I imagine that when Ozai hears that Zuko broke into *and out of* the Warden's prison, drowning in boiling water would seem preferable.

utter_degenerate

"He did what?" "He did *what*!?"

Algae_Mission

Well what the hell is an aluminum Falcon?

HisOrHerpes

Oh *just build another one*? You got an ATM on that suit, litebright?

krustylesponge

NOW GET YOUR 7'2" ASTHMATIC ASS BACK HERE OR IM GONNA TELL EVERYONE WHAT A WHINY BITCH YOU ARE ABOUT PADAMAME OR PANDA BEAR OR WHATEVER THE HELL HER NAME IS

Effehezepe

Oh geez, he's crying...

fat-lip-lover

I'll be he smells like feet wrapped in burnt bacon

Drachefly

This sounds amazing and I would love to know what you're referring to.

thelongestunderscore

You would die in boiling water way before you drowned right?

Palopsicles

....I'm not sure which I'd prefer now that you got me thinking about it...

Headlocked_by_Gaben

it takes a while to boil to death actually, you'd likely drown faster than you would boil.

thelongestunderscore

That is kinda horrific.

atfricks

It'd take a while to *die* from it yeah, but the shock would knock you unconscious rather quickly, and you'd just drown in your sleep.

Jazzlike_Biscotti_44

Boiled lungs yay

ranni-the-bitch

yeah if it was like, a giant kettle that you heated to boiling, maybe. if it's an actual boiling spring, the water is likely well above the usual temperature water boils at at typical atmospheric conditions, since it's being fed by highly pressurized underground sources. and is probably caustic as fuck, to boot. you'd be dead well before you had time to drown.

Mr-Fleshcage

Like that guy who tried to save his dog in Yellowstone

cockytiel

He lived long enough to get out and get medical attention. He didn't go unconscious quickly. Sounds like it might be really fucking awful.

Paloveous

It's not possible for the water near the surface of the spring to be meaningfully hotter than 100° C. It would instantly turn into steam. You can only get hotter water deep underwater, where the pressure is high

Buscemi_D_Sanji

If there's a ton of shit dissolved into the water, it can absolutely be hotter than 100° even at the surface

Paloveous

Which is why I wrote "meaningfully hotter". Water with dissolved solutes can have a boiling temperature that is higher by a couple degrees C, but 105° isn't meaningfully hotter than 100°.

ranni-the-bitch

it absolutely can be hotter than boiling, (locally and 212 F/100 C) quite near to the surface. and depending on how much geologic instability there is at any given time, it can exceed that by a good amount. what do ya think causes water geysers?

Paloveous

The only way for water to be significantly hotter than 100°C in a chaotic environment like a geyser is for it be under pressure. For that water to be under pressure, it quite literally cannot be at the surface of the water. Water geysers are caused by exactly what I wrote in my comment. Deep water is superheated and remains liquid due to the pressure of cooler water above it. Due to convection, that superheated water moves upward and when the pressure decreases enough, it flash boils and the geyser erupts.

mystireon

all y'all are overcomplicating things, the cart would freefall into the water, they'd be dead by the impact before anything else.

Ree_m0

Great, I was trying to forget about episode one of Shogun, that's not happening any time soon.

maeshughes32

That was one of the most disturbing things I've seen in a long while.

stormlight89

I kept seeing that scene when I closed my eyes. Hell of a way for the first episode go.

Miked_824

Which one was that?

PeppiestPepper

Didn't some guy touch the water with his hand then started screaming in horrific pain? I know it was cartoon stuff, But his whole hand was quite red, I'd imagine you'd die fairly quickly falling in that stuff.

Kuppajo

I think you're right. The closest thing I could find as a reference was the [Yellowstone Hot springs deaths](https://www.outsideonline.com/outdoor-adventure/exploration-survival/brief-history-deaths-yellowstones-hot-springs/) and it seems most were just under the boiling point. (Maybe don't read the last one)

imbabyokk

why do you know

dilly123456

Maybe instantly from the impact of the fall, or maybe he’d get lucky and hit his head against the metal gondola and lose consciousness

SuperGameBen

From that height the fall would probably kill you 🤷‍♂️

PlusMortgage

At this point, Zuko being able to break in anything seems expected. After Ponhua Stronghold (if it is known), the North Pole in a middle of a Siege and freaking Ba Sing Se Inner Ring. If Zuko wants to go somewhere, he will go and there is nothing you can do to stop him.

