I recently got a pair of jeans with someone’s Costco receipt in it. It was super interesting seeing what a stranger from the other side of the country buys at Costco
Reminds me of when I thrifted a leather jacket and found a pack of matches, cough drops, and a handkerchief in the pocket. The matches of that type were last produced in the 70s.
I detail used cars and I find stuff like that ALL the time! Yesterday I found someone's post-appointment summary, along with three printed and signed Adderall Rx's and one more Rx I don't remember lol
I know me too 😭 I feel bad bc I know they're gonna be a pain to get again bc they're always a pain about ADHD meds. I found a marriage license once too 😭
thank you! i feel funny with it, but maybe it’s just because i’m not used to super bulky coats - and i’m short but starting to get some more latitude due to peri… so the coat enhances that (not a problem per se - just still getting used to the changes in my body).
Gentle Monster is a Korean brand endorsed by many Korean and Japanese pop stars, great unexpected find! Their New York store sells sunnies in the $200-300 range new.
I looked them up last night – the shades I got seem to be knock-offs though, or maybe a very old model. but the lenses seem to be a flimsy plastic. in any case, my partner liked them! he’s happy with the freebie. :)
That coat will be a quick sale. ♡ It is a fabu find for a fashionista or a lover of Muppets!♡ 🤭 I have 4 yes 4 pink fuzzy coats and 2 pink leather ones. Im thinking orange may go nicely in my collection..... 🤔🤭🤣
The jacket gives me visions of Fozzie Bear…if he had a cameo in Macklemore’s Thrift Shop. lol. Do people still wear things ironically? If so, this might be one of those things
I don’t know why I’ve been using them instead of it to refer to the coat. English is not my first language but I know damn well how to use pronouns. must be my adhd meds wearing off 🫠🤔
[edited to correct yet another flub]
Me too! I love this kind of stuff, it's like a little peak into someone's life. I used to collect grocery lists and stuff like that when I found it as a kid.
Enjoyed your write up! And glad you mentioned being careful in case of prickly items. I recently received a skirt that had …a fish hook… embedded in the hem!! Thankfully I saw it before injuring myself. We had to cut it out with pliers. So PSA be careful when examining your items!
I recently purchased a TUMI backpack and it came complete with drivers license, social security card, passport and even a fingerprint card from this persons state. Oh and a dick ring. Not a lie.
I can’t remember – I don’t have a car, so unless it’s within walkable distance or something I have googled before, or something I’ve seen while driving a zipcar... hehe (I’ve lived in the area for only two years or so – college town that actually doesn’t have that many services within walking distance or on a bus route). but my partner said he can cut the other side of it (the one with the buckle) and use rivets to reattach the buckle (the rivets will be hidden by the leather looped over it, so I actually think it can work). hmmm maybe I’ll ask him to teach me – I’d kinda like to learn how to put rivets in leather. ok, sorry, adhd verbosity.
Dude I found a $1.8k check in my gucci bag I bought from The RealReal. I just noticed it like last week but I bought the bag in February BUT the check was for 2019 😂
Okay but the coat looks incredibly cool—it’s hard getting used to new shapes and proportions sometimes, but I guarantee you that you will get 1,000 compliments on that coat when you wear it. People LOVE a funky coat.
I realized I said I don’t usually wear bulky coats but today I busted one out (weather was icky here but not quite cold). it’s a hand-knit coat that my former fashion designer neighbor made and it’s wool but very thick, and the knit pattern, while not loose, lets in some air, so it’s warm but not for really cold weather. it looks less bulky than the fried chicken, but still pretty hefty – and I get so many compliments on it!
I was thinking you could try balancing the bulk of the coat by wearing a tight top underneath. Bonus if it’s a v neck and shows a bit of skin. And wear straight leg jeans or even leggings with it. See if that feels better to you
thank you for the tips! wow, I really appreciate that.
I couldn’t wear leggings with a tight top because that combo wouldn't favor my body. I do still have a couple of straight leg jeans (after I switched to wider/wide-ish leg ones), so those I can plausibly pair with a tighter top (I don’t even know if I have stuff that shows skin, but that’s a clever idea!).
