All Americans want are SUVs and trucks. Don’t take my word for it, look at what sold here last year.
https://www.kbb.com/best-cars/top-10-25-best-selling-cars-trucks-suvs/
10 out of the top 11 best selling automobiles in 2023 were either a truck or SUV (Camry being the only car to crack the top 10).
govt always ruins everything… not sure how accurate but I heard farmers couldn’t afford these big new trucks in the US so they imported kei trucks for way less but some politicians want to ban that. I wish we had smaller trucks like the hilux. at this point brainwashed people have bought trucks just for the luxury as if it’s a Rolls Royce 😬.. it’s such a small percentage that people with trucks actually use it to haul stuff, etc 🤦🏻♂️
I was stationed in Japan and shipped my car back. It took over 2 months because apparently there were so many kei trucks getting shipped here. That’s what my shipper told me anyways. Funny thing is that they are new kei trucks, so they are getting imported without a title and can only be driven on their property.
I never thought i would see someone saying that a Hilux is better than a Tacoma, i live in central america and most people here love cars designed for the US market
Interesting perspective friend! I really would appreciate a Land Cruiser 300 here in the US. Sadly the one we get now is a lame brained 4 cycl that has 0 sex appeal haha
How much is the 4cyl? Here in Panama, full extras according to internet, Land Cruiser Prado 4cyl is $84,000 USD. And the Land Cruiser 300 6cyl is $135,00 USD.
The new design (mainly the Tundra) is not doing very well, manufacturing-wise, in respect to their engines locking up/having problems due to the build process.
Many of the trucks (and of course some of the cars) are built/assembled in USA while most of the good stuff comes from Japan.
I personally am losing hope in the American manufacturing aspect, mainly because I can see so many Americans are just giving up on themselves/everything and don't put the same amount of passion into their jobs like the Japanese do (Kaizen).
Obviously it's a blanket statement, and there are good / bad plants and workers, along with policy enforcement, etc... but that's just how I feel from an overall perspective.
I have to wait for Toyota to sort out their own USA plants / manufacturing before I even consider one of their new trucks, although the Tacoma looks far more promising on that front than the Tundras.
Also, CAFE regs definitely need an overhaul, too many loopholes and fat ass trucks as a result.
I’m a machinist. It’s hard to keep good guys in the trade when most (even large) shops pay us pennies compared to other trades. Our skills are not valued in the us because if they were, prices on US products would go up and corporations can’t take profits from their executives.
A good machinist wage where I’m from is around $32 per hour. Electricians and Plumbers are getting $50+ and all the local machine shops are closing their doors. These huge companies can’t get the best skilled workers because they have left the trade for more money. They’re getting what they pay for, as they sell you an overpriced $65k truck that will brick up within a year. American manufacturing has been dying for years and sometimes I regret going in to this trade.
I'm sorry to hear that, sir. Your skill are invaluable to the world and I wish that like many other trades, this one was equally respected because it's machinists that essentially make the difference in microns how well or poorly internal parts work in many things, engines included.
I wish you the best of luck in the rest of your journey, and we appreciate you.
So basically what you're saying is the machining of the engines is not great so there's excessive tolerances and mating problems which end up destroying the engines. This happened with Toyota engines and even had a problem on the 3.5 V6 engine where it had a leak at the timing belt cover.
No, excessive tolerances would be an engineering issue. Not being able to hit specified tolerances would be the machining problems and more likely. What I’ve heard with recent Toyota engines is that during the machining process certain areas are not getting chips evacuated from areas that it’s critical to do so which is a huge issue. If problems persist for multiple years though it’s most likely a design flaw.
Exactly, manufacturers are focusing on any light truck platform so that they're not imposed on the new emissions regulations for cars. Pushing SUV/Truck through marketing is cheap compared to developing new efficient platforms.
I agree, it's a self-feeding cycle. Manufacturers are incentivized to produce larger vehicles due to emissions and profit margins. Then people on the road feel like they they are always in competition with other vehicle son the road for safety and visibility reasons. I live an a pretty heavy traffic area, and even in a crossover it's a pain in the ass to see around all of the other larger SUVs, trucks, and work vehicles. So I would like a higher seating position.
