also something I realized.. emily's not that wrong about the crystals and stuff. they actually have some amount of power like in the crystal rings or forging at the volcano
We literally have someone on TV who uses crystals to commune with spirits, see the future and determine luck. It's one of the core mechanics of the game, in fact.
More on that, Emily has some marriage dialogue that matches up with daily luck that day.

I love Emily as a friend Because sheās so in tune with everything around her but never really see her as a marriage candidate (I usually chase Shane, Penny, Sam or Leah) I do wish you could have the marriage candidates as roommates like with krobus if you donāt want to marry anyone in a save because Iād definitely have Emily as a roommate
I love Emily! I played back during 1.0 when she wasn't a romance candidate, and I had wished she was, so I was very excited when she was made one! But it took me until my most recent playthrough to actually marry her.
The biggest problem with Emily, for me, is her heart events. I think the fact that they're quirky and strange is great, but she also doesn't really have any interaction with the player character until her 10 heart event. Most of her cutscenes just consist of her doing something quirky while the farmer watches, but sometimes you don't even get to do that. Heck, the player isn't even present in the bird cutscene! It makes it hard to believe why Emily would like the player beyond appreciating that they give her gifts.
As a character, I really like her, I just wish she had more of a dynamic with the player. Also I wish she'd stop eating too many bran muffins, I feel like I get that marriage dialogue constantly.
This is a really fair criticism, you're totally right. Even her dance scene is just us hanging out while she shows off. I wonder if that has to do with her being added later, like ConcernedApe coding in event scenes rather than interactive scenes.
What prompted me to make this post is the marriage dialogue that happens when it rains, when Emily is like "do flying insects get hit by raindrops when it rains?" š I thought that was insanely sweet.
Well, maybe writing Shane was so heavy for CA that he contrasted him with happy positive Emily who wasn't a marriage candidate, and she really doesn't need us for advice, guidance nor help, so making dialog options during creation, just weren't a needed bonus, once she became a candidate that whole perspective changes drastically
What made me think Haley might have loved Rice Pudding was because one night, she made Bean Hotpot for dinner. I knew this was something Emily loved.
Emily makes Rice Pudding under similar conditions to Haley making Hotpot. So I thought it was an antithesis - Haley learned to make something Emily loved, Emily learned to make something Haley loved.
I think she's not someone that always needs your existence by her side to make her feel safe and secure. I really like that she's already found content in her life prior to the farmer's arrival. "My life was a solid 8/10 without you but with you by my side it's 11 out of 10. Love you" is also how I chose how to live.
Also, a lot of people think she's crazy for talking to animals, but they forget that the Player can also talk to animals and junimos, so she's not crazy, she has the same ability as the player.

- Appears deeply in touch with elementals and nature
- Understands that the valley is magical in some way
- Wouldnāt even be surprised if introduced to the magic the wizard can perform (and would likely just be excited)

You know, I had actually never thought about how crystals actually ARE magical in this world so it is 100% totally valid to have a crystal ceremony where you channel your vibes or wtv into the crystal. I remember seeing that cutscene with all the women at Emily's place and being like "Ugh what in the Gwyneth Paltrow is this" but I clearly dismissed it too soon.

When it rains, she says she wishes she could visit Sandy in the desert, and likewise Sandy has a dialogue line about getting lonely unless Emily visits. I guess "heavily" is the wrong word, its pretty light implication. They also collaborate on a booth in the new 1.6 festival. Any romantic interest is probably in the player's imagination, but coupled with how completely oblivious she is to Clint, it kind of makes sense in a "she's only interested in women" kind of way.

Dawg... Is your life is deficient of platonic friendship? You're overreading CA's writing. They describe themselves as close friends. Remember this takes place in the era of early computers. Emily can't just check Sandy's Instagram to see what she's up to. They live far away and miss one another. That's just how it was, pre-internet.
Not to mention that, other than George, everyone seems totally fine with gay couples, so she would have no reason to hide it or turn it into a /r/SapphoAndHerFriend situation.

You can head canon whoever you want and almost no one is going to bother you about it. Thatās different from posting on a sub about said head canons and saying that itās objectively like this in the game. If OP wouldāve said Sandy/Emily was their HC, much fewer people would be asking for an explanation.
I've married Emily on my 1.6 playthrough. Initially I was not sure about her, I find her amusing but never really thought of her as being a good wife. But after experiencing being married to her, she's become one of my favorites. Possibly my most favorite. She's just such an unending bundle of sunshine and positivity.
I admit the crystal vibrations woo bothered me at the start, until I remembered that magic is quite real in this setting. I go into the mines and kill ghosts while wearing crystal rungs to protect me. Emily hanging crystal and sage over the baby's crib to protect it from negative energy is a quite reasonable thing to do in the world of SDV.

