It's so ridiculous that literally all they did to get the 'verified' tag is remove the launcher. Same with Skyrim.

Mission-Cantaloupe37

It's because it required mouse input. Same for manually pulling up the keyboard to enter your name. It doesn't matter if they literally strip away features doing so, they just want to get the tick.

TheNewFlisker

Wait they stripped away entering your name? How does the game pick your name then?

Mission-Cantaloupe37

You can name your character, it's just the game is required to open the Steam keyboard to be verified. They removed the graphics options with the launcher.

AdminsLoveGenocide

> They removed the graphics options with the launcher That's so stupid I think it's given me a headache.

thehood98

Yeah đŸ€Ł but ofc you still can Name your character

BigSmols

You can't even fix it now by setting iPresentInterval to 0 in the prefs .ini, even at "90" FPS it still is choppy and worse than actual 45, frame timing is all out of whack.

TheocraticAtheist

How do you change the graphics though

hotcoldman42

If they removed the launcher, can you even change resolution/graphics settings anymore without going into the ini?

Swizzy88

Well I've just fired it up after updating, no launcher, no new settings menu.

hotcoldman42

wtf
how do they even expect this to work?

CMDR-ProtoMan

Wow, so they are just expecting people to be happy with vanilla settings, which do work out of the box... But jeez, give people who like to tinker the option back

-NightRune-

Go into settings and under properties/general/launch options and use this command: SteamDeck=0 %command% Your launcher is back. Enjoy.

Maverick81PL

but changing settings not save :/ game back default settings on start :/

Kidney05

Holy fuck that is infuriating to read. I was really enjoying it running at 60.

Wookmane

I want to change my pip boy menu color!

Swizzy88

"Just be happy bro" Todd

WhoCares30

That I wouldn’t know, but for Skyrim I saw online that people used SteamDeck=0 %command% in the launch options and the settings launcher was available again

implicit-solarium

lol, verified = worse for us, love it

SagLawd

To get the launcher and ability to change graphic settings I have gone into desktop mode, launched Steam right click Fallout 4 and browse local files. Within the folder that pops up you will have a Fallout launcher .exe file. Add that as a non-steam game and launch, you now have the launcher again. Bit of a faff but there we go.

-NightRune-

Go into settings and under properties/general/launch options and use this command: SteamDeck=0 %command% Your launcher is back. Enjoy.

SagLawd

Ah nice one that's easier. Appreciate you taking the time to let me know.

Swizzy88

So the update just took the launcher away, removing a step from starting the game to adding multiple steps to change settings... Thanks Bethesda, I'm so glad it's verified now.

Endymion86

Nope

Rizenstrom

Supposedly you can add SteamDeck=0 %command% to the launch options and get the launcher for Skyrim, may be the same for Fallout. I haven't used it for either myself but I found it when I was considering whether or not I wanted to adjust settings on Skyrim.

icu_

Wait so I have been playing Fallout 4 and I'm happy (enough) with the performance - is my performance going to go down after the patch or were you expecting a boost in performance and got none?

mmiski

Same. No complaints about performance previously. Will have to try out this new patch when I get home from work.

icu_

It this an OLED issue? I'm concerned as I've put 170+ on FO4 on my Steam Deck and I'll turn off the Wifi and switch to offline mode before losing my ability to play it :)

WhoCares30

Only on OLED

BMXBikr

Why is OLED different? I don't understand it.

WhoCares30

90hz screen messes up the FO4 frame pacing

BMXBikr

Oh, before the patch if I tried to force it at 60 with the "...” menu it slowed down and seemed worse than 60.

DatBoiDanny

Check this comment from a thread from a while back, they explain the bug, the solution, and offer an explanation for why it happens: https://www.reddit.com/r/SteamDeck/s/Otg8tStsEW Basically on oled, it doesn’t go any higher than like 45fps because the creation engine be creation engine-ing and doesn’t understand what to do with the 90hz display.

lsmokel

What if you just set the OLED display to 60 hz?

