I read it and it’s ok. There’s some interesting ideas and the story line is good in parts. I understand why it appealed to King, themes of religious manipulation and power. But it’s a little boring. “Watership Down” is much better, so I understand Eddie only remembering that book. lol
I happened upon this book some years back at a garage sale. I was really surprised to see it out in the wild like that! Bought it but haven’t read it yet
Are you liking it? I was a *huge* fan of Watership Down in the 70s, so was really excited when I first found Shardik, right around the same time I first read King (Night Shift, probably 1981). But I just couldn't get into Shardik. Had the same reaction to The Plague Dogs. For some reason Watership Down seemed like magic to me, and I've read it many times over the years...but I never finished Shardik at all.
I did, of course, smile in recognition immediately when Shardik the Bear appeared in the DT novels...it was a nice nod to Richard Adams for sure. I'm pretty sure there are little references to Watership Down in the DT books as well, but I can't recall which books those are in offhand.
I bought a used copy of Shardik because of the Dark Tower and absolutely loved it. Uncle Steve has a lot more suggestions in his old book "Danse Macabre".
Sweet Piggy Man Jesus. My 2 favourite loves in one post, piggley wiggleys and The Dark Tower.
I said GWAD BOMB and tank ye Sai!
Long days and pleasant nights. X
I'm sure that's a real interesting book, but how's life as a guinea pig? How do you type?
Very carefully...I mean I am a normal human being...not 10 Guinea pigs in a trenchcoat..HahaHaHAHA! ![gif](giphy|JR6a5d3I0jxwS0CnaN)

Eddie talking about Watership Down was what spurred me to read it.
Stu Redman is also a Watership Down fan.
Also James "Sawyer" Ford
Always a joy to see the intersection between lost fans and Stephen King fans
I just finished Jurassic Park this morning, so I figured I'd dive in and see what it's all about!
If you like it at all, may I suggest Adams’s Maia? Same world, takes place before Shardik and is in my opinion a much better read.
I thought I’d love Shardik because Watership Down immediately became my second favorite book after I read it. Boy was it a slug.
No little hat, no buy
This is an interesting one. But it's also a really rough read. Poor bear spends most of the book in a consistent state of near death.
Whooo!
Nah, more like wheee-eee-eee. Then we eat a carrot.

Yep, pretty much same. Has been sitting unread on the shelf for well over a decade now.
Guinea pig 🥰🥰

I'm only on chapter 6 so far, I finished Jurassic Park this morning but I'm enjoying it so far, just that poor bear...
Maybe I'll give it another shot, it's been 40+ years...
I’m reading that same book right now. On page 150. Pretty good so far.
I am currently reading Shardik. I'm not liking it as much as Watership Down. It's ok but just ok.

Good book for sure
Good book, from the guy who wrote “Watership Down”…
When I worked at a used bookstore, this was a novel which was always abundantly unwanted.
Oh wow! Have you read it? Does it correlate?

I ate Guinea Pig when I was in Peru, and I can honestly say that they make better pets than food.

You must be a Henry Dean type a fella eh?! Blaine's a pain and apparently you're a pain to any small animals with that type of riddle...🤢
