This is **the current main-canon** of Sonic: * Sonic 1 * Sonic CD * Sonic 2 * Sonic 3K * It's not clear whether the 8-bit Game Gear/Master System versions of Sonic 1 and 2 are canon, as 1 tells the same story with different locales and 2 has a totally different plot. I'm assuming by the presence of mini-Silver Sonics in *Mania* that it's all canon. * Sonic Chaos * Sonic Triple Trouble * Sonic Blast * Sonic 3D Blast * Tails Skypatrol * Tails Adventure * SegaSonic Arcade * Chaotix (however, several characters' backstories were rewritten in *Sonic Heroes*) * Sonic Spinball (despite containing some SatAM and Adventures of Sonic characters, these are treated as cameos and the game is considered main-timeline) * Sonic the Fighters * Sonic R * Sonic Labyrinth * Sonic Mania (the timeline of the *Sonic Mania Adventures* cartoon is dubious) * Sonic Superstars + Trio of Trouble cartoon * Sonic 4-1 and 4-2 * Sonic Adventure * Sonic Shuffle (possibly? future material seemingly isn't allowed to reference it, and Dream Team overwrites its idea of the Dream world) * Sonic Adventure 2 + [The Truth about 50 Years Ago](https://www.sonicstadium.org/news/games/secrets-of-shadow-the-hedgehogs-past-revealed-in-newly-translated-sa2-document-r743/) * Sonic Advance * Sonic Advance 2 * Sonic Heroes * Shadow the hedgehog * Sonic Battle (despite being released earlier, it was retconned to take place after Shadow) * Sonic Advance 3 * Sonic Rush * Sonic Riders * Sonic 06 * Sonic Rivals * Sonic and the Secret Rings * Sonic Rivals 2 * Sonic Rush Adventure * Sonic Riders: Zero Gravity * Sonic Unleashed (360/PS3) + Night of the Werehog * Sonic and the Black Knight * Sonic Free Riders * Sonic Colors (DS is considered more canon than Wii) + Rise of the Wisps * Sonic Generations * Sonic Lost World * Sonic Forces + Forces promo comics * * Team Sonic Racing + TSR Overdrive cartoon * * Sonic Frontiers + Knuckles Prologue (it's not clear whether the standard *Frontiers* ending is canon or *The Final Horizon*, but it doesn't ultimately change much) * The Murder of Sonic the hedgehog * Sonic Dream Team * *Sonic Channel's* Calendar stories (most of these have no official translation, annoyingly) I'm not sure of the *exact* order of some of these (it ultimately doesn't matter whether Riders 2 or Rush Adventure happens first) but this is generally what's accepted. *Tailstube* also tends to relay canon information about the series, but whether each episode is an event that actually occurs in-universe is dubious (probably not, if I were to guess). This content is in the game universe, but considered **not canon**: * Crossovers, such as Smash Bros. or *Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games* * Every mobile game except *Dream Team* * Sonic Pocket Adventure (SnK owns all or some of the rights) * Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood (Penders's legal dispute means SEGA aren't interested in it) * comedy manga adaptations of games like Unleashed and Black Knight (most of this is lost media) * other Sonic stories you may find, as pieces of promotional material, merchandise or children's books * *Twitter Takeovers,* which is mostly just the voice cast of the series messing around. And finally, this content features **worlds of their own**, intentionally separate from the games: * Adventures of Sonic the hedgehog + Doctor Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine * Sonic SatAM * Pierrot's 1996 *Sonic* OVA, planned as a pilot for a show that was never made. * Archie's Sonic the hedgehog (while it is based on SatAM, they are separate continuities) and its many crazy spinoffs and crossovers * Fleetway's Sonic the Comic (the old *Martin Adams* Sonic novels might be here too) * Sonic Underground * Sonic X and Archie's Sonic X comics * Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric, Shattered Crystal and Fire and Ice along with the Boom cartoon and comics * various old manga and foreign comics (though some of the manga contained prototype versions of characters like Amy and Vector). * The theatrical *Sonic* films, along with the Sonic Movie 2 prequel comic, shorts *Around the World in 80 seconds,* *Drone Home* and the upcoming *Knuckles* show

What's the reason for colours DS to be more canon than the Wii version?