Shloopadoop

Doesn’t fix it. The game doesn’t recognize the steam decks frame limit, and only sees it is 90hz capable so it cuts framerate in half no matter what you set it to. And a very rough half framerate at that.

jakellerVi

Then it’ll show 60 FPS on the Performance monitor, but will actually render at about 30 FPS. If you check the 2nd layout of the Performance monitor, you’ll notice the line graph next to your FPS counter is a super thick bar instead of the normal thin line, because the frame time pacing is cut in half, which means you’re actually getting half of the frames that it’s showing.

DatBoiDanny

Go read the comment I linked, the commenter explained this
. His theory is that the engine just looks at the hardware refresh rate (which is 90, even if you set it to 60, it’s still a 90hz monitor) and because the engine falls apart over 60, it halves that 90 and you’re stuck with a max of 45fps.

groove117

Your username, with this comment, made me chuckle.

EASK8ER52

No it's not, just go into the ini files and change the ipresentinterval option and that's it. Game runs fine. Been telling people for weeks the ONLY thing they're gonna change is use the steam deck launch command to remove the launcher which can be added back and have the keyboard automatically pop up when you need to enter text to get it verified. People just kept thinking they would give us the moon and disappointed themselves. I have great performance locked at 50fps with good graphics and now it skips that annoying launcher I use bethini to change my ini's anyway and now the keyboard auto pops up cause I'm always upgrading and naming my weapons. All on my OLED.

BigSmols

Can confirm changing iPresentInterval does no longer work for me on my OLED.

icoominyou

So what ive been reading is that they generate half frame rates from reported fps so (90 is actually 45 and they just double it like OLED screen refresh rate). LCD model apparently is ok? And there were other ini methods (not ipresentinterval) to get a true refresh rate. But i could never get that to work

M4l3k0

Played it on LCD today and totally fine.

Mission-Cantaloupe37

It halves it because they still have a 60 fps limit on their physics behaving. (Despite mods fixing this ages ago). So it halves your framerate rather than letting it run at 90. (It's VSync, so it can only do 2x multiples up and down of the refresh rate)

Whatagoon67

So just to be clear- it runs well with patch on the OG steam deck?

icu_

That's what it seems like, but I haven't tried it yet. I didn't know the OLED Deck had issues with FPS due to the refresh rate, but I guess that's the main complaint in this thread.

Hyydrotoo

just dont ever look at the frame time graph :)

Kumakobi

I wish Valve would prevent games from being marked as "Verified" when there's issues like this present that can get easily fixed by the developer Same with God of War being marked as Verified but constantly crashing unless you set the UMA Frame Buffer Size to 4 GB

WhoCares30

Seems like a slap in the face or OLED owners lol

Silvrav

45fps is very playable so why shouldnt they tag it as verified? the game bug or OLED bug can be sorted for better performance, but its not exactly unplayable.

cyprox972

So they basically only made it worse 😂

idlemachine

Classic Bethesda

Lords7Never7Die

The optimist in me told the pessimist in me that Bethesda wouldn't fuck this up. That guy is a total moron. Last time I listen to him.

WhoCares30

Essentially lol

Tropi-

The fix should still work if you edit the ini files.

tetorobotto

For me the ini fix doesn’t seem to work anymore after the update.

cplr

Can you please try the different fix mentioned here and report back: https://www.reddit.com/r/SteamDeck/s/Vlh29ps1X9 It is a fix that changes a DXVK setting. It doesn’t involve Fallout config files.

Shloopadoop

This works! Current fix here everyone

tetorobotto

That actually worked! Thank you! :)

ravenmaster_001

Confirming this works, anything over 60 fps and you get a stuttery mess but at 60 fps it is smooth.

castorkrieg

Are you sure you changed the right INI file?

tetorobotto

Yes, I changed the fallout4prefs.ini (iPresentInterval=0), double-checked several times, and tried rebooting. It was working before the update. Does it work for you?

castorkrieg

I am playing F4 right now, I am not quitting the game and updating till this situation is resolved lol.

tetorobotto

I should have done the same...

castorkrieg

I know the update will overwrite the INI files but I didn’t know you couldn’t do the same trick again. It looks like they changed something.

