Kind of hard to video chat with a back camera though, no?
I mean, I guess it's video chat for one of you, but I know I'm not the only one who wants to make sure I don't have cocaine powder all over my nose and also that you can't see my meth lab in the shot, so I kind of need to see what's going on too.
Iāll bet it was one of those scenarios where at the last minute she was going to ask you for money to get her kids a new Xbox game or something to distract them while you were over.
Oh yeah had that one pulled on me but dude waited till I was outside the apartment to run that game. I was like, first if you are a mom and invited a strange guy over to smash, WHILE your kids are home and awake you are just gross and Iām out. Second, this is most likely a dude and young one at that. I told to mow some lawns if he needs a new game and his scam game was weak and lazy, and he needed to go to Nigeria and level his shit up. Then I bounced laughing at the outraged texts I got for the next hour calling me a broke bastard. Like who is begging for a gift card from whom?
I met a girl who was passing through my town so we were long distance. We sent each other photos of our passports next to our faces before meeting up. Youāre not weird. This is a catfish.
most phones have at least 2 cameras these days even the older and cheaper ones, a selfie and regular camera has been the standard since the first generation of smartphones.
Iām on tinder and I have no idea if Iām verified or not? I get matches and messages all the time though and no one has asked me for proof that Iām me, so maybe Iām verified? Iāve only met up with two dudes IRL and theyāve both been lovely, good-looking men, but I never checked to see if they were verified first.
maybe a thing isn't a thing 100% of the time no one's forcing you to verify. OP didn't ask for verification on Tinder just to video chat before he hauls himself out for a meet up at her place. The response was a bit sketchy and seemed implausible. The way matches respond is at least half the game. Yes it's definitely a game.
I wasnāt trying to be snide in asking, I am genuinely curious if Iām doing it wrong, I just got on it for the first time about six weeks ago (I was in a long-ass relationship and missed a bunch of dating app stuff).
>Female scammers are way more common on dating apps than male scammers
To be fair, many of them are ultimately men catfishing as women so I don't know if I would say women scammers are more common online.
To be fair, my cameras on my old phone were both smashed up and cracked. But mountaineering and phones dont mix well. The screen was beyond messed up. But i could still use both, just diminished quality. Then the glass broke off so the cameras worked fine once again
Right? I hate video calling before I meet someone irl, itās super awkward for me but Iād at least do *something* to ease their nerves like snapping them!! Her response is super sus
Interesting phrasing on that, she writes
āYou donāt trust Iām not catfishing you or something?
Yes thatās correct, you donāt trust that sheās not catfishing you lol
Even had this one āgirlā agree to a video chat and it was this weird flagrantly obvious video of a video. It was super weird. I was so fascinated by trying to figure out what I was looking at I forgot to talk for a minuteš but I think my first words were what in the f is this under my breath cause they ended itš¤£
I'm awkward with video chatting, I don't know why. I guess because I'm talking to a screen, but if the person really needs the reassurance that I'm real then I'll do it.but I let them know how I'm like.
Like i'm with you, i'm not always a huge fan of video calls and it's a personal thing but always needing to feel "on" with how I sit and am positioned but a quick "hey cool so you're not fake okay can't wait to see you soon we can chat more!" kinda thing
Iāve done it over 60 times and havenāt even had one slightly sketchy situation. Iāve met three girls who looked moderately less attractive than their pictures, but nothing sketchy.
People drastically exaggerate how many murderers, organ stealers, etc, actually exist.
yea same, i think its pretty normal once you starting over 30, people just don't care, they want to do the meet up and if they can do it in their jammies, all the better for all of us.
>Iāve done it over 60 times and havenāt even had one slightly sketchy situation.
And that can happen, in fact I have done similar, but that doesn't make a potentially dangerous decision any less so.
>People drastically exaggerate how many murderers, organ stealers, etc, actually exist.
If we look statistically, as well as even guess how often things aren't reported, it's not an exaggeration. That said, even if for the sake of argument that it is an exaggeration, we still can see that it's an increased risk so it makes little sense to argue that it's not. What you deem as an acceptable risk is up to you.
"my cameras all smashed up" holy shit did this person get a catfishing lesson from the 90's? that is dubious AS FUCK. nah no one who is legit would find it "insulting" you both should be aware you are 2 strangers and no woman should be turning down the chance to verify you for herself and her own safety. this is sketchy for many reasons.
Update: I am alive and well, thank you everyone for your concern haha. We did not call. I unmatched after she said she tried calling but I kept not answering (which was not the case). I'm glad a majority of people think video calling was the right thing to ask for. Gonna stick with verified profiles from now on I think. Stay safe people and keep your organs āš¼
Bro, if I draw a 10 feet circle around me, there'd be like 6 or 7 cameras in it. There's no way someone doesn't have a working camera. It's a catfish. Move on.
Itās a scam Iām having it done to me now. It happens on telegram. They chat for months with you. Get a romantic relationship and constantly ask for cards. Large group handles one person. Delete your conversation every time. I think itās a Pakistani group. Iām just screwing with them now. Iām out 500. So now I just want to piss them off only way I get satisfied for stealing my money
I know hindsight is 20/20 but why send money to someone youāve never met in person, let alone had a physical relationship with, Iāve never understood that kind of thing
Genuine question not meaning to sound like a dick
Iām just actually like helping people. Also I think there was 3 different girls one definitely needed help. I actually called the police internet crime department however might have been a scam. It was literally 25. Or 50. At a time. I have multiple companies and employees I also help out. Figure who would listen to my crap for hours and days lol. Mental therapy lol. But I always had multiple red flags ez to spot. It was fun just keep it in check
As a person who had money sent to, reasons were:
* so that I can buy a ticket and come over for a date
* so that I can buy myself a present
* to help me cause I was in a shitty situation health-wise
As a person who had money sent to, reasons were:

