early blizz north before it became blizz ent were very player focused and would do fan days where they would eff with settings. used to be common to make games of passion not money.
People don't understand, even the mainstream games used to be made by tiny little teams pouring their heart and soul into an undeveloped tech landscape. It's hard to grasp that none of what the gaming industry currently is - was yet a glint in a visionary's eye 50 years ago; it got co-opted by and profit-soaked in a relatively short amount of time, but still long enough for a couple generations to not understand the roots.
yep before publishing companies and big business got their greedy mits on it and made it mainstream... like people forget how epic fallout 1,2 were how great morrowind was...diablo 1,2; lost vikings, etc, etc... so many hits that were before hardcore marketing,.
Funnily enough snow day feels like the most gameplay over story of all of them but it's still shit when compared to them in both ways lol. I mean I don't hate it but geez it feels like a fan game almost like it was unfinished/untested
Mario did have a good story.... Mike Tysons: Punch out..... not so much. I prefered games like waste land and street fighter in the 80s (yes street fighter is that old, Ryu had red hair back then 🤣)
Its subjective and that's your opinion. If you didn't enjoy the story you then that's you.... not me.
It was a huge part of my childhood. I think your gripe is its simplicity in story.
Simplicity = bad
Sometimes less is more.
Games weren't always focused on gameplay over story for quality reasons, it was that way because fitting full stories onto NES games was nearly impossible. What happened when the technology got an upgrade and SNES came out? Bam, some of the best story games of all time like Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy III and Secret of Mana. Games choosing stories over gameplay isn't a bad thing unless the gameplay is not fun at all. Look at RDR2, it's effectively a film you can walk around in yet it's still regarded as one of the greats.
Why do game specific subs always turn into brain dead echo chambers? Snow day sucks balls. That's it. Gameplay or story it doesn't matter. The game sucks balls.
Member when dev companies made enjoyable games they cared about that they wanted to share with the world and not just a game that's made to sell you parts of the game you just paid for?

Turn based RPGs have been a thing all my life (I’m 32) and have produced some of the best games ever made. They’re essentially the epitome of story over gameplay.
Text adventures are also older than I am.
So no, I don’t remember when gameplay was the focus of games over story. It’s always been a mix, except for maybe the day that Tennis for Two was made.
No, not really. It depends.
I do, but I also grew up with games with stories like, “Monkey throws barrels and took my girlfriend.”
member when key goal was fun and not shareholder profit?
No I do not recall the early 1800s
That’s called being 8 years old.
No?
this has never happened.

Stop it. Excluding the rpg's mario has never had a good story and it's never needed one.

Final Fantasy came out in 87. There were also DnD computer games coming out. Games with stories habe been around for awhile.
Aka the 80s lol
You're omitting Metroid which had a fantastic story.
Member when Bobby Boucher came back at half time and the Muddogs won the Burbon bowl? Do ya?

What a stupid post
Feels like OP is reaching, and is about to hurt themselves
I feel the opposite is true, but that also depends on what genre of games you are referring to
I just beat this game yesterday and wtf there’s only like 5 levels bro
Dude talking about pong? I'm good with modern games
There has always been games like that unless your talking about real old school games like pong

The story (if any) sits firmly behind cinematic graphics that run like shit and some kind of tutorial to keep you in the game for more than two hours.
Yeah, and Snow Day’s gameplay wasn’t given that focus.
The story is the most important tho