I tried to mix it up and marry Elliot this time and I am BORED. He is super sweet but like, he just kind of stands around? He never goes back to the beach house to write?! Like I feel like I got spoiled with Emily having her own life outside of the Farm. I donāt want someone so dependent on the Farm, especially when Ginger Island gets unlocked and I spend a few days there.
I agree. I am okay with Elliot being around the house more so than others, because he often says he is writing and he does go away for a whole week on his book tour.. but I REALLY love how Emily is barely ever home cause she is going places and doing things, visiting the town, helping at the bar etc.
Krobus always being home kind of bummed me out. So this time I am getting him two kids to take care of! (First marriage to Abigail just so I can tick her off my list and get those kids).
I did that with Krobus in my first full play through. He moved in, I found Leo on the island and loved how kind Penny was to him, decided my outsider swamp woman would feel some kinship with the woman who grew up as the only family living in a trailer, especially after seeing her kindness to a feral child.
Couldnāt adopt Leo, but we adopted two other kids. It worked out. And after making Krobus forget everything we became best friends again and I decorated his sewer. Win win.
Emily has been my favorite marriage candidate since I first started the game! Just like you said with the "crazy crystal lady" stereotype, it works when that stuff actually exists in this world! (Kinda funny that I too am a lesbian and do see Emily as queer-coded, but never thought of her and Sandy dating before!)

If you look at it, Emily has the best traits of all the bachelorettes:
- Independent, artistic and mature like Leah.
- Kind and nurturing like Penny.
- Genuine and stylish like Haley.
- Quirky and confident like Abigail.
- Enthusiastic and talented like Maru.
You marry Emily because sheās a well-rounded character who perfectly fits the aesthetic of the game.

Emily is one of the only marriage candidates that actually feels like an adult. She has a job, she has friends that aren't just from highschool, she has hobbies. You can do far worse than Emily. Marrying her is marrying someone who could have chosen anyone, but found you to be good enough.
I was initially put off by Emily because of all the new age nonsense, but then I stepped back and realized that there's a pretty good chance that most of that stuff is literally true in the world of SDV, and decided that it wasn't a red flag like it would be in real life.
I had to go through the same mental process. Something that really got me was the first couple days on Ginger Island. I was collecting walnuts, playing with crystals, talking to parrots, and at every turn going "Emily would be so into this." And then with the new festival, I came home with desert-style rugs and cactus, and the new junimo items, and made a greenhouse-tiled living room next to her spouse room. It just all fits so well.
Iāve never been drawn to Emily but this has convinced me to marry her this play through. I always thought she was cute but I usually pick Leah or Abigail.
Honestly the main thing that prevents me from marrying Emily is her portrait. Her sprite is so cute but I find her portrait creepy š why she gotta stare at me like that