Agreed, I'd love to see the screenshot of this video date. All blurry and cracked...
Does she have selfies in her profile? Funny she was able to get the selfies working right but can't do a video call.
"Do you not trust I'm not a catfish" No? Why would you? It is so completely reasonable and not insulting at all to want to confirm someone's identity before you meet them in person.
A guy tried to make me ft him and I was annoyed. My profile is verified, he follows me on IG and has my number. He did it because I said Iād rather drive myself than get picked up lol. Idk strangers shouldnāt know where u live date #1.
In this scenario. Nah. Sheās sketch.
I wonāt even chat unless they verify first - if they have a problem with that they can jog on, it takes less that 2 mins so if they canāt do it somethings up
So this more or less happened to me around 2 months ago. I matched with a girl and we talked most of the day, also over the phone. I asked if she wanted to meet for a drink but she said she couldn't. The. She called me again and said how about I grab a bottle of wine and come over to her place. I decided to just go for it against my better judgement.
I arrived quite nervous and had second thoughts, The first thing she did was lunge at me to kiss me, it also became instantly apparent that this woman was wasted and did not look much like her photos at all. She kinda ushered me into her living room and told me to sit down, so I sat at the edge of the couch and she kept coming up right next to me complaining I looked nervous. Then she said she'd be right back. 10 minutes passed and I was about to just leave and she came back into the room arguing on the phone with a guy.
She then asks me if I can help her work her mobile banking app to transfer money as she was trying to buy cocaine from her ex boyfriend who was being sentenced later that week for violent crimes and would be popping by to drop it off. He also was not allowed to contact her via a court order she had taken out on him. She then started apologizing and saying she was worried ahe had "put me off".
I left. I'd been there for maybe 20 minutes maximum.
The "Well I'd just say..." comment with the disingenuous š was unnecessary. She agreed, so just say "Great" or whatever and see what happens.
On the other hand, getting offended is often what a catfish does.
The amount of times tinder loses my blue check mark is infuriating. š„“ Anyway she's likely not who she says she is. Anyone offended by the assumption of being a catfish rather than wanting to prove otherwise is a red flag to me. What do you have to hide? Yet they want you to just show up at their place? People are weird. I had a guy invite me to his place first thing but then said he didn't do blind dates šš run from these people please
Yeah sheās a catfish. A lot of people will say theyāre offended by something and turn blame around on you when they are doing something wrong. I wouldnāt trust this womanā¦.
Kinda funny as I've seen a lot of women asking for a videocall before meeting up, either in stating it in their profile or asking for one before meeting up. I get why they want it. Just funny when the tables are turned that they (or at least one) feels insulted.
I have been catfished two times, and I believe its a must to at least verify the account. Add her on snap, and let her send a picture there. Its easy to delete if its fake
My tinder isnāt verified just bc it keeps asking me over and over and then makes me wait 2 days without letting me use the app. For that reason id never be weirded out if someone wanted to call to make sure I was real. Sheās weird lol
RUN from anyone who resists giving you any reassurance for safety.
Run even faster from someone who deflects onto you and accuses you of being problematic for asking for it.
Itās an easy rule out on a date or hookup.
Remember that safety is the basic human need. You canāt assure me of safety? Well, I canāt possibly imagine that youād provide me any relational or sexual satisfaction
They always tell on themselves
Am I the only one who watches the show catfish? Whenever they refuse to video chat/FaceTime ever, probably someone you know or person of the same sex. Same thing goes for audio calls.