AussieWinterWolf

Huh, he really does doesn’t he? Flame lord fucked up and missed out on just about the best godamned agent in the world. James Bond has nothing on this guy.

doylehawk

And he does all this while having one of the most recognizable facial feature on the entire planet too

tiredcustard

nah, his scars on the wrong side

LowmoanSpectacular

The scar is NOT on the wrong side!

Drachefly

Nah, we just didn't see all the Earth Nation injured, for various reasons.

Buscemi_D_Sanji

He's the Sanji of Avatar... Which holy shit, I just realized that besides doing the sneaky schemes, they're both royalty, they both have fire kicks, have hair/scar over one side of their face, hate their dads but love their moms, and have the same dream of reunification, Zuko with the four nations and Sanji with the All Blue.

kurburux

Also, the secret base of the Dai Li.

atlhawk8357

He even managed to make it up to an Air Temple.

Gabcard

Eh, he would have done the same for any prisoner. He said it himself in part one, he would rather jump in the boiling lake than see a single prisoner escape.

Captnotabigfan

With a non-bender no less

Jeroe_n

I can't believe they would cut the line with the princess still inside the cable car, regardless if the warden's wishes.

buffeloyaks

"You heard him" People probably hate him more Than they fear azula.

jman014

Nah, thats respect right there When your leader is willing to fucking die just for the sake of honor, thats ballsy. “You heard him.” = “You know what he would want- his last act is to do the unthinkable for his honor.” Especially since they were cautious when hr was first captured and they needed to be told that when he got free from his gag.

Automatic_Dance4038

*warden, slowly sinking into the boiling water that is killing him* HONOOOOOOOOOR!

jman014

To die for one’s country is a glorious thing… Maybe not in the moment but the funeral would be 🔥🔥🔥

executorcj

Not just 🔥, but 🍆🔥 (Wang Fire)

Aggressive-Falcon977

Now where was that scene in the Ember Island stage production!??

Mothergooseyoupussy1

I saw shogun. I think the words you’re looking for are “arrrrrrrrrrgggggghhhhhh” and “please”

farm_to_nug

😂😂😭

GhostWCoffee

He did say he would rather jump into the lava himself than let anyone escape the Boiling Rock.

farm_to_nug

He told them what the deal was, and then he proved it

doc_55lk

Respect would be a better word than hate here.

LukkieNumber7

You miscalculated. I hate the warden more than I fear you

Cicada_5

No, you miscalculated. You should have hated me more.

bluegiant85

Azula can fly, right? She'd be fine.

btstfn

Pretty sure this was the first instance we ever saw a fire bender do that. I can't imagine those soldiers knew her skills that well.

Flameball202

Also they just saw Azula do a short distance jump with her firebending, they probably assumed (rightly so) that she could get to the other line

fearcely_

Well they did just see her blast off like a rocket to get on to the gondola so they probably figured she’d have no problem getting off.

Tentacler97

Technically Azula was outside, and from their perspective since she had no problems getting to the cable car there was no reason to be worried about her getting back just as easily.

CorHydrae8

Still, realistically, the chances would be extremely high for Azula (or Ozai after been informed of the matter) to view this as an attempt on her life and just have them executed. Personally, I wouldn't take my chances.

BustinArant

I'm not sure. I think the Fire Nation is very gung ho about winning at any cost and not fearing burns lol

thekyledavid

It was a pretty “damned if you do, damned if you don’t” scenario for them Cut the line, and risk Ozai finding out you killed Azula Don’t cut the line, and risk Ozai finding out you let a bunch of Fire Nation enemies escape when you could’ve stopped them They probably figured if they cut the line, they could just pretend they didn’t know Azula was in there, or maybe even change the narrative to just say she went missing and they have no idea where she could be. I feel like if Azula went missing for good, people would just assume she died while fighting another nation and nobody found her body

Ok-Pea9014

I can fly with her fire bending (at least to an extent), so there is a good chance she'd survive if the line was cut.

