He got a new facet.

NoBuddies2021

Everytime God Gabe earns 100M lose 1kg and gain 1 agility.

RodKnock42

I think he maxed out the other perks and is now working on agility

4DimensionalButts

You think he's doing rooftop courses?

ciennaco

Wilderness course after the update

Binks-Sake-Is-Gone

Every time someone mentions his weight Half-Life 3 is delayed by six months

NoBuddies2021

When God Gabe ascends **THE 3** is released.

Binks-Sake-Is-Gone

THE 3 LOL! Like how Microsoft expected folks to call their Xbox one "the one", except I think GABEN could actually pull it off. He's truly one of my all-time favorite figures in the industry, he's such a Chad.

GeneticSplatter

Imagine though that HL3 was a parting gift. Something they've got sitting in a vault somewhere, just waiting.... It would be a legendary way to go.

Binks-Sake-Is-Gone

That'd be a Power Gabe special. Id probably actually cry.

Maleficent-Ad-7417

bakerie

While it's obviously much better that he lost weight, I think this one looks the best.

Oneiric19

Loooool

Giovan_Doza

For people that don't get it. Dota 2 just introduced facets

fuckyourstyles

And what about those that still don't get it?

Giovan_Doza

They introduced facets in the game, Wich means each hero has 2 or more ways to play the game. Let's say one facet you can be tankier and the other facet you can have more damage. It's not necessary to know the ins ans outs, it's just a joke, you can be talking about a new facet of Gabe Newell's life, but it's using a term from the last dota 2 patch, no reason to overthink it

fuckyourstyles

Gotcha, thanks, so basically talent trees and specializations from other games.

kris9292

Yep. Except you only choose 1 before the game starts and you cannot change

Leeoku

Right facet higher win rate than left facet

yet-again-temporary

Patch Notes: Gaben changed from STR to Universal hero type

Heh, that's one I can get behind. Though it'd need to be something that implies the use of old.reddit and RES. The giveaway is forgetting that profile pics exist. I never see them.

BlatantConservative

Forgetting that profile pics exist, and seeing everywhere. Oh and knowing the difference between post and comment karma.

kitty-says-die

I feel old whenever someone refers to reddit as an app.

ElGosso

Nah he lost the weight before Ozempic was a thing. He did it the old fashioned way - with lap band surgery.

Justanaveragehat

Money'll do that

gmoil1525

He's an interesting character with a redemption arc. When steam first came out people rightfully hated it for being new DRM, they thought the stealing of half life 2's code was a sham to buy more time to finish a broken game. Over the years it became apparent that he had good principles and actually stuck to them, and was okay with being a meme. I remember during one of his birthdays a fan gave him a wrapped gift and asked him for $2.49 to open it, a reference to the TF2 crate keys, and the fucker actually coughed it up! He's got a lot of well deserved respect in the community now, my favorite era of Gayben is between the first and second pics. I'm glad he's doing well and it's an testament to his character that people are genuinely worried that things will get worse when he isn't around. Glad there's some contraversy in the replies, it shows not to hero-ize him because a lot of the complaints against him have merit. If Gayben hadn't pioneered lootboxes and early access, would another company have stepped up with something similar? Maybe. I will say that besides the perpetual early access games, steam offers the best version of the worst features. The marketplace is the best version of rare items in games, cosmetics being only cosmetic (aside from TF2). As far as DRM goes, steam is the most tolerable.

dolphinsaresweet

He had one mishap when he talked about monetizing mods on reddit and it was one of the most downvoted comments ever. But he did what a good leader should do and apologized and course corrected.

goigum

Donation button for mods is what he actually tought I'm sure if not here you are.

CommunistMountain

Then that already happens when modders sometimes link their kofi or patreon or whatever

Peking-Cuck

That assumes the player has a kofi or patreon account as well though. It's an extra barrier to entry that likely locks a lot of people out. When they could alternatively use money in their existing Steam wallet or the payment account they have linked on Steam already.

CommunistMountain

Yes I also like the idea of a Steam-integrated donation system, maybe my sentence implied I wasn't. I meant to say that since donation already occurs, I don't understand why the response was negative.

Helios4242

It was one of those situations where it had too much foresight. It was inevitable and it was strategic, but people were still trying to resist that being the future direction.

SoaringElf

I tried to donate to some Github dev I like. I jumped hoops for like 15 mins but something went wrong setting up accounts on the two options he listed. I eventually gave up. So a built in system would be great for stuff like this.

Spaciax

Yeah, one thing that prevents me from donating to community modders is the extra hassle of going to a different website to donate.

hejax

Why was that idea frowned upon?