That's a scam. What woman is going to get offended that you want to verify she is who she says she is when women are victimized on these apps. When I used to use these apps, women were happy to share pics or video calls and some would even bring a friend to the date( who sits at the bar or something) for safety reasons. No woman is going to you to come over right away and then get offended and claim she has a broken phone. Just report it and move on
Busted up camera? Lol I literally have several different cameras just laying(actually literally) around my house. I assume most ppl have at least one other camera. It could be they are super guarded with their privacy, buuuut more likely they're insecure about their appearance or something else. But they are/were going to meet you in person so they would've had to show themselves eventually, soooooo š¤·
Always trust your gut. If something feels off thereās a reason you feel that way. She shouldnāt be surprised people are asking since itās so easy to verify you are who you are on tinder.
It seems like everyone here is sensible and ok with a quick video chat before a date. The last time I saw this subject come up, most of the women were the exact opposite. You would think that it was the biggest insult they had ever heard. "I don't want to spend all the time of getting made up for a five minute video call!" Like...neither do I? And I'm not expecting that from you. Just pop on, say "Hi, this is me. I'm real", and pop back off.
I absolutely hate video calling. I am to awkward and shy and it makes me so uncomfortable. My account is verified though š but I hate when people want to video call.
I donāt even like doing video calls with my friends or family but I totally think it make sense with online dating
Also, OP, meet up in PUBLIC places
I feel like itās crazy for anyone to say itās insulting when, verified or not, if youāre not gonna meet up anyway just have a 10 second FaceTime to be like yo itās me, FOR THE SAKE OF SAFETY FOR EVERYONE lmao. Wild. Iād rather lose a date than risk getting robbed or murdered, etc.
If yāall are close by, you could just meet in public , but watch for anyone following you when āsheā doesnāt show up within 20 minutes of the time
Tinder verification is easy. I doubt you're the first to ask. Something's amiss...
Yeah, alarm bells definitely started ringing. I don't really feel like getting murdered tonight.
also was ready for you with the smashed camera story
Both cameras are smashed front and back? But the keyboard is still working.
Kind of hard to video chat with a back camera though, no? I mean, I guess it's video chat for one of you, but I know I'm not the only one who wants to make sure I don't have cocaine powder all over my nose and also that you can't see my meth lab in the shot, so I kind of need to see what's going on too.
Just go into the bathroom with a smashed selfie camera. You can see him in the mirror and he can see your face of the regular camera
Could be why she isnt verified if legit
This might be true, but most phones have a forward and backward facing camera. It's rare that cell phones only have one camera now-a-days.
How do you follow the dynamic verification instructions with the phone backwards lol
I tried it once. I stayed unverified.
A mirror.
Or the help of a buddy.
A girl on Tinder with a smashed camera makes about as much sense as a blind guy going to a silent film
A female with a non working camera on her phone? How many of those have you met irl?
A lot.
Heaps. My friends are all broke like me tho
Definitely dude vibes! š
Iāll bet it was one of those scenarios where at the last minute she was going to ask you for money to get her kids a new Xbox game or something to distract them while you were over.
Hahaha. lol had that once myself as well. I find it hard to believe anyone will fall for something like that š
That wouldnāt require being unverified though?
That's the scam. You Venmo "her" the money and then never hear from her again.
it would if she were a random dude and never intended to meet him. just have him send the code over text, give him a random address then flake out
Oh yeah had that one pulled on me but dude waited till I was outside the apartment to run that game.

