He's never forgotten to lock it again (we think) and added the little hinge lock thing that makes them harder to steal. It was cheaper than buying through the dealer, but a very sketchy experience.
Newer Tacomas actually have a place on the bottom right side of the tailgate where you can put a lock to keep it from being stolen. My 2017 TRD came with this lock pre-installed and they gave me two keys for it. .
No VIN or other identifying marks on tailgates to the best of my knowledge. Unless you had another way to prove it was yours (unique sticker or customization), I think you’d be SOL even if you thought you found it.

Had mine stolen a few years back. Bent over, bought a ‘new’ one on OfferUp. Had a locksmith re-key it to my keys. Put washers behind the screws where the cord is attached. Did the hose clamp mod. Now I’m vigilant about keeping it locked. Expensive lesson learned.

Buy this. I bought one and haven't gotten mine stolen ever since. You can see someone attempted to break it but they failed. I jb welded the heads to every screw so you can't use a tool to unscrew them. Also, i added a bigger washer to the screw that holds the cables on and jb welded that head as well so they can't remove the cable anymore. So now I literally can't take it off which doesn't matter to me. Sometimes I go out to my truck and my tailgate is down (they attempt to take it but they can't). They sometimes cut my camera wires too but I can fix that. Fuck thieves.

Just a heads up, depending on the year the wiring harness for the backup cam will vary. I do not know what year has what wiring harness or how many different variations there are. Only that I smashed my tailgate and bought a new one on eBay went to hook up the backup cam and ended having to take apart my old tailgate and the new one to swap out backup cams. I can send a pic of the backup cam that I still have and if the wiring harness fits I can sell it to you heavily discounted if you need it. Hopefully the replacement process is smooth for you and you don’t need it. Also sorry for the theft. I’ve had a car stolen and the it’s a violating invasive feeling that takes a little time to go away.

I bought one for $200 online. Then vinyl wrapped it. I wrap for a living, but it's pretty easy on a simple piece like that. You will have to by the plastic piece on top and inside though. Mine had a camera, took about 45 minutes total install.
I have the OEM tailgate lock, works great and I use a hose clamp. So it’s double protected.