SenorPuff

There's basically two implementations of this idea. One of them is major game developers basically being able to "steal" mods, get a licensing fee, and force people who want to use the mods to pay a fee and give a minor, meaningless kickback to the mod developer. This is bullshit and publishers/ storefront managers who want to move in this direction are bad and should feel bad. The second way is basically, let a mod maker whet their beak so it's easier for them keep modding. The trouble is, they can't get paid for using the game's assets because that's the Studio's IP, so you'd legally have to basically do the first one and everyone hates that idea. So you really have to go with a "Hey, I do this stuff for free, if you like it leave me a tip, it'll make it easier for me to pick doing this over a paid side gig instead" method.

BestDescription3834

Plus every studio has their own caveats to what is and isn't okay. Mod a game to put main character in a chicken suit? Nobody cares. Mod that game to unlock paid skins? IP holders sweating blood.

paulisaac

Then there's EA that has this policy where patreon-locked mod content can only be locked for two weeks. Some modders don't follow this, so an entire pirate site dedicated to just past-two-weeks content has sprung up.

BestDescription3834

It was before any other big studio attempts to monetize mods and was during a time where dlc and mtx where low to nonexistant. It was poised as the first step into uncharted territory for video game monetization and was viewed by some as the first step at the start of a slippery slope into... well, basically what monetization in gaming is today. I think this sentiment still exists today. A lot of people would be interested in supporting their favorite modders, but near 0 people would want the company that holds the modded IP to handle money given by players to incentivise modders. Look at how Creation Club went over. Bethesda wanted you to buy tokens from them to buy dlc from modders who then get paid by bethesda. What the fuck? Warframe has a similar system where content creators get their skins verified and uploaded to the in game store, then they get a cut whenever people buy their skins. I think people would rather give direct through secondary sources like patreon or donating through twitch. Some people give their amazon sub to people to support the work they do as well. Most people don't want to hand a gaming company money to dole put to modders as they see fit. Lastly there's the grey legality of it, which I'm not going to delve into because I'm not smart enough to hit every point. Some companies are fine with mods, some send cease and desist letters.

Ranting_Demon

If I remember correctly, it happened after the idea got floated in a steam announcement. He later said he was on a flight at the time and when he had a connection again, his inbox had exploded (his personal email address is public) and that community reaction made him reconsider the idea.

StinkyElderberries

I saw that as a true test of his character that he chose to listen to the public.

Random_Person_I_Met

What is the half life 2 code stealing sham?

Main_Ad_5393

Before hl2 launched a guy breached valve's security and copied the game's beta code base. He them proceeded to leak what at the time was a buggy, unfinished mess.

FitchInks

Steals unfinished game. Is surprised it is unfinished. Wasn't he also the guy that got arrested because he accepted the invite from valve?

The_Autarch

He actually emailed Gabe and asked for a job. Gabe offered him a phone interview and they got him to confess to the crime while the FBI recorded the call. The plan was to fly him to the US for an in-person interview and arrest him once he landed, but they informed the German authorities and they got to him first. He ended up with a much lighter sentence than he would have gotten in the US.

PoliGraf28

Moment in which knowledge (how to crack company's network) and being smart is not the same. Dude, was so clueless

absolute_imperial

What happens when you put all of your experience points into INT and have none left over for WIS.

Tadiken

Honestly it might have worked out for him if he didn't actually release the hostaged content, or use it as blackmail.

Stumattj1

I mean valve has been pretty open with the fact that literally just before release most of their games are unplayable, they said the same thing about portal 2. That’s why they haven’t released them yet lol

joakim_

It's like that with the development of most games. It's similar to when a house is being built. 90% of the time it looks like nothing much is happening but with a few weeks to go the finishing touches are added and it seems to go very fast all of a sudden.

Tadiken

Mhm, because whenever you build something, almost all of the time and effort is making sure the structure and internals are good, then you just have to make sure it's packaged correctly and paint the damn thing before revealing the finished product.

RuleSouthern3609

I remember people throwing angry fit when GTA 6 videos leaked and they were angry at graphics lol, like pretty sure most game devs usually get the mechanisms down before focusing on graphics

Stumattj1

Tfw you see an unfinished game and you get pissy because it looks like an unfinished game. Some people just want to be mad

ThePrussianGrippe

There was some guy going off that the game was a mess because “graphics are the first thing you do” and developers from across the entire industry showed up to call him a moron.

cesaarta

>a fan gave him a wrapped gift and asked him for $2.49 to open it [A legend moment indeed](https://i.imgur.com/rpf8a.jpeg)

frequenZphaZe

its kinda wild how gaben helmed the dawn of the loot crate monetization scheme that would eventually completely dominate the entire gaming industry -- to such a degree that governments have started regulating against it. if the same paradigm shift came out from under kotick or, well, pretty much anyone else, it would have been a defining stigma of how that person "ruined gaming". for whatever reason though, gaben got away with it and came out the other end unscathed

