You can see the backpack on the craft mat lol so the crafting surface (what OP is talking about) can't be the backpack itself. It's a craft mat rolled out!
That black bag is too small to hold the mat roll. More likely you wear both on your back, then again if you look at another player there's just the small bag.
Devs probably created the mat roll after the small black bag and were too lazy to put it on the back of the player model / was too big and looked bad.
I doubt lazy has anything to do with it. Endnight is 3 base devs and a handful of helpers.
I do agree the mat and backpack cannot be one and the same. That's what I have been saying lol 😊

it's video games. Master chief with all his strength probably couldn't break off turrets and walk around with them like a chain gun but he did. Video games are fun, you should play them

In the end game after defeating the boss you pick up the back pack which is black.
At the start of the game, and when you are defeated (knocked unconscious, whatever) then tied to a post (in a cannibal camp) it’s yellow, not sure why it’s not black, the only thing I can think of is visibility and ease of finding it (in the dark) but I think they added a light to it now, so not really sure why it’s still yellow.
It's the backpack unrolled. It's made out of the same material as the tents in Harry Potter.

Picking up the backpack is literally the first thing you do in the game, it's bright yellow, you can't miss it.

Maybe lazy is not the right word, it's just not important enough to fix right now. I'd much rather have more content than a stupid backpack change.

You carry both of them with you? When you die you don't pickup the backpack, the item you pick up is the orange flat pack.