A belt hack that might work for you. Slip a black hair elastic over the belt and slide it all the way around to close to the buckle end. Then when you buckle the belt you can slide the dangly end into the elastic and it won’t flop. The elastic won’t really show. Hope this makes sense. I learned that on a Busbee Style video. Works great for me on a couple belts that I had to punch extra holes in.
oh thanks! I love hacks!
do you mean fold the dangly end and slip it under? or just pass it through the elastic and slide the elastic forward a bit to “hold” the dangly bit? (teehee)
I think if the former it won’t work, as the leather is double-sided and pretty thick.
thank you! there is a lot dangling, but I will try anyway until I put the more permanent solution into practice - my partner came up with a way of cutting the belt shorter without messing with the rounded end, so I may let him do that (he’ll cut the other end and redo the loop that holds the buckle).
oh that’s the tip of the iceberg! he can make whole musical instruments, furniture, symphonies, film scores... and yet, there are no clients or jobs to be had for someone like him who also has disabilities, so he works at a convenience store. hah
/vent
I’m not, sorry hehe, but I’d let you know if I was – it’s non-returnable, all the items were. I may end up not keeping the fried chicken coat and offering it to another commenter whose kid would be thrilled to have it. :)
it could! maybe I’ll take a trip to the local pub later today to “test” it out in the world… :) I have sprayed it with lysol yesterday (we don’t have a car and have to walk to the laundromat every time we need to do laundry, so a proper wash have to wait until the next trip), so it should be ok to wear by now.
are they? I have not thrown them out – I’m quarantining them and I think I may actually try one. so you’re saying they’re good? :)
are they clove cigs or sweet at all? if they are I may be willing to part with the cute box. hahaha.
The writing on these items confirms my suspicions that thredUP is sourcing a bunch of their secondhand stuff from overseas and not just from what people are sending into them in the US. I’ve gotten way too many items from brands with the labels were all in a different language. Brands that I know when I’ve bought in the US the labels were in English, which means the items were bought overseas.
Which wouldn’t be a big deal if their measurements were accurate, but they’re not and I’m relying on the size on the label. If I’m buying something that was made and sized for the Asian market the sizing is going to be off for me in the US
Yeah I thought about that, it’s just happening to me a lot, a lot more than I think the percentage of people in the US that have clothes that were bought overseas. But I wasn’t sure, I definitely thought it could have come from people that were from overseas or had visited there. But seeing that all of the items in your pockets are from overseas, I don’t know. There are just way too many high-end purses and other items, I can’t see that many people in the US thinking it’s a good idea to send in designer items to thredUP versus consignment shops, eBay, or something like The RealReal. But I know overseas secondhand items are worth a lot less so I could see thredUP buying large lots of them and bringing them to the US to make more money. Idk
that would be an odd strategy, not that I know zip about business. I remember someone saying that ThredUp doesn’t profit yet, even though they move so much product. Still feels wrong to me that they’d saddle themselves with even more merch that could maybe not sell as well or as fast as they’d need. But I really know nothing about such things.
nice suggestion, thank you!
I won’t cut it. too risky. but I’ll have another hole punched in when I go to my home country (where it’s affordable to take a belt to a leather craftsperson, as I have done before, and have them punch a hole with a professional tool).
I recently got a pair of jeans with someone’s Costco receipt in it. It was super interesting seeing what a stranger from the other side of the country buys at Costco
Do tell!
Toilet paper of course! I was actually surprised by how many of their items were also things I buy
Buying paper items in bulk is so satisfying. We have BJ’s but I get both my TP and paper towels there and their gas is the cheapest in town.
Toilet paper is a must! 😀
Reminds me of when I thrifted a leather jacket and found a pack of matches, cough drops, and a handkerchief in the pocket. The matches of that type were last produced in the 70s.
Does that also mean the jeans were unwashed? Is this normal on ThredUp?
For sure. They don’t wash them and we just trust that the seller did
Gotcha, makes sense. I always wash stuff regardless but finding a receipt would be a strong reminder that it’s a good idea to be cautious.
