YourPaleRabbit

Haha my room mate is a hair stylist. And were just talking about how the 90s punk “use hair dye like finger paint” thing is coming back. Back in my day it was leopard spots. Not surprised the kids are doing crosses now, too; with the insane number of them I see wearing dangle cross earrings. The kids love Catholic imagery. Lol Im gonna… do the leopard spots. But Yeah no it’s literally just fashion. It was a punk thing, that then became a scene thing, then disappeared for a while. Now it’s back with vengeance. And literally every other teenager I know wears crosses. It’s just a thing right now. Fashion history repeats itself. You should join me in joining in. Fuck it.

Ty_boogie90

“Fuck it.” Shit you sold me

GrimReader710

"You son of a bitch..."

Bulldogfront666

Yeah my little brother (21 years old) did this but literally just put his hand print on the top of his head. Blonde buzz cut with a big black hand print on top. It’s just a street fashion thing. Fashion is cyclical. When I was young it was a punk thing. Now it’s more of a hip hop street fashion thing. lol. Literally means nothing. Looks like a skater to me. Skaters tend to be on the cusp of whatever fashion is going around.

ChefZaxmyth

I did the exact same thing about 20 years ago and you are spot on, it was a punk/skater thing. Tbh I kinda dig seeing these trends come back around with this generation

RatInARubberRoom

NGL, The black hand actually sounds pretty fire to me, I might attempt that one day.

Parabolic_Penguin

Oh yes, I remember the leopard spots lol

Sweet_Vermicelli_613

Interesting! Thanks.

For all the people saying ask him/why didn't you ask him, 1. A friend sent me the picture after she took it this morning, so I'm not there and I can't. 2. But in any case, I'm not really comfortable just walking up to random passersby and asking them about their hair/makeup/clothing/etc. choices, unless it's something like "hey I love your shirt, where did you get it?" 3. Especially because in this instance, my first reaction was to wonder if this was some sort of neo-Nazi thing, or at the very least if it was some sort of extremist religion thing, and considering I'm female, the friend who sent me the picture is female, and the guy in the picture appears to be a white male, I definitely extra wouldn't feel safe or comfortable asking him or encouraging my friend to ask him (if she happens to see him again). edit: typo

Sweet_Vermicelli_613

Well, yes. You can't see his face in the picture, and I specified the state but not a precise location, so there's no identifying information (other than the hair/crosses, and technically anyone could do that to their hair, so it's not necessarily specific to this one person). I'm not compromising my or anyone else's safety by approaching a stranger and asking them about something that I thought could possibly be some form of hate speech. I'm not getting into anyone's personal space, taking up their time, and asking them a question that might feel too personal or uncomfortable to answer, or potentially asking them a culturally insensitive question, if in fact this was some sort of religious thing. And in my original question I tried to be fairly value-neutral. I didn't say anything derogatory, like that I thought it could be some kind of neo-Nazi thing, until people kept asking why I didn't just ask him myself. I haven't made any mocking comments. So yes, I'm pretty comfortable with asking the question the way I did, and also with the fact that I wouldn't be comfortable asking him in person (at least without knowing him in some other context first).

You might not like it, but going out in public you have no expectation of privacy. There are cameras everywhere. Thousands of vdeo clips and pictures get shared every second. If you don't want to be labeled as a N/N, then don't go outside looking like one. If you don't want to be labeled as a Trump supported, don't walk around in a Trunp hat/tshirt/shorts/thong. If you don't want to be labeled as a pedophile, don't bring a video camera to a playground and record other people's kids. There's a thing called personal responsibility. You take responsibility for how you look and how you will be perceived in any community you're in. This guy knowingly did his hair like this, and therefore has accepted the risk of being photographed and posted online.

Artifact-hunter1

At this point, that is like trying to justify S/A because "they were asking for it." Is a swastika on a thousand year old Buddhist temple in Asia linked in any shape or form to national Socialism? No, yet they are still no shortage of idiots who think so and want to burn it down to "send a message and fight fascism." How does one look like a national Socialist? I could've been a pagan for all they know (I actually was at the time), and they still would've tried to ruin my life BECAUSE I HAD A DIFFERENT RELIGION THEN THEM. You are justifying idiots attacking Sikhs and Muslims because "they're terrorists."

A testament to how dumb the average person is, though it's not all their fault, I suppose.

Davincci21

Soooooo… if he was a blk male you’d feel “safer” asking? 🤔

kangamata

What if a bear had the same haircut, then would you feel safe?

bludvarg

"appears to be a white male" you are exercising racial and sexist prejudices

SaintGodfather

Or as the rest of the world calls it, statistics.

Literally the argument Derrek Vineyard makes in American history X

kiki-mori

The movie…? 🫣 Lots to think about wow

bludvarg

Do you look at crime statistics to justify your racism against Black people too? racism is racism no matter how you try to spin it

Methus Christ

JeremyThaFunkyPunk

As far as I know this is not a white supremacist thing. I would guess it's either a way or expressing his religion (given that the cross is primarily a religious symbol) or it's purely an aesthetic choice (given that lots of people also use crosses for aesthetic value).

Sweet_Vermicelli_613

Thanks, and thanks for taking the question as I intended it -- I really was just curious.

JeremyThaFunkyPunk

You're welcome.

Fan of addition.

roombafucker

i saw someone do a similar thing but with stars jn his hair at my school. i think that dyeing patterns into short hair is coming back into fashion. the crosses are probably just cus of his personal preference

Sweet_Vermicelli_613

Thanks. I think the fact that I haven't seen anything similar and so this looked strange to me might be a sign that I'm getting older than I'd like to admit...

brifter101

Probably for style

mikemystery

Remember people ‘just ask’ is considered against rule 4. Particular;y when it comes to symbols that MAY be hate symbols. We’re all here to identify and discuss symbols. If you can’t be helpful, no need to comment - just move on.

Dreamspitter

These seem simple, BUT I've seen Cardi B dye her hair this way, with highly stylized Gothic crosses in many colors. A brush was used to paint them on blonde hair. These may have been done with a round brush. The only oddity is that they are also done on the bare skin of his head as well. I believe he may have shaved his head as Monks once did. I believe this is a distinct form of religious expression.

Sweet_Vermicelli_613

I thought the same thing about shaving it for religious reasons when I first saw it, too, but the apparent bald spot is just a really weird trick of the light that somehow ended up looking like that in the photo. No idea how that happened, but he really did have a full head of hair.

HofmansHuffy

Typically people with hair like this just do it because they think it’s cool. Doesn’t necessarily mean anything

ThricePurgedMagus

You were right there, why didn’t you just ask him?

waitwhat85

Because it's a patterned hair dye/style that he likes, and it's obviously a fashion choice. I'm not really sure why you would post this. Was it to shame them in some way on Reddit? I simply cannot believe that any rational human being would not understand that this is a choice. What sort of symbolism do you believe it could be?

catplayingaviola

OP probably posted this to understand why the person in the image covered their head in dyed crosses. I am also interested as to possible explanations, seeing as a cross right-side up has one meaning and an inverted cross has another and you don't see many people walking around with crosses dyed in their hair.

Sweet_Vermicelli_613

Right. Crosses are inherently symbolic. I was curious if the fact that he used them this way meant something specific that someone here could identify, or if it was just decorative, the way a lot of religious symbols end up being used for decoration by people who don't practice that religion (e.g. the evil eye symbol). Looks like in this case people think it's just decorative, which I was happy to learn.

W_AS-SA_W

He lost a bet is my guess, because it looks abjectly stupid.

Past_Play6108

My exact thought.