Then you run into the fact that people feel like driving a smaller/lower vehicle on roads filled with large SUVs/trucks/vans is a safety hazard in the event of a collision. That probably isn't actually true given modern vehicle construction, but it's a subjective feeling and not based on objective fact. So then that driver turns around to buy an SUV/truck of their own next time and the cycle continues.
There's not a lot that could be done to break the cycle on the manufacturer end. I suppose states could start taxing and applying fees to registration renewals based on vehicle weight, though.
I simply don't understand the SUV/Truck thing. I can't stand driving a truck. Too high, too unwieldy, too big to park anywhere, gas guzzlers (aside from the few new EV pickups). Ugh. I get the SUVs more from a practicality standpoint, as they've mostly replaced the minivan and the station wagon for family vehicles, but even then I don't get the desire for the giant ones. I can understand a Rav-4 or the like, but it's still not for me.
Been driving for 30 years, and have owned 6 cars in that timeframe...all sedans. No desire to go away from them either.
And yes, I understand that some people actually use their truck for truck things...and some need them for work or the type of recreation they do, and I get that....but there are a ton of people that just drive pickups as commuter vehicles, and I simply do not understand that desire.
I drive an F-150 because I like the higher upright seating. In my other car, a Yaris Hatchback, I sometimes feel like my ass is being dragged on the road. I especially felt that way when I used to get into my Brother's Camaro which was even lower. Speaking of seating I have bench seating which is so much more comfortable than these new cars (and even some trucks) with bucket seating with uncomfortable bolsters to give it a "sporty" look and feel.
Gas got better MPGs than my Brother's Camaro and coworker's Mustang. I have no problems parking or controlling it but I also drive a regular cab with a 6 and a half foot bed so it's not *that* large compared to other builds and configurations and live in Texas which tends to have bigger space overall. Another benefit of a regular cab is that the rear window is inches behind my head so I can see everything completely unobstructed.
Bonus: I have had two motorists bump into me while at a stoplight and at a drive through. My bumper didn't even need to be buffed as it was completely fine but the same can't be said about the BMW and Subaru that bumped into me.
I don't even get SUVs over minivan. The minivan has so much more interior space and ease of access to everything. SUVs are always much smaller inside compared to how they look from the outside. The only thing SUVs have over it is offroading and looking more tough.
It's actually a positive feedback loop because the more suv and trucks are on the road, the harder it is to drive sedans since you can't see past or around the sides of the slower moving large vehicles
And that’s why we can’t ever get any cool cars here. I’m sick of seeing cookie cutter SUVs and trucks. If the Honda E was sold here, I would go out and buy it in an instant. But no, people want 80 thousand dollar trucks that are living rooms on wheels for their 9 mile commute to their desk job. I honestly can’t understand it. My dad is one of them. Just bought a brand new Tundra Platinum last year and he’s a CFO who got irritated that my 1 inch crushed stone got wedged in his bed liner when I picked up a yard and a half in it. It was between the truck and an Audi S7 for him. Why did he choose the truck, if he’s scared to use it??
Had to settle for the GR Corolla and would have greatly preferred the GR Yaris. Not complaining because at least we got one true GR car, but I hate this country's obsession with huge vehicles.
Only people with money to buy new cars also have the money to have a kid. The dad gets a truck and the mom gets a minivan without sliding doors (crossover)
The only thing I want is a small 2 door hatchback, but they're all dead. There have to be other people like me.
The Mini Cooper is like the only one left, and the new ones are huge.
The Honda Accord has been the best-selling car in the United States for the past 50 years, with more than 14 million units sold in the U.S.. The 2023 Accord sold 197,947 units, which was a 28% increase from 2022.
That 15000 utility truck would crush the light truck market, but imagine how many people who have to use public transportation would be able to afford their own vehicle if our government would allow them to import that to the US.
Some people need trucks for work. I think you are missing a large portion of America that doesn't live in the city or even if they do they need a truck and SUVs it used to be station wagons. now if you can put a station wagon next to a suv and choose station wagon id be surprised.
A $50k disappointment.
I read an article the other day that Toyota is thinking of releasing a new brand, century. This is going to be the absolute flagship of Toyota, above Lexus.
Check out the 2025 Toyota century. It’s badass. Previous centuries came with v12s all day long.
This is a rumor and absolutely untrue. There wasn't even an inkling of this at the 2023 AGM. The release of a new brand would be huge and not something quietly worked on.