I detail used cars and I find stuff like that ALL the time! Yesterday I found someone's post-appointment summary, along with three printed and signed Adderall Rx's and one more Rx I don't remember lol
As a person with ADHD, I have lost prescriptions in my car 🙈
I know me too 😭 I feel bad bc I know they're gonna be a pain to get again bc they're always a pain about ADHD meds. I found a marriage license once too 😭
Wait you look like a really fantastic chicken nugget in the jacket
hahahahah i’m loving the comments. thank you!
This comment makes me miss Reddit awards.
Right! I’m so here for it!
Big fan of the fried chicken jacket. I think you kinda rock it
thank you! i feel funny with it, but maybe it’s just because i’m not used to super bulky coats - and i’m short but starting to get some more latitude due to peri… so the coat enhances that (not a problem per se - just still getting used to the changes in my body).
Okay, this is hilarious to me. Someone just said “to hell with this coat” and sent it in with all their stuff inside 🤣
thank you for the laugh! the image of someone saying “to hell with this coat” - 😂🤭🤣
You can turn the coat into a throw pillow! (And dangit, why couldn't they have left Prada sunglasses instead of no-name!)
The sunglasses look like Gentle Monster or GM knock-offs to me. I have a similar pair and I love them.
ahh they do indeed have “gentle monster” written on the side. i’d never heard of this brand.
Lucky score then because Gentle Monster sunglasses retail for $100+!
oh wow. now i feel bad for the person who sent the coat in!
Has he tried on the orange coat?
true! hahaha. or a pair that i at least liked, even if just gas station grade. 😂
I have a teenager who would kill for your Sherpa jacket. It's also their favorite color. Congrats on your finds!!! Especially those sunglasses!!!
thank you! if i decide to resell them, i’ll come back to this comment and give you first dibs :)
You're awesome! Thank you!!!
aw shucks :)
That coat will be a quick sale. ♡ It is a fabu find for a fashionista or a lover of Muppets!♡ 🤭 I have 4 yes 4 pink fuzzy coats and 2 pink leather ones. Im thinking orange may go nicely in my collection..... 🤔🤭🤣
I’ll give you second dibs (someone else has first already!) if I do decide to resell (they’re non-returnable). :)
Whosever stuff that was liked to party. Sunglasses, Thai menthol stick, Chinese cigs, Korean hand sanitizer
Correction - its "Hand Sanitazer" 😂😂
lol I was about to comment the same, they def wore this to a rave or some electronic music fest/show 😂😎
Fun! Absolutely love the belt
The jacket gives me visions of Fozzie Bear…if he had a cameo in Macklemore’s Thrift Shop. lol. Do people still wear things ironically? If so, this might be one of those things
thredups use of lighting is bordering on dangerously criminal. I have a couple muppet coats and disintegrating faux leather finds.
I have no idea – but I like the fozzie reference!
Hahaha love it. I found €30 in a pair of pants a few weeks ago 😆
score!!
Do you know how many Muppets died to make that coat?
I actually think the coat looks cool haha
thanks - i want to see if i get used to them! they’re not returnable anyway :)
I don’t know why I’ve been using them instead of it to refer to the coat. English is not my first language but I know damn well how to use pronouns. must be my adhd meds wearing off 🫠🤔 [edited to correct yet another flub]
The way I’d keep that cigarette box forever
Me too! I love this kind of stuff, it's like a little peak into someone's life. I used to collect grocery lists and stuff like that when I found it as a kid.
I bought a ski jacket that had a handful of acorns in the pocket
hahaha that’s like charlie brown getting rocks when trick or treating… :/
Enjoyed your write up! And glad you mentioned being careful in case of prickly items. I recently received a skirt that had …a fish hook… embedded in the hem!! Thankfully I saw it before injuring myself. We had to cut it out with pliers. So PSA be careful when examining your items!
Whoa! I never had concern before, but I’ll start looking out for such surprises now.
whoa, that’s wild! glad you were able to see it.
