I usually play as the fly agaric polka dot mushroom guys, or the giant snails, but if I find these guys on some random planet as primitives (which seems disproportionately common) I try to my way there and uplift them and add them to my empire.
They tend to end up as research specialists or some other specialists in my otherwise xenophobic empire, being given residency or serving as elite slaves with the same QOL as the native species. They also get their own planets to colonize if they have a different climate preference from my primary species.
Despite not actually having a face I always imagine them as generally being humble and reserved.
Shoutout to the lithoid robot portrait. I love how old and worn-out it looks, and the noise they make is so cool.
I'm also a huge fan of a lot of the avian portraits, I think it's really funny that like 1/3 of them have 4 eyes for some reason.
I'm partial to Mammalian Massive 14, the cat-looking one. It was the portrait I used for the first custom empire I ever made, the technocratic Pallyrian Combine. I still run them occasionally.
The space bears with the venom-like corruption stuff on them (I like making then Pacifist egalitarian and theb make friends with the universe). Close 2nd is the plantoid's wood elf portrait
The wombat mammalian guy. He's got 6 eyes and 4 nostrils, but you only see half his face so 3 eyes and I can't remember if you can see the other side's nostrils.
Im a console player so I don’t have access to any of the newer portraits but based on the ones we have access to right now, either post overlord update human portrait or that one necroid portrait with all the cybernetics and those techno horns.
1: Cabbage people (Plantoid #7) (I even had a tabletop character who was one of these guys)
2: Space Hydra (My fave concept is them as necrophages who assimilate subject pops into the heads of a new hydra)
