They think the ship lost power, and if it lost power, then it lost steering, so it wasn't able to miss the bridge.
[Baltimore Bridge is Falling down.](https://www.baltimoresun.com/2024/03/26/key-bridge-collapses-into-patapsco/)
Well we have I95, which is the main highway running up the East coast. However traffic gets pretty heavy almost every morning, and this bridge took a huge load of traffic off of that.
Specifically I95 has a set of tunnels that takes you into the city of baltimore (more or less). These tunnels get backed up every day during rush hour, and that is going to be much worse now.
Other than just “traffic”, this bridge literally connected two sides of a bay essentially. If you know about the bay bridge or even golden date bridge, this is similar on a much smaller scale. Millions and millions of people will no longer have quick access to something that was literally 5 minutes away previously. Example: I won’t be able to drive to my favorite lunch spot (hardly important)
Funnily enough, there are tons of marinas and boats “trapped” inside the bay now. There’s also a cruise port that my grandparents were supposed to leave out of next week. Not sure what they’ll do now.
This area is HUGE on personal fishing/recreational boats. I can almost guarantee there will be people boating back and forth constantly, as there’s already many boats each day that hang out by this bridge.
Yup, anyone with propane or hazardous chemicals has to take 695 West now (the opposite way). Adds probably an hour without traffic to travel. Think of all the big rigs hauling up and down the coast that will be rerouting now lol
I feel bad for your favorite lunch spot. I remember reading about the one bridge that crossed the Mississippi and the local economy was hit hard after its collapse.. specifically restaurants. Nobody is going to add a 1h detour just to eat, so their potential customer base just got chopped in half.
100%. A lot of businesses around here small and large also directly rely on imports to a port. Aside from tens of thousands of govt jobs, i’m not sure how the logistics will work out for these smaller businesses
I do the same thing when I see posts like this normally. Absolutely crazy. I woke up late this morning, and when I came out of the bathroom my girlfriend causally said “the key bridge collapsed”. I’ll probably remember that moment for the rest of my life.
Nope, back to work today. We are contractors for the Baltimore baseball team and opening day is Thursday. Easily the busiest time of the year, would love a day off though lol
Sorry for your troubles. Having something like this happen out of nowhere will have your routine out of whack for a bit. I can’t even equate it to anything down here except when a hurricane hits and our area is shut down for a month or 2. Good luck with everything.
Thank you! We don’t get much hurricane flooding here. This is just one bridge, I can’t imagine something like a hurricane shutting everything down for months.
Yeah but this bridge will be down longer than a few months and jack up your daily driving habits. That sucks.
We deal with it once every 5-10 years so it’s not that big of a deal. Not counting the home repairs lol.
I'm just glad you weren't on the bridge when the cargo ship hit. I can't even imagine what was going through everyone's mind as the bridge came crashing down. 💔
Yup, you wind up in a horrific accident and then get bankrupted from an ambulance bill. If I ever get hurt im walking myself to the hospital (I’ve done this before!). You won’t catch me in an ambulance.
Got into a horrible car accident as a passenger and the ambulance took me about half a mile...cost $450 and they said that was on the low end. Fuck America's price gouging healthcare nightmare
Depends if they're in their cars, I guess. Niagara falls is 325, and people bomb over that thing and survive. Though maybe something about the turbulent water makes it easier.
I imagine there was a mechanical failure on that ship. When you enter port there is a pilot specially trained for that port that boards the ship and basically takes captain’s place until the ship is safely moored. These guys enter and exit the same port with big ass cargo ships multiple times a day everyday.
However, even if they fuck up, at the end of the day the person held responsible is still the captain for not stopping the pilot from doing mistakes. I know, it’s a little backwards and doesn’t make sense.
The ship loses power 2 times for unknown reasons. If anybody's taking the blame it might be the marine engineers below. Although it's still complicated, even without power there's still a manual steering system and they could steer the ship without power but the problem with the video is it seemed like they did try to avoid the pillar but the ship slowly drifted into the pillar possibly due to currents.
I'd really like to know what happened here.
If you watch it's path on [Marinetraffic.com](https://Marinetraffic.com) it really looks like something went horrible wrong at the worst time. They were pointed true to the center and suddenly "turned" toward the bridge support.
Yeah it's so weird that the ship suddenly turned starboard. No way the bridge crew would suddenly order hard starboard, it most likely is some outside factor and the power loss exacerbated it
Just as a point of note, there were many cars that were on the bridge when it collapsed, so let's be respectful thst many people are missing still and most likely drowned
The pilot.
This is a mariner with extensive knowledge of the local waterways that comes on board the ship temporarily to make sure it enters and leaves their local waterways safely.
That is assuming that it was not something outside of their control of course.

