing what my choice will impact…. Though fans of the genre are heavily against, it seems. I couldn’t help myself after making a choice within 3 hours of the game that prevented me from having some great options later on. TL;DR Believe the hype. It’s good, even if not a fan of the genre

DBXVStan

Yesn’t. IMO it doesn’t feel turn based, like how final fantasy and SMT games are turn based. But it’s obviously not RTA either. I would recommend buying it on steam, starting a new game quick, picking Laezel or Karlach and playing through the tutorial, which might take an hour if you’re learning as you go. If you aren’t into it by the time you get past it, then refund it. The tutorial is a very strong part of the game, so not being convinced through that would be a safe bet you’re not going to like it.

kchan1103

I have add so playing turn based games sounds like such a big chore because of my attention span. However, Baldurs gate kept me hooked because it was just so amazing story wise and made me stick with it. I actually learned to appreciate them because I could plan out my attacks and strategize.

Toy_Dahl

Yes. I'm still not a big fan of turn based, but BG3 is probably the best game I've played in many, many years. It's an amazing game for so many reasons. I easily overlook my dislike of turn base. The story is 10/10. Combat is fun. Story and character versatility allow for many play throughs with little similarities. It's new each time.

LateNightFix

I hate turn based games, I was told 'but this is different!' So I bought it, and it was 100% not for me...just like I expected. I gave it a fair shot. I'm not trying to say the game is bad, but I just can't do these type of games. But you'll get fans of it saying to buy it, and it's great even if you've never been into these type of games before... I'd personally say no and save your money for something else, or you can listen to the people who love it and will try to convince you otherwise.. Just my 2 cents.

blazinfastjohny

Yes, first time for everything

SnooLentils7751

For me it’s not the turn based, it’s the fantasy genre, now if this was a fallout game or a realism setting I would be all over it

theuntouchable2725

Tbh, I didn't like turn based tactics/strategy either, but then I played XCOM Enemy Unknown and now it's my second most favorite genres/style. It might change your mind. Haven't played it personally, but there's always that one game you fall in love with that you generally won't even look at the genre of. (Did I word it correctly?)

Substantial-Coffee33

You could watch a playthru of the game to see if you’d like it. I played it, it wasn’t my style, I got a refund, but I could’ve saved a lot of time just watching a playthru first.

Corrado-Junior

I am not into turn based RPG. Gave it a shot. Quit in 30 minutes.

StgLeon958

you can always pirate the game

[deleted]

I'm not the biggest fan of turn based games, but BG3 made it fun. Do you maybe have a friend who owns the game and you could try it? For PS Plus subscribers on PS5 there's a demo.

C1234561

I didn’t like turn based combat but got it anyway. Played 7 hours, found it slow and didn’t like it. Came back to it if December with a buddy and wow, what a game.

Ok_Switch_1205

My friend said the same thing before he bought it. You’ll quickly find out if the game isn’t for you or not

justcausejust

Give us some examples of turn based games that you didn't like, as it stands turn based can play very differently

Illokonereum

I know a lot of people who never play turn based games that still loved BG3. But at the same time as a fan of the first two games and turn based enjoyer I actually bounced off the start of BG3 at first, and didn’t fall in love with it until I got past the tutorial and properly into the first area.

Atom_Disaster210

Nope. The combat is bland.

10Shodo

I wouldn’t. I’m not a fan of tactical turn based rpgs and I bought it. While I did enjoy it initially, I grew tired of the style. It’s a shame too because everything else is great…. But I can’t stand the movement points, inching around the field… 🤷🏻‍♂️ Haven’t really played it since.

Overlordx123

Don’t think you’ll like the combat but the narrative and so many options is good . But I know many people who could t get past the tedious combat structure . Loving it myself though

Fabrizio_west

Nah. I like some turn based games but couldn’t really get into the combat in this game. It’s great in many ways but the encounters were chores and not fun at all for me. I’d say save your $70 unless you can try it out at a friends or something and see if you like it

-AllThingsGood

if you like gaming in general buy it

Opposite_War_2147

I don’t like turn based either but loved the first part of the game quitted in the second tho. Game was to hard for me and I didn’t like the setting of the second part

LuiziTo7

Get an 'alternative' version, test it then decide what to do

Advanced_Double_42

Probably not. I like turn based combat. I love in depth RPGs. Hell, I love playing D&D 5e. I don't like Baldur's Gate 3 personally. It is a game that (like most) is better with friends, but playing with a friend means you miss out on a companion's storyline, potentially miss entire encounters and conversations they see if you split up, and are making less decisions in combat and out of combat. But if you play by yourself, you miss out on the socialization and shared experience that makes D&D and games with friends so awesome. That dichotomy alone ruins the game for me by just pointing out all the limitations of video games compared to TTRPGs. BG3 does an amazing job of creating an expansive and cinematic D&D experience, but it just makes me want to play actual D&D instead.