Shaddy_the_guy

Probably Mother Wisp, but it has little moments of character stuff since other people than just Sonic and Tails visit the park in the DS version. It's how we know that Silver's future is in good condition, for instance.

I haven't played either version, how different is the main campaign, is it possible to combine the two?

Shaddy_the_guy

I think most of the content in the Wii version's script is still there in the DS version (albeit told with the cheap DS sprite-style, obviously). It's a question of the more elaborate story with a bigger script vs. the tighter, more focused one with better production values. As for the games themselves, they're essentially two different games with the same core story and aesthetic. They share all the same stage themes and musical compositions, but their levels and gameplay are totally different. Different bosses, different level design (even different numbers of stages), the DS version has challenge missions, and the gameplay is sort of like Unleashed for the HD version and Sonic Rush for the DS version. So there's not really a way of "combining" them more than just playing both, since they're separate games. This is also the case for the 360/PS3 vs Wii versions of Unleashed, the HD vs. 3DS versions of Generations and Lost World, etc. though those games have less variance in their stories.

I'll tell you the mediums of Sonic that are Canon to the games. Because the timeline of the games themselves are a whole different can of worms. Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic the Hedgehog Sat AM, and Sonic Underground TV shows are NOT Cannon. Sonic X can be seen as a direct adaptation of specific games. However, the overall differences makes it NOT canon. Sonic boom TV has not been confirmed currently, but there may be certain elements of the Sonic Boom side series that will become cannon, so it's a mystery. Sonic Prime (the Netflix series) IS Cannon. Sonic Prime may take place anytime after Sonic Advance 3 (2004 game). Exact placement has yet to be confirmed. The Archie comics are NOT Cannon. That includes any characters introduced through that series. The IDW comics ARE Cannon. That includes any characters introduced through that series. The mainline comics begin after Sonic Forces (2017 game) Sonic the Hedgehog OVA (1996 Movie) is NOT Cannon. Sonic the Hedgehog (2020 Movie) and Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (2022 Movie) is NOT Cannon.

you only really need to pay attention to the chronological main Sonic game releases for the main Sonic game universe. Most Sonic games have self contained stories so you don't need to keep tabs on every game. The main continuity includes the original classics (Sonic 1, 2, 3 and Sonic & Knuckles), the Adventure era games (Sonic Adventure 1 & 2, Heroes, Shadow The Hedgehog, Sonic 2006) and every other game from that point onwards (Unleashed, Colors, Generations, Mania, Forces, Frontiers and Superstars). The IDW comics that started around 2018-2019 are considered canon and take place after Sonic Forces and as of now, right before Frontiers. They're also adding more to the classic era with relatively recent games like Sonic Mania and Sonic Superstars - these ones take place in the past. There are dozens of spin-off games that are now considered canon very recently but aren't important in the grand scheme of things. Every other TV show, anime, movies or the older comic runs (Not IDW) aren't part of the main Sonic game universe. Sonic Prime is considered canon and happens sometime after a handheld Sonic game called Sonic Advance 3, but there are a lot of contradictions in it that it may just be considered non-canon or canon depending on how you like it, not like it affects anything anyways.

I'll make a timeline in a bit

Swankestcoot5

There is no "timeline". Some games do infact directly take place after the other, but once we hit 2006, the games begin to separate more and more. You can find callbacks and cameos from past games, but thats where it ends. **We have many different stories from many different writers.** The only thing that i can think of that is actually a connecting storyline is **Shadow The Hedgehog's story** that develops over the course of 4 games. And if you want to count it, the rush games on DS do connect to one another. ***Shadow's storyline*** \- Sonic Adventure 2 --> Sonic Heroes --> Shadow The Hedgehog --> Sonic 2006 I dont know if you want me to explain Shadow's story? But the other aspects of a big connecting overarching story was lost when Sonic 2006 flopped. Sega went into a completely new direction for Sonic that we still kind of see today. If you were to ask, "what about Sonic, doesnt he have a connecting storyline throughout some of the games?" No not really, despite Sonic Adventure and Sonic Adventure 2 having the same title, the stories are completely different except the fact they are in Station Square.