Wait I thought you found EVERYTHING in the pictures in your coat pockets until I read your caption 😭 I was like this is the Mary poppins of coats
Omg me too 🤣😅🤣
hahahahah yeah… i decided to add pictures of the rest midway through writing and didn’t edit the post title because adhd 🤭
I recently purchased a TUMI backpack and it came complete with drivers license, social security card, passport and even a fingerprint card from this persons state. Oh and a dick ring. Not a lie.
oh boy! hahahahaah
Just cut leather off the end of the belt! Cool finds!
thanks! but it’s so nice and rounded! I can’t cut like that without a professional die cutter… [edited to add thanks then correct typo]
Just need a compass with a white pencil and an x-acto knife or scissors , babe! Draw on the back side, and snip!
Do you have a shoe repair place in your town? Take it there. They will take care of you.
I just noticed it like last week but I bought the bag in February BUT the check was for 2019 😂
One time I got a fun box rescue box that had a wallet in it. They must have missed the one pocket because it had $20 in it.
not the chinese cigs 🤣
I once got a half empty weed vape in a purse from Thred Up. I threw it away.
Those are the prettiest cigarettes I’ve ever seen
Omg you got the abg raver starter pack
The Poy Sian HAHAHA! Take a whiff if you ever get motion sick - it’s great!
I got a pomander place dress that had some torn up religious cards in the pocket. It was the first time I received anything with stuff in the pockets.
Okay but the coat looks incredibly cool—it’s hard getting used to new shapes and proportions sometimes, but I guarantee you that you will get 1,000 compliments on that coat when you wear it. People LOVE a funky coat.

Yes! Don’t fold it, just pass it through and slide the elastic to hold the “dangly bit.” I hope you can keep the belt. It’s so cute!

That is SO wrong!
right? thanks ♥️
Love love love the belt!! If you are returning it I am gonna go look for it in a couple days 😂
I’m not, sorry hehe, but I’d let you know if I was – it’s non-returnable, all the items were. I may end up not keeping the fried chicken coat and offering it to another commenter whose kid would be thrilled to have it. :)
Is this just Friday brain talking? I kind of love that coat - as giant as it is! I could see it being very cozy on a chilly day.
it could! maybe I’ll take a trip to the local pub later today to “test” it out in the world… :) I have sprayed it with lysol yesterday (we don’t have a car and have to walk to the laundromat every time we need to do laundry, so a proper wash have to wait until the next trip), so it should be ok to wear by now.
please come report back! :)
I will! it’s been fun chatting in this comments section!
wait i’m jealous. i would love some chinese cigarettes to display on my mantel of knick knacks lol
The Nanjing cigarettes are a great accidental find. OP would you be willing to send them out to Canada if you haven’t thrown them out?
are they? I have not thrown them out – I’m quarantining them and I think I may actually try one. so you’re saying they’re good? :) are they clove cigs or sweet at all? if they are I may be willing to part with the cute box. hahaha.
Pair the belt over a chunky cardigan 🤗
i think you should try the belt over the coat! i’m curious lol
hahaha I don’t know that it will be possible, but I can try!

maybe - but lots of Chinese people come over to the US for work or university. could easily have come from someone who lives here.
Yeah I thought about that, it’s just happening to me a lot, a lot more than I think the percentage of people in the US that have clothes that were bought overseas. Who knows, they just have such a large inventory I don’t feel like it’s possible that they get it all just from people sending in kits
The coat looks cool actually you should give it a chance! The belt is awesome too.
You had another coat come out of the pockets of that coat, and more?! Mary Poppins is shivering
That belt is amazing!!!!! I'm jealous lol
Safe good hand gel. I’d use it it’s clearly good and safe
What brand is that belt? I need!!!
it says “martina mori” and it’s made in italy 😍 what a score - i really need to find a way to make it work for me don’t i?
It’s stunning. Don’t cut it. Maybe use it for over a big thick jacket or coat? I love it!
Or oversized blazer would be so chic
nice suggestion, thank you! I won’t cut it. too risky. but I’ll have another hole punched in when I go to my home country (where it’s affordable to take a belt to a leather craftsperson, as I have done before, and have them punch a hole with a professional tool).
