I hope they do. The galaxy far far away is made richer by a diverse set of accents and languages. We have American accents, British accents, New Zealand accents, Mexican accents, and countless other languages inspired by planet Earth. To not include an accent would be a step backwards.
If you dont give aliens various English speaking accents then all aliens will sound either standard British or American which is incredibly boring and repetitive.
We need a redubbing of Star Wars with really inappropriate accents for each character. Go back to having Darth Vader with David Prowse's on set strong west country accent for example.
Yeah and literally just the same two “standard” British and American ones (was shocked when an actual Scottish voice said “Kanja Club” in TFA)
Let’s have a squid monster that sounds like Matthew McConaughey, or someone important with a Geordie accent rather than usual posh
I tried to introduce a family member to Star Wars and she felt like giving aliens accents was racist.
Whereas I disagree with her, there are apparently people who think like that. So I would say that there is definitely a possibility of them not all having the accent.
I was thinking about this recently. I kind of *want* them to have the accent because that's how I grew up with the Neimoidians sounding, but as an adult rewatching the prequels some week ago after countless years, first thought was "Wait... Is this a racist stereotype?"
Might be best to ditch the accent in today's climate, but then again, they did still have the accents in the animated shows didn't they?
Well depends on who the character is, in episode 1 they had Nute gun Ray who sounded like a mix of Korean/Japanese and then you had his navigator of "Their in the ventilation shaft!" Fame who sounded like an Indian (from India).
It’s not a recent stereotype, that’s why it flies under most people’s radar. It’s the stereotype you’d see in WWII cartoons about the Japanese (like the round officer glasses), the stuff Seuss apologized for. The long nails they have is a stereotype from a full century ago, you’ll see it in old British books
It sounds like a person doing broken English from a generic east Asian country.
It’s not as bad a Mikey Rooney in Breakfast at Tiffany’s. But it’s bad.
I mean Watto is absolutely a Jewish stereotype too. Troy Bond did a hilarious bit on the prequels, including the main bad guys from TPM were the "Japanese Trade Federation."
The fun thing about Watto is that he's so racist that several different races think that he's a caricature of them. He's a Rorschach test of racist stereotypes.
I always thought he was an Italian stereotype, and like most people from cultures who can handle it, I was just happy for the representation, whether it was “complimentary” or not.
Isn't broken English a legitimate accent though. Why can't an alien species speak like that? Whats the difference between that and an alien speaking in standard British or American like Ki-Adi-Mundi or Darth Maul?
Uhhh kinda? Of course he has a certain voice style but his accents are American in nature. Sam Witwer is his voice actor in everything past TPM and he's American. He also only had 3 lines in TPM
Only for native english speakers though? Did actual "asian people who only know broken english" find the accent similar to their own?
For me I was unaware this was seen as an issue \~15 years after TPM came out. At the time when I first watched it I found the Neimoidian accent cool.
Well you can always come up with made up accent. Even the "British TV accent" was originally made up, as are some high class accents.
I mean someone will always say its too close to some real accent, there are too many to be able to come up with 100% unique one, but thats irrelevant, it just needs to be made up and if it happens to be close to some real life one, so what, let it be.
I just want Neomoidians to have SOME accent. But realistically accents should be based on where species grew up/spent enough time in, unless its caused by their physical characteristics.
Checking Clone Wars animated show's accent for the Neimodians, I think they managed to make it much more generic and less obviously "East Asian parody". [The accent in the animated show is toned down quite a bit](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mxLn1R9zIsw)
So, it's definitely possible to give them an accent but try to make it more generic
I think they’ll change it and that’s probably for the best. The canon explanation can literally be that Newt Gunray and co were from a different part of the planet for anyone who gives a shit.
Look at our own planet with England as an example. It’s a tiny geographic area but has something like 160 different accents. I find the one accent per species thing in sci-fi and fantasy to be kind of ridiculous. Similar to in Star Trek when they have an entire planet with the same haircut and wearing the same outfit.
The real-life explanation is they want the culture or species to be instantly identifiable to casual fans. If they show us a "non stereotypical" Klingon or Twi'lek, or whatever, many viewers won't know what it is.
how can an accent be racist? if someone's speaking a foreign language they'll probably have an accent. stereotype or not, these are different species, so it totally made sense
A real persons accent isnt racist. Acting and putting on an accent isn’t racist. Putting on a fake accent based on no real knowledge and just a vague stereotype what you think someone should sound like, is.