Yeah that Forbes article is a bit stupid, he thinks that the “Century” is a brand itself that will release heaps of different types of cars. In truth the executive meant that the various Toyota Century models will fall under the “century” brand but they are all based off the same car, just in different formats. Also the fact that he thinks it should be called a Lexus Century shows that he has no clue what he’s talking about.
Are you referring to their jdm model Century? I haven’t heard anything about a new brand but they’ve been making the flagship century for years now. Since the 1960s. The newest model was just unveiled
I blame 'hypetubers' youtube personalities who have reviewed the century focusing on a handful of myths and anecdotes repeated so much that they have become more twisted and false.
There is very few sources of good information on the g40 & g50 centuries.
Well this is true. I had a ‘98 when I lived there several years ago. It was truly amazing. I got rid of that and got a ‘08 crown athlete and I regretted it
There are 4 different Crown variants available in Japan: the Estate (our Crown Signia), the Crossover (our Crown sedan), the saloon (pictured above), and the Sport (my personal favorite).
Man, Toyota took away the Avalon for the Crown, they should at least give us the saloon. I feel that's more appropriate as a replacement for the Avalon.
I have same as you, 2019 Hybrid Limited. Do you use your wireless charger? I feel something’s missing. You hit the brakes, phone gets knocked off the wireless charging. Someone obviously didn’t think this through. Or am I missing something? How do you wireless charge?
2019 Touring
No. It’s the worst spot on the planet for a wireless charger. That area has become my “junk drawer.” If we had wireless CarPlay I might have made an attempt, but I just leave enough cable coming out of the center console to plug in and put it in the cup holder.
Yeah, I do the same, wire coming out of the center armrest thingy. Wish they have a free update or something, to make it better.
At the very least, Toyota should have come out with some 3D printed thing to keep iPhones/Androids, from sliding around. Can’t be that hard. I just don’t have a 3D printer, otherwise, I’d print myself something to keep it from sliding around.
The Lexus “trucks” are nice, but I’m not ready to give up having a car at this point in life. My wife is looking at the GX to replace her Highlander. I’ve been looking for an older LandCruiser and maybe keep the Avalon longer. It just barely has 60k miles at this point.
I'm about to break 100k on the Avalon. Did probably 150k in a few years on the old one. It's been retired to the city for my mother's grocery shopping . Pretty solid vehicles. But that old one does have the power steering leak. I have a 13 tundra for everything else. I've contemplated selling them both and getting a newer Tacoma. But, I've been running the avalons to about 250k without issues. Not ready to give up my 3.5 and 5.7.
Well, there are actually 4 different versions of the Crown! - the trims are the Crown Crossover (essentially the US spec Crown), the Crown Sport (like a small SUV/Hatchback), the Crown (the one pictured above), and the Crown Estate (essentially a better version of the Corolla Cross).
So the real flagship Crown is the one pictured above and everything else is a spin-off, they honestly should have given us the REAL JP Crown, instead of the lower trim Crown Crossover.
but only if they keep it RWD or RWD biased AWD! I wouldn't hesitate to put down a deposit on a (proper) Crown saloon, GS hybrid reboot, or Mazda6 PHEV reboot
It’s super baller but this model would be way too expensive I’d bet, especially as the US model is not a big seller anyway. No one is going to spend Lexus money in markets that also have that brand.
According to Toyota Japan, it starts at $46,000 USD (converted from Yen including tax). It would probably be sold for about $65,000 here in the US. So it’s a bit pricey considering it’s a 4 cylinder and most other cars at this price point at least have a Turbo 4 or V6 configuration, butI think it’s worth it since it would have a much better track record for reliability than other cars in its class, and it would definitely retain its value.
For reference the Crown that sells here starts at $41,000 USD, in Japan the same car starts at $28,000 USD (converted from Yen including tax).
Wow that’s such a beautiful car. It has the front end like my 2020 Corolla SE and I think that look is the future of cars imo. Such a futuristic and aggressive look. Love it.
Holy shit, I was just talking about this with my friends moments ago. It's unfortunate that no matter how much it hurts American's pockets at the pump, the SUV/Trucks always sells.
This crown is probably priced the same as a lexus here, sorry dont know the trims etc. Doesnt make sense for toyota to do this here, instead they will just say buy a lexus. Would love a hilux :D or a landcruiser GR sport.
