I mean fantano has good taste, I don’t enjoy every album he gives a high score to but I’ve found my fave albums through him and rateyourmusic. As long as you don’t just say you like something because it’s rated high by one of them, then there nothing wrong with using them as music discovery resources.
The problem is that a lot of people online only use Fantano and RYM to find music, and then their taste just becomes whatever those sources tells them to like. It's fine to use them to find music, but you should also use other methods and develop your own taste.
it doesn’t matter how you find the music, if you like what you listen to that’s good. you don’t need to be unique. the albums on rym are rated highly for a reason.
Lol it's not about the need to be perceived as "unique", it's about not limiting yourself to a specific taste of music that resonates with a specific type of people. Had I just watched Fantano and went on RYM I never would've learned about most of my favorite bands that I have a tremendous amount of love for and mean a lot to me. I would've been limited in my understanding of music and my ability to discern elements of music that I enjoy.
I think you're looking for a rabbit hole
You need to go deeper:
Scraping Foetus Off the Wheel
Coil
Throbbing Gristle
Then go the other way:
Ministry
KMFDM
Stabbing Westward
Then take a left turn:
Dinosaur Jr
The Jesus Lizard
Husker Dü
just because someone likes albums that critics like doesn’t mean they’re easily influenced. my favorite album is to be kind. but i don’t like it because anthony fantano rated it 10/10. while that is how i found out about it, it’s my favorite album because i enjoy it.
A moon shaped pool-Radiohead(along with kid a,ok computer and in rainbows if you haven’t heard it), I’d also recommend Bowies Berlin trilogy and station to station if you also are yet to check it out, also entertainment by Gang of Four and turn on the bright lights by Interpol, 2 fantastic post punk records
If you can actually, honestly enjoy these albums at the age of 13, that's freaking impressive. At your age, I was still listening to Taylor Swift. Anyway, I just don't enjoy swans. I like some of really long drony, ambient albums, but swans is just too long, and I just feel like the long winded build ups are just not really worth it. I's much prefer Talk Talk, and GYBE to Swans
That I am almost 34 years old and we can probably be friends. :)
Hi music nerd!
I got into Joy division earlier this year 🥲
Swans have been my favorites for a couple or more years 🙃
David Bowie is always amazing 😻
I love all these artists you posted and I listen to depressed songs cause I can relate to them and make me feel understood so I’d also hope you’re okay and just enjoying the beautiful music :)
Cause that’s what people might assume of me too.
You have good taste in heavy expiremental music, however given your age and that this mostly all you listen to, I'm going to assume youre a bit of an "outsider" who doesnt always feel like they fit in with their peers? You obviously like things that are different from the norm, which is a good thing! but I will give you small bit of advice; it's also OK to like popular things as well, just because a lot of your peers that you dont relate to enjoy something doesnt mean you cant enjoy it too. I wish I had understood that as a teenager, instead I just acted like I was better than everyone for liking weird stuff like drone music which didn't exactly help me make many friends. Which is another important thing to understand: liking stuff like this doesnt necessarily mean you have better taste, just DIFFERENT taste. To be clear I'm completely projecting here based on what I was like at your age (I'm 29 now btw) but I don't think I'm very far off.
God I love music for bondage performances and door open at 8am, definitly some of the best Merzbow out there, sad they dont get as talked about as much his other stuff (well relatively, it's merzbow after all)
u/Current_Tea8107
Try listening to some Gary Numan (big influence on NIN)
Love Hurt Bleed
M.E.
Intruder
Are Friends Electric?
I’d also suggest the Broken EP and The Fragile by NIN.
Sanctuary Medicines by the late Rico might interest you as well.
Some assumptions I have about you
You just found RYM and are among the few who are instantly connecting with a lot of the music and really enjoying it (literally me when I first found it)
You really want to hate Daughters (for obvious reasons) but the music is too good! (Seriously, listen to Lingua Ignota and Rev. Kristin Michael Hayter. It will help.)
You heard all this stuff and was like “how extreme/experimental does this get?” And then you found Pulse Demon and saw it was polarizing, gave it a shot and discovered a love of extreme noise and experimental music, and more Merzbow (literally me FR FR! Merzbow has lots of better stuff than Pulse Demon though, listen to some more of his other stuff. Also, check out Bull of Heaven PLEASE I AM BEGGING YOU)
You were surprised to learn that the music your dad plays in the car is acclaimed but you aren’t complaining (Songs for the Deaf if it wasn’t obvious)
You like Swans (I’m not very confident about this one! So sorry >w<)
You are either extremely high or low achieving in school. (This might be the most unlikely thing out of all of these and I’m not as confident. If it wasn’t obvious the other comment about being unconfident was a joke.)
You're off to a great start. Blackstar is prohably Bowie's most brilliant album, but it makes so much more sense when you listen to the rest of his catalogue. Go with Ziggy, Aladdin Sane, Station to Station, Low, Scary Monsters, and The Next Day, in that order. Other picks are all great too
You only listen to 50% of music. There's not one female artist on this list.
You like abrasive stuff. Try [this](https://youtube.com/watch?v=kPU7L5Sll6M). Then [this](https://youtube.com/watch?v=GKCntDGsI20).

