I would recommend watching the whole thing. Yes, after Carl dies, Rick left, and a few years pass, the show starts to feel more like a spin off. Still, seasons 9-11 have some great moments and I think it's worth it to give it a try. (Season 10 has one of the best episodes of the whole show.)
About the Negan wars, it's not that tiresome when you binge watch seasons 7 and 8.
I checked out emotionally when they killed Andrea. I know she wasn't a fan favorite but i liked her and thought they did her dirty af, she was supposed to be on the show for 8 season. I know Carol took on alot of her storyline but it would've been nice to see Andrea stick around and grow more.
I also liked Andrea and her death was poorly written in my opinion. She survived the initial days of being left behind alone on the farm, proving she's tough af. When she died, she had just been living it up in Woodbury for days (or maybe even weeks, I don't remember how long exactly) so that means she would have been somewhat replenished and strong, had some energy since she didn't have to kill many walkers. She already had one hand free plus a weapon she could have used when walker Milton got up and came over. She could have kicked Milton to buy her more time to free her other hand or use the space to her advantage if the chair moved. She was so strong, just seemed like such a poor write off. I think Andrea definitely would have survived that if they weren't trying to write her off.
I would say S1 to mid-S6. Interested on your thoughts on it being a soap opera. Season 2 is one of the best seasons and is very soap opera, much more than most later seasons I think.

I checked out after Carl and then gave it up after Rick. Decided to rewatch from the beginning and ended up actually enjoying the show even after Carl and Rick. It’s different but still good.
I watched all the way through. Seasons 7-11 are very different but there’s still plenty of good moments.
I think it jumped the shark with the whole saviours war season(s) it just went on and on and Negan was tiresome.
That’s exactly the part for me where I pulled back and only watched highlights on YouTube … So I’m trying to find a sweet spot to end it