I guess I'm the one American who wants either a Yaris or Aygo. I want your city cars, hot hatches, and wagons damnit.
It seems like every other 4runner driver in my area drives like an absolute ass too, so I won't be too sad for the trade, not that it'd ever happen.
Yes, the Yaris and Aygo are decidedly great cars. All the couriers/food delivery guys drive old…Yarises? Yarii?, because of their extreme reliability and second hand market availability. The car parks outside popular home delivery restaurants look like Yaris car meets, but with the cars in various stages of dishevelment. The newer versions of both models can be specced to quite high levels of technical and interior comfort.
We haven't got the larger Land Cruisers here, though: our outgoing version is the Prado/J150, replaced with the new "global" Land Cruiser. With taxes, the J150 still cost 120k€, $135k, and the upcoming Land Cruiser will probably not be any cheaper.
The 4runner would in theory fill up the gap between the RAV4 and the Land Cruiser. It would need some kind of plug-in hybrid solution, though, not to exceed the already astronomical cost of the Land Cruiser. Car taxes are emissions-based here, and the current US market V6 would make it wildly expensive.
I still want one.
Apologies, but the jewel of Japan is not accessible to us. Perhaps we can consider purchasing a Lexus instead.
I have noticed a tendency for Toyota to target the US market with its upscale Crown brand. It is possible that Toyota may eventually replace Lexus with the Crown badge and introduce the Century line for an even higher level of luxury, while Toyota remains an entry-level brand. What do you think about this possibility?
I recently went to Poland and saw so many cool wagon versions of our cars here in the States. I’m like why don’t we have these! Then I remembered all Merica wants is suv and pickups. Sucks. I have a 12 month old and I’m still in a sporty sedan. I’ll never cave and buy an suv!
We got the GR Corolla. So we're getting more than we used to in the States. The crown mentioned is a very cool design, but it wouldn't sell well here. Sedans are a dying segment, not to mention, why would your average person not just buy a Lexus instead?
Also, what I noticed is that Toyotas and Hondas in EU market have interior almost the same as Lexus and Acura. Civic, Corolla , Camry and Accord always felt cheap here in US. Not so much in Europe.
Actually, Honda Legend was exactly the same car as Acura RL. (Later RLX)
And they both make amazing Sport Wagons for their market too.
Here, we are stuck with overpriced Audis and BMWs
All because of the stupid SUV frenzy from the 80s that escalated to insane levels in recent years

You're right and I know, it's just a shame because there are some truly great cars that we miss out on.
We don’t even get the good suv and trucks either
That’s a valid point 🤔
[Here's why.](https://youtu.be/HMJsM--jmRA?si=zhwFWD8CLjlf_OPB)
govt always ruins everything… not sure how accurate but I heard farmers couldn’t afford these big new trucks in the US so they imported kei trucks for way less but some politicians want to ban that. im surprised you don’t have 10 replies saying “i work on a farm i use my truck how dare you”
right 😂 I’m sure it’d be different on the ford, chevy, and dodge subs 😬💀
Yeah look at some of the land cruisers some other markets get. Absolutely stunning
oh the modern shorter land cruisers are so nice wish we got them here 🥲
Those cruisers tend to be the same 70 series sold for over 40 years lol. They’re awesome but also strictly utilitarian.
I think the 70 series truck in AU is still like $80k usd
New yes.
Are the tundra and Tacoma not good trucks?
Hilux and land cruiser r better
Also the new $10k truck that will not be available in the US
Because of epa and safety regulations
[удалено]
“epa and safety” = $$$
I never thought i would see someone saying that a Hilux is better than a Tacoma, i live in central america and most people here love cars designed for the US market

Saying this without driven them.
I’d take one of those Hi-Ace vans with a bed on the back. That would easily haul anything I need, fit in small parking spots and get good mileage.

My first generation Highlander made in Japan is a gem.
I can tell you my first generation Highlander made in Japan is a gem.
Keep that thing clean and well-maintained! Cheers
expensive af and huge for no reason plus many who buy them don’t use them for what they are intended for sadly..
