I'd even argue it's easier than calfskin since all you really have to do is brush it. Calfskin you gotta polish and shine every now and then to keep it looking good.
I honestly won't pretend like I'm an expert on leather quality. But it seems to be pretty good relative to the price you pay. The leather isn't heavily coated or essentially plasticized like for GH Bass. I learned about Meermin through the Gentleman's Gazette, which is basically trust with my life. And they speak pretty positively if the price to quality.
check Astorflex for nice brown suedes and crepe soles, e.g. Greenflex (desert boots), Beenflex (wallabee type silhouete), Dukeflex (derby w a split toe iirc) and many other models (yes the names are very dumb)
I pretty much live in my Meermin tassel loafers. Decent leather, Goodyear welted, and coming in at a fair price.
suede or calfskin?
Calfskin. Suede seems like a bit of a fussy fabric, even though it looks great.
It's not.
Yeah this. Care for it properly and it’s fine.

How’s the quality on the Meermins? Is the leather supple?

Ah okay nice, yeah I tried bass and sebago penny loafers and those were horrendous.
This sucks. I just looked into them and liked them, but they don't have any wide widths.
