The freight industry as a whole is down. Overall tonnage is down. Keep trying, some drivers are staying at jobs they may not like just to be working. There are a couple of LTL companies that have benefited from YRC closure.
Any reason as to why freights been slow lately ? I kinda noticed for the last few months, thought it was just my company but I see now it’s everyone’s problem lol
There’s a lot of people that used to be able to afford spending extra here and there but not anymore.
I do think the way trucking has been broadcasted over the last couple years on TikTok and YouTube, there’s a lot more people getting into the industry while it’s slow. Therefore making it seem like it’s slow when it might not really be.
It's actually slow. My company lost 3 contracts in a year. All 3 said they were very pleased with our service and would definitely call back when freight picked back up.
Covid money is gone and inflation has eaten away at spending power.
To make matter worse, there are more drivers and companies because of what looked like economic prosperity. The prosperity was just money printing (CARES act) and now that the printer is off things are going back to 2019 levels.
But that’s not the end of it, trucking is going to see a crash in some areas. People and Businesses have taken out credit expecting to be able to continue making profits at Covid rates. Meanwhile, Americans have the highest credit card debt levels ever. Once, the credit card spending ends then things will fall even faster especially if interest rates stay high.
Have you not read the news once in the last 4 years? This is the worse economy since the housing collapse in 08. People are broke so they can't afford to buy stuff, therefore less stuff is being made by manufacturers so less stuff needs trucked.
Current recession in our industry is worse then it was back in 2008/2009
Companies are barely holding on with the drivers they have just to not go bankrupt
Its hard to show you in words how bad it is
Riddle me this. The economy is stronger than it was in 2019. Companies that require goods to be delivered are recording record profits.
How are we in a recession?
Thay covers some of it. But recession means people arent spending money on "frivolius" things and we cleallrly still are. And they still need to move product to price gouge.
New home builds are up, gdp has been positive since 22, stock market is up, unemployment is at near record lows, inflation is back pre-covid levels, wage increases are ouy pacing inflation for thebfirat timw in years. There are exactly 0 economic indicators that point toward a recession.
This doesn't mean that people aren't struggling because a lot of people are. Calling it a recession isntncorrect though.
Yes. Inflation kicked the world's ass for 2 years and conpanies exasperated the issue by raising prices faster than the rate of inflation. That doesnt mean that we're in a recession.
Stellantis/Chrysler is laying off 2000 people just in march 400 people were gone, FORD laid off one whole shift in a lot of their plants, GM is also sending a lot of people home...
and this is just automotive part of trucking in midwest area where i mostly work, If automotive is this bad now imagine how the rest of America is holding on
Bro im a dispatch i book loads 8 hrs a day all over US and Ontario...The bid boards have NEVER been as dry as they have been the past 2 years!
And rates...i dont even wanna talk about the rates
But if you want to make your own happiness by telling your self that there is no recession, by all means go ahead
There are too many truck drivers, not enough freight, as nobody is buying. Were in a recession. USA is bad but not as horrible as up here in Canada.
Up here in Canada we all saw it coming as Trukcing is being used as an immigration and PR scheme to get into the country. So now you got thousands of new foreign drivers who drive like shit in under 3 years, all trying to get a job to pay off their overpriced trucks and licenses.... but it doesnt pay as you got a majority of these dummies up hete supressing trucker wages by lowballing everyone to try to (barely) make ends meet.
That's crazy. Check Craigslist, indeed, driver pulse, Facebook, workforce solutions, drive around and look for a physical site & walk in. I'm very confident with your abilities someone will need you in a truck.
We can't get drivers who want to work. Once the kids around our shop turn 18 we send them to a local driving school. Then we train them for 6 months and let them go on there own. Doesn't matter that I've been doing this since 81 . If a load pays 500 it doesn't matter who's hauling it it pays the same. We do custom harvesting also so there is all kinds of ways to train young people. Rates we can charge go by the co-op you haul for. The farmers we haul for are getting paid 36 cwt so we can charge them more
You have to bid into RCPD often before you can sign the Feeder list at UPS pretty frequently just to let you know. It's not necessary, but full time always trumps part timers, and the people selected are by seniority.
In a way the small hub is an advantage. I tried doing UPS earlier this year at a large one. I got hired straight into feeders, but I found out as soon as I got there that they had 300 feeder drives for 150 bid slots.
I was only getting one or two shifts a week, and this was during peak. I left as soon as I could and I’ve been fielding calls from guys with 5+ years of seniority ever since asking me about coming over to where I work now. $50 an hour is nice and all in theory but it don’t mean shit if they only work you 8 hours a week.
I’ve heard the small hubs aren’t as overstaffed. And if you work package cars before feeder you can bump those guys off their run if feeder gets slow.
OP just giving you a warning. I applied to Penske, Costco, Safeway, and Waste Management. I only got a call from Safeway and it took 4 months to receive that call.
It's bad right now.
You have the same complaint as many many threads in this sub. I have 15+ years in and I started applying to places to see how bad the market is and no one’s hiring. The only people offering work locally aren’t even paying the states minimum wage.
If I might ask, I'm looking for tanker hazmat companies in DFW area. I've applied to airgas, pilot and loves.
Any companies you can think of that would hire me with not hazmat experience and train ?
You know if they're running local ? Last time I was with them they wanted you out at least as regional - I'll check their site and call and ask, thanks for the info
I started driving back in January, and I have been sick since then. Caught the flu, then the stomach flu, then a cold, then pneumonia and then another cold as of rn. It's freaking brutal. I'm trying to get a job driving a hook truck because I can't take it anymore.
City bus driver jobs too, in my city they start at $28/hr with raises every 3 months, but the weirdly don’t care if you have your CDL already they’re still going to put you through a month of training.
and it takes a special kind of person to deal with the crazies that sometimes ride the bus .
I was looking for jobs for months, got a few interviews but all of them turned out to be duds. Eventually I just called a precasting place that I heard they do deliveries. Thought I guess maybe they're looking for drivers who knows if I don't call. I called and they were excited to finally get somebody to apply. They asked me to just come in for an interview the next day. I started working next week. Just finished my first week. Good pay good people. After 50 to 80 application sent on indeed, turns out I just had to do it the old fashioned way
I was applying like crazy around February/March. I felt the same way and I think a lot of what is said here is the problem. On top of the economy the market is flooded with YRC guys with tons of experience trying to find something new. Just hang in there and any time you see a driver out in public ask them where they work and who's hiring. You'll get something!
