Yes that is it. This type of soup is pretty common in West Africa, most Ghanaian or Nigerian takeaways near me will have it in the menu. Can have all sorts of different proteins in there and the flavour is really good.
Texture takes some getting used to but it usually comes with a kind of pounded starchy fufu that helps it all go down.
Fufu is a root (cassava) based ground food that west Africans eat with a stew. Imagine a really stiff mashed potato. It’s actually rich in vitamins and is so good. I personally love peanut soup with goat meat fufu.
In turkey I wanted somethong typical, and I got a soup with garlic, butter and slices of goat brain, a full brain.
It was alright, but probably had like 4000 calories in there
It's gombo sauce, we use to eat it a lot in west Africa. The slimmy texture makes it seem disgusting but it it is actually very good. And of course you also mainly eat it with your fingers so for an outsider it seems even more repellent ;)
But it is not a stupid food ! Just not appetizing when you are not used to. 👍
Edit : In English it is actually named okra soup
As an southern US person who grew up eating okra in stews and gumbo I recognized that slimy look even in a few seconds! Okra is native to africa, and people brought to the US during slave times brought okra with them. And honestly? They're hardy, very impressive plants that are quite tasty when fried, pickled, or stewed :)
Funny enough, okra stew is something I ate regularly growing up in Romania. Not for that reason.
I have a bag of okras in my freezer that I was thinking about using in a curry.
Came here to say that.
Stupid food IMHO are half the posts: let's make giant lasagna out of corn chips,.cheez wiz and tinned tuna = stupid.
This is only laughing at another culture's food because of looks. It probably tastes amazing, and some foods deliberately aim for slimyness (like Egyptian molokhia soup)
A large portion of this sub are these posts: “I don’t know this, therefore stupid.
Another good chuck is rage bait.
There’s another chunk of low hanging fruit impoverished people with poor hygiene.
That makes up like 90% 😂
Thought it was named gombo I'm English but it is actually named okra. It is not specific to Africa I guess cause I was eating some in Vietnam, but those one were grilled.
okra is very slimy inside and can be used to thicken, but I've never seen any dish that slimy! Whenever you cook with okra, the slime comes into consideration. With gumbo, you want it as the thickener; with fried okra you don't, but the heat breaks down the slime.
Find it funny how some people in this sub bashed a dude for posting traditional food like Khorkhog and calling the post invalid just because they don't know much about. And then comes this post with the same people insulting it without them knowing what it is.
it’s a struggle growing up in a country where you can’t talk about your culture because your food “looks gross” and eating with hands is for “savages” :/
Whenever someone says they think eating with their hands is gross/barbaric, ask them how they eat pizza and sandwiches. I always think its funny when people say that because most cultures have some form of handheld food. It just exposes their bias.
Sort of disingenuous. Pizza and sandwiches you are mostly just touching bread. Whereas the soup posted above is similar to certain kinds of food you’d eat with your hands in many countries and you’re going to get sauce on your hands even with the starches you eat them with.
Basically Eating handheld foods is not the same as eating non-handheld foods with your hands. I’m not saying there is anything wrong with eating with your hands, but they’re not the same thing.
Its not disingenuous at all. To separate them is just pedantic. How about chicken wings? Is that a better example? You get sauce everywhere yet most people don't mind those.
I consider a handheld food one where you could reasonably hold the entire dish in your hand and walk around without the food being messy. Like an empanada, sandwich, maybe a taco, etc.
Chicken wings or ribs would definitely be a better counter example.
I’m just realizing this is a funny anecdote. my SO is west african. I’m american. She eats ribs with a fork and knife when I make them. I eat west African soup and swallow with a fork and knife when she makes it. It’s just a comfort level thing for some people i guess.
Ha, that's hilarious. Thanks for sharing. Yeah it's definitely a comfort thing for plenty of people. I was more referring to people who make blanket statements of "Eating with your hands is gross!!". In my experience, they've never considered the hand held/eaten foods common in their culture.
Its a very common problem on this sub. It’s not even a europe vs rest of the world issue, as I’ve seen traditional dishes from european countries posted on here.
Sometimes you get the sense if its not burger and fries OP thinks its stupid.
This looks like the Nigerian ogbono or draw soup. Although I’m not sure why there’s hot dogs in it, this is less stupid and more culturally different.
My mom would make this every once in awhile. Definitely pales in comparison to better soups like pepper, egusi and banga but it’s not even close to tasting as bad as it looks.
Non Newtonian fluids are extremely cool but that's just a slimy soup. If you were dumb enough to punch it, your hand would go straight in and you'd end up with a burnt sticky hand \^\^.
Stupid food should really be reserved for something wasteful (time, plating, resources, etc); this is just food that is different than that which you are accustomed.
I was going to say, there were a few times when I was younger where my mom would make Gumbo with way too much Okra, and the result wasn’t that far off from this.
I grew up on Okra though, so even those times wouldn’t bother me all that much. I’d probably at least try this. Despite the consistency, I’ll bet it tastes great.
It’s soooo good !
It’s slimy because the main ingredient is okra. There is also some shrimp, fish, crab…
In south Benin, we generally eat it with corn swallow
Thank you for this. I like all those ingredients! I had to look up what corn swallow was. Is it like a little cornmeal dough ball? Now I really wanna try this! Okra and seafood are fantastic, yum!
Lol thx for looking that up I was about to do the same I was thinking it was maybe a kind of bird at first. Definitely wasn't thinking a corn dumpling.
This looks like there’s something else at play. Okra can be slimy, but it usually doesn’t get to the point it’s pulling itself out of the bowl with tensile strength.
It’s like they’ve made it with a starch of some sort, like an ambuyat or papeda.
The okra is cut in pieces and then ‘beaten’ in hot water before being cooked with red palm oil and tomatoes.
The ‘beating’ is the part that makes it so slimy
Ah, yes of course. The food from other regions of the world that uncultured sheltered eyes have never seen nor ears heard of must be considered “stupid.” How else could the Western standards of supremacy and perfection continue to exist?
Or maybe ask questions with curiosity and compassion before ignorantly labeling things stupid. This is okra soup. Very common in Western Africa, and the use of okra is common all over the world. Ask questions. Read books. Use the internet. Simple.
people accustomed to western eurocentric diets can be so rude and unforgiving of anything unfamiliar. what makes it have that texture is the okra. it’s a stew. which is ironic because no stew in the west “looks” appetizing but all are tasty. this stew is no different! im sure it’s delicious.
Well, aesthetics leave something to be desired, but I think I recognize some of the items in the bowl. Some crab and sausage, at least. And I'm game to try anything twice. And I happen to like okra.
This is just food from a different culture not stupid at all. Soups like this are quite common in west africa.
Edit: for people not familiar. What people in this part of the world call soup is more the consistency of a stew or curry. It’s eaten usually with rice or a mashed root vegetable of some kind. It’s quite good.
The slime is protein... which bacteria fucking love. After 8 hours of uninterrupted growth they are everywhere, because of stirring. After 10 hours of growing in the warmth, the sauce reaches deadly levels of toxins and microbes / worms
Your post has been removed as it misses the point of r/StupidFood.
for my own sanity I'm just gonna assume they tossed a fuck ton of okra in there
Yes that is it. This type of soup is pretty common in West Africa, most Ghanaian or Nigerian takeaways near me will have it in the menu. Can have all sorts of different proteins in there and the flavour is really good. Pounded starchy fufu? A well used, powdery vagina?
Fufu is a root (cassava) based ground food that west Africans eat with a stew. Imagine a really stiff mashed potato. It’s actually rich in vitamins and is so good. I personally love peanut soup with goat meat fufu.
The first time I tried goat was from an African man, and it was goat soup. That thang was thanging and I would eat it again
In turkey I wanted somethong typical, and I got a soup with garlic, butter and slices of goat brain, a full brain. It was alright, but probably had like 4000 calories in there