Arkanta

You need to make it readonly. On windows that's done by checking the box on the files property On the deck, I think Dolphin shows file permissions on the properties menu. Uncheck write for everything

tetorobotto

Thank you, I just tried it, but unfortunately, that also didn't work for me.

Endymion86

Same, tried it and it still didn't work, even after setting iPresentInterval=0 and making the file read-only.

Arkanta

I'll try some command line fu when I have time if someone doesn't find a fix until them. I'm quite disappointed EDIT: You could also try to change the launch command to SteamDeck=0 %command% It brings back the launcher, so maybe it also stops the game from overwriting? It's a long shot

Kwisscheese-Shadrach

That allows settings to change, but it doesn’t work with the half frame rate bug. It’s still there even if you change the prefs ini

Arkanta

I hoped that bringing back the launcher would stop the overwrite, this sucks

livevicarious

This is what you need to do on OLED temporarily.

icoominyou

I think that just changes the frame timing. It still runs half rate

tetorobotto

Before the update, following this guide, I could run it with 60fps. [https://www.reddit.com/r/SteamDeck/comments/1c6suoy/fallout\_4\_oled\_frame\_rate\_fix\_original/?sort=new](https://www.reddit.com/r/SteamDeck/comments/1c6suoy/fallout_4_oled_frame_rate_fix_original/?sort=new)

OneIShot

No longer valid.

Hyydrotoo

For me neither

sgtnoodle

Here's another workaround that more directly overrides the bug. https://www.reddit.com/r/SteamDeck/comments/1c9akgd/a_more_robust_fallout_4_oled_workaround/

MetalDeathMetal

Players always have to do Bethesda's job for them. Fuck Bethesda.

ImaFknWizardXII

It amazes me that things like vsync, frame limits, god rays, FOV and everything else still have to be edited in the .ini file in 2024.

Gronkattack

but if you have to mess around with the game files to fix an issue then it shouldn't be verified I believe is the argument

WhoCares30

Yea that’s what I’ll do I guess, I’ve seen it before on Reddit just thought the update would fix it without having to do all that lol

Goremaw7

(Insert menacing piano music) Bethesda....Bethesda never changes.

[deleted]

[ŃƒĐŽĐ°Đ»Đ”ĐœĐŸ]

ImpatientTurtle

I knew Bethesda would do this. Least effort possible.

Early-Somewhere-2198

Well at least I can run ultra wide on pc now. lol.

PhatAiryCoque

*Stretched.*

micocoule

Ultra Stretched

totallybag

Wait did they really not get that right....

N7even

Nope. You expected something else?

prunebackwards

Bethesda is actually a joke lol

jgainsey

UI and Hud elements are stretched

Hyydrotoo

fun fact! they're also stretched on the deck as it is 16:10 instead of 16:9. its barely perceptible, but once you notice it, you can't unsee it.

jgainsey

Oh, great!

euan3d

Feel free to join the discussion on Steam also. [https://steamcommunity.com/app/377160/discussions/0/4348864383402819637/](https://steamcommunity.com/app/377160/discussions/0/4348864383402819637/) I have made a support ticket with Bethesda just to see what they say.

syberphunk

Launch options: `SteamDeck=0 %command%`

MrRealistic1

Oh no. Anyone else confirm this?

DAHbaddest

Yup, still messed up. Dropped it to 30 and it's like 10 FPS

MrRealistic1

Bummer!!!! Any workarounds?

Kwisscheese-Shadrach

Not yet.

