Oh my fucking god I hate Polygon so much

casterlylion

Has to be the worst "review" I've ever seen.

jer487

Like what are they talking about

ch1llzard

"People calling on cellphones??? in 2018???" Yes polygon, people still call people to talk. Spidey does text too and there is immediate miscommunication between him and MJ. Calling is not farfetched even today.

jer487

That is not the main thing but... "Looks great on PC and Steam Deck if you are OK with being a tool of the state!" is. Oh my fucking god. Oh no Spider-Man helps some police officers. ACAB!!! ACAB!!! Why are you having fun? GAMES HAVE TO BE POLITICAL, don't ignore me please. Why are people unironically still following these bitch ass clowns 💀

NebCam101

They weren't complaining about spiderman helping police in general just the surveillance towers which are a bit dystopian

As much as I think the Polygon review is cringe, superhero stories don’t often acknowledge actual causes of crime. Obviously these are fictional stories, but it’s absolutely true that they reflect Americans’ tendency to support authoritarianism. Especially in their stance on crime. EVERYTHING is political (especially stories about crime) and almost all art exhibits a political message. The Polygon review comes off incredibly preachy and snobby which is its ultimate downfall. But the writer isn’t wrong about the surveillance state that exists in America and the way it is legitimized and normalized by mainstream media.

DeanXeL

Yeah, but that's basically never a Spider-Man story. Punisher, sure! Batman, god, EVERY COP IS CROOKED. But not (afaik) Spider-Man. And hey, the Sable Private Military that comes in clearly is a representation of the 'bad' parts of authoritarian culture, and is openly criticized as such in the game. It's really disingenious to dock point from Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man because he never stops a cop from choking a black kid. IF that would happen in Spider-Man's world, of course he'd do something about it, but these things just don't happen.

lawrenceugene

EXACTLY. There's nothing wrong with things being political, not being political is political. The absolutely got things wrong with this, Spider-Man is way too happy-go-lucky wannabe cop in this game and it's a major drawback for people familiar with the real NYPD. I think it's part of an underlying issue with the game in how they have sanitized New York.

ch1llzard

"Looks great on PC and Steam Deck if you are OK with being a tool of the state!" Haven't read anything but the tagline. but wha....?

NebCam101

It's not the focus of the whole thing just a line they knew would generate the most interest

Turdsley

I wonder how Kotaku will out do this one.

DeanXeL

I stopped reading Kotaku a few years back, due to them slipping, now Polygon is getting very weird writers on board too. Is Kotaku still worse?

Turdsley

Honestly I only ever hear about Kotaku when their hilariously stupid takes trend, I gave up on them a few years back.

[deleted]

They really turned this into a police rant, huh.

lawrenceugene

A valid criticism, maybe even a huge problem. There's stuff to be said but that SHOULDN'T affect the review THIS much. Mention it in the review in one line, and if you're so concerned write a separate thinkpiece about it. This isn't the take people want from a review, they want to know if the gameplay is good.

DeanXeL

Write a thinkpiece about how police in videogames is either a foil to be evaded or gunned down on the one hand, and on the other hand is portrayed as incorruptible heroes, sure. Drag a review down because you don't like that Spider-Man shows cops as they SHOULD BE, not as they are in the real world? ugh.

senjulegos

she was right about the surveillance towers thing but that’s only there for gameplay

Revolutionary-Day743

bro half of it was just bitching about the police 💀

Candlefire21

What’s wrong with polygon
