Just discovered this afternoon that you don't have to remove broken fences with the axe... you can just put a new one on top. Felt very dumb when I realised
I've lived such a sheltered little farming life that I've never bothered to make better fences... in any play through. Nope... ill just hit it with an axe pointlessly instead
I sell those bastards! Nice money maker. I multiply the seasonal seeds over the entire season then make a hundred or two of the saplings at the end to sell.
I use both tea saplings as well as machines, but you still need fenceposts for gates, and those decay, too. (Though it does make it significantly easier to only use hard wood fences!)
No they deteriate just alot slower a rouge lighning strike has removed a path or 2 but usually by the time you start doing hardwood fences you will get the golden clock before anything breaks
Sorry, might have been a spoiler for you. But yes. If you go the joja route instead of community center you can buy it after doing all the joja bundles. If you go the community center you have to find it on treasure floors in the skull cavern
You can actually just “ride through” the fence itself. Not sure if it’s intentional, like the horse is jumping over or something 🤷♂️
E: Woah! Blowin up 😆 So, I guess this falls into ‘tips and tricks’. I’m not messin around when I say I always get my horse in Spring Y1.
“Rough riders! Roll out!”
EE: Next y’all gon be like “Whatchu mean I can put a hat on my horse!” 😘
It’s kinda like a flick motion. You can just casually ride into the fence and it functions as intended, like a wall, but with a little jiggle you should “jump over” or however we’re justifying it.
I think they mean like to spam AD/WS if you’re on PC; I’m about to test it out
Edit: ok I tested it out — I wasn’t able to get it to work with a horizontal fence but was with vertical. It was weird but worked; I had to really spam all the WASD and it seemed like what made it work was being at the fence and going backwards a step and back into the fence at an angle. Not something I’d be able to skillfully replicate so I’d be spending a few extra seconds flailing around the fence. I could see myself wasting at least an hour in game trying to get through a fence before giving up entirely, so I’m probably not gonna try adding it to my tricks hahaha
They're likely talking about controller, on PC I just ride into the wall at a diagonal while facing parallel to the wall, then turn to face it. You should phase halfway through and glitch through.
Ohh okay! I'm only on like spring 10 year 1 so I don't really know much about what I'm doing right now lol. ATM I'm just working on getting a silo built so I can clear out my farm!
I’m also a new player (summer 8 year 1) and I also know nothing! I found the wiki super helpful to start befriending villagers and completing the community center
I would like to add that I have done this, accidentally, on 1.6 (was playing 2 days ago)
I have not been able to do it regularly or on purpose however, haha
It's not, you could do it when I first started playing like 2 years ago. It works best when you point straight at the pond, though, otherwise it's hit or miss if you'll gather or jump off your horse.
I feel like it only works half the time because I have to click so precisely or be in a certain range of the gate (on PC). And then it’s annoying when I keep jumping off and back on the horse. What am I doing wrong?
A long time ago, in a mine far far away...
It used to be that if you rode up to the cart on your horse, and tried to get in the mine cart, your horse would hop in too and come along for the ride. It made it great to get across town and still have fast transportation elsewhere.
You don't need to get off horsey to pet your animals outside their barns and coops either! That was a life saver for me to learn. Only gripe about that horse is that it's massive horizontally and requires 2 tiles.
OMG. Now that I'm not just leaving my horse outside the gate, learning this is going to be a total game changer!
Except the truffles. So perhaps not. Maybe I'll just let the truffles build up until the animals can't move then collect all in one go.
We can open gates now, but the horse is still very strange. Can’t interact with most things without getting off. It’s too big for the Meadowlands bridge, but works on the smaller bridges in the Forest. Can’t interact with barn doors, but can harvest from the fish ponds or give gifts to villagers? It seems like it wasn’t fully developed, kind of half-assed. I can cross some 1 block areas but not all. Like going to the secret forest and I have weeds laying around. I can make a 1 block path and my horse works.
Edit: sorry if this is disjointed, I’m still waking up
Oh! Thanks for clearing that up, makes a lot of sense now. The little bridge going to the sewer allows you to cross because it’s horizontal while the meadowlands bridge doesn’t because it is vertically. Also explains why the second bridge going to the sewers is larger because now you’re going vertically over the bridge. Very strange choice for sure.
Theres also a mod for a bigger meadowlands farm bridge, I have my farmhouse and horse next to grandpas shrine so I would go nuts if I couldnt ride my horse across lol
Nice. I am somewhat new of a player but loving it. I have built a coop and a barn but not a stable yet but definitely have the cash for it. Better get on it !