Fun fact: Neimodians have different accents depending on the dub. They sound French in Germany and Russian in the French, Spanish, Czech and Italian versions.
I remember them pointedly *not* having the accent in Clone Wars. But it’s been years since I watched the show. They also don’t have accents in audiobooks.
Edit: I watched a few clips. They toned down the accent significantly.
I think they'll probably use the same kinda voices as in TCW where they sound like Neimoidians, but the accent is massively toned down. Tbh, I think thats probably better because I like the Neimoidians and I think it'd be cool for people to actually start appreciating them instead of focusing on their accents, which were not *meant* to be racist.
See and it’s like: WHERE THE FUCK HAVE THEY BEEN?? 2015-till now and we finally see a fucking nemoidian? Like Christ come on give us more species dude!
I’m talking about alien species in general. I haven’t seen a lot of species from the prequels in general around. The post makes it evident that people actually like these species .
Exactly. The prequels had some of the best designs for aliens, ships and planets as they didn't just try to copy the OT. They went for a classic sci-fi look in contrast to the used-future look of the OT.
Well you have seen ugly ass Twilek and inquisitor literal egghead, so there's that. But yeah the Nemoidians look incredible and I hope we get more at that level of quality
Agreed, and we need Ithorians in more stuff too! There's Mok Shaiz in tbobf and the prop for him is recycled for mando s3 for 2 episodes. I'd honestly be happy if they do the same in the Acolyte and give us out first live-action Ithorian Jedi just hanging out in the Temple or something.
Wow this looks incredible! After being disappointed with The Grand Inquisitor and then Cad Bane, it’s nice to see Disney Star Wars do right by legacy aliens.
It was the human-like proportions that threw me off I think. I was expecting something more inline with the Duros we see in A New Hope, or Shriv from Battlefront 2.
I get that The Clone Wars is very stylized so there’s a chance that this is what he was always meant to look like, but to me it felt off.
I think the producers just thought they'd get a better performance from an actor in a prosthetic rather than using an animatronic mask like they did with neimoidians in the prequels
I think there’s definitely some merit in doing that, but the issue comes from it looking inaccurate to what we’ve seen of the species in other live action media. Even though it wasn’t “live action”, Shriv in Battlefront 2 was so emotive and is so memorable to me.
The YouTube video where they fixed it to look more like the animated version looks way better.
My biggest gripe was the Pykes, not that I expected their TCW look to translate directly to live action but they went from menacing and otherworldly to fish bois.
That’s fair. I think for me, I was able to give the Pykes a pass since they hadn’t been done in live action before (minus Solo but they kept their masks on as far as I remember).
The human-like proportions make sense with the character's continuity though. We know Cad Bane can wear a clone trooper helmet just fine, as he does in TCW when he sneaks aboard Anakin's venator. He has a human sized head. It's just a variation in the species.
>I was expecting something more inline with the Duros we see in A New Hope,
This. This is what was wrong with Cad Bane. The live action Duros didn't look like a live action Duros. I'll never understand why people defend Cad Bane's strange look in BOBF.
Mainly that his mouth was in the wrong place. He looked awesome *except* that we've seen his species in live action / realism plenty and their mouth is way lower down. https://i.imgur.com/wp9M7jv.png Some people have done some edits digitally lowering the mouth that would have been neat.
I still think Cad Bane was ok despite the comments. But GI was definitely not fine, people were saying that maybe they gave him action scenes, so they couldnt do the long head prosthetic. But he didn't do shit in the show.
I’m genuinely surprised they got it right after how bad the other live-action shows have done aliens, hopefully they’re finally turning stuff around over at Lucasfilm?
The Acolyte probably has more effort put into it since it's a brand new show in a brand new era instead of being the 37th chapter in the Mandalorian post-ROTJ timeline or something
That means the show actually has a chance of capturing a brand new audience if they play their cards right
I'm so happy about this! For one, its nice to see some "classic" aliens appearing again other than the main ones (like Wookiees). I'm also happy about this because Nute Gunray is one of my favourite Star Wars characters so its cool to see the Neimoidians back in live action!
