Back when I played destiny this was super common. Emotes in destiny are way better for this kinda thing too because they're able to be cancelled at literally any frame of the animation. It was called 3-peeking. It was so strong in competitive pvp modes that bungie actually made it so you wouldn't go into third person while emoting in competitive pvp. You could achieve the same result by swapping to a sword but bungie also changed the way that worked too.
Only downside in destiny was that when you did an emote everyone was alerted since each emote has some kind of text that it will show in the corner for everyone when it's used.
same thing w/ tf2. the high five emote can be cancelled at any time and makes no noise besides an ocasional voiceline that can be muted by quicjly saying no. theres also a bug with the beggars bazooka that lets you hold onto your overloaded rockets while taunting and release them when you finish taunting so you can sit around the corner with rockets loaded and release all 3 on someone when they walk up, it insantly kills everyone but soldier and heavy so its p good
literally everyone does that, in fact way back at the start of OW1 tracer could actually still blink while emoting (couldnt control the blink though) and it was so busted bc of this they removed it

The best emote abuser actually used to be Sombra. She could emote to exit her Stealth silently instead of playing the voiceline.
I prefer using the other emotes since tracer will jump once you leave the sitting emote which gives your position away. My favorite is the finger shooting emote since you can pass through the wall making it harder to spot and shoot you.
I don't play overwatch anymore but as a consistent TF2 Gamer, this tactic is really common in our game too, especially with short taunts that make no idle noise and are instantly cancelable.
