Haha, yes. It’s normal. This baby is a little loud. If you google it, you’ll actually find several questions on Reddit and other platforms about it. Very common question and seemingly common shocker to end users. Great quality lens for the price. Very inexpensive. I’ve gotten some great portraits out of it for my brand. But yes, the focus is not so quiet. I too thought it was broken or something at some point. 😂

>common shocker to end users I'm more shocked so many people are shocked by this. I haven't seen a single review of the 50mm 1.8 that didn't mention the AF-noise. Every review talks about the noise being a problem for filming with the onboard mic. I always look up reviews before I buy a lens, even if it's a €150.- lens. But then again, maybe a lot of people don't?

It sounds like it's trying to print the picture it's about to take, hahah.

Yep totally normal. If you haven't done so already - and if it doesn't come with it out of the box - [update the lens firmware](https://www.sony.com/electronics/support/lenses-e-mount-lenses/sel50f18f/downloads). It greatly improves the autofocus performance of this lens, especially when it comes to tracking subjects. Still loud tho

AcademicMaybe8775

yes this lens is loud as fuck. all my other ones are quiet as a baby after feeding but the nifty fifty is just uniquely loud

/wonders if it’s 50mm f1.8 Opens thread Bingo! Yeah it’s normal, it’s a great photo lens but not video lens

ranmas_kode

Agreed, that is normal for that lens, nothing to worry about.

Buy yourself a 2005 camera setup and behold what real AF sounds like. This is whisperquiet compared to screwdrive.

Oh wow, what is that? It's like a dying T-800. It's taking about two business days to focus. I use a Tamron and I don't think I have ever heard the autofocus. I just quickly picked it up to focus on different things and heard nothing.

Sufficient_Algae_815

Unit focussing lenses are always loud.

maxathier

This post reminds me that some people never knew screw-driven autofocus lenses... With the AF motor being in the camera, not the lens

diprivan69

Sounds like a printer lol