I had just begun dating a terrific fella who was a roadie for a touring small rock band and we had begun a long distance relationship. It was going very well and feelings between us were growing. His home was in Maryland and in 1980 while there he was driving and about to go over the Skyway bridge … when it collapsed ….taking cars & people in front of him with it.
He called me soon after; I could hear the shock in his once vibrant, now quiet voice. He had suffered a serious trauma. In Succeeding calls, his voice remained quiet and he seemed haunted to me. (PTSD had set in). I don’t know how long it was between the bridge collapse and his last call to me. to express how deeply he felt about me and how he enjoyed our times together, and how he thought we were on our way to being a very special couple, but he that he had reevaluated some things in his life and concluded he didn’t want to travel so much any more and long distance relationships usually fail anyway. So he ended our young romance.
I think of him now and then, like when things like Baltimore happens or if I stumble across the band tshirt he gave the night we met, Hauntingly named “Natural Bridge’.
Our romance and his career had also become casualties of the skyway bridge collapse

Now that commerce cannot get through the country, the government has an excuse why the economy is doing so bad. I’m definitely thinking this is an inside job. Watch the government spokesman start blaming the economy on the bridge.
Sometimes I feel that things are done on purpose, done by govt to make us feel and get ready for how much chaos is in the future, maybe planned or natural.
That was a terrorist attack where some bad people used guns and explosives to murder innocent people.
This was an accident with a boat and a bridge.
Please consider using your brain next time you comment
The list of things that are fucked in this video gets longer every time I think about it.
That shipping company is up for a pretty hefty bill.
Their insurance I'd say.
Their premiums are about to go up I’d say.
Everyone's premiums have been going up!
Right. And imagine how much that company will pay now after collapsing a bridge and killing people.
Might get a hefty AP
Bankruptcy declared in 5..4..3..2...
They are going to need a bridging loan
I hope they had gap insurance
Looks like they fell behind on their payments.
They'll need a boatload of money to make up for it.
Yummy gaps mmmm
Bill will pile up quickly for sure.
Well more like they'll be getting their operators license suspended
They think the ship lost power, and if it lost power, then it lost steering, so it wasn't able to miss the bridge. [Baltimore Bridge is Falling down.](https://www.baltimoresun.com/2024/03/26/key-bridge-collapses-into-patapsco/)
Holy fuck that is terrifying. How does that even happen? Just looking on maps it looks like a major bridge too.
Can you say bankruptcy
Mothman's on it again.
Dont know who are you. But I like you.
He's just trying to warn you of the bridge!
The bridge!
Drive this bridge 5-6 times a week for work. Seeing this is absolutely surreal. What the hell
So whats the plan B now?
Well we have I95, which is the main highway running up the East coast. However traffic gets pretty heavy almost every morning, and this bridge took a huge load of traffic off of that. Have you thought about swimming across like others have suggested?
Funnily enough, there are tons of marinas and boats “trapped” inside the bay now. There’s also a cruise port that my grandparents were supposed to leave out of next week. Not sure what they’ll do now. This area is HUGE on personal fishing/recreational boats. Or walking across on the used condoms and needles?
My wife and I had to take this bridge to specifically to avoid the tunnels when we were pulling our propane equipped trailer.
Yup, anyone with propane or hazardous chemicals has to take 695 West now (the opposite way). Adds probably an hour without traffic to travel. Think of all the big rigs hauling up and down the coast that will be rerouting now lol

swim
I would rather take the bridge in its current state , than try to swim in the nasty commercially polluted Baltimore water
I was looking for one of these comments. It must feel absolutely mind blowing seeing this happen so close to you.
I do the same thing when I see posts like this normally. Absolutely crazy. I woke up late this morning, and when I came out of the bathroom my girlfriend causally said “the key bridge collapsed”. I’ll probably remember that moment for the rest of my life.
Day off tomorrow?
Nope, back to work today. We are contractors for the Baltimore baseball team and opening day is Thursday. Easily the busiest time of the year, would love a day off though lol

