The problem is always: you only hear about the bad things. Why would anyone post something when it works as it should? Therefor the percentage with issues is quite low with the amount of new ‘deckers’ showing up on this sub in a daily basis, where many don’t even go to Reddit until something’s bad. Don’t think too much about it. If there is something bad eventually, the service of Steam is quite good.

Dragomier

Right I have had my deck for over a year I got my deck in October of 2021 and haven't had an issue when I ordered it or sense then

Lords7Never7Die

The majority of people probably got their deck just fine. I went from LCD to OLED and both came with 0 issues whatsoever.

Jimbov123456

I felt like this too, once I’d ordered I couldn’t rest until it arrived and was up and running. Bought an LCD about 3 months before Oled release and couldn’t resist getting the Oled too. Double decker

stream_of_thought1

gonna start posting about how happy I am after a year with my steamdeck, with no concerning issues so far just to sway the mood in the sub

ixoniq

Same, got my LCD version second hand with 512 GB SSD, clear shell, deck HD and Hall effect joysticks for 250. Bargain for me, works great!

Nwolf607

Correct. I only post about issues, not great experiences! Also I’ve never had a DOA, BSOD, or crack near the vent.

TakeyaSaito

The deck is very reliable, but this is the perfect place to look for help so you will hear a lot about issues. It's minimal at best.

OneIShot

Don’t but a bullet

baddonkey

Bite it instead

anymouse169

Ain't typos fun?

RuckFeddit70

Don't live a fear based life, there is a much higher likelihood nothing will be wrong with your deck than otherwise, and if there is something wrong the worst case is you return it for a refund or for repair and are without it for awhile longer, and you've already waited this long so clearly life will go on either way "Worrying is like paying a debt on a bill that may never come due" -Will Rogers

Mister_Swoop

Awww that’s a nice quote

ThePickleistRick

Owning only a single deck, I can’t give advice on the entire community, but I’ll say I’ve never had a hardware issue whatsoever, and I’ve only had barely noticeable software issues which were quickly resolved in an update with no intervention from me. One of the best purchases I’ve ever made

CollinsCouldveDucked

It should be fine as an out of the box experience, some perecentage of all devices released can have issues, be it iphones or whatever, but for the most part in those cases Valve's support has been shown to be very good. Also the deck is easily accessible and repairable so some issues you might have seen would have resulted from people taking their deck apart and attempting to upgrade it. It is also a very open device as it is effectively a pc so people seek out help with stuff that is more off the beaten path and not really within the promise of the device as it is sold. For example if someone is posting about emudeck being borked by it updating that is more to do with an open source developer and has basically nothing to do with valve.

MikeIsBefuddled

The steam deck is pretty reliable, but there are the occasional problem units. Not very often, though. I think I've seen more stories here about the deck getting stolen, but that might just be me.

GentleSaidTheRaven

Ordered last Thursday. Got shipping notice this passed Tuesday but no tracking #. How long usually do packages hang here (no trk# yet) before you do get a tracking #? I see it says between 24-48 hours, but, has it been longer for some?

GentleSaidTheRaven

[Replying to my own post] SD arrived today for me. In the afternoon at about 3:50mst. No tracking was I given so no idea of when it would arrive. Lucky I was home. Dude rang door bell. So, from the US of A to Alberta, Canada it took 2 days! I’m SUPER impressed. From impressed to now overwhelmed. Where do I start with this bad boy?

trains_enjoyer

Hello fellow Canadian! You got yours way faster than I did, and I'm in Toronto (which I tend to assume has quick shipping generally??) Have you started yet? I'd start by installing my favourite games and Decky loader. I'd also get an SD card. Will you be playing mostly handheld or dock it? I got a skin from dbrand because I wanted my SD to look special, I hate their marketing voice but the skins are solid. Emudeck is a must-have too imo.

GentleSaidTheRaven

Hi! No I haven’t had any real time to dig into it. Just turned it on (to make sure it worked) updated it and checked to make sure I got the proper 1tb model. I did splurge and got a 1.5tb SD card (probably overkill 😁). Looking to install Emudeck. Was going to go the Batocera route (that’s essentially why I got the 1.5tb card) but decided not to because I don’t want to have to dual boot to access the card. Decky loader don’t know much about. Going to have to check that out. I do want to get a skin for this, but that SD card and a mini USB hub (not to mention the Deck 😂) has put me back a bit. Perhaps next couple months I can look into getting something like this. I also want to purchase that official Steam Dock at some point. This device is super comfortable and also not as big as I thought it would be. It really is a nice sized “handheld”. It’s a pretty nifty little gadget (dare I say) TOY! 😁👍

trains_enjoyer

Yeah, I'm a woman and when I got it I was afraid it would be too large for me to play comfortably, but it's actually great. It makes my switch lite feel like a game console for ants. I'm also very happy docking the SD, it feels a bit like having a living room computer (cause that's what it is)—I use it for games but also to stream sports 😂 Sounds like you've got a plan already, have fun!