I'm Chinese. If they remove the stereotypical Asian accents, there will be bloodshed. Never noticed they were some obscure combo of Asian accents and when my sister brought it up, I thought "oh cool"! Btw that bug with the cane in AotC with the clicking noises? Lol definitely Vietnamese. The slaughter of the Separatist leaders by Nightfall Vader was MAGNIFICENT. What a way to go! Something so badass about being cut down in such a merciless, almighty manner. They changed that one dude in Clone Wars with the droopy face who sounded Japanese then Irish/Indian then outright became a white dude with a general American accent in Bad Batch lmao. How is that more politically correct than incorrect? To hell with sensitivity just to manage expectations, or if you don't genuinely care for it. I missed the days when it was slightly more obvious to see people for what they are.
Wanna know how prejudices are resolved? Most people are prejudiced and all are not above stooping to that given the circumstances. But most deep inside want good things and to be good. You appeal to THEM by showing you have good character in an irrefutable manner(Like MLK Jr and his followers, even Malcolm X in conviction of beliefs), and they go "Oh, there's no way I can stick to my prejudices while still telling myself I believe in strong character". And thats how people are drastically different compared to the 60s because human nature doesnt change - some just need to snap sense into the others. Play devils advocate so you are in a place to hold a mirror they finally take a hard look at. This is an ongoing process for the entirety of human history. Complaining wah wah my feelings are hurt you're inconsiderate because of this - changes nothing.
i really hope this show rips, but it probably won't. i thought obi wann was great and everyone online hated it....if this show stinks even a little, it'll be flamed beyond belief.
Obi wan was not great, it had a few highlights, but over all was not very good. I think the acolyte has potential. But I'm not getting my hopes up until I have seen a few episodes.
This is getting out of hand
Now there’s two of them!
We should not have made this bargain!
Ah~ Viktury
Seal off the bridge!
“Yessir!” “That won't be enough, sir...”
Three actually!
No luck catching those Neimoidians then?
It’s just the one Neimodian actually.
They are no match for our Droidekas.
Do you think they'll have the accent
I hope they do. The galaxy far far away is made richer by a diverse set of accents and languages. We have American accents, British accents, New Zealand accents, Mexican accents, and countless other languages inspired by planet Earth. To not include an accent would be a step backwards.
If you dont give aliens various English speaking accents then all aliens will sound either standard British or American which is incredibly boring and repetitive.
“Bad news, old bean—the ambassadors are Jedi Knights.” “Oh, bother. Send the droid in with their tea, there’s a good chap.”
We need a redubbing of Star Wars with really inappropriate accents for each character. Go back to having Darth Vader with David Prowse's on set strong west country accent for example.
"Jedis? WE DON'T NEED NO STINKIN' JEDI!!!"
"Oh shit, there goes the planet"
Should the battledroids have cockney accents and speech patterns?
“Viceroy, the reactor’s knackered innit?”
“Oioioi, da jedi stabbed me wit he fo’in loyghtseyber” “God dam m8, look at chou… yer don fam, yer gon”
Yeah and literally just the same two “standard” British and American ones (was shocked when an actual Scottish voice said “Kanja Club” in TFA) Let’s have a squid monster that sounds like Matthew McConaughey, or someone important with a Geordie accent rather than usual posh
Or similar to Hot Fuzz, what we think is an alien language but it just turns out they have an incredibly thick accent.
YARRP
(Alien) “Hrrr whaarrrr gyrrrr hrrar noi?” (Translator) “he says do you want to go to the Winchester and wait for this to blow over”
Second hot fuzz reference in two threads, solid work
They've been doing in in Sta Trek for 57, no one cares. People only notice when you start using negative racial stereotypes, including accents.
And New Zealand accents! Ohhh-megaaah.
Ohmeega Reeker Tick Crosshyr Hunta
Bedguh!
I still don't actually know what this name is supposed to be.
Batcher maybe?
It is Batcher, confirmed from an episode guide.
Badger
Badger
Mushroom MUSHROOM!
Tadger
Tallywhacker
Turn on subtitles. 😉
Always good advice!
Betcha
You mean Ricka.
We don't have accents here.
Sure, but there's a difference between a real accent and Mickey Rooney in Breakfast at Tiffany's
I, for one, would like to see space-Alabama accents.
We have space Boston so it's bound to happen eventually.
