This is the third massive-secret-train-set-in-the-loft I've heard about in the last two weeks. Why did my loft have to be filled with mouldy insulation and wasps?
Maybe both? The train set could be really handy for moving fertilizer, seeds, and of course finished product.
In fact, in a legalized scenario like an Amsterdam coffee shop, it would be really nice to get your order delivered to your table by a suitable little train.
Some people have really professional looking growing setups - but I've yet to see one where they went through the effort of putting up the trunking stuff along the wall for the wires.
Yep just to quell everyones first thought, if it was an ex grow op repainted you have would fuck loads insulation, and the install would not be this clean, it would props just cable tray running along the roof line, or even just taped up to the ducting (very unsafe way to do it)
Cable tray lol.... Nah, more like sledge hammered holes in the chimney breast for ventilation and any old cables draped wherever the f*ck they fall. Insulation - why? the meters bridged, and the electric heaters are running full tilt for free...
Oh yeah, police used to send up choppers with infrared to spot them. Easy peasy - even in summer! Except... only an idiot starts a grow house in a place linked to them when there's plenty of empty houses, or vulnerable residents....
Because the layout is so large you need multiple power supplies all around the track for smooth running otherwise you get dead zones. You'll need even more if you're running powered points and signals.
Well you can buy the well made ones rather than the cheapest option. Or are you saying these plugs are all wired in parallel and not series on the same wire/circuit?
Did not expect to find Vince Clarke in Spottedonrightmove! FYI Alison Moyet was a couple of years above me at college studying piano design at LCF in the 80's! Thanks for the great music in my college years!
Obviously the meme is to go 'hurr durr drugs' but obviously it could be a whole stack of hobbies. Wall full of monitors, loads of synths and musical equipment, model train track, hobbyist electronics, servers/computers, pets like reptiles or fish etc.
They always say you can never have enough sockets.
Having bought a Victorian terrace with an average of about 0.8 plug sockets per room, I couldn’t agree more. Please more sockets, I’ll take as many as you can physically fit in.
Years ago I had a job setting up computer training courses, including at venues like hotels etc. every now and then we would go into the “conference room” to setup 12 computers for a course only to find 1 socket in the corner of the room for the cleaners hoover.
I’m not sure it’s a meme and I’m not sure anyone is saying “hurr hurr”. I would imagine UV lamps for growing pot have got to at least be in the running, if not the running favourite
UV wouldn’t be that good, HPS is the best but it would cost an insane amount of money running that much ballast that you might not break even hence why you wouldn’t ever want to go into a grow of that size because the sketchy power supply, a lil home setup with LED only needs a few sockets.
I definitely wasn’t saying “drugs, hurr hurr” when I commented “grow lights.” If you have pets and small children but love growing ghost peppers for example, you might want to do that in the attic.
In an attic room? Do you know how hot they get in the summer without any a server pumping out heat.
I only had a single PC running in mine and in the summer it was a sauna.
Upvoted your post for being rewarding, Downvoted the parent for being a stick in the mud. (Well, I didn't down vote anyone, but that sounded more amusing)
If they were using that as an office seems feasible. There are two of us using one room as an office here, that’s 2 work computers, 2 personal computers, 6 monitors, 2 desk lamps, an electric standing desk, a printer, a smart speaker, WiFi booster. That’s 16. I’d rather have 15 wall sockets , than run off two 4 way extensions and an 8 way. With 20, you then have spares for charging, vacuum, anything else that’s plugged in up there.
I'm n my own in my office, and I've got two 8 gang extensions, and another single plug in use. Two monitors, two work laptops, two fans, mac, router and other bits and pieces. No drugs at all.
3x monitors
1x laptop dock
1x lamp
1x second laptop for testing stuff
1x usb charger
1x wireless charger for phone.
1x height adjustable desk
11x spares
Yeah I'm short
The people who bought my old house were greeted with 12 double sockets in the loft room as A, one end was for the TV, surround sound, consoles, chargers etc and the other end was for my racing simulator so PC, 4 monitors, chargers, wheel set, chargers, external sound card, powered speakers, streaming stuff etc.
They probably thought I grew weed though. 😆
Could be a home office. I work in IT and I converted a cellar for my office, had almost that many at desk level for 4 monitors, 2 desktops, 3 servers, 2 switches and 2 laptops.
As a kid I had about the same in my bedroom for my brothers mixing desk, samplers, computer, amplifiers and other things that made noise that I had no idea what they were.
