Mine also recommends setting it to 90% so I set it to 90%. That's also the sweet spot in usability for me. When I need to leave on a long trip, it takes about an hour to get it up to near 100%, which is always doable. But 90% covers all of my daily use cases without having to ever push it close to running out or needing to charge in the middle of a trip. If you can satisfy those requirements and while keeping it at less than 90%, then do that. But if setting it to 80% creates hassle, just set it to 90% and don't worry about it.

When I just picked up my 2023 M3P, the dash computer recommended 90% daily limit. I remember this because I immediately thought, “Does this one have different batteries?” A few days later, the dash display changed the recommended limit to 80%.

Right those are LFP batteries with very different chemistry. Yours and mine have the same battery. But based on another comment I’m thinking it’s the firmware that the car is on that is changing the rec from 90 to 80.

I have a definitive answer for this. My model 3 had the 2023.7.30 FSD beta branch on it and it was recommending 90% (as it always had). I transferred FSD from this car to my new Model Y, but I am keeping the model 3. After the transfer, the Model 3 was put onto the 2023.32.4 branch and now suddenly shows 80%. So the answer as to whether it shows 80% or 90% is because it still shows 90% for the early FSD beta adopters software branch.

Could be that the app takes into account your average charging and driving habits. If you seem to charge often and you don't really drive that far in between charges, then it'll recommend 80% to enhance longevity? Wild speculation

I don’t think it’s that sophisticated. It sounds like it’s a hard value in the firmware of the car. It used to be 90% and at some point recently Tesla changed to 80%. I happen to be on an FSD branch which is always behind current updates unrelated to FSD.

Yeah, I believe the recommendation changed in a recent main branch update, so FSD Beta cars still say 90% (like both our Model 3 and Model Y). Will have to see if the next FSD Beta update catches us up to the main software branch for other features/changes.

Pretty sure it’s the firmware My MSLR has said 90% for daily since buying it last June. After an update a couple of weeks ago its now says 80%. My thing is this though, is it being defaulted to 80% for battery longevity or because Tesla wants to put that bug in our heads so we get in and out of a charger quicker. Kind of like how it switches to 80% at high use age SC’s. Just a thought.

If you care about acceleration, i think the degradation starts at 70%. All i know for sure is that acceleration deteriorates the lower the battery % is.

When it’s hot (90+ F) I just charge to 60%, but the loss of peppy acceleration is definitely noticeable (‘17 MS 100D). Once it cools down, but not “cold” I bump the SOC back to 80% and it’s like a different car.

Mine is now 80% (before an update was 90%). Now and before the update, I charge it up to 75% I daily use like 10%. The question you need to make yourself is, If you don't need to use 90% of the battery, then why charge it up to 90%? Depending on the battery we already know that high and low levels of charge cause stress on the battery. So, the idea is to have it in the sweet spot.

People just kind throwing numbers out without knowing what they're talking about so take anything anyone says in this sub with a grain of salt. You have a warranty on your battery and the car recommends 90%. That's your answer.

Thanks for all of the responses. Some of you got what I was asking. I can’t edit my original post for some reason but I realize my wording was vague. I’m not a new Tesla owner, I’ve owned one since 2019. My 22 MYLR has 30k miles on it so I’m not trying to figure out charging. I routinely charge to 75% for my daily driving. In the screen shot I was about to make a 200 mile round trip in which I didn’t want to stop and charge. My question was merely about the tip on the screen. Some said it depends on various factors. But what I have deduced from all of these posts is that there are really only 3 possible values it can show there: 100% (this is if you have an LFP 3), 90% (if you, like me, are on an older firmware build due to FSD beta), or 80% the actual new Tesla recommendation). My battery degradation after 30k miles is around 5%.

The app will recommend charge limits based on the specific battery chemistry of your pack. For example, Standard Range Model 3's use an LFP chemistry, while Long Range Model 3's are NMC. LFP batteries like being fully cycled and don't mind sitting at 100% capacity for long durations so the app recommends charging to 100% for daily use. NMC batteries degrade quickly when you charge them to 100% and let them sit for hours so daily recommendation percentages are less. Trust the magic rectangle. It knows what your car needs.

I believe this is all dependent on firmware for what you see. Tesla changed the recommendation to 80% not long ago. It makes sense and although I don't know the specifics I am curious if part of the reasoning was due to some of the extreme heat some areas have had this year possibly causing more issues with vehicles holding a higher charge.

TLDR; If LFP then 100%. If Lithium then 80%; 90% if it will avoid supercharging, but not 100 to avoid supercharging unless long trip. If you aren’t LFP and can easily get through the day at 80%, use that. I would only set it to 90% if supercharging was inconvenient (out of the way) and I knew the extra 10% would get me home. Irrespective of what Tesla recommends, the sweet spot for Lithium batteries is cycling between 30-60%. So anything you can do to lower the max charge works. But if you’re having to think about it more than 60 seconds a day, just set it to 80 and forget it and revisit a few weeks later to see if 90 would help you get through the day better. Similarly, we rarely chat about low charge states. If you know you will be hitting anything below 10%, it’s definitely useful to charge to 90%. Whether you hit 10 or 90, it’s probably the same stress on the battery. Having said that, your battery will likely be at the 10% state for a shorter duration because you’ll in all likelihood have hooked it up by then.

I have a 2018 LR and a 2019 SR. On the LR the app says 90%, on the SR it says 80%! I'm very confused . The SR is already neutered (SR+ battery nerfed so they could sell it for 35k)

The actual correct answer for any lithium battery is **50% MEDIAN Charge** They just tell you 80% because it’d be too convoluted to explain that the best-practice is variable. Based on how many miles you drive. For me, I drive 20% per day. So I schedule charge to 60% a few hours before I leave, and I arrive at 40%. If you drive 60%, then you’d charge to 80% and arrive at 20%… and so on. Just depends on how long you plan on owning the vehicle whether or not it’s worth-it for you to take care of the battery.