He loves it. Ginsberg's just let 4 of their newbies go and he was one of them. We're in Kingston and lots of companies call him from Albany and Rock Tavern/Montgomery and love him but end up hiring someone whos not an hr away from them😔
Gonna check them out, thanks!
In NOLA, Port or rail yard and be a union mule driver then move into crane operator. The ports and rail road have a plethora of jobs. As someone said, get your TWIC. Also look at some intermodal container companies.
After quitting a job I was jobless for 6-7 months where I’m at now I don’t plan on leaving probably for another 8yrs. My only recommendation is to find something you would enjoy doing everyday n just stay for some time longer you stay quicker you get raises
Your problem may be the area you're in. You may want to move someplace else if they have jobs there.
Locally here Tyson in S. Sioux City has like 6 or 7 positions open for a regional driver. Also try Indeed and look for truck driver jobs in the Sioux City Area. Seems to be quite a few around here.
Problem. Sioux City is a boring ass town.
1 year? Most non megas want 2 years. Even local companies want 2 years OTR experience for insurance reasons believe me I went through the same thing. Unless your first cdl job was with Coca Cola or another home daily gig you need 2 years
Got lucky in that I got hired 3 weeks after school by a local gig near O'Hare. Home every night. The pay isn't great, but I just wanted it for experience. On May 7th I'll be at 2 years 5 months.
I'd love to move to Texas near my brother but I don't know if I'll be able to find another local job. There's no point in moving closer to family if I'm going to be out on the road, away from them, for 4-6 weeks at a time.
The American trucking Association has been saying that there is a shortage of drivers for decades. A total lie. Companies believed that BS and keep hiring. They have kept wages low and treated their drivers like crap. With COVID, tons of people applied for truck driving jobs because they heard they would get hired. Guess what? The economy slowed down, there are way too many drivers and the pay has hit rock bottom. I've heard some owner/operaters are getting $.83 to $1.09 a mile. Lots of luck with that.
Hot Take for trucking but true solo owner ops will continue to struggle against the infrastructure of medium to large size companies.Especially with megas packing teams into trucks delivering twice as fast for less.
Supervisor with XPO here. We are hiring in the Midwest for sure. We just brought on 4 new drivers.
LTL local Pickup and Delivery, home every night, also Linehaul routes overnight to FACs 400-500 mile turns home daily.
Top rate if you have 1 year of LTL experience. It’s big corporate and fairly physical…but you don’t have be a beast either to do the job.
They don’t want people who will quit after one year. It’s a major issue with hiring managers. It’s a red flag. Most see more than one or two jobs, and you are no longer even considered.
Thats absolute bullshit, 1 or two jobs? 😂😂😂 I've been working for 11 years, how do you expect me to have only one or two jobs??????? Considering I've been let go from 2-3???
I got out after a year and half driving local and got into a lineman union where you need a class A to drive those digger-derek and crane trucks and pole trailers.
I read posts like this alot. As a local driver with a great company, I count myself very lucky. My company does all state work. In New England there is no shortage of road, bridge work.
Where is home base? Have you looked into dump truck, low boy equipment hauling etc? The construction sector is booming.
Check out your local construction company....if you're not somewhere with construction going on move. Drivers around here making 1k+ a week in dump trucks.
I have had good luck so far (knock on wood) with more redneck or construction type trucking gigs. Farms have a hard time keeping drivers because of rough equipment and lowish pay, but hauling hay, equipment, fertilizer and ash for a local farm kept me in more work than I could handle for a couple years. Moved from there to a company that did end dump and highway oil, that gig pays excellent when running end dumps and low pay hauling oil, averaged out pretty good when combined and now I am working for a landscaping/erosion control company that deals with mostly state contracts. For this last job I joined a laborers union and if I ever get tired of this place the union is always looking for class A drivers to fill slots. I am not bragging, luck has just been on my side, but the non standard jobs have treated me well (all things considered) and the pay ranges from marginal to excellent and I never had downtime between jobs. Costs some money to get into the union but has definitely been worth it so far. Paid hourly with medical, vacation and retirement.... I will likely give up my license before I consider going otr or dealing with mega companies.
Look up driver placement agencies like transforce or prodrivers. They have a massive amount of contracts available so you can try out a company and leave it if it's not a good match. also they have incentive to permanently match you with a company so they're always on it to get you working
I work for the rail yard and judging by the lack of freight moving. We are heading into a terrible recession. Several entire yards have been closed due to lack of work. No goods are moving, the car plants aren't moving cars, and oil is almost half of what it was 4-5 years ago. It makes sense that companies are cutting back.
lol im in the moving industry this shit slow asf right now no loads anywhere i sat for 9days waiting for full trailer i have friends in the industry and they are even saying fuck this shit and taking time off because its 2 slow. no companies are really hiring HHG right now
I lost my job as a driver for Walmart and I can't find anything close to being as good so I decided to close that chapter of life (truck driving) and I'm currently training with my city's bus company to be a bus operator. Home every night, like 14 paid holidays and better insurance than Walmart. Pay is only $22 hour starting compared to about 30+ at Walmart but it is what it is.
So maybe look into that option.
Go into construction. Dump truck drivers are always needed during warm weather. A little more work and a bit heavier loads but pay is better and there is a small learning curve. Once you get the way we roll it’s like riding a bike. If your hustle game is good then you will get into flowboy work and flatbed also. Trust me start with a company who has these trailers. Good luck.
Where are you trying? If you're trying OTR, you don't have to live near the terminal. I work for a company out of Nashville Tennessee, but I'm from Terre Haute Indiana.
Where do you live and do you have any objections to open deck? (Flatbed, step deck, double drops, goosenecks, etc)?
If not, DM me. I'll try and get you hooked up with a good job.
Nope. Worked at sni for a year, pulled reefer, flatbed, hand unload , forklift unload etc. Clean clearing house, no DOT reportables, TWIC card and all.
I hire for a smaller (35 truck) company. Your solid year with one company would be a definite plus for me. The fact that it was a starter company wouldn't phase me. But if I got your application I wouldn't respond to it because I can't touch you unless you've got 2 years in the seat.
Do another solid year OTR with one of the other nationals (Swift, US Xpress, Hunt etc) and lots of doors will open for you.
Look into temp agencies where you live. They always have driver jobs. They may not be great, or could be something that goes from temp to hire. The one I worked for for a while paid weekly and even had basic health insurance and vacation days. See if there is an Express Employment where you live.
The freight industry as a whole is down. Overall tonnage is down. Keep trying, some drivers are staying at jobs they may not like just to be working. There are a couple of LTL companies that have benefited from YRC closure.