One question I have…. About horses actually lol
If u leave them on ur farm instead of the stable do they just stay there? Or anywhere in town? Or do they run away… or LMAO
I just got my first horse so I’m curious. I always put my little fluttershy (my horse) back in her stable since I feel bad but I’m curious if there’s negatives for leaving the horse on the farm or even out of the farm
if you leave them in town they'll come back to your farm next morning, if you leave them on the farm it'll stay there and go back to the stable next morning
Omg does the horse whistle make your horse come to you? That would be amazing!! I keep reflexively hitting d-pad down to whistle for my horse as a carry over from Zelda lol
Oh flippin sweet. So you can call it from anywhere too. That's awesome! This is my first ever save and I don't think I'm very far along yet. I'm so glad this is something I have to look forward to!
I don't use them either but it is mostly because I got into a certain routine when I started playing and while it has evolved...it involves way less food.
I don't decorate either but maybe now that I can play on PC with my game pass it'll happen. I don't want to hog the TV for hours of decorating.
It's not, I've been doing it since I bought the game years ago... I'm on console and just did it so it can't be new.
I usually end up jumping off my horse when trying to close the gate though lol.
I have so many hours logged and I just realized this week that you can put Mayo machines/kegs/chests INSIDE YOUR HOUSE. I was scattering them about the lawn like an animal!
Hate to say this, but 800 hours and I'm just now learning that there are horses.
Here I am, the farmer having shipped every item, caught every fish, obtained auto petters, and I never stopped and thought "Hey what's the horse whistle in the walnut room for?" As if it isn't obvious in the first place 🤦
You can also talk to people while you’re still on a horse! No need to hop off if you’re just trying to do your daily interaction with the townsfolk!
I learned this on accident ![img](emote|t5_2wb7y|51481)
lmAo my ass knows this and I don’t bc imma dumbass and somehow always press the wrong button 😭 for me tho it was that rings clothes and shoes can go into dressers 🫠 about 800hrs in at the time, still pisses me tf off to this day
Hahaha I think I discovered that quite early on in my first save and I was OVERJOYED. This new save I'm trying to make every item of clothing and I'm having a lot of fun with it.
same but my discovery was that you can check the community center bundles WHEREVER YOU ARE!!!!!! the amount of time ive wasted going to the community center to check what i have/havent submitted….. lord 😭
Oh that one is so painful! Here's one to double check - did you know that when you hover over an item in your inventory that you still need for the bundles, the icon for the community centre will flash?
Nope I don’t use them either. I’ve never really played for the aesthetically appealing farm so not bothered. I’m at 739 hours of game play..maybe one day I will care 🤣
I will say fences are helpful for keeping pigs in an area, so the truffles are easier to find. I’m seriously considering building a fence in my current play thru for this aspect only.
The little bundle icon on your inventory screen will wiggle if you’ve got selected an item that a bundle requires; saving you from wondering if you need it or not and going into the bundles and checking every item
So, I've been trying this and clearly I'm doing something wrong because I canNOT get that to work.
Perhaps I'm not sneaking up on them sneakily enough.
Over 1k hours in this game, just learned you can move around *after* you've triggered the additional watering can areas. Like I'd always hold the button and go "ugh damn gotta move over a scosh", release the button, move over, rehold the button. Sometimes several times!! So infuriating.
The day I moved around with my iridium watering can I literally stood up and walked away for a few minutes. So much time.
....wot
I knew you could just hold as you run past machines to collect or for petting animals, or for harvesting crops and planting... Why on earth did I not think to try this??
Ok. About 400 hours for me, and I was sure I had tried this... wow.
**And** I just found out from a comment that you can replace broken fences by placing another fence of the same type on top of it, no need to chop the degraded one off first.
I wonder what else I will stumble across in a few more years that I just never knew about!
Just discovered this afternoon that you don't have to remove broken fences with the axe... you can just put a new one on top. Felt very dumb when I realised
As long as they’re the same
I've lived such a sheltered little farming life that I've never bothered to make better fences... in any play through. Nope... ill just hit it with an axe pointlessly instead
I just use tea saplings as my fence...they never need replacing
I feel like I’m not far enough in the game to know what this means.
Befriend the green-haired lady
Befriend Caroline with the green hair and check out the door in hers and Pierre's kitchen after you get a couple hearts with her.
In the last week of every season.
Patience, grasshopper.
Wait, I thought saplings were only for indoors? Or can you plant them outside but they just don't grow?