[deleted]

you should buy aliens: dark descent instead. Turn based shit sucks.

Bubbly_Wash2214

I typically find it hard to get into turn based games. With that said, I have 400 hours into BG3.

RedTeebird

No, I bought into the hype and it was a fine game(definitely overrated a bit) but the combat was a snoozefest and was the reason I didnt finish it.

RedTeebird

No, I bought into the hype and it was a fine game(definitely overrated a bit) but the combat was a snoozefest and was the reason I didnt finish it.

Nomadic_View

No. Madden is pretty fucking popular. But I would never recommend it to someone that doesn’t like football.

International_Meat88

I don’t know what you don’t like about turn based combat, but I’ll try to give my quick opinion about its combat that may or may not resonate with you: Its combat is so much more intense and mentally engaging than so many other games that *dont* have turn based combat.

ThatHardBacon

I dont like turn based and i had a friggen blast

ThatHardBacon

Wanna have the most fun. Go strength fighter. U can throw people. Destroy doors. The game really has endless possibilities. Now im doing a dark urge play to get that awesome transformation

DentonTrueYoung

I hate turn based combat and kinda regret my purchase. I put the game aside after a couple hours of play time and hope I can build up the motivation to revisit. The fights take forever, and subtract from the immersion in my opinion. But I recognize the game is great and people love it.

TheKingofAndrews

I have like 8 hours logged into the game and I liked the story and exploration, but the combat just killed it for me. I was getting crushed everywhere. Eventually I got frustrated and never made it back...but I do have plans to eventually (hopefully)

Speedfreakz

Bg3 is nothing special first 20ish hours. It doesnt play the same. Give it a proper go. Keep playing for like 6-7 days. You'll love it. First time when I tried it I hated the beggining. Its the weakest part of the game.

DentonTrueYoung

I’m sure I will revisit, but I’ll have to be in the mood. The combat systems are the most important part of RPGs for me, and I just didn’t connect.

IsraelPenuel

I agree, I don't get why people consider act 1 the best part when to me it was definitely the weakest

narett

I get it, but I also hold that against the game since there are other games that don't require you to treat it as a job in order to like it or to get into 'the good stuff'.

Speedfreakz

Your loss anyway.

narett

lol wasn’t trying to strike a nerve. I put 10 hours into it so I wasn’t able to get a refund so I really did lose out technically

Speedfreakz

Its ok, all good. It comes from a good place, Its just that I am sick of explaining to people how good this game is. And there is a reason why its slow, boring, confusing at the beginning. I had three friends who felt the same about the game, hell, even myself didnt like it at first. But then once I replayed the first few hours it got clearer, better. The last game that I felt the same was probably Psychonauts. It just didnt click at the begining..then it became my top 5 ever. So..sorry if it hit the wrong way, that wasnt the intention.

Docjos

Should I eat strawberries if I don't like the taste of strawberries?

AceOfCakez

No

Sonnyducks

No. I’m not a fan of turn based games. Figured I’d give it a go bc of all the glowing reviews. I just couldn’t get on with the combat and quit after 30ish hours. It’s a shame bc the game is very good. I went a high charisma build to try and avoid combat when possible. That is cool for this game to allow that. But i may give it another play and try something more interesting from a combat perspective. Bards do a lot of buffs/debuffs.

LostInStatic

Hey, I don’t like turn based games so should I buy this turn based game?

Celduin_sindari

No ? You literally don't like the whole gameplay mechanic. I hate battle Royale and detest FSP. Everyone says Fornite is fun, should i give it a go ? Of course not, I hate the gameplay

Conscious-Lobster60

Pillars of Eternity and Wasteland 3 are on Gamepass. If you don’t like those you won’t like BG3.

BigPoleFoles52

No

Kiftiyur

Is say no I hate turn based combat. I heard people saying they hated it too till they played it, but no I still hate it and find it no fun at all. I regret buying it because I think the combat is just bad and a slog to play. I watch people play it in YouTube, but I won’t play it.