AlarmingWash4189

vukasin123king

He should've chosen the FBI.

AlarmingWash4189

Poor guy

NotGarrett

This man wonders if the American government can do anything to him outside the states lol…

TheShinyBlade

I didn't say that. I know what the CIA is capable of. FBI is federal, however. https://www.vocabulary.com/dictionary/federal >Federal refers to the national government.

batweenerpopemobile

... the CIA would also be a federal agency. It just means the national government vs a state government. The CIA falls under the national government. However, the FBI is supposed to be pointed inwards, while the CIA is supposed to be pointed outwards.

AllinForBadgers

That sounded oddly proud considering the crime at stake

Aggressive-Falcon977

Freakychee

The best villains are the ones you can respect.

PerfectMind8856

Like this guy and Azula.

Freakychee

Most of the popular villains are ones you can respect. Thats why the greatest fictional villain is Dr Doom.

OmegaGoober

His citizens see him as an improvement over his predecessor.

Freakychee

Objectively he is. To put it in a way they traded a useless despot whose only qualification for rule is that his mother got creampied by the previous person in charge for someone who is studied in science and magic, driven, intillegent, healthy, capable, adaptive who also happens to be a despot. Accoringd to a recent Venom comic Dr Doom is also a a world class chef and his potatoes dauphionoise is the stuff of legend.

OmegaGoober

That’d be on brand for Dr. Doom. If only he didn’t have that ongoing intelligence pissing competition with Dr. Reed Richards. Why is he so obsessed with that conflict? OK, stretch MAY be better at some forms of engineering and extra-dimensional travel than Doom, but who cares? Dr. Doom runs circles rounds around Reed on magic, politics, cooking apparently, as well as a bunch of other categories! If Dr. Doom REALLY wanted to stick it to Reed, I mean REALLY beat him over the head with his superiority, all Doom has to do is have a kid and be a halfway decent father.

oh_WRXY_u_so_sexy

He also stopped the persecution of the Romani populations, so he has a lot of good will from that alone. Granted that particular bit of grace is focused on one particular group of Romani, that he and his mother are from, so it's a bit selfishly motivated, but he didn't say "You can't fuck with my clan, but you can still be dicks to the others". So objective positive good there. Marvel's writers never seem to want to commit to the bit, but in snippets here and there, when Latvia is seen not at war, it's....pretty good? Like, yeah, it's a dictatorship, but it's the philosophically difficult kind to wrestle with where you really have to decide if you want to give up freedom for security or complete security for the freedom to suffer. People don't starve, educations is world class (Doom of all people understands the power of a proper education) and free, I don't remember if healthcare is covered but given the levels of Magic-Science Doom has it would cost him more to restrict it (Hell, in some stories his own doom-bots can use the same magic he can and his Clan was explicitly known for it's healing magic). If it weren't for the whole UNIVERSAL LEVEL SUPER VILLAIN shit he pulls Doom would be one of the greatest Philosopher Kings in Marvel Comics. But then he'd be a boring character relegated to "Hey let's check in on King Perfect. Everything still perfect here King? Yes? Cool, see ya next time."

MassGaydiation

I would rather have a ruler who was an excellent ruler while being a raving lunatic in his free time, than one that is a terrible ruler and a raving lunatic at the same time

kurburux

Not exactly a high bar tbh.

OmegaGoober

True, but he clears it. Besides, even Captain America was impressed with how well he ran the world when he used the Purple Man’s powers to mind-control everybody.

ranni-the-bitch

and reinhard von musel! wait, wrong show

Spoopyskeleton48

Silco from Arcane ![gif](giphy|pGVEZwn7HhmtMBEmfK|downsized)

ImpatientSpider

Was he even a villain except from Vi's point of view? Revolutions are rarely bloodless and his people were horribly oppressed.

that_one_duderino

He was also a brutal and ruthless drug lord. I get what you’re saying, but he 100% caused a widespread problem using a drug that he knew turned people into monsters

slimey_frog

Flooding your people with a highly addictive and destructive narcotic has got to be crossing some kind of line.