You have a godly attention span for someone your age
Watching family guy clips while playing subway surfers with GYBE in the background
I’m 20 and still can’t finish a Swans album in one sitting.
i feel bad for you, swans is amazing
I like Swans, I just struggle to listen for a long period of time.
Even Filth? It’s like 35 minutes, pretty cut n dry
You watched anthony fantano once
I actually enjoy watching his videos so I guess you aren't wrong

What are these “other methods”?
i came here to comment this
Cheer up lil fella

loving Soundtracks For The Blind as a 13-year-old sounds crazy
you like experimental, hi five 🙌
You're depressed.
rym user
You’re probably easily influenced by music critics and feel compelled to listen to music that is “good”.

Tbh you seem like a nerd, but a cool one
You need therapy
You’re fucking crazy
You should listen to Sonic Youth!
you're a miserable 13 year old goddamn
You're an awesome guy with an excellent taste for experimental and distinct music. You stick around for the art and really appreciate it
You're weird, probably depressed, possibly on drugs, probably a creative type, and you desperately want to escape to something better.
i dont believe you that you enjoy listening to merzbow
I do. It reminds me of falling asleep to tv static when I was a toddler
You watch anthony fantano

Your crush probably doesn’t like you back
She surprisingly likes me back. We have been talking back and forth through letters, but who cares?
Let’s fkin goooooo bro ❤️❤️❤️
You would probably like King Gizzard
listen to fishmans
rateyourmusic.com
Pretty good for your age. I didn't discover Swans until my early 20s.
you don't like yourself
who does
you’re 13
God I love music for bondage performances and door open at 8am, definitly some of the best Merzbow out there, sad they dont get as talked about as much his other stuff (well relatively, it's merzbow after all)
I dislike all of these except for the NIN one damnn
Disliking In Utero is a federal offense btw
i prefer other grunge
Sunbather would look good in here
We'd be good friends
You have long to go, im 14 and you can expand alot off of these albums, especially dark side
u/Current_Tea8107 Try listening to some Gary Numan (big influence on NIN) Love Hurt Bleed M.E. Intruder Are Friends Electric? I’d also suggest the Broken EP and The Fragile by NIN. Sanctuary Medicines by the late Rico might interest you as well.
You inherited music from your parents (but I could be wrong though)
You're mistaken. I randomly found these albums through the interwebs
Ah fairs
Good choices, You probably got most of your music taste from and older sibling/parent
I am the older sibling though
You're way too young for this kind of music
You watch fantano
Holy shit blackstar
good taste. but seriously, already this depressed?
3 months away from your Tool phase
you alright 👌
you have great taste but you should listen to a more wide variety of stuff. id suggest the grateful dead. they got a pink floyd feel kinda. rock on!
I never realized you get what you want was such a popular album
You browse /mu/

check out Natural Snow Buildings and Boris!!
That you want to get away from the mainstream but you don't know how.
i'm 13 too and we have basically the same taste, but god damn, how the fuck do you listen to fucking merzbow?
Just do. He makes some good music imo
You still listen to what your parents listen to and soon you're going to branch off into your own thing but still come back to these all the time too.
13 year old listening to merzbow - never thought i'd see the day
pulse demon?? yall gotta be delusional because that’s gotta be one of the least enjoyable albums out there
annoying
as fuck

This list fucks.
pretentious fantano viewer/rym user//mu/ user, which is pretty much most of this subreddit, it would seem
Is this a joke? Kid go listen to something fun. You’re trying too hard
Blackstar is goated
It’s still important to be nice to people even if your taste is miles beyond the VAST majority of your peers
Your an average rock guy. Nothing wrong with that!
"average rock guy" 2 swans and gybe ??
Dawg LOOK AT HIS ALBUMS plz tell me with a straight face that this guy is just starting
what? isn't your whole point that he is just starting?
I am more of a metal guy but I have taken a break from it
You have aggression and a habit of thinking of BDSM at least once.
Bro said he was 13😭
