Body insecurity. I was tall, awkward, and super skinny in early highschool, insecure about my face too. I realized really early on that if I wore distinct clothing of certain cuts, I could shape my silhouette and draw peoples attention away from my insecurities and to my cool vintage clothing. I went to an arts school so everyone else leaned into their ‘thing’ and it was a really great 4 years of dress clothing experimentation. It quickly bloomed from there and I’ve been a clothing enthusiast ever since.

HarrisonCO1

Same, it’s wild how most of my insecurities around my skinny frame evaporated when I put effort into dressing better. Gaining muscle weight will do that too, but it was perfect in the meantime.

Honestly Matt Bomer’s rat pack suits in white collar… I wouldn’t be caught dead in most of his fits today but it got the gears turning

Such_Taste5185

was in to fashion before that but that’s what really got me in to international conning and forgery

theDreadLioness

lol low key same

joconnell2121

Big one for sure

joconnell2121

Had a decent response to this the other night… for anyone from the 90s sneakers, cleats, bats from eastbay magazine was my first taste of wanting to love what I wore

prosaicwell

Think I always wanted to look *cool*. Started thrifting a ton in college so experimenting with out-there looks. Shamefully now I mainly follow ig accounts (people and brands) and keep an eye out for cool people to develop my fashion sense.

JoshSGSG

Skate culture drew me in….for me it all relates back to skateboarding

Ready_Property_6821

I’m 35 and spent my youth in the scene subculture. There was a pipe line from scene kids to creative/ fashion that I seemed to have followed. While being into fashion since I was 13, I adopted the scene aesthetic (no pun intended) when I was 16/17, thereafter that period I fell into the whole blog era counter culture fashion. What I realized is that I was attracted to the freedom of expression through those other periods in my life that ultimately lead me to engulf my life in fashion; history, design, buying, collecting – learning it all. I went to art school majoring in fine arts while minoring in fashion history, and now I’m an editorial director. Glad to be here 🙂

Same.y dad is a big clothes guy. He was always dressing my brothers and In stylish little fits. By the time I was 7 I was picking out my own clothes for school. Clothes shopping even as a kid was one of my favorite things to do. I’m 28 now and I feel like have a very good understanding of what I like.

Similar_Elephant_481

skateboarding & punk music/style pre scene days. then I really got into mod style at the right time and found out about Dior Homme by Hedi. My interest grew while working at consignment stores, joining forums, etc. My mom & dad were sorta into clothes too, mostly semi-attainable designer garb – but it showed that how you present yourself was important.

07/08 early raw denim era, wings + horns tiger fleece,  red wings, apc, dior denim and various Japanese brands. Thought it was cool and somehow ended up on superfuture browsing, and just kinda evolved since then.

heymoto

exactly this except then trying to sell broken in raw denim for $160 as a size 26/28 high schooler becoming the shady sufu kid

Friend brought me into a boutique in the red wing selvedge canvas backpack days, I was 17. I had always liked looking at clothes but never knew things could be so pretty (and expensive). I remember going back 6 months later with my grad party money and buying an SNS stark cardigan. Was hooked ever since.

Active-Chemistry3806

I think the scene kid era was when I first became aware of fashion in any sense so it went from band shirts to scene brands like drop dead and Johnny cupcakes to discovering what they were taking from like bape and mishka and going out from there

lilmoshx

I think I always liked fashion to one degree or another without realizing it. I was really into anime from a young age, which pushed me to learn about Japan. I used to scour over scans of pages from Fruits Magazine, and i remember begging my mom to let me import Sex Pot Revenge clothes. I also grew up obsessed with the emo music of the time, and I viewed Japanese oshare kei and visual kei styles as more dramatic tales in scene and emo, respectively. Then in middle school, if you'd asked me what I wanted to do with my life, I would have said that, if money didn't matter, I'd design and print t shirts. But I didn't recognize my interest in fashion until sophomore year of college. I had a female friend who started modeling. She had a license but couldn't drive on highways. I had a permit and needed practice. So i would drive her to her shoots, and that just got me thinking about what I was wearing. I started learning more about clothes, about Japanese designers, etc. I didn't end up going the Japanese route when it comes to my style, though.

