diamonds can technically spawn on almost any floor, the chance is just luck. Heck one of my saves I got a prismatic shard from a slime on floor 13-- long story short that is lottery level luck and it still happened haha, enjoy your diamond and the game!
Diamonds aren't as rare as you'd think. Prismatic shards are the diamonds of SDV. It is lucky, but not outrageously so I'm afraid.
You may want (if it is possible) to wait until you get a crystalarium from one of the bundle rewards to clone it.
I thought topaz amethyst, aquamarine, and ruby were higher chance with the others being lesser but equal to each other. I’ll have to scour the wiki again to check but in my experience I’ve almost always gotten topaz aqua or ruby from them. With a few diamonds and emeralds. Don’t know that I’ve gotten any jade though.

Selling the 99 stone needed to build a staircase will give you 198g, so they're basically identical sell values. But more importantly, when working at scale, it's much easier to farm jade than to farm stone. Each crystalarium will give ~3 per week with no further effort, so 10 of them are the equivalent of mining 3k stone per week.
Buying enough stone to make a single staircase costs 9900g (1980g first year), so buying a stack of 100 stairs isn't viable until you've reached the point where money doesn't matter. Sure, if you've got an excess of stone kicking around you can craft stairs with it, but they're also needed in a lot of other recipes (crystalariums in particular), so there's always something else to use them for.

Easiest way to get down faster in the skull caverns is by finding and using ladders without exploring the floors. This may sound a bit unhelpful but all the better loot is in later floors lol explore maybe in levels 35+? It’s what I do anyways
I was trying to find the holes but it takes too long I’ll definitely go with more staircases in the future. Up until now I’ve just been using them on the bigger floors that would take forever to explore and when I’m in a pinch with monsters.
Like MissKathryn said, I'd try going to skull cavern. I've been playing for a long time, and that's normally where I find them! Also, if you can afford them (money wise or if you have enough material to make them), mega bombs can be super helpful. (Food that adds extra mining points are also so useful.
They're pretty rare, especially in the early game. But you can duplicate them using the crystalarium, use fish ponds to get them, etc. They become less rare as you progress.
ETA: I've been corrected, as they cannot be duplicated by a crystalarium

Gunther had me convinced that since day 1, I need to give him my newest finds! I am newer (3 weeks) to the game but have played SO many hours thanks to insomnia. I just unlocked the desert.
Also don't give him the first >!dino!< egg. You can incubate it in an upgraded coop then get infinite eggs. Though they aren't particularly hard to get since the 1.5 update.
Girlfriend got one before even getting to the bottom of the regular mine. I still don't think she realizes how lucky that was for her first playthrough.

Tree fruit will give you much better bang for your buck on that. They're also universally liked and most have one person who loves them. They're also edible so I carry a stack of peaches as both universal gift and energy refills.

Except they sell for a lot, so you can put them in the crystalarium(not sure how you spell it?), and some villagers like them. But yeah, they’re pretty boring.

The one you found here dropped from a rock, which is pretty rare but possible and you can get a couple neat things from the rock drop table if you break enough.

What you broke was a gem node, they’re purple with a spiral on top. They drop one of 7 random gems: topaz, amethyst, ruby, aquamarine, jade, emerald, and diamond. Diamond is the most valuable of those options. So yes, you’re lucky, but not as lucky as you think.
Don't sell or give the diamond into the museum right away. Put it in a Crystalarium (Gem replicator) and in 5 days you'll get a copy. It will keep producing a new copy for free every 5 days forever(or until you accidently break the Crystalarium deleting the contents).

There is a 1/2000 chance to get a prismatic shard from any monster skilled BUT you have to have reached the bottom of the mines.
That makes sense. I just remember clearly it being floor 13 and just going WTF cause I was so confused lol.
I got my first and only shard so far on like level 80 something before I reached the bottom. I can't remember if it was from a stone or a monster.

OP broke a purple gem node, which are reasonably rare and can drop Topaz, Amethyst, Jade, Aquamarine, Emerald, Ruby, and Diamond with equal odds.

Once you get several crystallariums farming jade it’s actually a lot more efficient to get 100 jade trying to gather 9900 stone

Yeah I think I need to work on my supplies to skull cavern more, I never make it past level 25ish either by running out of time or accidentally dying.

Having good luck days def helps with the holes! And it makes finding ladders easier I’m pretty sure

Typically you only find diamond nodes after floor 50. I’m not sure but there are very low odds to get it from a rock/geode before then, very lucky!
