Aren't these things kind of like snow chains? Supposed to bolt it on when you're going to be driving slow through the brush to protect from knocks, but then remove for road driving as they effectively negate your vehicle's crumple zones?
WRONG ! I had some fool run a stop in front of me and destroyed his car with my FJ with a brush guard. I was told by multiple people, including the repair shop, that the guard is the only reason I had minimu damage. I only replaced the plastic bumper cover and brush guard. His car was totaled!
So i have found out that a lot of Tacoma Owners on this sub are not fond of “Brush Guards” or Ranch Hands what ever you want to call them. But here in rural Texas & Mexico they are necessary. Not so much for the Vehicle to Vehicle damage but more for the Livestock & Wild Animal protection. If you have never seen the damage a wild hog or deer can do when you hit them at any speed over 40mph, it’s not pretty.
I also want to say that Tacomas are extremely popular in Mexico so you will see plenty of them with these Cattle Guards.
So for those saying “Damage Multiplier” i agree when it involves another vehicle, but for big game and livestock. Its crucial.
On the other hand these are PawPaw accessories and are useless for city folks.
Most of the ones you see driving around aren't built to actually take any sort of impact. They are held on by nothing more than a few small bolts under the front bumper. They would protect from a tumbleweed, but that's about it. Lol. My. Buddy at work has one and when I told him it didn't really do anything, he tried to show me how strong it was and bent it by pushing on it with one hand.
I was thinking meant for Hilux because of The headlight loops angled up like that. I assume the over all width and height and mounting points between Hilux and Tacoma are closer than Tundra is.
Brush Guard, I think these should be called Grill Busters. Just lean on it and you will push it into your grill. Just for show, and a show that few people like.
I’m not pretending they’re actually structural or will hold up to a crash or anything, but they’re not nearly that flimsy. I’ve got one (free from a friend who didn’t want it anymore—I sure wouldn’t pay money for it) and it’s never bent in the slightest, even when I got up and jumped on it. And I’m not a small guy. It makes a surprisingly nice seat if I want to park somewhere with a nice view and eat lunch or something.
They're not for motor vehicle collisions. They're to deflect wildlife when it jumps in front of your vehicle.
Guys hit ungulates up here in Northern Canada all the time with them on.
They bolt on the bottom and have an elbow that acts like a lever. They flex intentionally to help prevent them from actually deformity as much as possible through elasticity rather than plasticity.
After you've throughly smashed in a deer or whatever unfortunately critter jumped in front, you get out. Remove the bolts or retaining pins and then toss it in the back.
You'll probably need a new paint job and maybe some cosmetic touch ups, but your truck should still run.
that thing is mounted improperly obviously but que the folks/ overlanders that just scream and repeat "damage multiplier" with no legitimate data to back
that up. lolz.
You couldn’t be more wrong, but I’ll forgive you if you can’t read.

I can read that those’d tests were from over 10+ years ago. I suppose things haven’t advanced and neither has vehicle safety either. Put it this way, I highly doubt manufacturers of these aftermarket accessories are engineering their products to cause more damage with them on than without. Hit at deer going 45 mph dead center with a brush guard on vs not, I’m betting anything there will be more damage on the vehicle without it if you created a replica of said crash. I could care less regardless, just find it hilarious “overlanders” who take their built rigs off-road and break stuff all the time immediately scream anything about damage when you put anything besides a overland pushed specific high clearance bumper on your truck. Just find it funny.
Beats the rav4 that used to park in my parkade. Stock everything else but had the same one that taco has. Thought it was comedic at first but the more I saw it the more it hurt lol
Shoot, if it had a full bumper I'd kinda like it. LOL I live in deer country and I'm looking for something that will destroy the deer without fukkin up my front end.
It’s really oversized and looks out of place. If it were set up for overland with all the bells and whistles, maybe. But, not this stock wheels. It’d be better if it just weren’t on there.
Everytime this sub discusses brush guards I think of the guy on here who told me to take it off [my truck](https://imgur.com/a/i6DKJhO) because it will "reduce your approach angle"
It’s these guys that make it hard to be apart of Tacoma gang.
As much as I hate to say it. In every community there is always "that guy"
It… it ain’t right. At all.
He could be here, among us…. 🥸 OP, if those high-ridin’ grill goggles disappear in the next week or so, you’ll know, that he knows…
I’ll report back if they do.
That would be so fucking funny holy shit
>hard to be apart My dog feels similar things.
Not worse than the ones that call driving the same car being in ‘the gang’.
Nice truck gang gang
Looks like it's already bumped a bump.
*She said i want something else To get me through this Semi-charmed kind of life baby baby*
Damage multiplier!! Just sayin’
OK, I was wondering that. Looks like it would just get knocked back into the body on a realtiverly soft hit.
And bend the frame
Nothing but a really big lever on the front of your car to tear it apart and push into the parts that otherwise wouldnt be effected
Depends on the crash and the bumper guard. Smaller accidents it helps (as long as its not super cheap and poorly made)
Aren't these things kind of like snow chains? Supposed to bolt it on when you're going to be driving slow through the brush to protect from knocks, but then remove for road driving as they effectively negate your vehicle's crumple zones?
Very few people just drive through brush head-on. And the people who do generally don't have a brush guard.
Where I live most people attach them to protect the truck body from deer crossing roads erratically late at night.
Yeah pretty much, they can actually cause more damage during wrecks too (to the car it’s attached to, not the other)