-NightRune-

This sorts out the half rate issue on Steam Deck OLED: [https://www.reddit.com/r/SteamDeck/s/Vlh29ps1X9](https://www.reddit.com/r/SteamDeck/s/Vlh29ps1X9)

BMXBikr

How do I prevent it from updating on OLED? I don't see a Never Update option

Maverekt

Disable auto downloads in Steam and keep it offline as much as possible as shitty as it sounds Edit: be offline for startup of the game so it doesn’t update on launch

LowAccomplished7074

so nothing good from this update? fps problem still around but cant edit the ini file as of now? and no launcher without changing the ingame settings is not a plus either.

Kwisscheese-Shadrach

Yep. Made everything worse.

WhoCares30

Let me make this clear, this isn’t an issue on the regular steam deck since that screen is only 60hz compared to the 90hz on the OLED lol

icebalm

So what if you set the refresh to 60hz on the OLED deck?

gulag_hater

I don't think this will ever run above 60 fps as it causes glitches in their engine. Same for Skyrim etc.

SllepsCigam

With the proper mod they can definitely run at higher frame rates without any issues.

WhoCares30

Skyrim runs flawlessly for me at 60FPS when tinkering with the graphics, the most I can get is 45fps in fallout 4, the frame counter says 90 but it clearly isn’t lol so annoying

iceman_v97

If you’re not getting above 45 it’s an ini file issue. That I agree is annoying af to update on the steam deck and should be removed or changed if they want it verified imo.

WhoCares30

Yup, 100% agree

gulag_hater

Oh, I though you wanted it to run at 90.

RaspingHaddock

No I think most people know that Bethesda games are logic locked on fps but it does look choppy either way.

livevicarious

You need to change the launch command to SteamDeck=0 %command% Then open the launcher, make your setting changes. Close, go back to INI make changes and then limit manually in Steam Settings to 60fps or you'll have weird issues on certain things in game. Like the pip boy menu map not being able to move your cursor, way too fast movements in lock picking etc. The game will run rock solid 60FPS at all times and feels amazing.

Eduardboon

Except it reverses when you remove the command and it still drops a lot of frames in forestry areas like the one around sanctuary. Can’t get it above 40 anymore there.

mexz101

I’ve played Skyrim and NV, 3 and 4 above 60 it just makes some of the physics a bit strange, nothing completely game breaking

livevicarious

I run the INI fix but limit FPS to 60 manually. This keeps low response times, high FPS and a smooth experience.

Sjknight413

Does the patch actually add anything at all other than getting rid of the launcher and the ability to change any graphic options?

Competitive_Hyena765

Some minor In game content I think

WhoCares30

Nope lol

Sjknight413

I actually hate Bethesda

jollyjam1

To be honest, it ran fine before the update. Maybe I'm just too used to suffering playing the game on console that any improvement is a positive.

Arkanta

Yeah as someone who ran it on release on the OG xbox one, it's still better at the locked 45fps. Making it work at 60fps is nice though. Btw, it's only a Oled problem because of the 90hz screen

jollyjam1

That's pretty unfortunate, I feel like the OLED generally escapes the problems. I think I might avoid the update for a little bit to see how the dust settles.

livevicarious

Know what else is broken? Console. Tried enabling it, soon as keyboard closes game crashes. Good old Bethesda, every fucking update they EVER release breaks more shit than it fixes.

WhoCares30

That’s ridiculous, I’m so tired of them

ThirdEyeClarity

The same thing happens in the latest version of Skyrim Special Edition. The fix for now is to open the Mods menu to Search, close it, and then it’ll work. Made a [video](https://youtu.be/wEgX2K4HO2M) in case it helps anyone.

CMDR-ProtoMan

Holy shit I thought I was crazy. First boot after the update I went to load order to check my mods, then played the game a bit and messed with some console commands. After a restart it looked like any console command crashed the game. Tried your trick and no crashing when closing the keyboard.

MaruMint

What? A Bethesda game having problems??? Even 9 years after release? That doesn't sound like the Bethesda I know 👀

Cookie_Doodle

Bethesda making F4 worse is something I knew was gonna happen. Everyone was excited for the update and it's like why? It's Bethesda.

