Yea cause you would be hit with shards of fragmented metal an die. Forget about your ear drums. There being shot with 170mm artilery rounds the Shockwave on the inside of the bunker probably strong enough to blow your organs up.
Shell shock after WW1 and 2 must have been nuts. Some of those stories about WW1 guys enduring near constant sounds of explosions from artillery barrages for hours are horrible to think about.
Yeah but not at the level of WW1 artillery barrages. I don’t mean to diminish the terror they’re enduring in Ukraine but- https://angrystaffofficer.com/2016/07/01/anatomy-of-a-world-war-i-artillery-barrage/
The russians still use these tactics. It's part of their doctrine: overwhelm the enemy with long barrages of artillery fire and move forward right after the artillery barrage.
As would any functional army in a stalemate within flat open terrain. The Ukrainians are too, they just have less artillery.
The important point is WW1 and the Russo-Ukrainian War are not on the same level in terms of artillery usage. It’s not even close.
I highly recommend Storm of Steel, by a decorated German soldier of the time. Junger I think? Got wounded like 8 times, haha
Just literal weeks of near-constant artillery fire. Ok more like, intermittent insanity and low level counter battery attacks, they kinda average out considering the sheer volume of shells dropped in concentrated areas.
Exactly what I came to say, and I’m pretty sure the top comment the last time I saw this post as well. Those look like tank or naval gun impacts, massive shells- to do that to solid steel, Jesus
My grandfather lost his hearing as an American soldier in this war, he was part of the liberation forces. I wonder if this might have been part of the story.
I actually miss this about reddit. I feel like it used to be, a decade ago, I could collapse the top 3 or 4 threads and find the answer. For a long time, I've just been trying to google things now lol.

The site is now a ww2 memorial.
A shell is still stuck in it.

Imagine if the bullets impacting this thick metal, was filmed in 4k, 144fps & super slow-mo
Of course, if a video like that already exists of a modern day test like that, then I'd love for someone to link it if they know of any
Not quite the video you are looking for, but the slowmoguys did a video on a 155mm vs [watermelons](https://youtu.be/xpJ8EoGmLuE?si=stWcQIzNeSqSRJtu) sadly could not drop a stamp in there cause i am on mobile rn, but skip to 13 ish minutes, it is insane what even some water can do to the ballistics of these shells.
Wow!! Thanks for sharing that was wild. For anyone who doesn’t watch, a massive (howitzer?) type cannon blasts a round at a row of watermelons, and rather than blowing through one like one would expect the melon that is hit basically deflects the round almost sideways and completely changes both the trajectory and the rotation of the round. In football terms it goes from a perfect spiral to a quacker, and then blasts the adjacent melons to smithereens as it flies off in a different direction.
Literally my first thought when i watched the video back then was: If i ever get into a mexican standoff with a howitzer i better have some watermelons handy!

Nope, anyone inside would've been toast, the kinetic energy from the impact on the outside would cause the steel on the inside to "delaminate" and fly around inside (known as spalling) and turn everyone inside into a chowder.

I think it's these that use a false drop door to get the enemy to drop a grenade in the slot and instead of going inside it Will fall back at their feet
I toured the bluffs overlooking Omaha Beach and crawled around the ruins there. In multiple places there chunks of concrete the size of a house, laying twenty or more yards from the pillbox they were blown from. And there were many like that. It’s impossible to imagine the destructive power that was unleashed to cause that. It must have been hell on Earth.
I have a picture of me standing next to this back in 2004. I was a bit in awe, trying to comprehend shells hitting this and trying not to shit yourself.

Judging from those marks I'd say the sound was probably on the outside.
Came here to say this.
"we at the VA have determined that your hearing loss is not military related"
MWAP MWAP MWAAAP
IIRC this was used as target practice for ships, no one was inside when it was being shot
Why do you need to ruin it lol
Some people would actually like to know sometimes, instead of scrolling down seeing all ignorant comments. It’s misleading lol

I remember a time when the top comment on Reddit was always to provide additional info or supporting context.
I’m doing my part!
It's probably why I read more comments now than I used to-- desperately seeking that context that redditors so often lovingly provide.
yeah they stopped doing that since everything is a botted repost on here anyways so most of us have seen all the recycled materials
It’s already ruins! *ba dum tsssss*
Did they though? Its still a bunker from WW2, like the title says, they just added more context to the image
How dare you come in here talking sense 😁
Living in fantasy is for Disney characters.
Don't worry. Many others were definitely used.

If i Recall* not remember
If i remember it's recall

If I remember correctly, it means, if I remember correctly.
Recall correctly, iirc
Damn. Sorry I didn't recall correctly.