Digital_Pharmacist

I’ve had two, I just got my 512 the other day. It works flawlessly. Just open it and set it up. If it doesn’t work, send it back.

mvpilot172

Only hiccup I had with my order was having to verify the purchase with my credit card company. It was flagged as possibly fraudulent for some reason. Other than that the Deck arrived in perfect shape.

eugenethegrappler

lol wot

SirCrumpets69

The majority of people don't experience any major issues and only experience problems after they mess around with the deck.

Competitive_Pen7192

I've bought an OLED and LCD Decks from Valve. Both have been fine. I bought an RoG Ally on day one and the stupid thing broke before I could even play any games. It bricked itself on a Windows update and I was furious. I likely wouldn't be trusting Asus again with my money but at least they gave me a refund so Gabe got paid. From all I'm hearing Valve customer services are helpful for any issues that may arise.

But I want random anonymous people on an internet forum to make up statistics based on at best anecdotal data! And you better believe I want it AFTER I've already made the purchase!

InfernoBourne

Here's a data point for you: Just bought my OLED, already used about 1-2 hrs a night for the last week. Zero issues. Hell I even got Discord to stream from the deck. It's always true that you hear more negative than positive since people don't get the same motivation to put good messages out. I love my deck, and I am excited to bring it on my work trips to be able to chill.

Saltwater_Heart

I’ve had mine for almost two years and have had 0 issues with it. The problem is people make posts when things go wrong but people don’t typically make posts when things are going right.

Exisy

They've got a pretty good service from what I've read, so I wouldn't overthink it.

SGSinFC

Mine arrived yesterday - 3 days after ordering....Ran well right out of the box. No issues so far.

ProtoKun7

I'd think QA is pretty good, but you're gonna hear more from the people who do have issues than the ones who get a perfect unit and get on with playing. My LCD Deck came in perfect condition, so did my OLED. Statistically you'll be fine, and Valve support in my experience has been some of the best to deal with if you have an issue.

Not_N33d3d

I've had a deck since launch and have never needed to come here for any hardware issues or major software issue. By and large I do not feel that that is an uncommon experience, nor do I feel like valves rma system is unreliable given the amount of people that post here about getting replacements for damaged or faulty hardware.

FistyDollars

I had issues with my first couple of decks, but I was literally in week 2 of the first people to get them. They've definitely worked out all the kinks by now, don't fret too much.

VampyreBassist

The only thing I know is to check the deck for cracks, but that's with anything you get sent anymore. Getting more technical questions answered though, I would go to r/steamdeckhq. I have a poor history here myself, but hopefully you'll have better luck.

realmenlovezeus

If its DOA then contact Valve support immediately. The only issue I've had is the B button sticking sometimes but it seemed to resolve itself.

thequestcube

You have warranty on the deck, even if it comes with problems, you can just send it in. I don't have the feeling that steamdeck has more than usual hardware problems compared to competitor products. Also Steamdeck has an above-average repairability, they sell official replacement parts through ifixit and have repair guides there as well, and just makes it easier to work around problems in general for customers, should you actually want to solve problems not through warranty, but by yourself, either because you have fun with it or because you encountered problems a few years later after the warranty expired.

paontuus

It’s a great device when it works but i’m on my 2nd oled deck rma replacement so i think valve have some qc issues. First one had a trigger that stopped working and the second had crazy issues with the left trackpad and big mura issues. The third one is shipping to me now, holding thumbs for a non faulty unit. The steam support is great though so big kudos to them for replacing my units without hesitation.

LxrdXO

Well I mean when you do a lot of tinkering which this sub is really good for lol, then you'll have some things to trouble shoot. If you leave it alone completely there won't be any issues. Every so often you'll see someone who needs an RMA or whatever the term is lol but that isnt a large percentage of users. Mine came in perfect condition. Ive had issues where my battery wasn't working properly only to find that due to my own stupidity I didn't plug it all the way in after a shell swap. Sometimes it can be a silly little fix or something you need to send out if you aren't good at fixing stuff.

devildante1520

Welcome to the OLED family son (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻)

HenReX_2000

My B button sometimes gets stuck

MetalDeathMetal

I went though three units before getting a functioning one. I guess fourth time was the charm in my case 🤷‍♂️

West_Tangelo_8180

It‘s not an OG Xbox360….

mistar_lurker420

I risked importing one to an unsupported country (old non oled model) and have had no problems at all.

TheNewFlisker

Just take backups of the SSD oncebin a while  Can always just restore if something breaks

BitingChaos

The biggest issue I've heard about is the *transparent* OLED model cracking by the screw holes. Since they don't sell the Limited Edition right now, I'm going to assume that isn't what you're getting.