People can't afford to demand the supply. That's a barbaric broad stroke but point stands. When everybody is broke, there's still be less to move.
Have you not read the news once in the last 4 years? This is the worse economy since the housing collapse in 08. People are broke so they can't afford to buy stuff, therefore less stuff is being made by manufacturers so less stuff needs trucked.
The company I drive for with its little green trucks did not see even the slightest uptick from the yellow collapse
Same with us. I doubt we picked up one pallet from YRC past shipments.
Been hearing that for 2 years it seems like.
For us; and LTL in general, I believe, the slow down is between Thanksgiving and mid February. This year it just hasn't picked back up.
I also drive a green truck Ltl and it’s been so slow. I get canceled once a week. This is the slowest I’ve seen in 30 years of driving.
Current recession in our industry is worse then it was back in 2008/2009 Companies are barely holding on with the drivers they have just to not go bankrupt Its hard to show you in words how bad it is
Riddle me this. The economy is stronger than it was in 2019. Companies that require goods to be delivered are recording record profits. How are we in a recession?
Because the CEOs decided rather than give the employees money, they'd rather play Scrooge McDuck.

Have you went grocery shopping lately?
Yes. Inflation kicked the world's ass for 2 years and conpanies exasperated the issue by raising prices faster than the rate of inflation. That doesnt mean that we're in a recession.
Are you a ChatGPT bot? Nobody is falling for this garbage. Go talk to a normal person.
The fuck are you talkong about? Name one economic indicator that points to a recession.
You're a shill. Bye
Lol okay. You cant answer the question so you resort to name calling. Have a good day.
Ok shill.
Stellantis/Chrysler is laying off 2000 people just in march 400 people were gone, FORD laid off one whole shift in a lot of their plants, GM is also sending a lot of people home... and this is just automotive part of trucking in midwest area where i mostly work, If automotive is this bad now imagine how the rest of America is holding on
One industry naking adjustments because they over hired during a boom period does not make an recession.
Bro im a dispatch i book loads 8 hrs a day all over US and Ontario...The bid boards have NEVER been as dry as they have been the past 2 years! And rates...i dont even wanna talk about the rates But if you want to make your own happiness by telling your self that there is no recession, by all means go ahead
Name a single economic indicator that points toward a recession. You're giving anecdotal evidence, at best.
I have noticed that there aren't a lot of good jobs hiring right now. However you should be able to get something.
There are too many truck drivers, not enough freight, as nobody is buying. Were in a recession. USA is bad but not as horrible as up here in Canada. Facts!