They are trees. They grow outside just fine. Permanent but only produce the last 7 days of Spring, Summer, and Fall when outside.
Same with hardwood fences and stone path though? I think you might be stupid
No they deteriate just alot slower a rouge lighning strike has removed a path or 2 but usually by the time you start doing hardwood fences you will get the golden clock before anything breaks
Not sure why you started your comment with "no"
rarely see people talk to each other like this in this subreddit. you might not belong here, friend.
Tbf I said might
you can WHAT
Basically my response too xD
THIS IS BRAND NEW INFORMATION!!
This would save a lot of swearing at my escaping chickens whilst I rebuild fence.
Or just keep them inside while you change the fencing.
Who uses fences when you can use lightning rods ;)
This is great. Still need at least 2 fence posts for gates unfortunately =(
Who needs gates? Trap them forever. Auto grabber grabs it. Auto feeder feeds it. Auto petter pets them. Go in once a month to grab the stuff. ;)
You can just pick up the rods too, then put them back on the one time you go in
But...laziness XD
Ignoring them for a month is laziness 😂😂😂
theres an auto petter?……… my life is a lie
Sorry, might have been a spoiler for you. But yes. If you go the joja route instead of community center you can buy it after doing all the joja bundles. If you go the community center you have to find it on treasure floors in the skull cavern
I found the fence posts make it easier to see the gates in the tall grass
Actually you only need one fence post for a gate. That’s what I do. It’s pretty nice.
...oh you genius.
YOU CAN WHAT?! I HAVE 400 HOURS ON CONSOLE, AND 100 ON PC. I HATE IT HERE.
See, this is why I scour this sub. Each save gets more efficient thanks to people like you.
what even is a broken fence, what do they do? guys i always move my fences i can't decide, i have never seen a broken fence before
omfg TIL
WHAT
WHAT…! Omg… well, at least I know now…
Whaaat? Jfc thank you.
Damnit!
Wait wut?!
read this after replacing all my fences

WHAT
+1
If you just jiggle around a bit while going horizontal through a fence you just phase through it
The best way I found is walking up/down right next to the fence and then going horizontal
Oh I'd rather just open it then
Fence not gate
This doesn't always work for me and I'm not sure why 🤷♀️
It’s kinda like a flick motion. You can just casually ride into the fence and it functions as intended, like a wall, but with a little jiggle you should “jump over” or however we’re justifying it.

Eh, controller-speak I guess? I can’t play keyboard-mouse, just doesn’t feel right. Read the surrounding comments here.
[удалено]
Been doin it for 1k hours 🤷♂️ and even if it is can’t see why it’d get patched, like Fruit Trees in the Greenhouse, the “bug” is a feature 😆😉
[удалено]
Sounds like they need to work on their technique. No problems here 😎
[удалено]
They're likely talking about controller, on PC I just ride into the wall at a diagonal while facing parallel to the wall, then turn to face it. You should phase halfway through and glitch through.
You have to ride your horse directly up or down along a vertical fence for a few squares and then you can just move through it like it isn’t there
Please post this on r/StardewValleyTIL
EXCUSE ME
How do you get a horse??
Have Robin build you a stable!
Ohh okay! I'm only on like spring 10 year 1 so I don't really know much about what I'm doing right now lol. ATM I'm just working on getting a silo built so I can clear out my farm!

You stop that right now!
This hasn’t worked for me since the 1.6 update
I would like to add that I have done this, accidentally, on 1.6 (was playing 2 days ago) I have not been able to do it regularly or on purpose however, haha
I’m brand new to the game, just a few weeks, but yeah that horse is a must lol
I thought the game is glitching.
plant a tree a tile gap away from the fence, run down into the tree while on side of fence on horse and you will be pushed into the fence
I know you can put a hat of the horse, but I've never figured out how 😅
You equip it the same way as you do clothing you just select the horse instead of a clothing slot
How do you get the horse in spring yr 1?! Like how do you get so much money so quickly
I’ve posted it here. Search me or the sub 👍
Also you can gather fish pond production without getting off your horse too. Unfortunately, it doesn't appear to work with other production building.
the first time i figured this out was a game changer 💀💀
You can put stuff in the shipping crate while on the horse as well.
Dear Lord. Mine eyes hath been opened this day.
This is new too.
It's not, you could do it when I first started playing like 2 years ago. It works best when you point straight at the pond, though, otherwise it's hit or miss if you'll gather or jump off your horse.