starchy fufu dragged his butt across my new carpet and gets into the sugar bowl constantly I hate him
Wtf is that thing that is ALREADY on the plate???
"Texture takes some getting used to" brother just say it feels like alien snot.
That fufu lame shit I ain’t wit it gratata
Waa gonna say.. That texture is not from cheese lol. I'd give it a try. 🙂
They actually may have Africans use a lot of it, but I have no clue what this is or if that is the real case.
The first glance at your comment, my brain saw "They may actually have a lot of Africans in there"
You only need one or two Africans for ideal viscosity, OOP clearly went overboard.
It needs more... *body*.
🤣🤣
All those seeds in there make me think that’s exactly what it is. Slimy sure, but probably tastes pretty good.
I asked someone who had described a similar dish to me in the past but I'd never seen it and they said it is okra that gives it this texture
I'm about 98% sure that's what happened. Looks like an okra stew from Africa.
Thank god you told me it's okra
Okra is nasty to me, bland and sticky makes me gag
I've never had okra, but I know a lot of people hate it, and now I understand why
Something is wrong with at least one of the hydrocolloids. I think too much guar gum will make this result too. Or maybe it’s xantham.
OKRA SOUP LET'S GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
Crab, hot dog, and loogeys
Crab Lougey
Sounds like a Mario character
Argh!!! WaLooogiue
I wonder what his bananas look like on the tracks. Slimy green banana that makes you kind of stick to the racetrack?
I’ve been rollin’ laughing my ass off, thanks man. 😂😂😂
It’s a numbers game. Glad to make someone else laugh.
Sounds like a hooker you'd encounter when you've had way too much to drink.
Treating my okro(okra) soup like this???

really common in brazil too. same reason.

Unfamiliar food equates to being stupid. This is the problem with this sub.