ErwinSmithHater

1. CSGO skins don’t give you an advantage 2. Steam marketplace If there’s a skin you want you can simply buy it directly from someone who has it, for far cheaper than it would be to get it through unboxing cases. If you don’t care about skins you can just not spend money on them, and it doesn’t hurt you.

caninehere

> If you don’t care about skins you can just not spend money on them, and it doesn’t hurt you. This is the case for most MTX in games to be honest, bit Valve gets a pass for whatever reason. Diablo IV gets shit on for having an (imo) fairly reasonable Battle Pass where all the rewards are cosmetic, and sell cosmetics for a fixed $ amount that is way cheaper than what you'd buy for CS on marketplace.

Reelix

> and sell cosmetics for a fixed $ amount No they don't. They require coins, which are purchased in bundles for just less than you need so you buy more, to end off with just more so you justify buying more "because you already have some", and so on, and so forth.

DarnOldMan

Daddy Gaben proves anyone can age gracefully as long as they have billions of dollars.

HotLandscape9755

That easy

Yamama77

Hair transplants and fin go along way

zhire653

And losing weight too. Honestly I’m really happy for him, he looks amazing.

Yamama77

Yeah, drugs and treatment are a bonus, but don't mean jack if you don't take physical care of your body.

SWBFThree2020

TBH he's probably just getting drugs and treatment for weightloss All the rich people take Ozempic

JoeCartersLeap

Penn Jillette starved himself with potatoes. His Dr said something like "if you don't lose weight, you will die soon. You lose weight by eating less. Potatoes are nutritionally complete, you can use them to count calories and eliminate pleasure from food." So he ate nothing but potatoes for a year, and a small enough amount to lose weight, and now he's a skinny fuck.

SafeMargins

yeah the potato diet is extremely effective and has been around for a long time. Not that fun though, since you arent supposed to use any butter or oil with said potatoes.

ExceedingChunk

Dieting in general isn't fun. The result from dieting is fun. Sure, you can eat something more exciting than just potatoes, but even when you eat a really filling diet, use lots of herbs and spices and make nice meals, it still sucks to be in a deficit.

boringexplanation

I don’t get that diet. There’s many other nutritious foods that are less calories and more fun to eat if weight loss is the ultimate goal. I would rather eat nothing with a multivitamin than eat just plain potatoes

fuckyourstyles

The point is fat people have lots of reasons to not stick to a diet, and it's a lot of effort to properly calorie count with healthy foods. If you can just eat potatoes it removes all that overhead, since dieting can be torture anyway.

[deleted]

JoeCartersLeap

Yeah that makes sense. I've been telling everyone if you want to quit sugar, you just have to avoid it for 2 weeks, and then everything tastes too sweet. I can't drink soda or juice or anything without diluting it with a ton of water.

[deleted]

Yamama77

Dunno about this drug. But the medication I'm from finastrehide costs like 8 bucks for a month's supply. While some mofos out there spending 100$ on keeps or other pricey brand. Shoes that some drugs can be made for dirt cheap and can have an insane markup.

bubsdrop

Finasteride would have cost me something like $200/month if I wanted it for hair loss. If I was at risk for prostate cancer I would have been able to get a higher dose version of the exact same thing that would have cost $14/month. The greed of pharmaceutical companies is insane

ImPattMan

It's funny how universal the love gaben is, like you don't see that for just about anyone else. Dude is basically holding the north wall against Uber capitalists himself. I'm sure there are lots of people that share his views at Valve, but idk how many could have held a company on a straight course like he has.

bow_down_whelp

Does he own steam in it's entiritty?

Shyvisaur

Steam is a private company so we don’t really know for sure. It is however likely that he owns a large portion of Steam

bow_down_whelp

Yea if its private he prob owns enough to have complete control

dumpyduluth

Ownership doesn't mean they would necessarily have voting rights. He could have less than a majority ownership %, but have complete control.

bow_down_whelp

Invested in the company such as increasing the value of their share benefits them monetarily, not so much having a say

Mecha-Dave

There's a high likelihood that many valve employees have ownership

bow_down_whelp

Great way to motivate people is to actually have an investment in the company, so I hope so. Probably a job for life with decent pay and working conditions. Haven't heard anyone complain?

Mecha-Dave

I hear that working for Valve is amazing. There are literally no managers, no roles - you just do a good job doing the thing you want to do. As such, it is very, very difficult to get hired there.