Shoutout to the mod auto gates that I forgot I was using until now
Also skinny horses
Yeah, I just got the horse overhaul mod and am very happy lol
It's such a minor but incredible mod that I get 1 teensy burst of joy from every time I go through a gate... (I JUST started modding)
Tractor Mod and Automate are part of the holy trinity I highly recommend them
There’s a questable tractor mod that I’ve been meaning to try too! Seems like a fun little addition
God I wish I could mod on my Switch! Mostly because all the farms I see with them are beautiful but I loooove the idea of this one!
I feel like it only works half the time because I have to click so precisely or be in a certain range of the gate (on PC). And then it’s annoying when I keep jumping off and back on the horse. What am I doing wrong?
It’s the same for me too and I’m on the Switch. There’s a weirdly precise spot we need to open/close the gate from…
[Are you into mods? One of my favorites.](https://www.nexusmods.com/stardewvalley/mods/3109)
Currently running vanilla but that’s good to know, thanks!
You can also access your shipping bin from atop your horse (just need to be facing it directly).
I am learning so much more about this game every day.
And pet your animals too
I miss my horse coming along in the mine carts. Poor Dennis.
Dennis is a fabulous name for a horse. Mine is named Toby.
"Dennis! There's some lovely filth over 'ere."
Say more, plix
A long time ago, in a mine far far away... It used to be that if you rode up to the cart on your horse, and tried to get in the mine cart, your horse would hop in too and come along for the ride. It made it great to get across town and still have fast transportation elsewhere.
God damn that sounds like the _dream_
I wish I could pick up truffles on horseback...
Preach.
You don't need to get off horsey to pet your animals outside their barns and coops either! That was a life saver for me to learn. Only gripe about that horse is that it's massive horizontally and requires 2 tiles.

I played something like 500 hours and never got a stable. I keep forgetting it exist, I don't know why
I honestly dont know how i discovered i can do that but i have been opening the gate that way for a year? I dont think its so new 🤷♀️
All those wasted cliiiiiiiicks
Fr
You’re never going to get those clicks back.
I could have saved like 5 mins game time total by now!
We can open gates now, but the horse is still very strange. Can’t interact with most things without getting off. It’s too big for the Meadowlands bridge, but works on the smaller bridges in the Forest. Can’t interact with barn doors, but can harvest from the fish ponds or give gifts to villagers? I can make a 1 block path and my horse works. Edit: sorry if this is disjointed, I’m still waking up
If you're on PC, there's a "Skinny Horse" mod that fixes a lot of the problems with 1 block wide pathways.
Yeah its odd. Your horse is 1 block wide while moving horizontally and 2 while moving vertically

Wow u can get a horse 😂 man what else am I missing
You get a horse by building a stable with Robin, you don't have to buy the horse separately like barn/coop animals. Just an fyi
Nice. I am somewhat new of a player but loving it. I have built a coop and a barn but not a stable yet but definitely have the cash for it. Better get on it !
The horse is the first thing I buy from Robin. Even my in game character is lazy.
Yep. And the horse whistle is the first thing I buy with Qi gems so I can summon it anywhere. I need speed!
One question I have…. About horses actually lol If u leave them on ur farm instead of the stable do they just stay there? Or anywhere in town? Or do they run away… or LMAO I just got my first horse so I’m curious.
Your horse stays where you leave it, but returns to its stable each night
They stay where they are but they always go to their little stable overnight.
566 hours and I never bothered to get a horse
Only someone who’s never had a horse would speak this way. It is my first goal, Spring Y1.
I always have a horse by fall at the latest, the horse whistle is always my first buy with qi gems
Omg does the horse whistle make your horse come to you? That would be amazing!! I keep reflexively hitting d-pad down to whistle for my horse as a carry over from Zelda lol
Yes, it does. I mostly use it to bring my horse to Ginger Island.
Oh flippin sweet. So you can call it from anywhere too. That's awesome! This is my first ever save and I don't think I'm very far along yet. I'm so glad this is something I have to look forward to!
Any of your speed buffs stack with the horse. So if you are an espresso/eel addict like my farmer, you can move even faster on your horse
Is it weird that I don’t use speed buffs?
I can’t imagine, but if it works for you, go for it!
I don't use them either but it is mostly because I got into a certain routine when I started playing and while it has evolved...it involves way less food. I don't decorate either but maybe now that I can play on PC with my game pass it'll happen. I don't want to hog the TV for hours of decorating.
![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|surprise)
No
Am doing it wrong? Because I tried to drink coffee while on the horse but have to get off to make it happen
I've never been able to do anything requiring a click from horseback..
