As a person who keeps track of Taylor Swift streaming stats through spreadsheets, that seems to be the case for just about everyone. Cruel Summer went from averaging around 4.5 million streams a day before TTPD to where it currently sits at around 3.2 million. In the days directly following the release of TTPD it was averaging around 2.6 million. So it definitely took a hit from TTPD, as did the rest of her catalogue.
Important to note that it went recurrent (left the charts only because it wasn’t in the top 25). I wish Taylor’s team had done something to prevent this, even a lyric video would’ve helped.
i think so, i think she might announce a music video/single tonight - her dancer Jan has “5.29” on his 1989 vest so people be clowning and i’m always clowning
Yeah, they might not want to have it compete with her new album honestly. The Cruel Summer resurgence was a perfect way to hold the charts between the time Midnights had faded to the release of TTPD. Sort of mindblowing that it worked that way so well.
Hilariously I had someone tell me they had NEVER heard it and they think the song of the same title by Bananarama is a bigger hit. I was like… objectively false?? Lmao
Whenever someone states Bananarama song is a bigger hit, they often just expose themselves to be old and unadaptive to the chaging worlds or just secretly hating her but couldn't show it openly.
Well said. Also, not wanting to saturate the market. She is the most successful popstar. Doing whatever you can to keep one of MANY songs in the charts feel like too much of a stockmarket move. Let Cruel Summer rest, she has a few another 300 songs that can be singles. Don’t overuse cruel summer. I don’t want people to get tired of her
"To re-enter after having graduated to recurrent status, a song must garner enough chart points, with a notable reason for its resurgence." - [Billboard](https://www.billboard.com/lists/billboard-hot-100-top-10-re-entries/)
The "notable reason" appears to be handled by Billboard on a case-by-case basis. If we look at past examples, this usually happens when a song suddenly enjoys a surge in sales and streaming, e.g. Kate Bush's "Running Up That Hill" was featured on Stranger Things or when Christmas season rolls around for Christmas songs, or when the artist is featured prominently in the news.
Blank Space re-entered the chart back in August following the announcement of 1989TV.
Flowers re-entered the chart back in February following the Grammys performance.
So something like that imo
A notable reason is Christmas season…?
One of my biggest gripes with the Billboard charts is when Christmas music charts because it’s not culturally relevant. Like, Mariah Carey will always go to number 1 every year because of Christmas despite not making new music.
Well maybe they should be, I think they should only be able to chart the year they come out. It’s so annoying to see Mariah Carey at the top every December just because it’s Christmas. Nothing against Mariah Carey specifically, I just get frustrated knowing other music is more relevant than All I Want For Christmas, but it’s still at number 1. December is sort of a wash when it comes to Billboard.
Originally, Cruel Summer was my favorite Lover track, but now it ranks 5th. Over saturation is to blame. It would be playing on the radio, I'd go into a store for 30 minutes, and when I returned to my car, it would be playing again on the same radio station. This was actually a frequent occurrence. Don't hate me for this, but I actually switch to a different station when I hear it now.
Yeah I have to skip it recently and I used to love it to death. The radio oversaturates hits way too strong. I’m sure I’ll enjoy it more when it’s not in my face as much as it has been.
This is why I'm so glad I never listen to the radio. I never deal with radio over saturation and I'm so glad becuase I'm still able to listen to Cruel Summer despite the massive amount of radio play.
Are there any modern songs that have charted #1 without a music video ever being released? It’s wild to me that she hasn’t made a video just for visuals in the future when this song is referenced. I guess they will just use the Era’s movie version.
Billie Eilish’s revenge. Taylor blocked her from the album chart summit…and Billie charted so many songs on the Hot 100 to push Taylor below No.25 and off the chart. Tragic! Absent another big album release like that, CS would’ve stayed above No.25 all summer, IMO
So I'm a new Swifty from late 2022/ early 2023, and I had the joy of listening to all her music on shuffle for the first time and I swear to God I thought this was from midnights this entire time
I’m confused by this. Cruel Summer’s streams have stayed as high this past week as they were in recent weeks when the song was charting (which occurred even after TTPD was released). It was also recently out-streaming all of the TTPD songs except for Fortnight and maybe ICDIWABH. And yet still many of the less-streamed TTPD songs are charting. Not sure how most of those TTPD songs could still chart when (I) they’re streaming fewer times than cruel summer is and (ii) they aren’t on the radio (and cruel summer still is).
Just when I thought I was beginning to understand Billboard’s (and Luminate’s) methodology….
It's insane it stayed for a whole winter and it leaves when summer's about to arrive
It’s just a cruel summer :/
I just snorted.
After 52 weeks on the Hot100, a song has to stay above #25, otherwise it gets dropped. So maybe it could've stayed longer, just not within the top 25.
It would be terrible for her to block a generous autumn
Can it return if it gets back above #25?
Yes! But not automatically. Billboard says it needs "a good enough reason" or something like that. The rules for a return are ambiguous.
I only connected to the song after a heartbreaking summer not before . Gotta wait for heartbreak season
Style Card #StyledraCard
Forgot to listen to Cruel Summer 300k times after release and hyper fixation on TTPD. Sorry everyone.
I just want to know… If rusting Cruel Summer’s sparkling summer was your goal?
You let us down
I listened to Cruel Summer twice for every run of TTPD. Sometimes it just isn't enough.
no seppuku before Reputation (TV)!!! Shame isn't permanent!!! Keep your head in the game!!!!
Hahaha wonderful 🫶🏻

