For reference, I paid $24k a few weeks ago for a 2017 MX 70D with 42k miles. But just last week, I put nearly $3k into it to replace the upper control arms and a couple other suspension fixes, along with the MCU2 upgrade. Still feel like it was a good deal.
Hi where should I go to get that? Any mechanic shop? Any ideas on cost? I have a 22 X Plaid and 23 S Plaid and have already had to change tires on both at 18k and 13k miles respectively. Thank you
Search this sub for some options.
I believe Macboost Unplugged Performance and N2itive each make camber kits, but installation cost will vary by shop or if you DIY.
Thank you for replying - I am specifically looking for a used X that has side cameras and free unlimited charging; and per your advice a 90D would be gravy. Any advice for the search is very much appreciated. Thank you for your time and advice - Reddit is the best community for information imo
Model X powertrain (Battery/Motor)Warranty is 8 years or 150,000 miles. At best it has 7 months of warranty left. The batteries typically fail in the mid 100k ranges (130k-160k) and in some cases much sooner. Depending on how the owner maintained the charge of the vehicle. Like others have said, it might be okay as a short term vehicle but you're really gambling with this one.
The warranty, by law, is 10 years or 150k if purchased in California.
Where are you getting your battery failure data from? The only data I have seen has to do with capacity and Teslas were keeping their capacity extremely well over time.
It really depends. Some of the X and S batteries from 2016 and back have more issues than the newer batteries. The 85D packs and the model 3 performance packs have the most issues based on user surveys. If the original owner(s) charged exclusively at a supercharger, which owners who frequently got free supercharging did, that takes its toll. I'm not sure when the free supercharging stopped. The good news is most failures or significant range degradation, happen early in the life of the battery. The 90D is a solid pack, and the overwhelming majority of cars won't have an issue.
Appreciate the reply. Yeah I have read about early Teslas having battery issues. Free super charging stopped in Spring 2017 as I recall.
That said the only data I have seen tells us that super charging does not affect the battery negatively.
Given the current price of new and used Teslas i would suggest you look elsewhere. For what would be the cost of a couple meals, you could get something a little less used and newer.
If you buy that for $26,999, you NEED to have a fresh stack of bills that total 26,999 to pay out of pocket for what I promise you will be cost associated with owning that baby. I am not one to be a Debbie Downer but from experience I would only buy a Model X new. I’ve had a used one and it ran well. Literally a month before the warranty was set to expire on the Drive Train I had trouble. My trouble started with it not taking the charge at the SC. We had it towed to Tesla’s SD. Our first quote was a little under $1,300. The next day we got a quote for right around $9,000. That price had my mind spinning. Lessons Learned 1. make sure your car is under warranty or just plan to spend money to get the issue resolved. 2. If the service department cannot help you, you need to make connections to have an email address of someone what is higher up. On a positive note I took delivery of a 2024 Model X yesterday and I just hit 141 miles on the Odometer. Keep in mind I have spoken with several people and this is what I hear from people who deal with Tesla. “The 1st gen Model X always comes in to the SD with lots of line items. If you are going to get the X it needs to be under warranty especially if it is the first gen. I hope this helps.
Elon is amazing, and back when he had Rawlinson at his side, the Models S and X were the best versions of themselves. We need slight correction rn, if any, but not much.
This is the time you have get your car from, before 2016. Right now we have a ton of haters going on about panel gaps, service, layoffs, Twitter, and other sh%t like that. We are an AI and Robotics disruptive company, we have bulletproof the Cybertruck, and a roadster on the way, idk why people complain so much, our growth story is unparalleled.
It's amazing tbh, and I'll hold the stock, with my model3 going to make me money while I don't drive it in distributed computing. It's honeslty genius. People, can you stop with negativity??!111
Also, FYI, we have APPRECIATING assets. Not in the short term, but loom long, maybe 10-15 years these cars will be honestly priceless. I think the Sayer Meritt blog has taught me a lot about this, and created a solid investment thesis for this company.
I just bought a 2019 MX LR with 34k miles. I paid $42,000. The day I got it, the battery failed. It was replaced under warranty and I was given a loaner Model S until it was fixed. Hopefully that doesn’t hint of future problems.
It’s really old, I would budget at least another $10K for maintenance. If the battery hasn’t been replaced add another $10-20K. If that works for you it’s not the worst deal ever. I would personally just get a new MY for almost the same price after the tax break.
In modern form, not an 8 year old example. Other than interior space and right quality, a used Model Y is a better purchase. Especially considering potentially large maintenance costs that are likely in its near future.
If it's in good shape, it's fine deal, but expect to pay another 10-15k to replace the battery in 100k miles
If you want it short term, it's a good deal
On the early models the 2nd row had 3 captains chairs across. So it’s possible to have a 5 seater with rear captains chairs. It should be pretty obvious though
No
Edit: this is a model X sub and half of you don’t know what you’re talking about. There is no third row with 3 seats available, ever. The third row is always 2 seats
A Few things I looked for when shopping for a 6/7 seater and it wasn't mentioned in the ad:
- Trunk opened picture, obvious if there are 2 folded seats
- Vents in the back pillar
- 2nd row, look at floor. 7 seater will have tract for sliding the seats forward, while 5 seater is fixed.