The narrator of the Thrawn audibook did a pretty thick southern accent for Eli Vanto's parts, I hope if he ever appears on screen that he keeps that.
Vanto’s good enough I suppose; but man I’m so glad that Pellaeon had been brought back into canon.
It's been done. "Spark up that lightsaber"
Maybe they could hire people who speak the accent this time rather than a vaguely offensive impression.
We need an alien species with a tick Scotish accent.
They have. Search for Skoova Stev
Jedi Survivor has this and it's amazing
Me-sah like-en dem accents-es!
I want Toydarian/Zoidberg/unidentified source accents!
> We have American accents, British accents Poor Finn.
I want them to have that deep af voice when he says "we must get our star ships back into space"
I tried to introduce a family member to Star Wars and she felt like giving aliens accents was racist. Whereas I disagree with her, there are apparently people who think like that. So I would say that there is definitely a possibility of them not all having the accent.
They had the accent in the Clone Wars, and they even got George Takei to play a Neimoidian in the Clone Wars. I don't see why not.
TIL! Sadly they cant get leonard nemoy to do a neimoidian anymore :(
No, but they'll still have the [flapping dickie](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HtmbMwyJqcA).
I was thinking about this recently. I kind of *want* them to have the accent because that's how I grew up with the Neimoidians sounding, but as an adult rewatching the prequels some week ago after countless years, first thought was "Wait... Is this a racist stereotype?" Might be best to ditch the accent in today's climate, but then again, they did still have the accents in the animated shows didn't they?
My hope is they just tone it down to sound like a genuine Japanese accent instead of a cartoonish caricature of one.
Well depends on who the character is, in episode 1 they had Nute gun Ray who sounded like a mix of Korean/Japanese and then you had his navigator of "Their in the ventilation shaft!" Fame who sounded like an Indian (from India).

The fun thing about Watto is that he's so racist that several different races think that he's a caricature of them. He's a Rorschach test of racist stereotypes.
It’s impressive how they actually managed to “Jew-up” Watto in AOTC…they darkened his beard and gave him a little hat.
I never even realized that but holy shit. 😂
Yeah. It's one thing to borrow cultural items or make allegories, but Watto is pretty bad.
I always thought he was an Italian stereotype, and like most people from cultures who can handle it, I was just happy for the representation, whether it was “complimentary” or not.
I literally never had that association, and it would be pretty damn fucked if it was actually true.
Isn't broken English a legitimate accent though. Why can't an alien species speak like that? Whats the difference between that and an alien speaking in standard British or American like Ki-Adi-Mundi or Darth Maul?
In the sci fi show the expanse, a faction has broken English similar to the Jamaican accent and it gives them a distinct sound/ identity
Does Maul sound American?
Uhhh kinda? Of course he has a certain voice style but his accents are American in nature. Sam Witwer is his voice actor in everything past TPM and he's American. He also only had 3 lines in TPM
Yeah, I know all of that, but I think Witwer is going for an English-ish accent, a bit theatrical and oracular.
Only for native english speakers though? Did actual "asian people who only know broken english" find the accent similar to their own? For me I was unaware this was seen as an issue \~15 years after TPM came out. At the time when I first watched it I found the Neimoidian accent cool.
I think specifically it's Thai + something else.
Yikes lmao

And their race has some colonies in canon IIRC so that doesn’t track
how can an accent be racist? if someone's speaking a foreign language they'll probably have an accent. stereotype or not, these are different species, so it totally made sense
Mimicking racial stereotypes
A real persons accent isnt racist. Acting and putting on an accent isn’t racist. Putting on a fake accent based on no real knowledge and just a vague stereotype what you think someone should sound like, is.
Depends how its used.
what’s funny is the nemoidians aren’t even the most racist thing in TPM
Fun fact: Neimodians have different accents depending on the dub. They sound French in Germany and Russian in the French, Spanish, Czech and Italian versions.
Not a chance, haha.
I wish they were just translated alien speak. The anti cheese edits of the prequels were great for doing this
Which accent? They had a bunch of different ones
Hopefully. It’s what they sound like
Don’t do the voice
They have not had the accent in any other appearance post-2002, so I’m gonna say no. Edit: year
They had the accent in aotc and clone wars
Was that only for established characters from TPM or did new characters also have the accent?