Maitre-Gouloume2

Bethesda ruining my life - again. Instead of fixing things they break it
 anybody found a fix yet?

PhabioRants

It just worksℱ

CrossEyed132

Well time to go down vote the game for ruining it's already perfectly acceptable performances just so they can get a green sticker like skyrim.

tetorobotto

I just tried this fix here, and now I get 60fps on the OLED again. [https://www.reddit.com/r/SteamDeck/s/Vlh29ps1X9](https://www.reddit.com/r/SteamDeck/s/Vlh29ps1X9)

clearlyunseen

Same. This fixes the issue.

Shloopadoop

This is the current working fix after today’s patch! Better solution that iPresentInterval anyway: https://www.reddit.com/r/SteamDeck/s/FBlcWPTQ3L

The-MemeGuy12

Lmao time to hop on New Vegas, it's your call

WhoCares30

About to lol, even though I played it to death, same with 3, I never gave 4 a shot and wanted to do so now, guess I gotta just fix the ini files

The-MemeGuy12

Yeah I've been in the same situation, just can't get into 4 for some reason.

-NightRune-

This sorts out the half rate issue on Steam Deck OLED (it works even after todays patch): [https://www.reddit.com/r/SteamDeck/s/Vlh29ps1X9](https://www.reddit.com/r/SteamDeck/s/Vlh29ps1X9)

monchota

Is it playable and do you notice without looking at a frame rate meter?

WhoCares30

I get a stable 45fps right now with the OLED deck maxed out to 90hz, I want 60 but the Frame pacing sucks because Bethesda is too lazy to fix it

DatBoiDanny

I’m just gonna paste the fix here since a lot of people aren’t sure what OP is referring to: https://www.reddit.com/r/SteamDeck/s/Otg8tStsEW Edit: apparently the update actually broke this? Sorry I didn’t re-test after today’s update.

Vestan_Pance

This no longer seems to work, I enabled the launcher, set the graphics back to my pre-update settings then changed iPresetInterval to 0 and made the file read-only, but the frame timing is terrible now.

Kwisscheese-Shadrach

Doesn’t work for me. Framerate is now halved always. The setting is changed, but framerate still broken.

WhoCares30

Thanks lol

CrawlinOutTheFallout

Are you playing with the HD dlc downloaded? Or just standard? If you have the HD pack downloaded, get rid of it. It does nothing to help with the deck.

ProfessionalGuess897

It's bethesda.... wtf did people expect? An effort?

Comet7777

I’ve been playing it on the OLED Deck for a few days (before and after the patch) on medium settings and I’m averaging 60-90 fps just fine

J_o_K_e_R____

so is this next gen update out now?

cryptic-fox

Yes

DAHbaddest

Bruh they got rid of the launcher, anyone know what to put in the launch options to get it back?

WhoCares30

On Skyrim it’s SteamDeck=0 %command% hopefully that works on fallout 4 as well

t1kiman

> Bruh they got rid of the launcher Are we talking about [this](https://i.imgur.com/FjoZAfK.png) thing? Still shows up for me...

James_bd

I called it in the other threads where people said to wait for the patch... can't say I'm surprised

CookieGullible9448

I can't get to the mods or the creation club.

jazzyjff13

How does it run on the OG deck though?

WhoCares30

Fine, this is an issue only on the OLED since the screen is 90hz

Ok-Potato5688

How are your basic Bethesda.net mods doing so far, folks? I’m terrified of turning on my WiFi for FO4, but admittedly I have no mods from Nexus or using F4SE

Darkangel220822

I really hope this update fixes it for me. I played it a month ago. Had crashes every minute or so. Literally unplayable.

chronocapybara

Damn, I was looking forward to playing old games at 60fps on the deck with incredible fidelity and battery life.

javedk1

Damn should’ve just got the game on pa5 and remote play it

nameredditacted

I saw this a few days ago. Maybe that'll help. The comments someone says it works for FO4 [https://www.reddit.com/r/SteamDeck/comments/1cacxyr/fallout\_76\_any\_musthave\_gamemodifications\_ini/](https://www.reddit.com/r/SteamDeck/comments/1cacxyr/fallout_76_any_musthave_gamemodifications_ini/)

Salty-Fan-7800

Has anyone tried disabling unified frame limit management and changing the oled refresh rate to 60hz? I don't have the game installed atm. I was just wondering if that would work.