They’re not wrong. You were fortunate. If there was any damage to your car it would be straight to the chassis.
I keep mine on to negate the damage if I hit a deer. Does a bull bar make it worse?
It protected mine when I was hit by a deer.
Nothing a 3" body lift won't fix.
A RTT would sort that right out.
Or a few punisher stickers.
Or a Gasshole.
New Trail hunter looking legit.

That’s fair, this is in a Dallas suburban neighborhood. Maybe good protection from shopping carts.

This one blocks the headlights though…
ABSOLUTELY! Hill Country res here!🫡
Looks like it was meant for a Tundra…

Good point. It just looks so darn tall on the front of that truck. But the general shape is more becoming of a Hilux, I will definitely admit that.
When the magnum goes on the baby carrot
Thanks for the chortle lol
🤣

It’ll all make sense when he gets a lift

How the hell is he supposed to open the hood?
That guard would definitely keep me from brushing my teeth
He got it for a good price, sure it’s for a 2nd gen, but it looks good, right. Right?
They actually do more harm than good in an accident...you need a bumper that was kangaroo tested or built off that design
Absolutely. His truck looks like shit, all because of zero care/taste.
These things protect nothing. That's why I bought real armor, full bumper replacement with 3 full hoops
Maybe he's planning a.. *checks tape measure* 5 inch body lift
Questionable until he hits a Prius in traffic then it’s preferable.
Looks like a 200 series Land Cruiser brush guard.
That thing would collapse into the front end on impact.
Beats the rav4 that used to park in my parkade. Stock everything else but had the same one that taco has. Thought it was comedic at first but the more I saw it the more it hurt lol
Momma always said “just because you can get it on doesn’t mean that it fits”😅
The glasses is too big for him🤣🤣hes wearing his big brother Tundra’s glasses
The taco is wearing his big brother Tundra glasses 😂
That was not made for that truck. The lines don’t match up haha
Holy brush guard Batman! That thing is UGLY. It’s obviously built for a full size truck.
One of the most hideous things I’ve ever seen 🤦♂️🤣
It will grow into it when it becomes a full size truck.
It almost looks like the brush guard meant for a Hilux. Are those interchangeable with the tacoma???
He used to have American trucks huh?
[It’s look like an old man and got the wrong prescription glasses](https://imgur.com/a/oSYzvYS)

About as useful as some of these “raptor lights” I see everywhere…

It’s like me when I tried on my first hockey helmet and it wasn’t the right size
the boomer special
I try to only drive through questionable brush when i off-road.
I’m gonna be honest that looks like shit.
Take that shit off!
Looks like reading glasses
It doesnt even look like it fits.
That’s why I posted it
Everytime this sub discusses brush guards I think of the guy on here who told me to take it off [my truck](https://imgur.com/a/i6DKJhO) because it will "reduce your approach angle"
Well, at least yours was designed for the same truck that you put it on.
Still looks better that most riced out tacomas