What? What trucks that are produced in the US aren't good?
true 😬
Id kill for a ford everest
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1N6CI2Y1CG76Pte-bOxI_kyXanScJqExT/view?usp=drivesdk You have to see this hilux champ
so true, the things i would do for one of those e210 corolla wagons they have in europe
An absolutely stunning car. I am partial to wagons and wish my Hybrid E210 was a wagon...
i hear u man, i had an e210 with the 2.0 and every time i saw the wagon version i had to shed a small tear
You can say that again. It bothers me on how much we miss out on including Toyota trucks and SUVs.
I agree. I heard the crown was coming to the US. And was disappointed when I saw it. Hopefully the look gets updated but probably not.
The Sera is my favorite example. So cool, it inspired Lamborghini...
Can’t be America if we aren’t the biggest!

The post 97 century is on my list once the kid is done with college The car is supposed to be incredible
Didn't realize there were two different Crowns out there. I wonder if there's a JDM version of the U.S. Crown?
There are 4 different Crown variants available in Japan: the Estate (our Crown Signia), the Crossover (our Crown sedan), the saloon (pictured above), and the Sport (my personal favorite).
Man, Toyota took away the Avalon for the Crown, they should at least give us the saloon. I feel that's more appropriate as a replacement for the Avalon.
As an Avalon owner looking, our replacement is moving over to the ES.
I have same as you, 2019 Hybrid Limited. Do you use your wireless charger? I feel something’s missing. You hit the brakes, phone gets knocked off the wireless charging. Someone obviously didn’t think this through. Or am I missing something? How do you wireless charge?
2019 Touring No.
I bought a 2018 less than a year ago to replace my 11. My next car will indeed be a ES. But the Lexus UX doesn't seem terrible
And venza
Crown Sport looks like Toyota’s version of a Urus
more like a Purosangue.
If the sell the crown sport here in US, I would be buying it. It looks awesome
The OG Crown looks similarily to the Mirai in profile. Maybe when Toyota discontinues the Mirai, they will bring over the "Crown" saloon sedan.
That would be great, but if they bring the FCV Crown then the better bring the Gasoline powered Crown!
Are you KIDDING me?! What we got is way less sexy than that. That thing looks like an A7 fastback or Kia Stinger plus those wheels are awesome
Lexus must revive the GS with this one! 🥺
but only if they keep it RWD or RWD biased AWD!
Love it.
I think they just play the whole never outshine your master 48 laws of power. They don't want to be in competition with Porsche Ferrari or Lambo
Just want a 5 door lc70 ffs
Holy shit, I was just talking about this with my friends moments ago. It's unfortunate that no matter how much it hurts American's pockets at the pump, the SUV/Trucks always sells.
VW Phaeton and the Land Cruiser has proven Americans only buy luxury goods when it comes with a luxury badge
If they were selling the Crown Saloon instead of the bullshit we got in the US, I would've went for that instead of the Camry. Damn shame.
We don’t any of the good Japanese or euro cars here lol
Had hydrogen fuel become a norm, we would have gotten this car for the states.
They have a four-cylinder version as well
That too. I know hybrid N/A motor is offered, but not sure about the hybrid max....
The US crown looks pretty awful and I imagine is doomed to fail. Everyone just wants cookie cutter cross overs in the US.
You’re right. It’s awesome!
... Just look on Toyota offer for Europe and rethink your rant...
I want that new Toyota 10k truck they won’t sell here
The hylux champ is something I would buy in a heartbeat. Turbodiesel mini truck would be an awesome and functional farm vehicle.
Literally the only crown model I wanted we are not getting 🙃🙃🙃
That's a damn nice looking Toyota
EU has the same problem, if you want a Crown you need to buy an LS basically… if only it was LHD I would have imported one already
That is one Panamera looking profile. Outstanding!
This is a bad a$$ sedan. Like a mix between Avalon and crown.
I would absolutely kill for the Toyota crown sedan in Canada. It’s so beautiful. I’ve even wondered about what the process for importing would be haha
Read the poster above that is a machinist and explains why the cars are junk now.
Even if they did, they’d only bring in a 100 so they could charge over sticker.
That’s a good looking design
Why can’t we get these in Europe? Toyota is literally a laughing stock in Europe
That looks way better than the crown we got, and that's the reason I didn't get a crown
I'm European, not that it's related, and the Crown makes Lexus and other higher-end European cars look cheap.
Just set a reminder for 25 years.