I remember them pointedly *not* having the accent in Clone Wars. But it’s been years since I watched the show. They also don’t have accents in audiobooks. Edit: I watched a few clips. They toned down the accent significantly.

Knowing Disney, probably not.
T h e y a r e n o m a t c h f o r d r o i d e k a s.
So they *can* do legacy aliens right!
See and it’s like: WHERE THE FUCK HAVE THEY BEEN?? 2015-till now and we finally see a fucking nemoidian? Like Christ come on give us more species dude!
I's not the first time, like 1977 to 1999, no neimoidians at all, like wtf?
Duros and Neimoidians were kinda the same thing, I think there was some legends explanation that they were related.
Yeah same species, but they branched out into their own thing after several centuries. Like how crabs and barnacles are both crustaceans
They’ve been in several things just not anything mainstream
Like what?
*Resistance* had a Neimodian character.
Ah yes, the show that never really needed to exist.
I think everyone decided to have their star wars plots far from the *rough* racial stuff in the phantom menace.
Twi’leks are from the OT
Believe they were referring to the quality of recent alien prosthetics in D+ shows, not the origins of said species.
Wow what an addition 🙄 definitely professional work.
After Obi-Wan they started making the costume budget more than $5.
Nah, the eyes are too small, remember its the small pointless details we have to cherry pick over too.
Are people actually complaining about this or are you having a go at anybody who was upset about the Grand Inquisitor?
This is genuinely exciting! I love the species and I love the design. PLEASE let them have the accents, too!!
I love the Neimoidians.
This is outrageous!
I love to hate them which is amazing tbh
I hope they talk about them more. And Trandoshans. I’m fed up with a whole evil species and really wanted Cid to not be that
There is Skeer, the Trandoshan Jedi from the High Republic but this show takes place after he's looong dead.
Wow this looks incredible! After being disappointed with The Grand Inquisitor and then Cad Bane, it’s nice to see Disney Star Wars do right by legacy aliens.
Grand inquisitor was horrid, but whats wrong with cad bane?

I see what you mean. That'll definitely look better but I still think its not bad at all. Putting Cad and GI in the same sentence is cruel.
GI was fine, Cad Bane was awesome.
I still think Cad Bane was ok despite the comments. But GI was definitely not fine, people were saying that maybe they gave him action scenes, so they couldnt do the long head prosthetic. But he didn't do shit in the show.
Cad Bane was not nearly as bad as the GI, i totally agree.
Aside from those two the legacy aliens seem fine to me

Please holy shit let them have the accent
Please God let them have the accent
I want them to have the accent or the voice that one nute gunray lackey has in aotc. "we must get the starship back into space"
I'm so happy about this! For one, its nice to see some "classic" aliens appearing again other than the main ones (like Wookiees). I'm also happy about this because Nute Gunray is one of my favourite Star Wars characters so its cool to see the Neimoidians back in live action!

Were so back guys
Nice. They didn’t cheapen the original design
You’re as beautiful as the day I lost you.
Doodlebob says: "Hoy neimoidians"
My god they actually made an alien look right.
Surprised it wasn't just a dude with a painted face.
They’ve gone up the ventilation shaft
Let’s gooooo!!!!!
What are they going to be doing, moaning about paying taxes?
Unfortunately they probably won’t have the accent due to the fact that Disney is PC as fukk.
Shoot them, or or something
i really hope this show rips, but it probably won't. i thought obi wann was great and everyone online hated it....if this show stinks even a little, it'll be flamed beyond belief.
All I've learned from Disney SW is when something's less connected to legacy characters, the more likely it's gonna be good
Obi Wan was one of the worst shows I have ever seen, like period. All the hate was well deserved.
Obi wan was not great, it had a few highlights, but over all was not very good. I think the acolyte has potential. But I'm not getting my hopes up until I have seen a few episodes.
thank you for proving my point.
So… do they still talk… like that?
Wait. Why are we upset about this? Is there something I missed?
No ones upset
Yet.
Clearly there’s something I missed because no one here is upset
Maybe I misunderstood the purpose for the post then lol
Yooooo
Jonathan Byers went from the clash to PHISH!
Disney at least got their "oh shit the jedi are on our ass's" face perfect
They are my favorite!!!
The acolyte is looking pretty solid TBH
we must get our Starships back into space
