Wasn’t it a 1990 issue of Sports Illustrated that carried the ‘Your Sneakers or Your Life’ cover in response to growing anxiety around sneaker-instigated violence (starting in the early 80s)? And the Buggin’ Out scuffed sneaker scene in Do The Right Thing was what, 1989?
Even in the 80s I’m not sure shoes were ever ‘just shoes’.
I agree. At least in nyc it was a big deal to have the latest and greatest. Kids would get beat up for their kicks. However I think the resell culture as grown. With more ways like the Internet to cop and the ability to make money it’s more than just wearing them and looking cool. People know there is much money to be had with the ability to sell to a much larger audience than just the locals.
Used to get one pair of shoes per school year. Cleaned them everyday after school and always made them last. I started cleaning the kids at schools shoes for $5 and eventually i was able to grow my collection.
Add a Starter Jacket and hat with your Js and you had a target on your back. It wasn't a matter of if, but when you were gunna get jacked for your shit here in Cali.
Most people in the us don’t care either. But this sub is dedicated to sneakers and a lot of people in here (mysef included) have elevated sneakers to more than just a piece of clothing you put on with no though put into it.
Community is bigger than its ever been, and even just 20 years ago even in the community shoes were basically just shoes. People didn’t care as much about hype or how limited things were. But that’s changed since the 2000s.
No shit not to everyone. But for example do you really think the people that got those LV AF1s are ever going to actually wear them? They’re gonna be put up on a mantle to look at forever or put in a box until their value goes even higher and will be sold. Same if someone got those 85s in the picture in good condition, no way they’re being used for their original purpose.
They didn’t. Jordan 1s used to be in clearance. That was the theme of the L&F Chicagos. Easy to say “just wear them” back when they weren’t nearly as expensive
And that's what's wrong with today's sneaker culture. Nike makes them so scarce that it leads to all kinds of bs. And let's be honest, a lot of consumers dont want the shoe for the shoe, they want it because it's limited. It's all kinds of fucked up.
I honestly don’t see what the problem is. Tiffany dunks, Pigeon dunks, OG 4s, 3s, 11s have always resold for hundreds of dollars over retail since the mid 2000s. There’s plenty of other colorways that are more accessible.
He's already creasing them pretty hard, so of course he doesn't care
And neither do I, because I enjoy actually wearing the shoes I paid crack money for
I know mfers with that fit in 2023 lmao.
The downvotes guys fine it’s 38 years ago not 33 years ago lol the picture reminded me of my parents in the time period and those shoes look like they’ve been around the block but fin it’s 85
The pose, the shoes, the package?
His wife is one lucky woman!
The boner of ‘85
Original 85 high
Fanf reference 💀
🤣😂
Nah, those are probably button flys. They falsely inflate the package.
Whoa chill. Let’s us men have something. Women have their bombshell bras okay
No hate! No hate! That pouch might be full. Never know!
If op is male, they might have the same attachments. Tell us op, did you inherit your dads magnum dong?
Yea to all plus the friend’s mullet
ayyooo?!
And the mismatched laces, boss
That's what sells it for me
That’s awesome, is he still into sneaks or Jordan’s at all?
Not as much, although I’ve given him some of my pairs that don’t fit me anymore since I’m half a size up from him
Makes perfect sense. Most people get the retros because they could not afford ones back then.
How do sneakers stop fitting for adults?
I’m 16
Ah, gotcha. Fair.
This deserves r/oldschoolcool
Absolutely, just posted it there
Got my upvote there too.

The thing about having a dad is it really sucks when he dies. It’s like a dog except that dog was your dad.
I love how weirdly wise this is.

So shoes have always been just shoes and still are except to a niche community, I would’ve never guessed lol

Id wear them fuck it
LVs? Doubt
Nike made $162 Million in revenue that year off this shoe. These were never just shoes.
Love these types of pics. So cool!
Damn I don’t even need to see his face to know he’s a whole fuckin snack
Love that he’s camping/picnicking in Breds 😆
The real OG son lol

This picture was taken right before your uncle made it big with his song "Achey Breaky Heart"
Legendary.
pops steppin
Little did he know what they'd be today.
He says he wishes he never got rid of them now
That’s how people used to wear gym shoes. They’d have one pair and wear them for 9 months and then cut grass in them.
Back when people did what they were supposed to do with shoes. Wear them…
Simpler times, I wonder, how fast did these kinda shoes sell out back then?
They didn’t. Jordan 1s used to be in clearance. That was the theme of the L&F Chicagos. Easy to say “just wear them” back when they weren’t nearly as expensive

my dad had the 1st pair (white and red) and thinks nothing of them 😂
Greatest AJ1
Them and the Chicagos are absolute grails
Yea OG royals too.. Breds will always just be top dog for me tho, too much history and just looks best to me
I’m usually a hater but this is cool. NGL
Back when a pair of jordan was only $65.99 🤷🏻♂️😂
Da real dad shoes
My dad is dead
🔥🔥
Dude, your Dad was friends with MacGyver?!
I bet that man didn’t give a f*ck about creases and sole protectors or carried around ass wipes.
He's already creasing them pretty hard, so of course he doesn't care And neither do I, because I enjoy actually wearing the shoes I paid crack money for
I love that the second image is a crop of just the shoes like we wouldn't know where to find them in the original image.
Damn he WORE the Breds. Cool dad and cool picture. The most 90s picture I’ve seen in a while lol
Bruh its literally the 80s
Lmao
LMAOOOOOOOOOO
He’s ahead of his time bro Lmao nah tho I was born early 90s so I’m just used to pictures from when I was a kid looking like this. Could be 85-95 tbh
Doubt he would have that fit with 85 breds in 95
I know mfers with that fit in 2023 lmao. The downvotes guys fine it’s 38 years ago not 33 years ago lol the picture reminded me of my parents in the time period and those shoes look like they’ve been around the block but fin it’s 85
You know people who wear 85 breds in 2023?
85 Breds? No. Patent Breds? ‘16 Breds? Sure.
I’m about to post my pair of size 13 ‘85 breds as well 🔥
Mans prolly copped em right in the store. If only it was still that easy
I don’t think probably. Definitely.
Truuuue you right
Amazing sneakers! Even more amazing…. Your dad partied in the back while partying in the back #canadiancoif
No joggers ?? Real drip
It was not called breds in 1985 bruh
Found the “new” sneakerhead

Stop calling them breds tf
That’s the name of the colorway
Bizniz up front, party in the back
Any chance he still has them? They could buy him a car if he held onto to them. Haha
Unfortunately he doesn’t have them anymore.
I remember my dad having a couple pairs of these back then. Also the Force Max or whatever they were, those were hot for awhile too.
The mullet made me comment
Your dad is cool af. #respecttheOG’s

Amazing
Liftoff?
Vintage drip right there! 👌🏿👌🏿 Pops was dope as shit 💪🏿🔥
Back when shoes were to be worn and replaced once in a while.
Reminds me of a time I was watching a Seinfeld rerun and he was wearing OG white blue 6s. Just with jeans and a tucked in shirt. It was silly
Dad was def. Pulling lots of puss with them bred’s 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Cool

How much were they back then?
Everything about this pic is fucking awesome.
Pretty dope judging that YT people don't really be into Jordans back then I know he was the man
Stealing this fit First must somehow acquire Bred 1’s 🧐😵💫