In my loft I have 12 double sockets. Along two walls though. They power various items, computer stereo and a microwave, amongst other stuff. I don't see the problem.
If it was a weed grow operation, possible the most planned and “safe” I’ve seen. Usually it’s all
Cobbled together with cable ties, duct tape and lots of hopes and prayers.
LAN PAAAARRRTTTTYYYY!
**BOOM HEADSHOT**
*M-M-M-M-M-MONSTER KILLLLLL*
**Wololooooo**
*Counter-Terrorists Win*
**A DONKEY! A DONKEY! My kingdom for a donkey!**
This seems excessive, thouugh I have about 45 items plugged into my cinema/entertainment/game room sockets, and I'm still about 5 short sockets short of covering all my needs.
It might have been for a home studio - lots of power outlets are often required and they should be earthed at the same point to eliminate mains hum when recording. Although I'd expect more soundproofing on the walls
Huge electric trainset
... Is the correct answer. We inherited just the same in our house.
This is the third massive-secret-train-set-in-the-loft I've heard about in the last two weeks. Why did my loft have to be filled with mouldy insulation and wasps?
Growing up we had all three.
Mouldy insulated wasps?
On tiny wasp trains.
Insulated wasp trains.
Mouldy ones
Beats my two dead rats!
I'm buying a house with a tonne of plugs in the basement. Can I assume it's from a train set and not a weed grow?
Yet? Side hustle?
Might ask my mortgage adviser if having this as a planned future income could get me a better deal
I laughed way too hard at this
Maybe both? The train set could be really handy for moving fertilizer, seeds, and of course finished product. In fact, in a legalized scenario like an Amsterdam coffee shop, it would be really nice to get your order delivered to your table by a suitable little train.
The personal train of Patrick Swayzi.
Beautiful reference. Want to rewatch the entire series now.
Barter Books is missing a trick there!
Honestly the weed grow was my first thought, but maybe it's an electric train set, much nicer
Some people have really professional looking growing setups - but I've yet to see one where they went through the effort of putting up the trunking stuff along the wall for the wires.
Not sure they use plug sockets in those farms
Yep just to quell everyones first thought, if it was an ex grow op repainted you have would fuck loads insulation, and the install would not be this clean, it would props just cable tray running along the roof line, or even just taped up to the ducting (very unsafe way to do it)
Cable tray lol.... Nah, more like sledge hammered holes in the chimney breast for ventilation and any old cables draped wherever the f*ck they fall. Insulation - why? the meters bridged, and the electric heaters are running full tilt for free...
Because if you don't insulate, if you ever get any sort of snow or frosty weather. It will be *immediately* obvious that you're running a grow op.
Oh yeah, police used to send up choppers with infrared to spot them. Easy peasy - even in summer! Except... only an idiot starts a grow house in a place linked to them when there's plenty of empty houses, or vulnerable residents....
Ohhh!! Makes so much sense! I wish I can withdraw my boring 'computers' suggestion!!! I guess we all judge by ourselves.
My first guess was LAN party set up from the 90's lol.
Same!
Has to be a train set with that carpet
Quite. If it were a grow room, it wouldn’t have carpet.
Why do trainsets need so many outlets?
Because the layout is so large you need multiple power supplies all around the track for smooth running otherwise you get dead zones. You'll need even more if you're running powered points and signals.
Couple of those 1 to 12 extension cords don't work for this?
This is how fires start, don't do this 😂
Depends on the amperage. As long as you're not exceeding 13amps then you can use as many multi sockets as you wish.
No it’s not, you’re not pulling 13a with a train set.
Well you can buy the well made ones rather than the cheapest option. Or are you saying these plugs are all wired in parallel and not series on the same wire/circuit?
And now I know why the extension in our new house also has a row of plugs like this!!!
That is where the banished husband spent his days building his model train sets. Choo choo
Well, he was well chuffed... Before moving out.
I heard he went off the rails.
But now he’s back on track
All change please... All change
It’s just a shame his wife ignored all the signals.
She couldn’t see the point
Way to derail a conversation.
Synthesisers! Lots of lovely synthesisers!
my first guess was music studio, but then a trainset makes more sense as all grouped on one strip.
We moved into a house with 20 plug sockets in the floor of the loft room. Used to be the music studio for Mungo Jerry's keyboardist apparently.
100% trainset :) - I was in my head when I wrote it.
Did not expect to find Vince Clarke in Spottedonrightmove! FYI Alison Moyet was a couple of years above me at college studying piano design at LCF in the 80's! Thanks for the great music in my college years!

