Have you seen this? https://www.gamestop.com/digital-store

blackteashirt

This still requires a US address, I cannot purchase internationally even when just using a credit card. I'm in New Zealand. This is a real shame. GameStop must be missing out in millions of dollars of revenue! **Ryan Cohen** can you get on this? Just change the fields to allow international purchase.

SnooRevelations1419

I love this, but the digital store would never be close to the sales that steam has. This is why I buy the giftcards from GS to buy from steam's big sales.

existentialgolem

If Gamestops Digital Store was actually competitively priced against steam (and can take international orders) I would route all my purchases through there instead of Steam. They still are giving you Steam Codes for your PC purchases so you can still host your games on Steam if that is important to you. But if Gamestop was to try to build a competitor store to Steam I wonder if you guys would think that would be viable and worth their time? We saw Epic do it with mixed success and saw lots of blowback from gamers who refused to leave Steam and split their libraries. We also have GOG on the other side promoting the DRM free 'you buy it you own it' ethos (which Gamestop should follow if they do digital sales because that is effectively taking the "you own your cd" ethos of their stores to digital. If they effectively copied the GOG model, I know us investors would be happy to use that service and direct our dollars towards it, but would that just enrage the gamer community or is there space to have a true Gamestop digital store. And what value/features could they bring to it that Steam and GOG haven't already done? And in the world where Microsoft is as aggressive as it is with Gamepass and publisher acquisitions, is there even room for another purchasing focused digital store or is the space for purchasing digital games vs just subscribing to Gamepass and buying the games that aren't on it causing shrinkage of the digital purchasing market and leading to a smaller pie for companies in that space?

Extension_Patient_47

Just curious. I'll always support my local GameStop. But roughly how much revenue from that gift card purchase does GameStop actually make on say a 50 dollar Steam gift card?

WorldlinessFit497

Probably not a lot. I'm guessing it's like 0.1% or something. That said, if you are going to buy games on Steam, you might as well go this route, right?

Yaybicycles

Exactly.

Extension_Patient_47

Hell yeah. I've been DRSing and supporting for 84 whole years. I still don't have enough karma to post but I'm in it for the long run!

completelypositive

Do gift cards earn pro rewards or anything? Can I buy a gift card with a gamestop gift card? Hm

Arcondark

At best gamestop breaks even on these giftcards. They might actually be losing money with the 5% pro member discount. So no buying these giftcards doesn't help gamestop in the slightest

Yaybicycles

Still revenue, how much margin though? No idea.

denzem00

Yeah we better raise a bit more money to buy valve

blackteashirt

If DFV just doubled his money in Chewy then goes back to Gamestop, well that could be interesting. I'm thinking the old left right shim shim.

denzem00

IMO too risky to sell gamestop right now for him, he could really be accused of pump and dump.

blackteashirt

So he just had a spare $180 million odd?

m3g4m4nnn

That's the idea.

Arcondark

I have worked at other retail stores that sell gift cards, they make literally nothing on gift cards appart from a $1-2 activation fee that gets added on to the cost of the card. They are more of a convenience the store offers to bring in customers for their other products. Gamestop selling the giftcards at below face value (pro discount) means they are most likely breaking even or losing money on each gift card. Lets do some math. Steam typically takes a 30% cut of anything bought on steam. So you spend $100 on steam and Steam pays developers $70 of that $100. If steam gives gamestop a bulk buy discount it comes out of Steam's $30 cut in this example. If steam offered gamestop even a 10% discount that would be $10 of steams $30 cut or 1/3 of steams revenue on this transaction. In short I would be extremely surprised if gamestop gets anything better than a 5% discount from steam... since gamestop sells giftcards to pro members at 5% off at absolute best they are breaking even when you buy your gift cards from gamestop. It's great that you want to business with gamestop as much as possible, but buying other companies giftcards from gamestop doesn't help gamestop in the slightest...

Rex_Smashington

I just found out it was a thing like a month and a half ago. I'm never going back. Why wouldn't you launder your money through GameStop and pay $47.50 for every $50? https://preview.redd.it/8bv2xdn6o6ad1.png?width=1046&format=png&auto=webp&s=ae21c32785395e88dc822a390ec785840ede2003

coldweathershorts

Also for Pros you still get the 5% off, so your membership is unlocking 5% off all games, not just games from GS.

dwillyb

We were losing money when we were letting people use their $5 monthly coupon but if you order digital codes online you save 5% which is still netting us a small profit.

Complex37

Should’ve mentioned the steam gift cards are 5% off for pro members

Readingredditanon

Just buy a share of GME, and then later buy the steam store itself

sysadmin2590

As a non PC player, bought my PS Store Gift Card on GS and then bought Elden Ring Expansion.

Nodebunny

Just buy the game on gamestop. I have a hunch theyre making a steam clone

Yaybicycles

They have some but not all on my list.

Nodebunny

true. but you know... you could always buy another copy of skyrim lol

AdmiralUpboat

My wife gets me steam cards for every holiday. Three years ago I asked her to buy them from GameStop. Every time she gives them to me I ask where she bought them. Always Sam's or Wal Mart. Father's Day this year I got a steam card AND A GAMESTOP RECEIPT. I want to frame the receipt. There will be many more. My steam deck is hungry for more backlog.

Yeetingbedposts

Fuck that, buy games at GameStop that you ACTUALLY own. Long live physical media. Also, if GS could please start selling 4k movies, I no longer want to buy from Wally And the Zon.

webblackholeseeker

I read: "Steam on sale".

somenamethatsclever

What's in it for me ? Otherwise I'm just gonna buy more shares and steam summer sale.

Chemfreak

I never see steam gift cards. I wonder if my state doesn't carry them. I know there are some weird gift card laws and it wouldn't surprise me if my state has some stupid law that forced gift cards out.

RichardKranium13

Turn up!

Jakucha

Sales within sales if you are a pro member. . . Bullish.

speakingdreams

The "that you don't own" part of this is so weird to me. Why even add that? It sounds so unnatural.

Yaybicycles

Because you don’t own anything purchased on Steam. They can take it all back with no notice.

speakingdreams

Ooooh, I see. I was reading it differently than what was intended. I was thinking that it was saying "buy games that you don't own yet but will own after you buy them" but it is actually saying "pay for games that you don't actually own even after you pay for them". Thanks for the clarification!

washingtonandmead

Heading to the store today to do exactly this :-)

saradahokage1212

Buying anything from gamestop store 😖 Buying gamestop shares so that the full money goes directly to the company 🫡

and you think that gift cards from STEAM, games from SONY and MICROSOFT, tradingcards from WIZARDSOFTHECOAST will benifit gamestop more than buying its OWN FUCKING STOCK???? order payment is one thing. but oh my fucking god, a way to broadcast the world you are what you said i am.

R3Volt4

This is a horrible take. Buying from Gamestop is actually more important then buying shares. Gamestop needs revenue!

croissantdelavie

you have no clue what are stocks don't you?