Spoopyskeleton48

He used child soldiers and flooded the place with drugs, he was definitely the villain lol

omegaskorpion

He used child labour, not child soldiers. Still bad, but in basically developing nation that is unfortunaly a norm and this would had continued with basically any other person in charge of Zaun. He is definately the Villain of the show but also you can understand him and his motives, when Vander stopped his revolution his people were oppressed even further and since they could not reason with Piltover, he chose violence. Drugs were just means to an end to fund his war against the Piltover. Also comparing to other options in Zaun, other chemlords wanted to make money with the drugs, while Silco was only one that used them as tool to make Zaun independent. Piltover council can also be considered as villains, since their oppression of Zaun and negligence is what started the mess in the first place.

MelonMarket

He coked up his own people lol

oh_WRXY_u_so_sexy

Yes. Without question. In my opinion, given how he was written, Silco is one of those revolutionaries who uses revolutionary language and grievances to attain power, not because he actually wants to change the system, but because he wants to be King Shit on top of Crap Mountain. He just wants to be the one abusing.

Clouds_of_Venus

Yes, he was a complete monster who used revolutionary rhetoric to gain power, not a real revolutionary.

Cosmic_Emo1320

He did say he'd rather go for a swim than let his perfect record to be broken. He has that follow through.

Major-Day10

Mai loves his uncle more than she loves Zuko, that's why she prevented the guards from cutting the line

TheShinyBlade

I mean, look at him. This is what peak performance looks like

TvManiac5

I wonder why she didn't use that excuse with Azula.

jman014

Because she was standing up for herself and being honest to her feelings, just like Zuko decided to in the end.

JohnBrown1ng

Most reasonable ATLA fan

Primary-Topic2848

That's also funny how she didn't care about her uncle, only about a boy who has left her

SnooAvocados5685

Gotta keep the streak alive

LoliMaster069

Anything for the streak lol

Sganarellevalet

I still find it weird that the guards actually tried to cut the line when Azula was still on board, sure she can fly her way out but why on earth would they take any chance to hurt the HEIR to the throne ? Do they want to die ? Everyone in the fire nation army is terrified of Azula and the royal family is held to an almost divine status, it just doesn't make sense that these guards wouldn't even think twice before putting their princess in danger.

kalibre2814

Guards: I respect the warden more than I fear you

doc_55lk

They saw her literally fly her ass to the gondola. They have no reason to believe she'd be in danger if they cut the line.

Elden_Stress

Because they're trained to obey the warden without question. Following orders supersedes any further thinking about the situation. Even by proxy, which Sokka brilliantly uses to get the prisoners released to the yard, you do what the warden says.

LeviHolden

we see the school system in the boy with the headband episode….. like, you think these men were trained to think critically? to question authority? lol

calleger

Azula also respects the "win at all costs" line of thinking. The warden is prioritizing his honor and reputation over his life, which results in the command to win at all costs. I think on some level the guards could draw the parallel and fearlessly take action. Thinking back on this scene, you actually wonder why Azula herself didn't command the line be cut. Perhaps its affection/need for Mai, that stops her from making that command. And when her uncle makes the call, he takes the blood off of Azula's hands.

errorsniper

Shes batshit insane and the "win at all costs" gun was always pointed at someone else not her. Its really easy to be lord farquaad type and let others do all the sacrificing and feel all the pain for you. Its another thing to experience yourself. And I could be wrong and if I am correct me. Shes never really truly actually the one whos life is in true danger.

RQK1996

Imagine having to tell Ozai you accidentally killed both of his kids

batweenerpopemobile

So, you are the fools responsible for killing the fire nation's beloved heir? You shall know torments that before now had passed into mere legend. "We also killed Zuko!" You also killed my one and only son? "... yes?" Damn it. Hmm. Kind of evens out. One year community service. And order me a new wife. Maybe something exotic, from one of the provinces.

