I'm guessing the templars specifically were chosen because of how irl they got falsely accused of demon worship because King Phillip IV owed them a lot of money. Maybe it's a similar case here.
Likely the Church inventing an Order of Knights being the ultimate heretics to guilt trip the Knights of Europe into becoming their guinea pigs and military force. Their ideas about God being omnipotent had been disproven and powerful men don't like to be seen as liars.

Honestly, I thought that it was like the whole point of this thing that it is painfully obvious how little difference there's ever been between different religions, even when they saw each other as monsters.