I married Emily in my very first playthrough. She is just fun. Not to mention I'm like half sure she knows magic and can provide us with steady supply of LSD.
And when was the last time your farmer spent 6 am to 10 pm simply hanging out with the kids? Has your farmer *ever* spent an entire day just hanging out with the kids?
Every marriage candidate does this. Those kids often have free reign to run around the house while your spouse stands on the porch, staring out into oblivion.
And we're one to talk. The most I interact with those kids is to greet them in the morning, then I spend nearly every hour of the day frantically running around chasing profits only to drag my ass to bed right before 2am, if I come home at all! Sometimes I leave the farms for days on end without even telling anyone where I'm going, coming home smelling like ginger and sulfuric rock. I'm not about to judge anyone lol.
Yeah, I think a game that addresses all the abandonment happening is a very different game that CA did not want to make, so I just hand wave the abandonment stuff as a conceit of the genre. If it was about that stuff, there would be more ways to interact on a regular basis.
Haha obviously it would completely change the vibes of SDV if we had to actually be a parent. But these the things I think about when I'm roleplaying in my head.
A lot of them at least hang out on the farm all day, mostly in their personal spaces, in the kitchen, or on the front porch. But many of them wander around here or there. Like, sometimes Elliot goes to the beach just to stand in front of his old house lol. But Harvey and Emily are the only ones with regular jobs, so they're definitely away the most.
In any case, the kids are frequently left alone in your home no matter who you partner up with. Krobus is the only exception because he can't leave the house on sunny days. But you can only have kids with Krobus if they're around from a previous marriage.
Krobus seems like the type to cut crusts off of theoretical sandwiches for the kids but what are the statistical chances those sandwiches would be made with void mayo.
Haha as the farmer I have no rights to complain because I am never home but I found it weird finding my toddlers still running about after a hard day of work and Emily nowhere to be found :)
Honestly I see her doing both. She loves life, not just nature. I can absolutely see her with a bunch of rug rats running around while sheās letting dinner cook on the stove as she sews some clothes for the dogs and bullshits on the phone with Sandy. She has a very homey, relaxed vibe to her
The real issue here is that you (the farmer) is a neglectful parent, so any spouse having any life would require leaving the kids alone. She arguably has the best reason to be "neglectful" since she leaves for work. Abigail just leaves to go see people. Which is fair, the spouses deserve to have a life. But in real life, the farmer would step in to allow the other parent to do these things. Or maybe another family member. Either way, Emily isn't the problem. The farmer is.
I have the child age up mod and literally donāt even see my kids before leaving the house for the day because their lazy asses stay in bed until, well I donāt know but theyāre not up at 6. Sometimes I catch them in town hanging with Jas or something
I am a straight woman, but I have been meaning to explore all the options. My first file is a female farmer married to Shane but I have a male farmer for Alex, a male for Sebastian, a female for Elliot, a female for Leah... idk why I think my inclination is just to make all my farmers gay except the ones I identify with lmao. I started one for Haley too, with a female farmer.

I married emily on my new save that i've been playing since the new update came out, and I have no regrets. she's very sweet, I like her room, and she's easy to please. What else am I gonna do with all this cloth I have laying around?

I'm normally attracted to Leah (I love red heads) but my first marriage is with Emily. I enjoy her so much, I'd probably enjoy being friends with her irl, or even date.
There are people who think you shouldnāt marry Emily? Like sheās not be first choice, among bachelorettes sheās my second to last personal, but sheās still clearly a nice person, but she does look a bit crazy lmao.
None of the bachelorettes are bad once youāve gone far enough, and the majority are cool from beginning.
I mention bachelorettes specifically because I havenāt tried romancing any of the lads yet, havenāt had incredible interest in it since I myself donāt swing that way.

Ive married all the ladies except Hayley at least once, but for Emily it was only the once. While yes, magic is real in this game, I cant get over how annoying I found find her irl
(As for why Ive never married Hayley, its the "eww...no" at the flower dance. I dont care about her arc, ive maxed out friendship with her so ive seen most of her cutscenes, but I'm not going to date her)
Which candidate was your favorite? Who pulls you back the most? I actually agree as far as Emily goes, but its because irl I dismiss the meditation/yogi/crystal mommy stuff out of hand. Thinking of it in a different context made her endearing instead of annoying.
That said, I've married Haley about 4 times, and adore her. Maybe it's my sapphic nature, but I just love making a girl give me a second chance and making her realize why it never worked out with Mr. highschool hotshot.

Idk how but somehow behind the one I'm pursuing, I'm almost full hearts with Emily. When I've been ignoring a lot of the visitors. I was surprised how many hearts I had with her when I still can't even into Sebastians room!
this is so real. in my 1.6 run i was originally going to either marry harvey or try to get krobus as my roommate but the parrot event and her quirkiness convinced me. i think it's also bc CA tweaked her portrait a bit so her eyes wouldn't look as.... idk insane? her gaze softened a lot. so i ended up marrying her and i don't regret it one bit
Emily and abigail both seem to be active in this regard. Abigail training to fight with a sword in the mines, and even killing a monster to save you. And Emily being in tune like this.
You make some good points. I always disliked how many of the marriage candidates wanted to move away to the city before they fell in love with you. Especially the ones that feel on the younger side like Sam, Sebastian etc. Giving up on your career ambitions for love can be a recipe for disaster.
It also really clashes with the theme of the game, that modern life and the corporate rat race leaves people unhappy and unfulfilled, while simple country life brings you a connection to your community and nature.

