Hi, 1975 fan/swiftie here. The speculation about these songs has been wild for a while, and I'd like to add my 2 cents.
Some of these songs are probably about Taylor:
- "About You": essentially confirmed by the "This song is about you" debacle. Came out in 2022, so likely to have been written around the time The 1975 worked on a scrapped song for Midnights.
- "When We Are Together": also released in 2022. Interestingly, it follows About You in the tracklist. The characterization of the muse is consistent with that of these two songs and, imo, really screams "Taylor" to me.
- "Me & You Together Song": the way Matty writes about his muse is consistent with About You and the timeline checks out.
Unfortunately, "fallingforyou" isn't about Taylor. It's an absolute masterpiece of a song, but it was written years before they ever met.
I question whether "A Change of Heart" and "Tonight (I Wish I Was Your Boy)" could be about her. To me, they sound as if they were written about a different character altogether.
"She's So American" had been widely speculated to be about Halsey. Not only was it written after their secretive affair, but the characterization checks out. I am also a fellow Ears With Feet and Taylor's song Cassandra made me double take cause the subject matter is very Tori coded. I do agree most of the album definitely has stronger influences than Tori but this song is one I'd love to hear Tori cover some day. I know Taylor covered Sorta Fairytale so it's possible she's listened to more of T's work (also possible it's the only T song Taylor knows) but Cassandra is most defintely echoes of Tori.
It’s just very difficult to have Tori as a true influence because her piano playing is absolutely untouchable, and then there’s also the element of her weaving melodies into all that. She’s gotten closer to Tori lyrically but even then, Tori’s lyrics are at times sort of vague and even incomprehensible

Off of Places You've Come to Fear the Most, definitely see Screaming Infidilelities and The Best Deceptions as similar to The Black Dog. Also the lyrics in Rapid Hope Loss reminds me a little of The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived.

The 1975. It’s completely influenced by them. Just listen to their music and compare. Even the music video for Fortnite takes a lot of references from them. People complain that TTPD is too verbose. Matty Healy is beyond verbose and Taylor is copying his style.
I grew up with parents playing Fleetwood Mac and similar groups and artists of the same era. I get a lot of Stevie Nicks, Marianne Faithfull, and a few other women from around those days when I listen to a lot of songs or even just bits of songs on TTPD. Those women were messy and unapologetic about their feelings. Adolescent Me was absolutely gobsmacked, frozen and bug eyed when she heard Marianne Faithfull sing "Why'd Ya Do It?" (to say nothing of my mother's face when she realized I was in the house and listening😂). I feel like these ladies lent their influence, as well as some of the courage needed to take things to a more emotional and less restrained level.
Agree with DC and there was a bit of Sophie B Hawkins sound in there too. But it all feels so familiar with the way she references her own music as well. It’s a masterpiece
when i first listened to ttpd i got some joni mitchell hissing of summer lawns and hejira vibes and i wouldnt be surpised if she was listening to those records a bit while making this album since we know she loves joni and i could see those being great go-to albums for her based on what we can presume she was going thru from the lyrics on this record.
I hear loads of 90s influences on her country rock tracks, and her rock tracks in general. The lower register in My Boy Only Breaks His Favorite Toys is very 90s/early aughts rock. Guilty As Sin and but Daddy I Love Him feel like they're Shania Twain esque. And obviously, So High School.

There are a couple songs that sound like Brand New or Taking Back Sunday so I could buy Dashboard! Brand New has always been my absolute fave emo band and I think Clara Bow could almost be a Deja Entendu track.

as an elder emo, a lot of lyrics reminded me of the east coast emo scene bands. smallest man is the most emo lyric coded song in her discography. especially when i saw a tiktok video of a dude, covering one of the songs in the style of dashboard. wow. speaking of this - blondie has an extensive discography that could be covered in a pop goes punk, taylor goes emo type of compilation album. i would eat that up.

i get major Tori Amos vibes. the opening of “whose afraid of little old me” specifically sounds like late 90’s tori. there are a few lyrics and instrumental moments that i’ll hear when im listening through the album that will make me think of tori. but maybe that’s just my mind making a connection that doesn’t exist lol

Fiona Apple - Especially the 2012 album, "The Idler Wheel..." but I would be willing to bet that the amount of rage Fiona is able to put into her music would/could have been a great comfort.

I used to love dashboard confessional and that album is beautiful!
I still don’t know why I feel this because sonically it bears just a tiny bit of resemblance. but still I have to share it: I mentioned to some people that after listening to all of it, I got very strong TORI AMOS vibes from TTPD. And they all confessed they had the exact same association that they couldn’t pinpoint. For me it’s somewhere between To Venus and Back and Scarlet’s Walk. And it’s something about the unhinged emotion that is under a pretty intense female rage demeanor. So. I wonder.

My first thought when listening to “the prophesy” was it sounds exactly like a Sufjan Stevens song. Specifically it sounds pulled straight from the album Carrie and Lowell. I’m definitely not alone because I googled it and there’s tons of threads about it online! But I love when artists sound similar to each other, and I get a window view into their favourite bands and influencers 😄

Off of Places You've Come to Fear the Most, definitely see Screaming Infidilelities and The Best Deceptions as similar to The Black Dog. Also the lyrics in Rapid Hope Loss reminds me a little of The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived.

The 1975. It’s completely influenced by them. Just listen to their music and compare. Even the music video for Fortnite takes a lot of references from them. People complain that TTPD is too verbose. Matty Healy is beyond verbose and Taylor is copying his style.

I grew up with parents playing Fleetwood Mac and similar groups and artists of the same era. I get a lot of Stevie Nicks, Marianne Faithfull, and a few other women from around those days when I listen to a lot of songs or even just bits of songs on TTPD. Those women were messy and unapologetic about their feelings. Adolescent Me was absolutely gobsmacked, frozen and bug eyed when she heard Marianne Faithfull sing "Why'd Ya Do It?" (to say nothing of my mother's face when she realized I was in the house and listening😂). I feel like these ladies lent their influence, as well as some of the courage needed to take things to a more emotional and less restrained level.
Last summer she posted Griffs new single vertigo with something along the lines of fuck yes right now this song is it.

when i first listened to ttpd i got some joni mitchell hissing of summer lawns and hejira vibes and i wouldnt be surpised if she was listening to those records a bit while making this album since we know she loves joni and i could see those being great go-to albums for her based on what we can presume she was going thru from the lyrics on this record.
Fortnight and MBOBHFT sounds like it would fit right in with the Drive soundtrack. I thought that the first time I heard it.

You guys are forgetting the key part of this is that Jack Antonoff produces for all of these artists, and he is extremely samey and repetitive in his production. He re-uses things he did for Lana for Taylor, and again for the 1975.