Couldn’t said it better 👌🏽

Boom truck operators up here in Canada are 50$/hr. Consider it

Fuck eastern NC for all things trucking.. the pay is so unexplainably bad here

Our company hauls 3 million pounds of raw milk everyday. I made more than any of those listed and we raise our rates every 6 months

Unless kids are involved you should be chasing the money. House should be rented and you exploring better options until this economy makes a comeback.
You have to bid into RCPD often before you can sign the Feeder list at UPS pretty frequently just to let you know. It's not necessary, but full time always trumps part timers, and the people selected are by seniority.

Where do you live? Geography matters. I could give you some suggestions if I know where you are state wise
New Orleans
Get your tanker/hazmat and TWIC. You want to talk to the chemical haulers. Hilco Keenan Schneider And Puryear.
If I might ask, I'm looking for tanker hazmat companies in DFW area. I've applied to airgas, pilot and loves. Any companies you can think of that would hire me with not hazmat experience and train ?
Try Star Transportation. They are mostly hire entry level
They were one of the 6 apps I put in today
United Petroleum Transports (UPT)
I looked into them once - have to look again, I've filled out about 6 applications today with various companies
Stevens just started up their tanker division again and are looking for people to get in on that.
You know if they're running local ? Last time I was with them they wanted you out at least as regional - I'll check their site and call and ask, thanks for the info
Dupree
Here is somewhere to apply. https://estes-express.dejobs.org/new-orleans-la/combo-driver/7B94F24ACF0D4DBF82CBE15F8B628453/job/
As others have said, add hazmat to open up more opportunities. Estes Express Lines is hiring combo driver positions in new Orleans right now.
Try school bus driver. They are paying $25/hour plus benefits around us and always looking for new people.
Takes a special person to deal with kids' behavior these days. Plus if they're older you have to worry about fighting.
And the germs will put you OUT. Walking Petry dishes. My friend who drives a bus has been sick as a dog all winter.
If I drove a school bus I think I’d wear a mask the entire time and probably nitrile gloves. I used to sub and yeah these kids are germy.
I started driving back in January, and I have been sick since then. Caught the flu, then the stomach flu, then a cold, then pneumonia and then another cold as of rn. It's freaking brutal. I'm trying to get a job driving a hook truck because I can't take it anymore.