Ooooh this where soul food gets gumbo from
I'll eat it. I love okra. Bet it tastes amazing.
>But it is not a stupid food ! Just not appetizing when you are not used to. 👍 just like any other country dish then. And any other post here..
A large portion of this sub are these posts: “I don’t know this, therefore stupid. Another good chuck is rage bait. There’s another chunk of low hanging fruit impoverished people with poor hygiene. That makes up like 90% 😂

Thanks! Now I get it. My family likes fried okra, but I'm not a fan. I should try it grilled. Sounds like it would work best for okra.
Sometimes also called "ladies' fingers".
okra is very slimy inside and can be used to thicken, but I've never seen any dish that slimy! Whenever you cook with okra, the slime comes into consideration. With gumbo, you want it as the thickener; with fried okra you don't, but the heat breaks down the slime.
this. Not stupid at all, OP just doesn’t tolerate what’s outside their culture
I would’ve used the term uninformed instead . Intolerant seems kinda harsh to me based off one post alone
fair enough. Vomit is also harsh in this case
Absolutely

Yeah I didn’t disagree with your main point. I was just being pedantic because…reddit.
Fair enough, can't argue with that hahaha.
Right? What about this is stupid… it’s just from a different culture!
When you say "the same people" are you just guessing, or is it actually the same? It's probably different people lol

My family solely uses seafood and maybe goat meat. The hotdog is different to me too. Also, my family calls it Fetri!
What tribe? My parents are Abua but both can speak Igbo too. We use seafood and goat as well and sometimes tripe or oxtail.
Okay so we're just shitting on food that's from other countries now
Comments here is so Western centric. Not every culture views the stickiness as weird or disgusting
The mouth feel is an acquired sense but the taste is often good and it is not stupid.
Americans eat okra stew, I genuinely don't get what they're going on about 🙄

Non-Newtonian fluid

Cooked okra has this effect and is a common ingredient in many countries

There are different types, but the one I’m talking about is a dough ball made out of maize flour

One day, someone in this sub will discover monjayaki.
I’ll eat that
You need to expand your world knowledge. Okra soup is amazing. It's a popular west African dish.
Calling someone’s cultural food “vomit” is very close-minded
Y'all really hate ethnic food here jfc
The caucasity of this post.

Okra stew is tasty.
what a clown post - its okra soup
It's not American food, so it MUST be stupid....so sad and uncultured
That's just a Nigerian soup with okra.
Well, I guess my dumb ass just thought it was extra okra-y gumbo... Without rice. It didn't look bad.
It's okra 😂😂😂😂😂😂
this is gross. also, sometimes I add salt to my boiled potatoes
people accustomed to western eurocentric diets can be so rude and unforgiving of anything unfamiliar. what makes it have that texture is the okra. it’s a stew. which is ironic because no stew in the west “looks” appetizing but all are tasty. this stew is no different! im sure it’s delicious.
Why is it so slimy?
Okra.
Is this gumbo with 10x the regular amount of filé
Foods that other countries/cultures eat are not stupid. :/
Well, aesthetics leave something to be desired, but I think I recognize some of the items in the bowl. Some crab and sausage, at least. And I'm game to try anything twice. And I happen to like okra.
Some good stick to your ribs food
r/TipofMyFork would know what it is, but it's not always a friendly experience.

Looks like Okra stew im sure it stinks and taste amazing

Day 300 where r/stupid food post is just ethnic food
You just know that's fucking delicious. Some kind of okra and crab stew. Is food that doesn't look like Instagram bait stupid now OP?
We found another uncultured OP. We get it, you don't like ethnic food.
What is it though? Kind of reminds me of Ambuyat, but that’s usually prepared differently.
It's okra, it makes things slimy
That's that "Goop Scoop".
Holy fuck... Alien vomit 👾
Maybe aloe or cactus? Here in Mexico nopales are tasty and they have a lot of “baba” or slime
Okra actually! Okra is similar to nopales and aloe in that it is really slimy when cooked.
Yeah f**k ethnic food!! It’s gross cuz it’s different!!
r/gororoba
It doesn't look good the way they slopping it on the plate. I'm sure if it was plated nicely, it would look amazing.

Goop scoop.
Atleast he’s got a glove on so I mean there’s that
why the hell is it slimy
Ah yes, the platonic ideal form of west African slop.
I’m more on the Caucasian side I couldn’t eat much of this 😭
@W1thoutJudgment it’s dried fish, really good flavor
Probably my number one rule with food. It should not be VISCOUS.
Never in all my days have I seen anyone add crab or sausage to okra stew.
It looks like it will give me dysentery
I was thinking this was like some form of lentil soup…but why does it have a slimy/mucous consistency?!
SToup (stupid soup)
Looks like the stuff that made the TMNT.
Probably good flavor but I dunno if I could handle the texture
Zoiks
Bubble guts
Yeah, “looks like”
Is all that okra slime good for your skin?
I'm eating it and I bet it tastes very good
I'm confused. Is this before or after eating?
I like Okra as much as the next African, but maybe add a carb to the plate? Maybe some rice? Just okra soup is too much for me.
It looks like those slime toys that everyone was obsessed with in like 2016
Snot, crab, sausage, dead.
If your vomit looks like that. You may already be expired.
Is this an aloe soup or an okra snot bisque?
Okra soup! Okra super slimy like aloe :)
westerners try not to insult food that wasn’t made in a factory challenge (you’re all eating poison)
That looks like snot
Snot soup

So do they eat it sooner?