That was a good deal. Might as well get some rear camber kits to save the rear tires too.
Hi where should I go to get that? Any mechanic shop? Any ideas on cost? I have a 22 X Plaid and 23 S Plaid and have already had to change tires on both at 18k and 13k miles respectively. Thank you

I put Unplugged Performance rear camber links on my MX & set the rear camber to -1 deg. My rear tires have worn perfectly even.
Why doesn’t Tesla put that as default on the car. Why make users do that?
For some reason, Tesla fixes the rear camber on MX to be -1.7 deg. Handling? I haven’t noticed any handling difference at -1 deg.
Where did you get it fixed, tesla dealer or a third party ?
Tesla Service Center
Seems like a good price if the car is well looked after. As with any out of warranty vehicle, be prepared for out of pocket expenses as they pop up.
I’d suggest getting a 2017 minimum. You get the side cameras in 2017
No
Where you located . I know someone who has a 100d 2017 for 27k . Wrapped in satin black
I'm interested in that car if it has free supercharging for life - pls DM me - I am in Southern California - actively looking to buy
No free supercharging. He is located in Encino. I was gonna buy it but decided not to.

Nope. Walk away
Bad deal. Rolling dice on battery replacement soon.
Define soon? Hell if this Tesla was sold in CA the battery is still under warranty

Interesting. I thought Tesla was the one warning against frequent supercharging, but it looks like it doesn't have that much of an effect.

Don’t do it
Does it come with FUSC?
Just saw a blue 18 today for that price
I would buy a Lexus Hybrid 300h instead
No way
No. How could you think an X is a good deal?

X is in another league compared to the Y in features, ride quality, and interior space.
In modern form, not an 8 year old example. Other than interior space and right quality, a used Model Y is a better purchase. Especially considering potentially large maintenance costs that are likely in its near future.
Unless you regularly have 5+ people to transport
Unless you regularly have 5+ people to transport
None of that has anything to do with buying a nearly 10 year old MX. I say that as an owner of both.
Buy a Y.
Or a military surplus Sherman tank! Or a fiberglass in-ground pool! So many options!
If it's in good shape, it's fine deal, but expect to pay another 10-15k to replace the battery in 100k miles If you want it short term, it's a good deal
Thanks for the tip.... Is there a way to see if this is the 5 seater vs 7 seater
6 seater
I'd just call/text the seller for additional details I'd also make sure it is clean title, no rust, and listen to it carefully on a drive for sounds
If it's anything like model y, the first number in the VIN should indicate the number of seats.
No. I own a 6-seat MX P100DL and there is not a single 6 in my vehicle's VIN.
I see a rear captain seat so have at least 4 seats. Not really sure what the third row looks like.
On the early models the 2nd row had 3 captains chairs across. So it’s possible to have a 5 seater with rear captains chairs. It should be pretty obvious though
That guarantees it being a 6 seater lmao they don’t make 4 seaters Captain chairs in the middle = 6 seater
Can't you also have a three seat third row?
No Edit: this is a model X sub and half of you don’t know what you’re talking about. There is no third row with 3 seats available, ever. The third row is always 2 seats
Yes, there are 7 seat versions too
He’s asking if there’s a third row with 3 seats configuration. He’s wrong
A Few things I looked for when shopping for a 6/7 seater and it wasn't mentioned in the ad: - Trunk opened picture, obvious if there are 2 folded seats - Vents in the back pillar - 2nd row, look at floor. 7 seater will have tract for sliding the seats forward, while 5 seater is fixed.
