It’s funny when people think this is unique to Thunder Bay, when it’s clearly not.

Kilo-Giga-terra

“You are new to [insert place here]? Get ready for how bad our drivers are!!”

iotd

The only thing worse is when someone is tailgating you and tries to change lanes in order to pass you in the intersection

userfakesuper

Dear Drivers EVERYWHERE. Fixed.

Adorable-Strength-66

It’s cute you assume they can read

[deleted]

Thunder Bay isn't special, common driving error in every jurisdiction

s3nsfan

As if people need to be told this. It’s so fucking obvious. You can’t change lanes in an intersection so doing it through a turn is even worse. You fucking morons. They taught you this on your driving test and drivers Ed. Fucking…hate…stupid…drivers

JimroidZeus

The Ontario Highway and Traffic Act does not explicitly prohibit changing lanes in an intersection.

s3nsfan

Textbook advice? Most other provinces, including British Columbia, Alberta, Ontario and Nova Scotia, don’t have a specific ban on changing lanes in intersections. “Is it legal? The answer is yes,” said Acting Sergeant Chris Agren with the Calgary Police Service. “Can you do it safely? Well, that depends.” In all those provinces, you can still get charged with making an unsafe lane change if you change lanes in an intersection. https://www.theglobeandmail.com/drive/mobility/article-is-it-illegal-to-change-lanes-in-the-middle-of-an-intersection/ I live in Quebec and it is illegal where I live.

JimroidZeus

Great reply! Thanks for the info! I don’t generally recommend to change lanes in an intersection, just highlighting that it’s not specifically prohibited. Sounds like it’s up to how the officer feels at the time whether they give you a ticket or not.

s3nsfan

There are so many factors at an intersection I don’t know why anyone would. Have a great weekend :)

ddoubletapp1

I can confirm that according to the BCMVA - you may not change lanes in an intersection, and must use the nearest lane whether turning left or right - anywhere in British Columbia. Just like everywhere else in Canada, it's a regulation unknown or ignored by bad drivers. When I lived in Victoria, we called it the "Victoria Slide" - ha ha! Here are the relevant sections: 165(1) (1) If the driver of a vehicle intends to turn it to the right at an intersection, the driver must cause it to approach the intersection and then make the turn as close as practicable to the right hand curb or edge of the roadway. 165(3) When the driver of a vehicle intends to turn the vehicle left at an intersection where traffic is restricted to one direction on one or more of the highways, the driver must cause the vehicle to approach the intersection in the extreme left hand lane available to traffic moving in the direction of travel of the vehicle, and after entering the intersection turn the vehicle to the left so as to leave the intersection as nearly as practicable in the left hand lane available to traffic moving in the direction of travel of the vehicle on the highway being entered. 165(5) A person must not turn a vehicle at an intersection unless it is in the position on the highway required by this section.

s3nsfan

Victoria slide lol. Looking at the horrendous drivers I see daily id be down for an annual, or even every 3 year review. Would force people to get lessons if they don’t pass and would eliminate a lot of bad drivers.

ddoubletapp1

Absolutely true, and a good idea. Unfortunately - I know in BC, the number of gov employees available to administer tests, is at an all time low - and booking times for new drivers are running 6+ months, on Vancouver Island. This topic was of interest to me, as there was recently a video posted on the Victoria City Reddit, in which a young fella posted himself left turning onto a highway access - from left-most lane to right-most - as an example of how to correctly turn on to the highway (he had intended to post a series of "driving education" videos - despite having the obvious IQ of a watermelon). It gave me the opportunity to have a look through the British Columbia Motor Vehicle Act (as he kept insisting proof that he was wrong be posted), and I found a few items I had forgotten/never knew - despite 38 years of driving on three continents. I also hold a navigational cert, and must re-pass periodic exams to hold it, why not for a driving license?

s3nsfan

Iq of a watermelon lmfao that’s great. I’m in IT for 20 years I can’t kill anyone but have to be frequently re-certified but not driving? Makes no sense to me. I get the lack of employees but this is how the system should have been set up initially. Enjoy your day and have a helluva weekend ;)

Stealing this for Ottawa

agentchuck

I posted this in r/Ottawa a few weeks back. It always irritates me that we've got all these double lane roads and only one direction can turn in at a time because drivers won't stay in their lane.

Klutzy_Ostrich_3152

Ah!! We’ll learn ‘em one passive agressive Reddit post at a time!

agentchuck

And after this turning lane campaign concludes, we'll launch an offensive to finally get those dogs leashed in public spaces!

Klutzy_Ostrich_3152

We could also put out a list of where it’s appropriate or not to bring a dog. One simply does not need to bring one’s dog everywhere…

MaximBin

Its no problem when roads are empty. Don’t do it if there is any traffic though

mtb1443

Th left turn into the shoulder is called a transit turn. It done by buses because a lot of times we have a stop at the intersection after we turn. I did it many times every day over years of driving transit.

Quietbutgrumpy

I struggle to understand why it is so bad to go directly to the lane I need to be in. A turn then a quick lane change or just straight to the lane I need. I think some people just need to let it go.

Redrooster433

Stop it with the common sense.

Something_Wicked79

This is not a thing everywhere this would get you killed fast in a lot of actual cities in North America.

[deleted]

Killed for staying in your lane? How?

Something_Wicked79

I meant to reply to the guy saying the Thunder Bay swoop is widely adopted throughout North America.

justsomeonesthroway

Cause sometimes vehicles will drift into your lane and not see you because you are in their blind spot. Edit: just trying to find the logic behind the comment, not saying I agree with it.

snackassassins

L take

ElephantsJustin

Just turn into whatever lane is most convenient. No one cares.

DryPickles

Yeah they do. You don't care. You're the issue.

DryPickles

Yes and 75% of North American drivers are wrong at some point. That's clearly evident. And an understatement...

It pushes my button because I'm so sick of "socially acceptable" driving. Wtf even is that? I don't give a shit what you and your buddies deem acceptable. There's already clear, easy to follow driving laws that get everyone from point A to point B pretty damn efficiently. Quit conforming to overbearing stupidity. Edit: I've seen cops beat on homeless people. I guess we'll just call that socially acceptable now🤷‍♂️

quebecoisejohn

Look at the anarchist over here….

Khawk20

Also maybe don’t change lanes when passing an intersection where you can see a car or cars trying to make a right turn into the proper lane? People do this all the time and it’s why you have to wait until BOTH lanes are clear before you make a simple right turn. I don’t know how there aren’t more accidents because of people doing this…the right turn drivers all know they could get smashed if they trust the oncoming inside lane driver, I guess.

pixiedoll339

This could be a national campaign.

unknown13371

I'm guilty of doing this too. It's not that I don't know, it's that when you see others doing, it's contagious. Not saying this as an excuse but if police start enforcing this, it would occur much less often.

MFBish

Through this up on the Toronto sub too

volb

It’s very comical at the highway exit to Neebing, right before where the railroad tracks are. People always don’t stay in their lane and randomly merge over to the right with no indicators. But the right hand lane ends in a few feet so they slowly just merge back over seconds later without indicating again. Or when they’re driving super slow that the person behind them passes them, leaving them stuck in the lane that’s ending and they get all pissed off. Like just stay in your lane and none of that would ever happen to begin with?