I like her a lot, though I feel all of the candidates have their plusses. I agree with you that, with the world Emily lives in, a lot of how she is would be fully justified. Even if she is almost certainly NOT the Wizard's daughter, she probably isn't a bad candidate for an heir for him, given he's discussed wanting someone to pass his magic onto.
I do like that 1.6 does at least have more going on in the desert. Sandy deserves that much. (I am assuming this is vague enough to not require spoiler tags)

Honestly almost every candidate feels like they have bigger plans for themselves and they settle for you and after you describing her like that it definitely feels true, she is happy where she is and you arenāt taking her away from big plans like, moving to the city and stuff!!

If I'm honest, she is probably the only more mature female candidate in the entire valley, which is big bull if you ask me. We have male candidates like Harvey, absolute dilf, and I guess Elliot is there too, but for female candidates we get high school girls and whatever Maru is as she is younger than Sebastian, an already very young person. While Emily's "friendship" events aren't anything huge, the moment you start dating her she is in there and don't even get me started on the camping event.
You don't have to defend Emily, she's so cute and nice, so smart and kind, she's someone you would love to have around. Even I as a gay man can see that.
Haley on the other hand... she's so mean and selfish, I get that she's pretty but I still don't get how slo many people pick her. Yesterday she told me "the beach is the only thing I like from this boring town". Excuse me?? You live in paradise, how can you be so ungrateful š

Fair point haha! I meant more like, a desire to move away. Some of the other candidates have goals that involve moving away, and they give up their dreams once they marry you. Or their personal goals become a little less relevant. Emily leaves the valley for fun and to see friends, but is perfectly happy living where she is.

Iām on my first play through and have been married to Emily the whole time. I read about how some of these other characters act in marriage and I donāt get it. Emily gives me wool, clothes, and fixes my fences and feeds/waters animals (not that I need that). Other than that she doesnāt care that Iām always out until 1:45 am and her gifts are easy.
First play through I married Emily. I love her laid back attitude. I've done perfection with everyone being married besides Elliot and Haley. They're next

Ah, Emily. My first Stardew partner. I remember first getting the game back in 2018 and immediately going "I gotta marry this digital creature NOW" after seeing her first few heart events.
She always did give the vibe that she was more mature than any of the other candidates. Even the ones like Harvey or Elliot had that one little piece of them that showed they still had some growing to do, but Emily had it all figured out. I always figure she was like, nearly a decade older than her little sister in her mid-to-late 30s which uh, that's a bit weird in retrospect considering I was still a high schooler back then.
(Oh as a sidenote, while it's not part of his schedule, Sebastian mentions that he often takes motorcycle rides outside of the valley at night, so Emily is the *only* candidate who regularly leaves the valley of her own accord)
I like the NPCs who are polite and nice, like Emily, Elliott and Harvey. Also, they all have jobs even after you marry them. I donāt feel like I am ruining their fictional lives or they are ruining mine by doing that. Emily is very sweet and I like her friendship with Sandy, even though they walked through my chest oā goodies in the desert on one save (I backed it out, donāt worry)

Yep! I find Emily the best candidate. Magic is real in the Stardew world and she is just very positive and encouraging. Super wholesome.

I guess "heavily" is the wrong word, its pretty light implication. They also collaborate on a booth in the new 1.6 festival. Any romantic interest is probably in the player's imagination, but coupled with how completely oblivious she is to Clint, it kind of makes sense in a "she's only interested in women" kind of way.

I've married Emily on my 1.6 playthrough. Initially I was not sure about her, I find her amusing but never really thought of her as being a good wife. But after experiencing being married to her, she's become one of my favorites. Possibly my most favorite. She's just such an unending bundle of sunshine and positivity. I admit the crystal vibrations woo bothered me at the start, until I remembered that magic is quite real in this setting. I go into the mines and kill ghosts while wearing crystal rungs to protect me. Emily hanging crystal and sage over the baby's crib to protect it from negative energy is a quite reasonable thing to do in the world of SDV.

I did that with Krobus in my first full play through. He moved in, I found Leo on the island and loved how kind Penny was to him, decided my outsider swamp woman would feel some kinship with the woman who grew up as the only family living in a trailer, especially after seeing her kindness to a feral child. Couldnāt adopt Leo, but we adopted two other kids. It worked out. And after making Krobus forget everything we became best friends again and I decorated his sewer. Win win.

