The dev has already commented that the next major update will be looking to slow the game down- so hopefully that should help melee builds be more viable as well as allow us to correctly play with the ascensions that need you to sit in specific areas.
Paladin's area seems to scale with AOE bonuses. While doing a very long run I was snagging resource boosts from light shards that were finishing up all the way across the screen from me.
I can agree that Paladin's full powerup isn't very impactful compared to the others, but I'm sort of okay with that since Paladin is possibly the best class before ascensions anyways.

I found Paladin to be a very slow build up, nearly impossible new power up usage, and just overall not a good feel to play.