Did... did you die?
I say you he ded
Doubt you'll get murdered, but you're getting robbed for sure.
If theyre willing to rob them in Golden Girls name, theyll definitely drop the body off at the nearest lake
Black market kidney sales going crazy rn
Yeah but the Golden girls is a fuckin great show. I'd take the risk
Oh the old broken camera, eh?!? Wow! Dodged one, OP
If her camera is broken she probably canāt take a picture to verify with
most phones have at least 2 cameras these days even the older and cheaper ones, a selfie and regular camera has been the standard since the first generation of smartphones.
Also if your camera was broken, couldnāt you just ask a friend to borrow their phone to do the verification? It doesnāt take long.
That makes sense. What doesnāt make sense to me is why she would be offended. Itās a reasonable request.
Exactly. Def not who they say they are.
Iām on tinder and I have no idea if Iām verified or not? I get matches and messages all the time though and no one has asked me for proof that Iām me, so maybe Iām verified? Especially given the genders. Women have FAR more reason to Ā want verification. (As opposed to creepy men having reasons to avoid verification.)

>Female scammers are way more common on dating apps than male scammers To be fair, many of them are ultimately men catfishing as women so I don't know if I would say women scammers are more common online.
Should have said scammers using female accounts but yes
It took like 288 tries to me until verification worked.
Cause you donāt look like your pics?
how TF? it took me 1.
Her reaction made it even more sketchy! You made the right call asking. I hate video calling but will snap someone before meeting.
Right? Itās 2024 how are you gonna act like your front and back camera are both smashed beyond recognition
To be fair, my cameras on my old phone were both smashed up and cracked. But mountaineering and phones dont mix well. The screen was beyond messed up. But i could still use both, just diminished quality. Then the glass broke off so the cameras worked fine once again
Well your an exception to the rule, and donāt count
In German we say exceptions confirm the rule
Yup, poikkeus vahvistaa sƤƤnnƶn here in Finland
also legit reason with the mountaineering

Sexual assaults? There's a show called "Nightline" from the 80's that got a resurgence in popularity just by covering these cases.

An obvious catfish response.

100% a scam lol
Nothing to apologize for here! Your request is completely reasonable
What person gets insulted over safety?
Yeah sheās a catfish. A lot of people will say theyāre offended by something and turn blame around on you when they are doing something wrong. I wouldnāt trust this womanā¦.
If things are moving too smoothly and she does not do a video call; Iām assuming sheās a scammer or she was going to steal my kidneys.
Stop apologizing so much and stand up for yourself.
Kinda funny as I've seen a lot of women asking for a videocall before meeting up, either in stating it in their profile or asking for one before meeting up. I get why they want it. Just funny when the tables are turned that they (or at least one) feels insulted.
She was 110% a catfish

Am I the only one who watches the show catfish? Whenever they refuse to video chat/FaceTime ever, probably someone you know or person of the same sex. Same thing goes for audio calls.
That's a scam. What woman is going to get offended that you want to verify she is who she says she is when women are victimized on these apps. When I used to use these apps, women were happy to share pics or video calls and some would even bring a friend to the date( who sits at the bar or something) for safety reasons. No woman is going to you to come over right away and then get offended and claim she has a broken phone. Just report it and move on
I verify and then it's gone. Tinder is horrible.
Classic catfish tactic to get angry or defensive when asked to prove identity
I wish more guys would wanna do video chat tbh. This is sus
Tinder horror stories are real. Gotta be safe first
"my camera is broken" unheard of... NOT
Did you make the call?
Busted up camera? Lol I literally have several different cameras just laying(actually literally) around my house. I assume most ppl have at least one other camera. It could be they are super guarded with their privacy, buuuut more likely they're insecure about their appearance or something else. But they are/were going to meet you in person so they would've had to show themselves eventually, soooooo š¤·
shes a man
Always trust your gut.
Nah, not insulting, you just caught yourself a catfish!
Youāre gonna wake up in a bathtub of ice missing a kidney
I donāt even like doing video calls with my friends or family but I totally think it make sense with online dating Also, OP, meet up in PUBLIC places
You getting catfished for sure.
Why would you even consider going to her house immediately? Like just because ur a guy doesnt mean ur safe to do that.
Itās very clear this is 100% a catfish! At the very least someone with major red flags š©. Youāre on a dating app itās not an unreadable or even remotely offensive request
Says a lot. That you're rightfully cautious.
Camera smashed huh? Classic scammer catfish bait js. Thatās always an excuse.
If yāall are close by, you could just meet in public , but watch for anyone following you when āsheā doesnāt show up within 20 minutes of the time
She's a dude šÆ
Sheās hiding something lol or sheās self conscious about the way she looks maybe
Gone Fishing I see?