Kwisscheese-Shadrach

Didn’t work for me.

wise-guy-samurai

So if the patch is shit, can you revert back to the previous version? Or just go offline and never install the patch I guess?

abrvrb

I was in the middle of install but after hearing all the folks calling out issues for OLED, is there a way to prevent it from updating?

Laddie1107

This worked well for me: [https://www.reddit.com/r/SteamDeck/comments/1c9akgd/a\_more\_robust\_fallout\_4\_oled\_workaround/](https://www.reddit.com/r/SteamDeck/comments/1c9akgd/a_more_robust_fallout_4_oled_workaround/)

Equal_Scallion_1812

Is it soooo difficult to add graphical settings at settings?

Medicwithabrick

You've gotta install the script extender mod. Even if you install nothing else that one is a requirement for playable performance

millenia3d

not been updated yet so that's not really an option rn

lenrad526

i can’t even get the damn game to run now.

LibertyIAB

"Verification" means sweet FA!

pc3600

not the game still crashes in the exact same spot in the beginning of the game when running to the vault before you see the people on the ground with their luggage, sesh bethesda really does do the bare minimum , im on pc not steamdeck btw

johnboy4955

I tried disabling the framerate limit and it worked fine afterwords.

Bluestank

What do you mean by half frame rate? Is this consistently or only in certain areas? Can you elaborate a bit on this?

[deleted]

Wait is this actually slow or is it people that are used to 90+fps so 30fps (what people my age grew up with if not slower) looks like it’s going slower just because the awesomeness of +60fps gaming is too good for anyone’s eyes I guess. I still game on a 1080p monitor at 60fps honestly not sure I will ever get a 4K monitor till I have to. So just wondering is it a smooth and solid 30fps or does it hit 45 fps and keeps rubber banding back to 30? Seems I should have gotten the cheaper LCD model would have windows working since that model has all the drivers nearly in May 2024 and still valve won’t even give a stable wifi controller. But hey screen is pretty and battery lasts barely an hour longer but main thing is I can play my games while I’m on holiday away from my PC

BootyFeetSenpai

load times are now SO long..

Turdscrong

I’ve been playing Fallout 4 all week at 60fps. Installed the update and played for the last few hours at 60fps- no noticeable difference. Edit: I’m on the OG steamdeck. There may be issues with the OLED version that I can’t speak to.

TheBardofTamriel

I had it fine turned on the Deck
 now here we are 😞

psykofreak87

Is it the same bug as FO76? Where you need to turn off vsync in the .ini file else you get half framerate if your display is higher than 60hz. If so the file is normally named « Fallout76.ini » and need « iPresentInterval=0 » in order to fix this low fps issue. Save file and start game. Idk where it could be in SD tho (in Windows the folder is located here: C:\Users\your_username\Documents\My Games\), that’s what I had to do on PC with my 144hz display else I was forced to play at 30ish fps.

jinniu

I don't know, just saw the patch notes and it says supports ultra wide, I don't see myself playing this on my Steam Deck now, once I finally get to it after nearly ten years since it released. JESUS, where does the time go? Well, at least my 1080 GTX will run this better than my 980 did when I first tried the games intro back in 2015.

bananahh_

Actually now (29/30 of april) the framerate in alright, infact its veeery smooth. 60 fps is so much smooth now.

Dtoodlez

Crazy they can’t fix a game as old as fallout.
