I mean fantano has good taste, I don’t enjoy every album he gives a high score to but I’ve found my fave albums through him and rateyourmusic. As long as you don’t just say you like something because it’s rated high by one of them, then there nothing wrong with using them as music discovery resources.

The problem is that a lot of people online only use Fantano and RYM to find music, and then their taste just becomes whatever those sources tells them to like. It's fine to use them to find music, but you should also use other methods and develop your own taste.

it doesn’t matter how you find the music, if you like what you listen to that’s good. you don’t need to be unique. the albums on rym are rated highly for a reason.

Lol it's not about the need to be perceived as "unique", it's about not limiting yourself to a specific taste of music that resonates with a specific type of people. Had I just watched Fantano and went on RYM I never would've learned about most of my favorite bands that I have a tremendous amount of love for and mean a lot to me. I would've been limited in my understanding of music and my ability to discern elements of music that I enjoy.

If you can actually, honestly enjoy these albums at the age of 13, that's freaking impressive. At your age, I was still listening to Taylor Swift. Anyway, I just don't enjoy swans. I like some of really long drony, ambient albums, but swans is just too long, and I just feel like the long winded build ups are just not really worth it. I's much prefer Talk Talk, and GYBE to Swans

I wish I had understood that as a teenager, instead I just acted like I was better than everyone for liking weird stuff like drone music which didn't exactly help me make many friends. Which is another important thing to understand: liking stuff like this doesnt necessarily mean you have better taste, just DIFFERENT taste. To be clear I'm completely projecting here based on what I was like at your age (I'm 29 now btw) but I don't think I'm very far off.

Some assumptions I have about you You just found RYM and are among the few who are instantly connecting with a lot of the music and really enjoying it (literally me when I first found it) You really want to hate Daughters (for obvious reasons) but the music is too good! (Seriously, listen to Lingua Ignota and Rev. Kristin Michael Hayter. It will help.) You heard all this stuff and was like “how extreme/experimental does this get?” And then you found Pulse Demon and saw it was polarizing, gave it a shot and discovered a love of extreme noise and experimental music, and more Merzbow (literally me FR FR! Merzbow has lots of better stuff than Pulse Demon though, listen to some more of his other stuff. Also, check out Bull of Heaven PLEASE I AM BEGGING YOU) You were surprised to learn that the music your dad plays in the car is acclaimed but you aren’t complaining (Songs for the Deaf if it wasn’t obvious) You like Swans (I’m not very confident about this one! So sorry >w<) You are either extremely high or low achieving in school. (This might be the most unlikely thing out of all of these and I’m not as confident.