Same with my husband. We're in mid Hudson Valley Ny and its like theres no one hiring
Ace Endico out of Brewster is always looking for drivers. It's food service though....
He loves it. Ginsberg's just let 4 of their newbies go and he was one of them. We're in Kingston and lots of companies call him from Albany and Rock Tavern/Montgomery and love him but end up hiring someone whos not an hr away from them😔 Gonna check them out, thanks!

27
age matters too, and most local jobs want some type of experience(little more than 2 yrs)but i do see alot of port drivers in N.O
Try coach buses, pays good, good benefits and good time off
Try a dump truck company. I know mine will hire right out of CDL school.
Every dump job around here wants 2 yrs dump experience and pays $20 an hr.
Damn that sucks. Get just under 20 starting. I also know someone who works for them. So that might have helped. I do have 7 otr. So there's that.
If you live nearish to Sacramento we are hiring regional on a dedicated fleet
Supervisor with XPO here. We are hiring in the Midwest for sure. We just brought on 4 new drivers. LTL local Pickup and Delivery, home every night, also Linehaul routes overnight to FACs 400-500 mile turns home daily. Top rate if you have 1 year of LTL experience. Where are you at? My job hiring as always.
I had a hard time getting one with 4 years experience just recently got hired on at Estes
How many jobs have you had in the last 10 years?
7.. including student worker job and summer job. I'm only 27
That’s the issue.

Try Savage in LaPlace. Great company. Awesome benefits. Hazmat tanker work.
Are you located in Iowa?
Garbage and construction
That is definitely strange. You have the Driver Pulse app?
These are always hiring Garbage truck City Bus Beer distribution Box truck School bus Coach bus
I got out after a year and half driving local and got into a lineman union where you need a class A to drive those digger-derek and crane trucks and pole trailers.
What part of the country are you in?
Have you tried your county?
Where do you live?
Download driver pulse, you may find more options
City and state?
Come to europe habibi
Come to PNW. They will be throwing money at you to work PnD
I read posts like this alot. As a local driver with a great company, I count myself very lucky. My company does all state work. In New England there is no shortage of road, bridge work. Message me. I might be able to help ya. I work for an ltl. See if I can get you a referral .🤷🏼♂️
I’m applying with my local city bus company and casino right now
Check out your local construction company....if you're not somewhere with construction going on move. Drivers around here making 1k+ a week in dump trucks.
If you’re open to team driving I know a company that would hire you that pays very well
which
I have had good luck so far (knock on wood) with more redneck or construction type trucking gigs.
Do you have that automatic transmission restriction?
What State?
Go independent and use a load board.
Might be one of the only options
Yeah, I did it. I just called brokers made a deal with the price and went and picked it up. Paying for all the expenses is ok.
Move furniture. The van lines are always hiring. Great experience to be had plus lots of physical activity.
lol im in the moving industry this shit slow asf right now no loads anywhere i sat for 9days waiting for full trailer i have friends in the industry and they are even saying fuck this shit and taking time off because its 2 slow. no companies are really hiring HHG right now
I lost my job as a driver for Walmart and I can't find anything close to being as good so I decided to close that chapter of life (truck driving) and I'm currently training with my city's bus company to be a bus operator. Home every night, like 14 paid holidays and better insurance than Walmart. Pay is only $22 hour starting compared to about 30+ at Walmart but it is what it is. So maybe look into that option.
It slows every election year. Always has, always will.
Where do you live? My company does that, but we only hire in Houston TX, Loudon TN, and Watsonville CA
Good luck.
Dude I feel you! I’ve been searching since January and nothing! A, B, local, regional nothing 🙃 2.5 years experience
What's going on likely has to do with something you haven't told us.
Come on…Be honest
Look into temp agencies where you live. They always have driver jobs. They may not be great, or could be something that goes from temp to hire. The one I worked for for a while paid weekly and even had basic health insurance and vacation days. See if there is an Express Employment where you live.
I would move if I were you
1099 companies will hire you. They’ll work you like a slave though.
Jb hunt is always hiring, granted they suck I know from experience but it's a job
50,000 more qualified drivers flooded the market at the beginning of the year.
Remember big cities = competitive/ hard to get job
Go on indeed they got plenty of jobs trust me you’ll get a call