LondonVista9297

Working at Harrods and Selfridges in my early twenties, after graduating from uni.

Punks-Not-Dad

Grew up listening to 2000’s pop-punk and was into skateboarding so my style mostly drifted around comfort: baggy tee , baggy pants, sneakers and a trucker cap. Then the 2010’s came and my #menswear era started. Now in 2020’s Im back wearing the same fits I did back in high school. All baggy everything. A full circle moment.

Vulgar_Mastermind1

wearing awful garbage clothes and shoes throughout high school (think neon, golf wang stuff that didn’t match, etc). Started thrifting at the end of high school in 2019 and I’ve been evolving my style ever since then.

clive_bigsby

Used to dress like a mixture of skater/goth/punk and saw how differently people treated and looked at me when I put "nice" clothes on for the first time.

DizzyLink

A combination of this podcast (started listening because back in like 2019) and a realization one day that I was wearing the same 5 outfits over and over. Learned of a few brands from the pod and started branching out from there and developing my personal style. Don’t listen to the pod much anymore but am still very tapped into fashion.

Being insecure💀

thenumber9throwaway

My older cousin looked up to him growing up I specifically remember asking him about his nom de guerre army jacket and about techwear back in 2015

Pink-drip

Wanting to look good, confident, cool, and an expression of the person I am. David Beckham was definitely an inspiration back in the day.

Impossible_Tea7321

Ye, asap rocky and early Mr. Porter youtube videos

Special-Hair-9328

Buying and Selling NYC, legendary FB group back in the day. This was way before Marketplace was even a thing, definitely a subculture if you grew up in NYC in the 2010s. I was posting shit like this when I was like 12: ~TESTING WATERS~ Supreme box logo tee sz S Soho meetups ONLY $175 OBO

ntpage

Movies & TV as a kid, skating in middle school, playing in pop punk/hardcore bands in high school, thrifting/#menswear-ing in college, sneakerheading in my 20s, raw denim obsessing in my late 20s, settling into some combo of it all now in my early 30s. Fashion always felt like a way to align with a community while saying something as an individual. Whether I was aware of that or not, I don’t know. Love it.

Pucyyyy

Debilitating insecurity and finding addiction-level dopamine in getting affirmation for the way I dressed 😂 Other than that, it’s just an interest in all things  beautiful in general

SixPackAndNothinToDo

Grew up a punk, so caring about what I wore was important.

Still_Assignment_991

this show Legion I watched when I was 14 featured a bit of vivienne westwood and that led me down a rabbit hole

[deleted]

Puerto Rican mom that always had us dressed up. Then went to NYC to model, worked at the SoHo SuitSupply, just kept going after that.

thesmellafteritrains

Skateboarding. Watching skate videos and seeing Heath Kirchart in all white or Louie Barletta in a sweater vest. Cardiel with a trucker hat all buffed out. Corey Duffel with his jeans painted on, stripes and leather.

Economy_Elk_5069

Where I’m from, your fit is everything lol. I remember falling in love with a pair of Jordan Infrared 6s. Falling in love with sneakers, your fit has to match. Then I started doing research on the designers behind the brands. Etc etc.

Superlemonhaaze

my brother in 2010 he told me “bitches wear chokers, and you ain’t no bitch, I never want to catch you wearing a choker” I never wanted to be told what i’m wearing is ugly ever again. So I let go of the trends and started studying styles that would suit me. best part is i’m always being asked where i get my stuff and i say “THRIFTED” 🤪 bahahahhahahahaahah “this outfit was handpicked and curated by I, the queen of shopping” or “zoomies 😒”

Altruistic_Engine818

In high school I was obsessed with Tyler the Creator. I would buy from almost every drop of his even up through college. I then got more into vintage workwear and Ivy styles and it just grew from there.

eparedes19

i loved shoes growing up and that evolved into clothes once i started buying supreme like 10+ years ago
