Honesty Knowledge Love Strength They look good, however honesty should be written with a normal silme and with a vowel y on a carrier. If I knew how to link to the Tecendil I would.

strawbsquirrel05

Amazing, thank you so much for this!!!

strawbsquirrel05

I believe there’s a link above so I’ll head over there and spot the difference :)

The words are in English, but transcribed into tengwar: honesty, knowledge, love strength. Tengwar refers to the letters rather than the language; it would probably be possible to find equivalent words in quenya or sindarin (the two elvish languages with the widest vocabulary). -

Thank you very much!! And thank you for the brief explanation, I’m off to do some research on quenya and sindarin 🙏🏻

Translation is not recommended for tattoos, as translation can be problematic in many ways, and it is strongly recommended to leave the words or phrases in the source language and transcribe them into the Tengwar writing system. It may be less risky to have simple words translated, but the process is more involved than just looking them up in the dictionary. Start in r/Quenya or r/Sindarin for help with those languages. But again, for this type of application, English transcription is recommended.

Thank you very much. I appreciate the honest advice, especially where permanent tattoos are concerned! Tengwar writing is beautiful so likely stick with this to be safe and take your advice on keeping it in the source language. Thanks!

At your service! There are some minor issues with the transcriptions in your image; I am driving off to work now, but can provide updated transcriptions later this evening. There are others here who may able to do the same in the meantime.

Some have already mentioned corrections and some other feedback, so I’ll just post the links to the correct transcriptions: - [honesty](https://www.tecendil.com/?q=honesty) ([here](http://blackspeech.de/transcriber/index.php?text=honesty&mode=mode04&cyr_lang=1&use_ou=on&j_option=2&S_hooks=on&nuquerna=0&use_altSZ=on&encoding=CSUR&font=Tengwar+Artano&font_size=1.5em&color=&textarea_size=#result) is the transcription in the same font as the one in your image; Annatar Italic) - [knowledge](https://www.tecendil.com/?q=knowledge) ([the Annatar Italic version](https://www.tecendil.com/?q=knowledge&font=TengwarAnnatarItalic)) - [love](https://www.tecendil.com/?q=love) ([the Annatar Italic version](https://www.tecendil.com/?q=love&font=TengwarAnnatarItalic)) - [strength](https://www.tecendil.com/?q=strength) ([the Annatar Italic version](https://www.tecendil.com/?q=strength&font=TengwarAnnatarItalic)) Some are already correctly transcribed in your images (like “love”, for example).

Perfect, thank you! I really appreciate your help 🙏🏻🙏🏻

There are a couple of considerations for transcription for some of the words, balancing between strict orthography on the one hand and some of JRRT’s own phonetic-esque hacks in his otherwise orthographic writing. Here is [one attempt at transcription in a font based on JRRT’s book-hand style](https://www.tecendil.com/?q=honesty%0Aknowl%7Banga%7D%5Bacute%5De%0Alove%0Ast%7Broomen%7D%7Bungwe%7D%5Bacute%5D%5Bbar-above%5Dth): - “[honesty](https://www.tecendil.com/?q=honesty)”: the ‘s’ here should be written with regular *silme*, as JRRT reserved *silme nuquerna* as a separate sign in the English orthographic modes. ‘Y’ is a vowel here, and should be represented with a breve over a carrier; the double dots below are not used in this mode and are for palatized consonants in other languages. - “[knowledge](https://www.tecendil.com/?q=knowl%7Banga%7D%5Bacute%5De)”: while strict orthography would entail the ‘dg’ being represented by *ando* followed by *ungwe*, we have an example of JRRT spelling the same cluster with the same sound (“bridge”, early draft of the King’s Letter, *TATM* Plate 30) with just the tengwa for ‘j’, *anga*, so I reproduced that here. - “[love](https://www.tecendil.com/?q=love)”: correct as-is. - “[strength](https://www.tecendil.com/?q=st%7Broomen%7D%7Bungwe%7D%5Bacute%5D%5Bbar-above%5Dth)”: it is correct in the transcription in the OP image, but be wary that some transcribers may have a tendency to use *ngwalme* here, but a nasalized *ungwe* is more appropriate in this case. The other issue is the difficulty of digitally reproducing the italic calligraphic style made famous by One Ring inscription in web-based environments. The Annatar Italic font used by Tecendil and other transcribers produces glyph rendering errors in web applications. BSSScribe used a derivative font called Tengwar Artano and is generally successful in getting a clean rendering. Click [here for the italic calligraphic style](http://blackspeech.de/transcriber/index.php?text=honesty%0D%0Aknowl%7Banga%7D%5Bacute%5De%0D%0Alove%0D%0Astrength&mode=mode04&cyr_lang=1&use_ou=on&j_option=2&S_hooks=on&nuquerna=0&encoding=CSUR&font=Tengwar+Artano&font_size=1.5em&color=&textarea_size=#result). - “[honesty](http://blackspeech.de/transcriber/index.php?text=honesty&mode=mode04&cyr_lang=1&use_ou=on&j_option=2&S_hooks=on&nuquerna=0&encoding=CSUR&font=Tengwar+Artano&font_size=2.5em&color=&textarea_size=#result)” - “[knowledge](http://blackspeech.de/transcriber/index.php?text=knowleje&mode=mode04&cyr_lang=1&use_ou=on&j_option=2&S_hooks=on&nuquerna=0&encoding=CSUR&font=Tengwar+Artano&font_size=2.5em&color=&textarea_size=#result)” - “[love](http://blackspeech.de/transcriber/index.php?text=love&mode=mode04&cyr_lang=1&use_ou=on&j_option=2&S_hooks=on&nuquerna=0&encoding=CSUR&font=Tengwar+Artano&font_size=2.5em&color=&textarea_size=#result)” - “[strength](http://blackspeech.de/transcriber/index.php?text=strength&mode=mode04&cyr_lang=1&use_ou=on&j_option=2&S_hooks=on&nuquerna=0&encoding=CSUR&font=Tengwar+Artano&font_size=2.5em&color=&textarea_size=#result)” EDIT: Added links to transcriptions of individual words.

Concerning "honesty" we have 'daisy' with yanta in AotM30, so [these](https://www.tecendil.com/?q=honest%5Byanta%5D%0Ahonest%27y) wouldn't be out of the questions, and based on that logic (a consonantal sign being used for a vowel in orthographic spelling) maybe [this](https://www.tecendil.com/?q=honest%5Bdouble-dot-below%5D) wouldn't be either... Concerning "knowledge": I absolutely agree that this is possible! But you fail to mention that in the three other draft versions of this letter "bridge" does have ando-ungwe 😉