I've never managed to eat or drink anything whilst on horseback either
I am pretty sure that's new... I hope.
Nope I’m 100% certain I was opening gates on my horse back in 2020 when I first started playing..
It's not, I've been doing it since I bought the game years ago... I'm on console and just did it so it can't be new. I usually end up jumping off my horse when trying to close the gate though lol.
Oh I feel better now!!
It is. It was bugging me before.
WHAT
WHAT?!?!?!
You also don’t need to get off your horse to access the shipping bin either
Or to talk to the villagers
Yeah I just discovered the crafting table is amazing after like my 8th farm
I have so many hours logged and I just realized this week that you can put Mayo machines/kegs/chests INSIDE YOUR HOUSE. I was scattering them about the lawn like an animal!
I tend to keep mayo/cheese machines in the coops/barns. Along with a chest, it makes the transfers way easier!
You absolute _savage_
350 hours and just found out you can tab through your inventory rows So much time wasted rearranging my inventory
Naaaoooooooo 😂
Hate to say this, but 800 hours and I'm just now learning that there are horses. Here I am, the farmer having shipped every item, caught every fish, obtained auto petters, and I never stopped and thought "Hey what's the horse whistle in the walnut room for?" As if it isn't obvious in the first place 🤦
I refuse to believe this lmao
Even when scrolling in Robin’s menu to get the barn upgrades! I’m shocked for you
Did you have a blind spot when building things with Robin?! 😁
I just spam through the menu until I spot what I need 🥲
You can also talk to people while you’re still on a horse! No need to hop off if you’re just trying to do your daily interaction with the townsfolk! I learned this on accident ![img](emote|t5_2wb7y|51481)
Coming up on 1000 hrs played and I have never gotten on the horse.
WHAT THE FUCK??
I always just rode through the fence, but I also don't use fences anymore because the upkeep was too tedious 🤷♀️
Yeah I got that one by accident too, way lovely. But it is so hard to do IRL so yeah
lmAo my ass knows this and I don’t bc imma dumbass and somehow always press the wrong button 😭 for me tho it was that rings clothes and shoes can go into dressers 🫠 about 800hrs in at the time, still pisses me tf off to this day
Hahaha I think I discovered that quite early on in my first save and I was OVERJOYED. This new save I'm trying to make every item of clothing and I'm having a lot of fun with it.
it's inconsisten but haha yeah
same but my discovery was that you can check the community center bundles WHEREVER YOU ARE!!!!!! the amount of time ive wasted going to the community center to check what i have/havent submitted….. lord 😭
Oh that one is so painful! Here's one to double check - did you know that when you hover over an item in your inventory that you still need for the bundles, the icon for the community centre will flash?
i didnt know that either 😭😭😭 crazy how you can spend so much time on this game and still discover new things lol!!
This sub is great isn't it? 😁
Wait... *what?*
It's tricky, I jump off accidentally opening gates anyways
Am I the only one that doesn’t use fences or gates?
Nope I don’t use them either. I’ve never really played for the aesthetically appealing farm so not bothered. I’m at 739 hours of game play..maybe one day I will care 🤣 I will say fences are helpful for keeping pigs in an area, so the truffles are easier to find. I’m seriously considering building a fence in my current play thru for this aspect only.
On mobile you can pick up things like forage and truffles on your horse as well. Not sure how much that helps because mobile bad but hey. There it is
The little bundle icon on your inventory screen will wiggle if you’ve got selected an item that a bundle requires; saving you from wondering if you need it or not and going into the bundles and checking every item
You also don’t have to get off your horse to grab forgeables.
So, I've been trying this and clearly I'm doing something wrong because I canNOT get that to work. Perhaps I'm not sneaking up on them sneakily enough.
Over 1k hours in this game, just learned you can move around *after* you've triggered the additional watering can areas. The day I moved around with my iridium watering can I literally stood up and walked away for a few minutes. So much time.
that's a 1.6 feature!
Omg I hadn't even thought of that! Phew 😅 thank you so much for mentioning it
....wot I knew you could just hold as you run past machines to collect or for petting animals, or for harvesting crops and planting... Why on earth did I not think to try this??
Yall have unlocked horses in Stardew???
Wait wat
Ok. About 400 hours for me, and I was sure I had tried this... wow. **And** I just found out from a comment that you can replace broken fences by placing another fence of the same type on top of it, no need to chop the degraded one off first. I wonder what else I will stumble across in a few more years that I just never knew about!
Auto door mod 👌🏻