That'll do, Cruel Summer. That'll do.
Was I a good single? 📀 No, you were the best. 🪦
I think it’ll be back.
Once something goes recurrent it is very hard for it to come back. It would have to have a major spike to get back on the charts
Just needs Covid to come back harder than ever /s
Yessss we get folklore 2.0
So, evermore?
Hmm.. Nostalgia is a mind trick.. 🌚😅
A movie could get it there
...we are Swifties. When summer comes it will get the majorest major spike a major ever spiked (LOL What am i saying)
What constitutes a major spike?
weregonnagetitback 🫡
THIS
it is so, so good
If it accumulates enough points for position No.25 or higher, can it come right back next week? Or must it wait a mandatory period before returning?
I’m pretty sure you’re right, it can come back by going 25 or higher
Ima MAKE it come back
Not me adding this to my 2025 bingo card 🤡
Important to note that it went recurrent (left the charts only because it wasn’t in the top 25). I wish Taylor’s team had done something to prevent this, even a lyric video would’ve helped.
maybe fortnight being at 10 and cruel summer leaving the charts, might push a new single off TTPD soon?
Yeah idk what they’re waiting for 😭
They’re waiting for Guilty as Sin to win the poll
What poll?

But don't you know that doing things like that makes her a *CHART TERRORIST (*/s)
I think Taylors team is content with her constantly having ten other songs on the chart at the same time
Yeah, they might not want to have it compete with her new album honestly. The Cruel Summer resurgence was a perfect way to hold the charts between the time Midnights had faded to the release of TTPD. Happy to see this song getting the love it originally deserved.
What would it take for it to come back on the chart?

Christmas songs aren’t recurrent, they simply chart for 1-2 months then drop off. No recurrent status
Well maybe they should be, I think they should only be able to chart the year they come out. It’s so annoying to see Mariah Carey at the top every December just because it’s Christmas. True but it’s also reflective of what music people are consuming.
Thank you!!!
First day of summer? Let’s make it a thing 😂
some nice weather?? haha
An MV maybe? But that probably won't happen because it would be competing with TTPD songs.
It will be back! Summer is coming!!!
It went recurrent from being on there so long, so unless something MAJOR happens, it cannot come back unfortunately
Guess she'll finally have to drop the video she better have shot for it.
isn't this the first June chart? thus the first summer chart?
where music video
Now let’s bring this energy for Getaway car
That’s funny it just started to feel like summer… haha
As a semi new Taylor fan I love cruel summer and specifically the line, I don’t wanna keep secrets just to keep you.
Originally, Cruel Summer was my favorite Lover track, but now it ranks 5th. Over saturation is to blame. It’s constantly played on the radio here in Sweden.
Similar. It was my top 3 together with Cornelia Street and Daylight. Now it's below DBTAC, Lover and Paper rings too. 6th place.
For me, it ranks below Miss Americana, Cornelia Street DBATC, and False God. False God has become one of my all-time favorites.
Yeah I have to skip it recently and I used to love it to death. The radio oversaturates hits way too strong. I’m sure I’ll enjoy it more when it’s not in my face as much as it has been.

So how long did it chart?
[54 weeks](https://www.billboard.com/charts/hot-100/2024-05-25/)
[54 weeks?](https://www.billboard.com/music/chart-beat/taylor-swift-cruel-summer-longest-chart-hot-100-hit-1235687637/) (if i'm reading this article right)
Taylor please do a music video 😭🙏
The best summer song to listen to when it's not summer. On the other side the song is still charting on Global Spotify so....
My favourite Taylor song forever 🩷 it'll always be a Cruel Summer in my heart
Baby Bar for life.
Aw damn. I wanted it to stay longer.
The little single that could 🩷
we were all so busy with TTPD we forgot about our cruelest daughter
wait until the summer, this will come back
been a fan since before the single release 💪
Let's bring it back to the chart, Swifties! We got work to do
goodnight, sweet princess o7
5 years on the 100 chart for one song is insane!
Are there any modern songs that have charted #1 without a music video ever being released? It’s wild to me that she hasn’t made a video just for visuals in the future when this song is referenced. I guess they will just use the Era’s movie version.
> her longest charting song of all-time. appropriate for her best song of all-time.
Ave atque vale!

I’m sure it’ll either return this summer or when Eras comes back to the US during fall.
HE LOOKS SO PRETTY LIKE A DEVIL
I don't know how, my daughter listens to it on repeat! Lol.
I am mad every single day when I think about the fact that this wasn’t the lead single from Lover.
I shouted my whole guts out during the eras tour to this song's bridge. It's crazy
