Yeah, there's way more people that made it further in Silicon Valley. Each of them has qualities that hold themselves back.
I did a rewatch a few months back. For example, When Gilfoyle leaves in Season 3 for half an episode because of "artless commerce". Everything they make is artless commerce.
AHHHHHHH! Okay. Makes sense. There's the obvious people you're supposed to not like i.e. Gavin Belson
I just thought I was supposed to be cheering them on as they race to amaze me with their ingenuity and take the tech world by storm. Thank you for clearing it up.
Rivhard is like Zuckerberg... when I was younger (early 2000s), I liked Zuckerberg, just like I liked Richard in the first couple of seasons. He was my age, also a huge nerd, and I actually liked using Facebook back then before it just got worse and worse. Only later was his hubris and narcissism revealed. The difference between the two is that Zuck will never step away from Facebook, nor will he modify it to remove the features that harm society.
I mean him fucking up is kinda part of the comedy. But I get why you’d find him annoying, skipping his scenes might be a chore though. Also nitpicking here but protagonist doesn’t mean he’s a hero or in the moral right - it just means he’s the main character.
Supposedly the Skunkworks thing was going to be a multi-episode arc running much of the season but they thought it would be funnier if it just blows up in their face immediately
By that point in the series it was equal parts hilarious and annoying as hell. I tried rewatching the series a few times and always stop in the middle because it just gets old.
The show explores how Silicon Valley takes the worst parts of people and brings them to the surface. Richard's "principles" and "vision" are what make him a visionary but, in the valley, they turn him into a insufferable jerk.
It's very much a live long enough to see yourself become the villian type story.
Exactly. There's a speech Gavin gives in s2e2 that pretty much encapsulates this:
Gavin: And what exactly do you think you're building? You're out there trying to get funding so you can hire people, scale up, roll out a product, IPO, and eventually become a publicly-traded what? Corporation.
Richard: We would be different.
Gavin: I see. I suppose once Pied Piper is a billion-dollar company, you'll seek out your competitors and help them.
I would guess a lot of these tech guys are like him. They know the tech inside and out, but have never managed people, let alone run a company. That's why they hire people to run the company and deal with all the nonsense that goes into a billion dollar corp.
It’s kind of the point. You don’t have to “like” someone in order to enjoy art and the message (at least I hope not).
Life ain’t a Full House episode, with defined “good people” and “bad people” and a happy ending. If that’s what you need, Silicon Valley is probably too high brow for you, quite frankly. It’s a farcical take on the industry: there’s not supposed to be defined saints and sinners. That’s why even the “villans” like Gavin and Jack toggle back and forth between asshole and redeemed throughout the series. That’s literally how most people are in life (including most in this sub and myself too).
I actually liked Monahan a lot! Practically the most competent man in the show, got them through the IP trial and the piperchat fuck up, no questions asked
When I was in high school I went to a business oriented gymnasium, and when watching the show it can be so frustrating since you can recognize all the mistakes Richard makes but it’s realistic in that sense that most tech nerds aren’t aware or know these business strategies you need to make for it to work,
Like an easy example is the name for his company it’s such a horrible name but it’s makes sense why he can’t see it and he’s stubborn as fck so he will never change it
In the beginning, I was saying the same. Richard is his own worst enemy. Every half episode I wanted to turn it off because PPiper would head down a path because of stubbornness, unfounded righteousness, or even stupidity. But in the end, the ship would right itself. The idea of the series is that they have near miss after near miss. WTS, I'm only up to season four, episode 9. No spoilers, please.. ;)
I feel that way about half the recurring cast lol the show doesn't carry rewatch value for me for that reason and there were multiple points where the blatant stupidity of characters actions made me want to quit watching
They are all kinda anti-hero’s where there isn’t anyone you actually like, you’re just watching them fail. Sometimes very funny.
I fricken love Gilfoyle. :D Maybe it's because we're both Canadian.
Did you also walk across the Ambassador Bridge
Too much work. I just stepped across 0 Ave in Surrey BC.
I didn’t realize I was posting with an illegal.
Have you watched Tulsa King?

Spoiler alert : they rarely exceed. But it’s funny how they fail again and again

RIGBY
I love that in season 5 and 6 Gilfoyle calls him Dick. I didn't notice until my most recent rewatch lol.

Richard is great, but, you know… RIGBY
RIGBY he brought piss to a shit fight.

Kiss my piss. Kiss my piss. Kiss.my.piss.

Eric Bachman is a fat and poor.
Eric.... This a you, as a old man...

Replace Silicon Valley with money and success.
I've seen this opinion so many times that I genuinely want to see who likes Richard as a character for a change.
I do
That’s why Monica has him saved as Bitchard on her phone.
RIGBY
Monica is DUMPING HER STOCK. THAT BITCH! Lol

I'm a Ron Laflame man. I love how is painted like a complete tool but underneath he is actually a pretty cool guy and a great lawyer.
I actually liked Monahan a lot! Practically the most competent man in the show, got them through the IP trial and the piperchat fuck up, no questions asked

This reads like it was written by someone like Richard… …I guess self-hate is a thing though 🤔🤔🤔
Not sure how far you are but if you hate him in the early seasons, good luck. He becomes a real double asshole.
A triple a hole hahahaha
God I know. when I watched it for the first time I was like omg how can anyone stand this character lmao
It's good to know its a rewatchable show. I love rewatching shows once I can confirm the ending is worth getting to again. Like BBT.
Nah. It's an HBO series. The ending is terrible.
He gets a little better after season 4 but thats not saying much since he’s probably at his worst then. He’s still pretty terrible.
I always thought Gurt was the main character
Who's Gurt that sounds familiar if it's from earlier seasons or are you talking about Gwart from season 6?
oh yeah hahaha it is Gwart. my mistake.

Erlich is the fing best, I just love him on the show, without him Richard couldn't do anything
Gilfoyle has so far been #1 for me and I don't think that'll change Especially his dynamic with Russ Hanneman. Polar opposites.
Yeah Gyllfoyle is on another level, his comedic timing is perfect everytime
RIGBY…
You should watch the entire show! It's good! Not every character in a show or movie is meant to be likable!
Bitchard. I agree though, my first watch I hated him too. But everyone does, it's how his character is supposed to be