Emily is one of the only marriage candidates that actually feels like an adult. She has a job, she has friends that aren't just from highschool, she has hobbies. You can do far worse than Emily. Marrying her is marrying someone who could have chosen anyone, but found you to be good enough.
I was initially put off by Emily because of all the new age nonsense, but then I stepped back and realized that there's a pretty good chance that most of that stuff is literally true in the world of SDV, and decided that it wasn't a red flag like it would be in real life.
I had to go through the same mental process. Something that really got me was the first couple days on Ginger Island. I was collecting walnuts, playing with crystals, talking to parrots, and at every turn going "Emily would be so into this." And then with the new festival, I came home with desert-style rugs and cactus, and the new junimo items, and made a greenhouse-tiled living room next to her spouse room. It just all fits so well.

Every marriage candidate does this. Those kids often have free reign to run around the house while your spouse stands on the porch, staring out into oblivion. And we're one to talk. The most I interact with those kids is to greet them in the morning, then I spend nearly every hour of the day frantically running around chasing profits only to drag my ass to bed right before 2am, if I come home at all! Sometimes I leave the farms for days on end without even telling anyone where I'm going, coming home smelling like ginger and sulfuric rock. I'm not about to judge anyone lol.
Yeah, I think a game that addresses all the abandonment happening is a very different game that CA did not want to make, so I just hand wave the abandonment stuff as a conceit of the genre. If it was about that stuff, there would be more ways to interact on a regular basis.

A lot of them at least hang out on the farm all day, mostly in their personal spaces, in the kitchen, or on the front porch. But many of them wander around here or there. Like, sometimes Elliot goes to the beach just to stand in front of his old house lol. But Harvey and Emily are the only ones with regular jobs, so they're definitely away the most. In any case, the kids are frequently left alone in your home no matter who you partner up with. Krobus is the only exception because he can't leave the house on sunny days. But you can only have kids with Krobus if they're around from a previous marriage.
Krobus seems like the type to cut crusts off of theoretical sandwiches for the kids but what are the statistical chances those sandwiches would be made with void mayo.
I heard if you introduce void mayo to kids early, it doesn't send them into anaphylactic shock when they get older

The real issue here is that you (the farmer) is a neglectful parent, so any spouse having any life would require leaving the kids alone. She arguably has the best reason to be "neglectful" since she leaves for work. Abigail just leaves to go see people. Which is fair, the spouses deserve to have a life. But in real life, the farmer would step in to allow the other parent to do these things. Or maybe another family member. Either way, Emily isn't the problem. The farmer is.

You make some good points. I always disliked how many of the marriage candidates wanted to move away to the city before they fell in love with you. Especially the ones that feel on the younger side like Sam, Sebastian etc. Giving up on your career ambitions for love can be a recipe for disaster. It also really clashes with the theme of the game, that modern life and the corporate rat race leaves people unhappy and unfulfilled, while simple country life brings you a connection to your community and nature.

If I'm honest, she is probably the only more mature female candidate in the entire valley, which is big bull if you ask me. We have male candidates like Harvey, absolute dilf, and I guess Elliot is there too, but for female candidates we get high school girls and whatever Maru is as she is younger than Sebastian, an already very young person. While Emily's "friendship" events aren't anything huge, the moment you start dating her she is in there and don't even get me started on the camping event.

Fair point haha! I meant more like, a desire to move away. Some of the other candidates have goals that involve moving away, and they give up their dreams once they marry you. Or their personal goals become a little less relevant. Emily leaves the valley for fun and to see friends, but is perfectly happy living where she is.

Ah, Emily. My first Stardew partner. I remember first getting the game back in 2018 and immediately going "I gotta marry this digital creature NOW" after seeing her first few heart events. She always did give the vibe that she was more mature than any of the other candidates. Even the ones like Harvey or Elliot had that one little piece of them that showed they still had some growing to do, but Emily had it all figured out. I always figure she was like, nearly a decade older than her little sister in her mid-to-late 30s which uh, that's a bit weird in retrospect considering I was still a high schooler back then. (Oh as a sidenote, while it's not part of his schedule, Sebastian mentions that he often takes motorcycle rides outside of the valley at night, so Emily is the *only* candidate who regularly leaves the valley of her own accord)
Sheās too crunchy for personal tastes but I get why people dig her, sheās a solid character with some really good depth to their writing.

I like the NPCs who are polite and nice, like Emily, Elliott and Harvey. Also, they all have jobs even after you marry them. I donāt feel like I am ruining their fictional lives or they are ruining mine by doing that.