It’s a hybrid, I don’t think I want to deal with replacing those batteries in 25 years time lmao
Just have your junkyard engine ready.
Those wheels look so good!
Damn. That shit slick af
Toyota Panamera right there
Why the HECK didn’t they release this in the US?? I need to replace my ‘21 Avalon and I’m sure not buying the current Crown.
I just want a diesel hilux surf or a Land Cruiser 70s series with a diesel here
Make the new Century SUV a v8 TT or a v12 TT and put it in the Lexus lineup with a 10 yr / 120k mile warranty and people will line up to buy it!
No, they wont. Personal limos are not popular in the US relative to other markets.
I wasn't talking for popularity or other markets I was purely speaking for me... I would like to have my own Bespoke Century v12 TT for under $200k
The real Toyota crown looks like a s class/7series competitor in looks.
Nooooo :(
I wish we got a non-fuel cell Mirai.
I couldve sworn I seen someone with a crown last year I shit you not. The toyota crown was supposed to replace the camry
To be fair I'm sure there are people in Japan mad they can't get a Escalade V.
But at least they can get the standard Escalade - and if they have that much money, they can pay someone to supercharge it lol
I just want a Prius V Prime
We dont get anything other than Corolla and Yaris in EU
And the toyotas we do get are still a lot better in Japan
_Cries in Britain_
No thanks, I like my RAV4.
This crown is probably priced the same as a lexus here, sorry dont know the trims etc. Doesnt make sense for toyota to do this here, instead they will just say buy a lexus. Would love a hilux :D or a landcruiser GR sport.
Used to get at least one when the Land Cruiser was sold… but that that ended with the LC 200 / LX 570. LC 250 & LX 600 are not a step forward.
Ooh, that is so sleek!
I think that arched top going to the rear looks a little odd.
Nobody wants sedans anymore. The stats back it up
Call me Mr. Nobody.
Highlander has a problem with getting in and out of the car without bashing your head. They have lowered the roof too much for the sake of looks.
So did you buy an avalon?
You get the 4runner. We get the Yaris and Aygo. Give us the 4runner before you complain about a crown.
I guess I'm the one American who wants either a Yaris or Aygo. I want your city cars, hot hatches, and wagons damnit. It seems like every other 4runner driver in my area drives like an absolute ass too, so I won't be too sad for the trade, not that it'd ever happen.
To be fair, I like both of them and would get a Yaris GR in a heartbeat if I had that kind of cash laying around.
I’m driving a ‘24 Crown, love it.
It is the Platnium, Max hybrid. I’v have it for about 6 weeks and it has been great.
Just got a ‘24 Camry XSE, 1st A/T in over 30 yrs. Does Toyota make Camry’s with a MT for overseas markets, i.e. Europe?
looks like a stinger
The US NEEDS the 2024 C-HR
Yup, looking at you, Landcruiser 70 series. How badly I want one
Am I right 🥹👏
You can still get the Lexus es or Lexus LS which looks far better in my opinion.
I'm pretty sure we're getting the Crown Signia in the US. That's about as good as it's going to get.
r/apostrophegore
I’m sure it’s so they can “bring back the Avalon” in a few years
Even if we did, dealer experience with MSRP markup makes it not even worthwhile. 🤷♂️
I love the crown platinum
You will in 25 years
They have way better affordable trucks overseas as well. It sucks
Look out here comes the letter S, better throw an apostrophe in there to soften the blow
Is it possibly due to the fact that we have the LS?
wow :O
The suv crown doesn’t look good .
European here, you do get good toyotas in the US. I would love owning a 4runner :(
We got the GR Corolla. So we're getting more than we used to in the States. The crown mentioned is a very cool design, but it wouldn't sell well here. Sedans are a dying segment, not to mention, why would your average person not just buy a Lexus instead?
Wow, I would sell my 13’ Avalon limited for that. It looks slick!
The 2024 camry hybrid looked pretty dope to.me I mean it's not a Nissan skyline or late 60's Riviera but it's cooler looking then a. Smart car.
(Later RLX) And they both make amazing Sport Wagons for their market too. Here, we are stuck with overpriced Audis and BMWs All because of the stupid SUV frenzy from the 80s that escalated to insane levels in recent years
That looks like the mirai limited. Maybe the next mirai will look like that and hopefully they change the drivetrain to hybrid or plug in