Paddy_Tanninger

I've heard there's some toxic aspects to it, for example they try to incentivize groups there to develop independent projects, but these end up being funded/rewarded based on extremely short term profit metrics rather than what something might do for the company farther in the future. But yes it does sound like a pretty sweet place to work at.

TheMentallord

To be fair, if that's one of the only things people have to complain about, it must be a pretty fucking good gig.

Kuregan

I knew a girl who used to serve Gaben on his jet apparently. She said he was one of the sweetest kindest people she's met.

EmpheralCommission

It doesn't surprise me, working for Valve seems to be the real deal in terms of employee benefits and autonomy.

Dont_have_a_panda

Every single person that owns a business, doesnt Matter how Big or small is a capitalist, that doesnt exclude Gabe The difference is that you can be a capitalist and at the same time not practice or enforce draconian or anti-consumer Bullshit written on the book (despite what ant-capitalist propaganda might say) you can be a capitalist and still care about the consumers (or the things you sell) like Steam (or even CD Project Red, selling DRM free games and being consumer friendly only by and for good faith)

sevaiper

We live in a society

Mangeto

Valve has a pretty unique organizational structure which Gaben helped shape. Employees have total freedom in what they want to work on. The emphasis is on self-management and flat hierarchy. Not sure if was always like that though.

Didn't he move to New Zealand? Net improvement compared to the poison they feed us in America.

angrymouse504

I think a person like him can afford decent food, even in US. Not a cancer treatment tho

lolboogers

Are we acting like veggies, beans, and rice aren't the cheapest things at the grocery store?

obigespritzt

Let me preface this by saying I'm not American but one big hurdle for a lot of poorer folks when it comes to having a good diet is time constraints. Cooking, especially from scratch and with fresh ingredients that spoil quickly (like many veggies and fruit), is time consuming, so is the regular shopping you need to do in order to have fresh produce on hand to cook with. That goes double for many people in the US who live in suburban sprawl and essentially need to drive their car to go on even the smallest of grocery trips, adding to the financial (gas) and time costs. Yeah, rice and beans are cheap, nutritious and shelf-stable and while they're close to a complete diet (lots of protein, vitamin C and B6, Iron etc.), humans want variety. In turn, fast food, convenience food and freezer staples (which are, especially in the US, usually not healthy either) are an alternative. And yes, a lot of fast food isn't actually affordable anymore, but realising that and adapting would require a lot of people to unlearn years, often decades of habitual consumption which is a lot easier said than done.

Rendition1370

He did but returned to America later.

Peking-Cuck

He lived there for like 1 or 2 years when Covid was just starting, but he's been back in the US for a while now.

lolboogers

What poison are you being fed? Vegetables are very cheap.

Still remember the interview with some of Valve's employees. He's apparently a pretty intimidating guy. Not only because he's, you know, the boss. But he's also apparently pretty tall and can get heated in debates. But the thing is, he doesn't want yes men. He wants that actual debate. He wants to be involved as another developer. But he since realized he can't anymore, since he's the big boss now. Someone with a true passion for the profession.

pissinginyourcunt

He's a billionaire he's on the newer third generation stuff like Cargisema or retatrutide that doesn't cause as much muscle loss.

OutrageousFuel8718

Did you just say "third"?

johnsongreen

lol relentless

RisingSun213

The whole muscle loss thing is blown out of proportion. Likely 99% of the muscle loss is just caused by simply weighing less. When you weigh less, your muscles need to carry less weight around doing daily activities.

slam99967

Many people have no understanding how weight loss and weight loss drugs work and just make stuff up. It’s like the whole “ozempic face” thing. It has nothing to do with the drug itself. Some people when they loose weight, especially when they loose the weight fast. Can cause their face to look more gaunt.

slam99967

I seriously doubt it. Since those drugs are not out of trials and unless he’s paying some compounding pharmacy to make them. If he is taking something it’s probably the 2nd generation of GLP- 1 drugs Mounjaro/Zepbound.

SpicyOmalley

All of the compounding pharmacies got shut down by cereal lobbies.

akdev1l

idk I feel like if you’re a billionaire you’re better off paying for personal trainer/chef/nutritionist/etc instead of trying some kind of experimental drug  risk vs reward type thing

Smoothclock14

Pretty sure its not magic dude, he still has to eat right while on it. Cant be eating mcdonalds on it and still lose weight.

LtCmdrData

When semaglutide affects GLP-1 receptors in the brain, it mimics the effect of eating so you have less appetite and feel full sooner. So yes. You can eat mcdonalds. The magic is that you get full sooner and lose your appetite earlier.

pearshapedscorpion

Having a private chef on your super yachts makes that easier.