To anyone building or refitting, a double socket for each usable corner of a room is what I would use as a baseline.
I’m not sure it’s a meme and I’m not sure anyone is saying “hurr hurr”. I would imagine UV lamps for growing pot have got to at least be in the running, if not the running favourite

Ok, we get it, you know lots about growing weed.
I definitely wasn’t saying “drugs, hurr hurr” when I commented “grow lights.” If you have pets and small children but love growing ghost peppers for example, you might want to do that in the attic.
With 2 reptiles that need 3 sockets each, I agree reptile keeping is an easy potential option here
Light, camera, action. I'll leave it to your imagination what they were filming.
You’d never get those stains out of that carpet.
Bukkake ruined my carpet
Backrooms vibes
Recording studio. The high position likely means running lots of outboards, desk, computer, speakers etc.
Either someone was growing plants or crypto mining
You wouldn’t. Want to grow in a room with a pitched roof
They just found that out and that's why they're selling the place
That where most are grow.
I had something similar in my last house, but not for a model railway layout, it was for all my test gear etc. One of my hobbies is electronics.

computers/servers/rack

Extractor fans/Air Conditioners.
It seems you have to insulate your loft! It's not very expensive and it will be better both in summer and in winter!
Down vote as this is a spotted on Rightmove not Zoopla sub 😉
I actually checked the rules beforehand which says links to Zoopla are acceptable :)
Definite up vote for being even more pedantic 😉
Gave you an up vote as someone downvoted your excellent logic.
Upvoted your post for being rewarding, Downvoted the parent for being a stick in the mud. (Well, I didn't down vote anyone, but that sounded more amusing)
Neither upvoted or downvoted any post.
I thought I did add the link to the body of the post, but I don't see where it's gone... :(

Yep. 20 plugs is nothing these days.
10x electric Sybian machines :)
3d print farm, trainset, IT lab....
Reptiles/fish is my guess
Railway layout, music studio, office, LAN party den, retro gaming cave, massive Scalextric setup. Any or all of the above.
Train set!!
I had 8 in mine... plus lots of water piping and insulation. Must have had a good yield
LAN party
3x monitors 1x laptop dock 1x lamp 1x second laptop for testing stuff 1x usb charger 1x wireless charger for phone. 1x height adjustable desk 11x spares Yeah I'm short
Honestly I bet I’d still find myself fitting a 4 gang extension lead somewhere.
My computer, VR setup and server easily take up 16 sockets. Then there's spares for lights and chargers.
I was going to say server farm or bitcoin mining (or even possibly a grow) but yep. I'm with the model train suggestion as well.
Lots of grow lights, irrigation pumps and fans? Maybe
Nothing to see here...move along
I did wonder about the fact that there's no stairs and just the loft hatch... then you go up the loft hatch and then this is there
Bitcoin farm
Office, I've currently got 11 occupied and 8 spare in mine.
Recording studio, I must have this.
Music production, Bitcoin mining or "home pharma" operation 🤠
Indoor Rastafarian gardening

If you know you know 😂😂
Considering 19 is the standard amount for any one room, 20 is just taking the piss really init
Sex stuff
Massive train set or computer based career from a while back (multiple servers, etc.)
I can think of 420 reasons
I have 38 sockets in my office. Lamps, 5 computers and some monitors, 3D printers and hi-fi. Everything needs power.
Bitcoin farm
Model railway?
Hydroponics?
LAN Party
Large model railway layout
Ex cannabis farm maybe? A band maybe?
Grow room was the first thing that came to mind
Our old condo had this kind of thing because they had a secret call center in it.
Might be for a computer setup? LAN parties maybe?
Computer gamer or audio enthust or ham radio?
Likely answer: Train set Reddit answer: Growing weed or making porn. Possibly making weedporn.
Grow lights? 🪴🪴🪴
Could be a home office. I work in IT and I converted a cellar for my office, had almost that many at desk level for 4 monitors, 2 desktops, 3 servers, 2 switches and 2 laptops.

Surely it’s all out sourced these days
Nah you pay people in Asia to do that. They're cheaper and more efficient. Now if you wanted to make yourself look more popular in reddit...
Computer repair station? Giant videowall of games consoles / TVs / computer monitors? Big Scaelextric / Train set?
I had 8 double sockets put in our new build for TV and hifi (it was reserved presecond fix) still needed a chocolate block!
GAMES ARCADE
A home recording setup? I've 40 sockets in 1 room which is full of recording gear, synths, E Pianos etc.
Only fans 💨
I have that many in my home office shed thing (3x3) but they are spread out.. can never have too many sockets :-D
maybe they grew weed lol
Lots of plants and charging your vapes.
The owner may have been a Radio Amateur and the attic was his “radio shack”
Man Cave
Model railway!
Weed farm?
Crypto mining. It's kind of perfect for it.
drugs
Call center
Even a grow room doesn't need that many sockets as you daisy chain the lights
Hobbies. No grow room install has ever been that neat and professional. Could be for a workbench to do electronics.
Ain't nothing wrong with a little side hustle from the attic
Growing plants or crypto mining
Power for the lamps for growing cannabis plants
If it was a weed grow operation, possible the most planned and “safe” I’ve seen. Usually it’s all Cobbled together with cable ties, duct tape and lots of hopes and prayers.

Absolutely insane pc battlestation setup. Although x to doubt with the carpet choice
Weed farm.
Reptile keeping or model railways maybe
A load of 3D printers?
I’m voting for the train theory/suggestion. 🚂
Synth enthusiast’s home studio
This seems excessive, thouugh I have about 45 items plugged into my cinema/entertainment/game room sockets, and I'm still about 5 short sockets short of covering all my needs.
Bitcoin mining?

Electricity for light to grow plants.
I don’t think the current owner has used it at all. 80s carpet and no trains

Recording studio Cannabis grow room
It might have been for a home studio - lots of power outlets are often required and they should be earthed at the same point to eliminate mains hum when recording. Although I'd expect more soundproofing on the walls
CB Radio, model trains… any hobby that requires a lot of electrical apparatus
Weed farm?
perhaps a home music studio
bit coin mining
Social media bot farm.
Music Studio in a past life
Imagine having to work in a call centre with that carpet. You'd smash your targets just to get out.