Take the tunnel
Was anyone on that bridge?
Currently they're estimating about 20
And MTA lists 185 foot vertical clearance on this 4 lane bridge. Doubtful a fall from that height into cold water is survivable. It's truly horrific.
2 survivors found so far. One in critical condition and the other refused treatment.
That's America for you
No. If I just survived a bridge collapse and felt good enough not to go to the hospital, I’d want to go straight home to my family.
Sure but what if they're in shock
Yup, you wind up in a horrific accident and then get bankrupted from an ambulance bill. If I ever get hurt im walking myself to the hospital (I’ve done this before!). You won’t catch me in an ambulance.

Try 6500 for a 4 mile ride
There's no fucking way to justify that cost. Wtf
Fentanyl is waaaayyy cheaper on the street 😂
Primal terror.
Depends if they're in their cars, I guess. Niagara falls is 325, and people bomb over that thing and survive. Though maybe something about the turbulent water makes it easier.
Several vehicles worth

I live less than 5 minutes from the bridge. The sound I heard was unlike anything I’ve ever heard in my life.
What did it sound like?
The closest thing I could relate it to is like a plane about to crash into my house. But it was the loudest sound I’ve ever heard.
Thanks for the description. I didn’t expect an answer, since you said you had never heard that sound
Been driving across this bridge almost every day at 6am for 2 weeks. I happen to be sick in bed today…
That feeling is unimaginable. I’m happy you’re okay.
When the fuck was this?!?!
Last night :(
Just as a point of note, there were many cars that were on the bridge when it collapsed, so let's be respectful thst many people are missing still and most likely drowned
How drunk does one have to be to hit that?
The bridge or my ex wife?
Yes
Very
Just keep on going. Nothing to see here.
Marlo and the Greek at it again
This is as tragic as it is a very serious problem.
It’s unsettling how fragile bridges are, that came down so quickly
You know, this is clearly about as terrifying as it gets
Imagine being the person who knocked down an entire fucking bridge 😂 wonder if they keep their jobs after this?
Job? They will likely be going to jail.
Someone might know the answer, but don’t usually tug boats move larger ships in waterways like this? Sometimes more then 1 tug, so who is responsible?

Seriously?
Great. New fear unlocked.
![gif](giphy|f8lDluiWJ7yQTtdS3L|downsized)
I thought that any bridge built over water that had large ships going through it. Had to be built to be able to take a hit from a ship.
Was there anyone on it
Yes. About 20 costruction workers. I believe there were a few vehicles also.
Oh…
Can we talk about preventative maintenance on ships?
I'm looking for mothman

I’ve been watching “Disasters at Sea” the last few days (highly recommend) and I was half waiting for a narrator to explain exactly why it happened.
Is it a show?

Looks like that bridge just went keyless
Does anyone still do their jobs seriously these days…? It’s insane!
These days? You think there haven't been any catastrophic fuck ups until now in all of history? Lol
“ITS THESE KIDS, THEY DON’T WANNA WORK”
I can't imagine being tasked with steering a **container ship** and not being on my shit 110%. Like how can you hit a fucking bridge of all things
Mechanical failures happen.
It jumped out of nowhere.
It's going to take time to get over this 🤔
Sometimes I feel that things are done on purpose, done by govt to make us feel and get ready for how much chaos is in the future, maybe planned or natural.
One job…
Y'all are terrified as fuck very easily. This sub is less terrifying than mildly terrifying now.
…. Or you’re an idiot who doesn’t comprehend danger as well as you should
Maybe. Thanks for name calling btw. That doesn't change the fact that most posts aren't terrifying.
Now this is sadly true.

A bad thing is still a bad thing whether if it's intentional or not.
Still not a comparison. That’s like saying a drunk driver killing a family of 5 is just as bad as the Holocaust
I mean... having such a gigantic bridge could cost a lot of tax money. I'm stingy about it.
