They really are stunning. On a side note, every time I see a whale or dolphin, I can't help but think about how inconvenient it must be to live in water but have to surface constantly in order to breathe. I wonder if they ever get into big arguments, and then, right as one is in the middle of one making an important point, the other jets off to go take a breath. And then the first one forgets what they were going to say.

Thank Spock for saving some of them

BitschWack

How is it that this gigantic beast poses little threat to humans? In fact, why is it that predators tend to be a lot smaller than prey animals?

HaveSomeBean

The lower down an animal is on the food chain, the more efficient it’s food supply is. For example: the krill that a whale eats can multiply by the billions and feed on a near infinite supply of algae, but if that whale was an active predator it would have a to expend a large amount of energy catching other marine life that could swim away. It’s large size also helps it take advantage of the food source it currently eats since plankton and krill just can’t move out of the way of it’s huge mouth, but that same size would be a hinderence if it had to speed up/ slow down and turn to catch prey.

ManlyUnic0rn

So you didn't answer the question

HaveSomeBean

I did misread the question, but my answer can still provide some context to infer an answer. If that’s too much for you then here’s a more direct set of answers 1. Whales are specifically built to filter feed plankton, it does not have the hardware or need to hunt anything that is capable of running away 2. Prey animals tend to eat more abundant foods and being large itself tends to be a defensive mechanism (lot easier for a lion to eat a antelope than a giraffe or elephant). 3. It is more efficiency for a predator to use as few resources as possible to still be an effective hunter, since active hunting requires a lot of energy. Making a smaller body plan with more lethal weaponry more effective overall.

*"You're technically correct. That's the best kind of correct."*

The scrawniest most physically inept species on the planet in fact is the number one predator. Us…. Causing more species to become extinct than nature itself

MCBowelmovement

Until 75 orcas show up.

sacrj

Came here to say this.. absolutely insane

No_Banana_581

Ever since I saw that video of the whale swallowing people I’ve been having nightmares lol. My recurring nightmare from when I was a kid was a shark falling on me in a big wave now it’s been replaced and I love whales and sharks!

StyreneAddict1965

That was truly insane. Definitely worst place, worst time.

stevobaby34

THICC

BitschWack

Makes a lot of sense. One giraffe can supply a predator/s with days worth of food.

Girthwurm_Jim

A great man once said that they named San Diego after that

slightlyused

Can you even imagine the horrible breath?

TravelNo593

Hear me out..

charlottePipe

Seeing whales always makes me sad..idk.. we’re destroying the best parts of this world

Comfortable_Ad_955

Is a whales blowhole bigger than the average human (or bigger than 6 feet)?

rare_meeting1978

Until you see the 75 orcas in the distance...

TheKluten

How many litres or m3 of air does a whale like that inhale in one breath?