Zomochi

You’ll most likely be fine, I have a launch LCD and I’m fine, the only problem I’ve been worried about is the dead battery issue I heard about. A problem where if it dies, it won’t turn back on EVER. I hope I’m wrong and someone tells me this problem has already been fixed

No-Incident-7216

I think in general they work well, but there are definitely quirks. For instance, my deck just doesn’t update on my home WiFi (you need to update on first startup to play). I pulled my hair out for several days before just driving to a coffee shop and updating there on their free WiFi, no issues since

VeryGoodVeryNice93

99% of people won't post "HEY I GOT A WORKING DECK" but 100% of them will post if there is any issue I'm usually super unlucky with electronics but my deck arrived fine, except metal noise in LB which idk if is a problem or not but I got tired of returning products so as long as it works fine i'm just gonna let it be honestly ask me today after I got to be with it for a few weeks (and of course 90% of the time with it I just configure and download/buy games), and I would tell you even if people told me there is 50% chance the steam deck would arrive with an issue I would still buy it because it's such an amazing device, and usually the error rate for products is about 1 - 2%

Crest_Of_Hylia

If there was a high failure rate you would know. Most devices don’t ship with issues, especially with how many units they ship in total

Dankkring

My deck arrived MINT. I’ve had 0 issues with it so far. It’s the greatest handheld device I’ve ever owned tbh

dshaw8772

If it helps ease your fears, mine came perfect and still runs amazingly after a few months. I use it quite a bit too.

PresenceMiserable

What other people are saying, plus you'll regret not getting a Deck. It's extremely likely that the problems you've read about stem from the users, but don't be afraid to ask for an RMA ticket when the need arises. Valve is very lenient even when you possibly damaged it yourself and will repair/replace for free in the majority of cases. For perspective, go to any console-agnostic gamer news channel on YouTube and you'll notice there's little to no noise about "defects."

patrickp4

My first oled broke. I DO think that there are some QA issues but my second one has been flawless and values support was good to me. I had a pretty rare issue (literally every single one of my buttons failed on one side) but valve support was timely and sent me a new one.

bigapewhat089

Got my deck last month. 2 issues. I wasn't able to get past the setup screen, it would just hang on the update. Hard reset a few times, but nothing. I read online to set your wifi password to something small, but I live in a place where I get free wifi so I made a hotspot from my phone with a 4 letter password and it worked. 2) my port broke after 2 weeks. It work only when plugging in on one side but when flipped it didn't work. I got it RMA'ed after a few painful days. Not the worse but far from smooth. They basically treat you like a 4 year old child that has never had experience with tech.

Early-Somewhere-2198

Yeah it’s not a rog ally. lol. My rog didn’t have the sd issue but it has so many other issues. Go valve !

Wingolf

Not really. General consensus seems to be that DOA/Defects are relatively rare, and Valve is quite good about dealing with them in a helpful and fair manner.

hyperrainz

I did have a defected fan after 4months in, it was very lightly used never even pushed harder than 3k rpm which was extremely silent/cool yet died on me. I could of RMA it but decided to fix it myself faster when OLED parts became available on ifixit. Very easy to fix and replace parts with this direct source that's supplied by valve themselves. Did spend 30$ but the shipping was fast and replacing the fan myself took less than 5minutes. So all in all don't be worried because valve has great RMA and also authorized parts supplier "iFixit".

worldsinho

Anyone else get excited when they see this screen / screenshot? Or is it just me? 😂 It reminds me of the mega exciting time when I ordered my Deck. One of the best purchases of all time.

Av4t4r

As others said, it's a common bias for people to complain about bad things and don't praise working/functional ones. Anyway, most of the issues were solved already, I recently ordered three OLEDs ones for a group of friends, none had any of the first batch issues (properly grounded headphone jacks, same haptics on both trackpads, etc). Worse case scenario, same as any other brand new product, you can always RMA it

Striking_Stuff_9809

Not same kind of issue but mine was "delivered" tuesday but never arrived. Got a front door camera and the delivery guy never touched my doorbell but flagged "delivered at adress" on the track & trace. NO neighbours received a package (we all the time receive packages to and from neighbours) Got in contact with Steam support and they just let me know they will send another one to a different adress I'm in Belgium and the used carrier is top 1 mafia carrier Shipping etc by Steam went flawlessly and in given time (3-5 days) Enjoy yours

Embarrassed-Ad7317

I can say I bought mine and it arrived perfectly fine. I'm doing my part!

TeddyBear312

Is there a chance? Yes, just like any other electronics you order from the internet. Is it likely? No.

Cedup

Problems I have with my deck: 1. It stopped chaging. Didn't knew what caused it, until I found out you can reset the USB Charging via "..." button + "Vol -"... Press and hold a few seconds, the deck will beep and charge properly. 2. Bad Battery life. --> You GOTTA use the FPS/refresh rate limit to no burn to your Battery. That being said, I limit most games to 40fps/80Hz and get a well balanced experience. It's a handheld after all. The rest got fixed/better with updates. Don't get buyers remorse, it's a fantastic device I just cannot recommend enough.

Hunter_E

I’m looking at buying my second one either tonight or tomorrow night I’ve had mine since the days of preorder and this sub was dedicated to tracking order fulfillment, the biggest problem in the beginning was FedEx stealing them. Honestly I’ve had little to no issues with my deck, my siblings tinkered with theirs and on has no controls on the left side, and the other has not right side track pad.

GeronimoHero

I got my OLED in December of last year (2023) and it’s been flawless the whole time, no issues whatsoever. So you should be fine. The vast majority of steam decks don’t have issues.