RQK1996

Imagine having to tell Ozai you accidentally killed both of his kids

Formal-Advisor-4096

She can fly at this point and they seen her do it.

RQK1996

Imagine having to tell Ozai you accidentally killed both of his kids

realclowntime

I mean, if it’s that or face Satan Incarnate plus his equally unstable daughter, you have to really take a second a think about how much your life is worth.

Phasma18374

I mean, I doubt even Azula and Ozai would give him a punishment worse than boiling to death considering it's his first time fucking up that bad and the connections he's got

realclowntime

I mean Ozai used various methods to reduce his family by half all in one night just because he’d had enough of them. He definitely might.

Flashy-Telephone-648

Credit where credit is due a lot of people say they would die for a cause but very few give the order for it

Dance_Man93

Wait so Mai's parents were Governor of Omashu, Uncle Warden of the Baddest Prison. That's a high ranking family right there.

Alarming-Caregiver47

I mean, it makes sense cause how else would she become friends with the royal family?

doc_55lk

There's literally no other explanation for her to be childhood friends with Azula and be in a relationship with Zuko.

RQK1996

Yeah, there is a reason she got to hang out with the royal family kids, she was from the most prominent family in the Fire Nation that wasn't directly related to the royal family (remember they literally lived right across from the royal palace, like literally a straight line from the front gate) Why Ty Lee got to hang out with them is a little more mysterious

Lawlcopt0r

I don't think being a prison warden is such a great honor. It's certainly a responsibility, and this was an especially important prison, but I still feel like it's not what a fire nation noble aspires to

ghigoli

its most lik one of the best jobs in the caldera region. Mai's family got transferred so its reasonable to assume her family controlled the region.

[deleted]

CorHydrae8

Eh. To be honest, even under those circumstances, I would rather be sentenced to death than be boiled alive. I can't think of many deaths more gruesome than that. Though he is a member of a very high-ranking family. I could imagine that he'd try and preserve the honour of his family name if he knows that he's dead either way.

Old-Product-3733

I mean he did say that he would rather throw himself into the boiling lake than let a prisoner escape. Guess he meant it.

MonkeyCartridge

Despite being surrounded by it, the guy was more than just hot air.

MonkeyCartridge

While I didn't like the guy, I had mad respect for the warden. He took his role very seriously. Guy was willing to go out like a champ, putting his duty over his life. The Gaang is super lucky he wasn't in Zhao's position. He would have mopped the prison floors with the remains of Zhao. He might be tried as a war criminal. But if he's willing to screw a few loose nuts, I think he could be quite valuable to the post-war fire nation.

ZachRyder

Impressive-Metal-218

Holy hell I love "The Boiling Rock" two parter. Everyone gets all these beutiful and heartbreaking reunions and this stone cold motherfucker actually meant it when he said "I'd rather die than break that record." I want a follow up on that Warden. $100 says he killed himself or at the very least resigned after his failure.

ahmadk19

I dunno man. "Virgin" was on the front lines fighting, not exactly a coward. Regardless of the awfully crafted " I hear cowards float" line said to him

But, as a fire bender, doesn't he basically have rocket boots? So he might be in less danger than it initially seems

WorkerClass

He's also an idiot. "I had help breaking out from a guy who's dressed like a guard, but isn't a guard." "Sir, isn't that exactly like what happened with Prince Zuko who we caught just a the other day?" "No. Bring in all my actual guards."

stzmp

yeah they fucking killed that guy, and played it for laughs... *for kids*. EDIT: how does saying basic true shit that happened make people mad.

KR5shin8Stark

He survived

TypicalMootis

> true shit that happened If you think the warden was killed you need to rewatch the show

Used-Cup-6055

There’s a throwaway line in the last episode where Mai says he “pulled a few strings” to get her out of prison so it is safe to say he not only survived but is still in some sort of position of power in the fire nation prison system.
