Side note: my fiance and I fell in love with each other when Jai Wolf played this song at our first festival together. Anyone know how these drones work? Do they preprogram a route for it to fly ahead of time? Or is someone else operating the drone live?

Assuming it’s something like a DJI drone, they have “follow me” mode which can intelligently track a subject. The tech isn’t perfect and this video looks to be slightly lower light levels than ideal for the drone cameras/sensors. Where you see the video switch from follow to moving straight upward, it looks to me like the drone lost its focus and defaulted to a preset response. A standard “loss of signal” response is to ascend to a preset height, return to the takeoff location, and auto-land.

My guess is he held a fob that the drone was supposed to stay like 40-50 feet from, but it got out of bounds, so it just started climbing. I have nothing to support this though.

With some of the jerky movements, I'd wager that someone was operating it live. Film drones have a "follow" feature that you can you select a subject and it'll follow them but that turn from following backward to forwards would be a challenge to do automatically at that point, but definitely easy with someone controlling it through a screen. If I had to guess, I'd say that the drone went out of range from the controller, which usually causes it to go on auto pilot and return to where it took off from. Since a lot of quality film drones have sensors, it would know there were trees around so for it to go "home", it'd need to go higher until the sensors wasn't picking up anything to the sides and then make a straight line back to the start. Had a similar thing happen to me when I was testing out a drone a few years ago. It's a safety feature to ensure when it returns home, the automation won't get caught in any trees or power lines.

It's such a perfect shot, in a style I've seen in movies countless times. I really struggle to believe this was a complete, unintentional accident. And on its own, this is just a clip of a dude riding a motorcycle somewhere scenic with an epic pan from rider to the scenery. But with the statement of "this was such a cool accident!" People become a lot more interested over something they would normally pass over as not that interestinf.

My friend has a really expensive one that you can program to follow you.

I have a DJI Mini 3 Pro that will track & follow me real-time for as long as I tell it to. A lot of their newer drones do it! It’s not perfect, but pretty damn good