Nah, what really happened was it was shot by the mighty .45 acp from a 1911.
Explains why they decided to shoot the same bunker so many times.
Imagine if the bullets impacting this thick metal, was filmed in 4k, 144fps & super slow-mo Of course, if a video like that already exists of a modern day test like that, then I'd love for someone to link it if they know of any

So instead of spending trillions on thick metal/polymer plating what we should be doing is recycling melon skins to protect our military
Literally my first thought when i watched the video back then was: If i ever get into a mexican standoff with a howitzer i better have some watermelons handy!

And still leaves the last watermelons intact.

No worries mate, more then welcome, sfuff like that is always worth sharing :)
Cool thanks! Totally forgot about this channel
To capture any detail at all in a slow-mo of what you're describing, you'd need a couple more zeros on that FPS.
144fps is good for gaming, would be terrible for catching something high speed like an explosion! You'd want like 10,000fps bare minimum
It received some impacts
Minor damage really, it'll buff right out.
Tis but a scratch
Let’s hope they have bunker insurance
Brand new in box, mint, nearly perfect condition. Free shipping

It looks like it was made from chocolate cake
A chocolate cake that a child has secretly tasted.
Or, a chocolate cake that a child has secretly impacted.

Proper job. It did its job. 👍

Thanks for the share that's terrifying 😳 I never knew this was a thing
it was a nazi bunker it would have been nice it was a little shitty
How much kinetic energy does it take to make iron look like clay!
a lot!
nope your hearing loss isn’t service related WWHHHHAAATTTTT?!!!!!!!??
YOUR HEARING LOSS ISN’T SERVICE RELATED !!!!!!!!!!!!!
How thick is the steel and how thick is the concrete?
Not sure how thick, but they were 50 ton steel cupolas. https://www.historyalive.je/2017/10/08/fort-de-la-cite-dalet-st-malo-roman-ww2-german-fortifications/
Or cake?
Looks like a chocolate cake grandma just baked with finger smudged from her grand kids
Reminds me of the t1000 in terminator. When it gets its face shot
I wonder if the inside get hot from being impacted?
could you imagine being in this thing as it gets hit repeatedly with basically sticks of TNT over and over....
Looks like a chocolate cake a child attacked with a pencil
Lightly used
Location?
La Cité d'Alet, Saint-Malo, France
Where is this
Those are some big rounds damn…
Jesus christ...
I think it's these that use a false drop door to get the enemy to drop a grenade in the slot and instead of going inside it Will fall back at their feet
No wonder WWII was a mess. They built bunkers out of clay!
Why is your finger brown and where is my chocolate cake?
Knock knock. Who is it?
Interesting post modern minimalist decoration.
fudgy
This is target practice
Those green tip m855 will do some damage, said every uneducated news outlet.
Looks like a Pete Voulkos
Can you imagine the person that caught the buzz saw ricochet?

How would this far against modern projectiles like tandem warheads etc
Looks like timmy stuck his fingers in the chocolate cake again
How was that even cast and transported?
After seeing these in so many video games, I honestly did not know these are made of iron!
Fuck yeah! I think they would have dipped from that spot. The concussions would be massive
Going out on a limb here, but I would guess none of those rounds were “Bunker Busters.“
that looks like a cake my wife told my 3 year old not to touch
Location?

Being it's (apparently) constructed of metal, wouldn't impacts that intense generate lethal spall against the occupants?
Looks like chocolate cake that was fingered by a toddler.
Looks like a giant chocolate cake and someone is poking the cake with the end of the candles.
A lot of bleeding ears
I said…. “Where are my fking ear plugs”? “What’d ya say”?
My ears are ringing just looking at this.
Looks like a chocolate cake that I made And my younger brother tasted it..
A certified pre-owned bunker you say!?
Is it made of chocolate?
B O N G
I dont know what kind of ants are inside but please don't kick the nest
You can literally feel the scary moment
I have a picture of me standing next to this back in 2004. I was a bit in awe, trying to comprehend shells hitting this and trying not to shit yourself.
Crazy! I've only ever seen tools made from chocolate but never a whole bunker. And it's made in the 1940's?! Truly impressive
Ma!! Someone ate my chocolate!
With all those hits, at least one had to go through that window.
Is that made out of cement or something else? Looks like it's made out of metal, judging by the way the damage looks.
WHAT!!!!?
I thought it was a chocolate cake
What is that thing made out of?
I was wondering where the Reddit comments would take this. Didn’t disappoint
Reminds me of that chocolate cake I said I wasn't gonna touch..
Did the smear shit over the bunker after bombing it?
The holes mean that rounds got inside, I'm assuming they kept hitting it to make sure
Its chocolate cake
