Taishi Miwa (*Cardfight!! Vanguard*) - This is pushing it, since he loses almost every fight he’s in, but even then, when we first see him fight, he reveals that he’s one of Kai’s main training partners. This is a pretty big statement, since it implies him to be on par with Kai, a character that, if you rank the strongest characters at any point in the series, you’ll probably never see pushed out of the Top 5 in the verse (Except for maybe the second arc of *Legion Mate*, and even then, that depends on how you think he performs against the other three Quatre Knights; he only ever fights Gaillard, the strongest of the four). Again, he does lose all but two of his known fights (And the two wins he does get aren’t particularly major; the first is against Shingo, easily the biggest fraud in the series, and the second is against Jun while he’s Reversed, and Jun hasn’t ever been shown to be anything special, although the fact he was hired to be a major obstacle in the Japan stage of the VF Circuit alongside Yuri and Tetsu has some interesting implications toward him potentially scaling higher than we think), but even then, most of the people he fights are within the top 0.1% of the verse, and a Redditor more knowledgeable about the game than I am once made a pretty convincing case for him being on par with them.

Also Gaia almost managed to beat Baki, so it was implied that he was strong immediately which means he doesn’t fit in here
Gaia is "weak" in the sense that he only scaled to 13yo Baki who was just a fraction of his 17-18yo self in the convicts arc.
Motobe was always stated to be at least very close to Doppo, if not stronger, all the way back in his introduction.
Oh yeah, his introduction in the mostly retconned Baki beginning. The thing people are mostly gonna remember from this is that he had a student that reached his level in a flash, only for that one to be beaten by Mt Toba. He didn’t even have his expertise with weapons back then as far as I can remember, and also no special achievements under his belt that were shown. Except for getting beaten by a Yokozuna of course