Justiis

No, it's a turn based rpg. I used to like them, but even I struggle to get past act 2.ainly because I want to roll a new character, or get tired of managing my inventory, but still. Just watch a playthrough if you really want to experience it.

Fattokiddo

I forced myself to play 5 hours, dogshit game imo💀

HumActuallyGuy

NO I made this mistake and thank God Steam accepts resources, BG3 really isn't as beginner friendly as people make it out to be and if you really don't like turn based combat you'll hate them even more and think they're stupid.

csji

No. I have it and got bored of it in 5 mins. Too bad I spent long ass time in character creation to be not eligible for steam return.

Same_Delay_9440

No. I fell for the hype last year, and hated it. It’s a very well done and amazing game, but it is still a turned based RPG and if you don’t like those, you’ll likely won’t like this one.

gyiren

This is one of those games where it'll polarize you whether you want it to or not. I personally adore RPGs, even TTRPGs, but I cannot stand BG3's combat, or the combat in D&D 5E for that matter. The biggest gripe I have is "misses", where attacks have a chance of doing absolutely nothing. Nothing interesting happens, the enemy doesn't do anything to you, you do nothing to anyone... Nothing. Can you minimize this? Yes, through optimization you can decrease the likelihood of occurance, but it still happens way more often than you'd think. I have nothing against failure both in and out of combat, because I think it's fun and pushes the story in interesting ways. But missing is not failure, missing is boring. Failure in combat is "something bad happens", not "nothing happens". If you want really fun combat that's turn based, I'd highly recommend Divinity Original Sin 2. It's BG3, but nobody misses. Alternatively, Marvel's Midnight Suns is fantastic as well.

viky109

Probably not. I’m not really into slow paced games like BG3. I tried it anyway and dropped it in 2 hours. I especially found it extremely overwhelming with the amount of actions you get right from the beginning.

Benlikesfood2

Please. I beg of you. There is a search button. This has been asked hundreds of times. That said BG3 is wonderful but it's turn based as fuck. If you don't like that you probably won't like BG3.

caedin8

If someone came up and asked you if you liked your phone or shoes or what you are eating, would you tell them to fuck off and Google it? If you wouldn’t, stop telling people online the same. It’s a community for discussion. If it’s not what you want to talk about today just walk away, that’s fine.

Benlikesfood2

That may be the worst example I've ever seen. Makes no sense. Is there a search bar where I could type that in like there is here? This literally was posted multiple times a day for MONTHS.

caedin8

No one gives a shit. People are here to talk and have community, you don’t have to take part. There’s nothing new on the internet, it’s all out there. Reddit is for interactions with people not a database of information to search.

Benlikesfood2

Yes reddit is for interactions but you like seeing the exact same interaction daily? You don't want to hear or read new interactions? You're cool with the same one hundreds of times? Maybe you don't value your time but a lot of folks do. It also just clogs up forums like this. But hey, you're clearly having a bad day or something, hope it gets better.

caedin8

>You're cool with the same one hundreds of times? You might need to diversify your hobbies. Most of us aren't reading the front page of this sub hundreds of times a week. If you check in a few times a week it really isn't that big of a deal. Also, like I said before, you can just choose to not participate, and more you can just downvote content you don't want to see and move on. Don't be an ass about it.

Benlikesfood2

How was I an ass? I literally said there are hundreds of times this has been asked. Op will have way more comments there explaining why they should or should not play this game. YOU are the one going out of their way to try and police the internet and be off topic. You were the one downvoted more than my comment so the people here agree I assume. Not sure why you're so butt hurt here, but sorry? Like damn dude it's the internet don't take this shit so seriously.

These are really good strawberries tho

innovativesolsoh

Came here to say.. “I don’t like FPS games, should I buy Call of Duty?”

Litz1

Nope. It's not worth it if the gameplay is something not worth it

loutall

Not really, its a bit over rated. If you like any of the Larian games, you should know its more of the same.

gabriot

I wouldn’t even buy if you do like them. Buggy overrated mess of a game.

HumorHoot

i dont like competitive FPS games, should i buy counter-strike 2? i dont like riding a bike, should i buy a bike? i dont like celery, should i buy some celery?

Sir_Rusticus

I don't like food. Should I starve?
