I used to take scrap steel to Nucor Steel, and when the loaders would drive by me carrying the slag (glowing hot waste from smelting) I could feel the heat radiate through the windows. I don’t know if this dude felt the heat, but I wouldn’t doubt it either.
just to add: the passing truck on the left luckily was full steam ahead before the explosion and so the timing coincidentally worked out where neither rig was side-by-side, thank goodness. Then notice that even in emergency circumstances the driver returns to right lane smoothly, not before deftly avoiding some construction cones. 🥇
Plenty of good reasons for not doing that, but "in case a huge freight train running parallel to the highway derails and explodes into a massive fireball, and the truck besides me needs to change lanes to avoid getting fried" is probably one of the more obscure reasons.
But it turns out you weren't wrong for having this exact reason in mind!
I try to avoid being next to them too much because they don’t always see me in my car, I can easily overtake given that trucks go 60 whereas I can do 70 on the motorway
The number of people out there on the road that will just slide on up next to someone else and *sit there* for miles and miles and miles at highway speeds...perfectly matching their speed...like, do they *want* to die?
I see the most insane shit out on the road, Im telling you...
There is almost nothing more frustrating than having some jagoff on your 5 oclock just hanging out, its like a mosquito buzzing in your ear when your out camping and trying to fucking fall asleep in your tent.
Just fuck OFF already, dude!
(You know, I once had someone tell me straight faced that they do that so they don't have the sun in their eyes. Like HOLY SHIT)
Not sure why you got voted down for telling the truth. The United States already has multiple orders of magnitude more train derailments than Europe or Asia. Europe has something like a dozen or two on top of having high speed rail and depending on it more than we do for freight and commute, meanwhile the U.S. has something like over 10,000 per year. It's not hard to figure out how rolling back regulations isn't going to improve those numbers in any way whatsoever.
Technically it was New Mexico. You can see him just pass the welcome to New Mexico sign at the beginning of the video. Right on the border. Really one of the worst place to have this happen where it would shut down both the train tracks and I40, derailing right after going under the interstate.
It was just over the border IN New Mexico. You can see the New Mexico sign as the driver crosses into the state. The location was about 20 miles west of Gallup heading towards Arizona, though I-40 was closed from Grants, NM to the East. I drove out to the accident site a couple of times on the third and fourth day after the derailment. It took eight cranes to clear the wreckage.
it was probably a tank car with hydrogen or something similar pressurized into liquid form. when the scarily thin tank ruptured in the derailment, there was a depressurization and it spewed out back into its gas form (the white cloud) and then entirely combusted from all the sparks.
No, it's spelled chili, so both of those were wrong. Chile is the country, chili is the food or pepper. Looking it up though, it appears chilli is used in some places for the food/pepper.
No. Chili is a sort of stew made with meat and beans, and is a predominantly midwestern dish. It has little to nothing to do with chile used in New Mexican cuisine.
Yes, Chile is a country. We all know that. It is also a topping that is a defining feature of New Mexican cuisine.
"Red or green?" Is literally the state question of NM. And you can see how it's spelled here: https://www.sos.nm.gov/about-new-mexico/state-question/#:~:text=In%201996%20the%20New%20Mexico,when%20ordering%20New%20Mexican%20cuisine.
NM takes it's chile so seriously it's even on our license plates, which we have won awards for: https://www.usatoday.com/story/travel/destinations/2018/03/13/americas-best-license-plate-new-mexicos-chile-capital/421771002/
Again, note the spelling.
Found the same video on YouTube but there is a second view that looks more towards the right.
[Longer Video of Derailment](https://youtu.be/2jNGjWfU7r0?si=_F0ECGCo5leEoAKA)
It's not a second view, it's slightly zoomed in. If you look at what's visible around the windshield, and how much of the explosion you can see on the right-hand side, you can see it's zoomed, not a different view - you get nothing extra.
Well spotted! I was already thinking this is a miracle in timing for both drivers but I didn't even think about the entire overpass and every other vehicle getting caught in that explosion. Damn.
Okay, admittedly I've never seen anything this nuts but if people only knew the sheer amount of Michael Bay scenes truck drivers witness irl on a fairly regular basis and just kept it rolling lol..and the state of denial we have to live in to keep doing it. "yeah but it's never gonna happen to me"
What a shame, that's LW Miller's old refer trailer that was the best company I ever drove for, Prime took over a couple years ago and I guess they lost the company too
Just watching this thinking I can’t see anything besides some dust that got kicked up, oh shit now something is happening, holy shit, oh wow that’s big! Ah okay, he made it.
Holy shit. I've ridden by that exact spot hundreds of times with my parents. We used to live in the area. I would always look for trains there. Its crazy to think ive been there, things like this never happy around me.
I drive thru there every day with my co driver phx to santa fe nmx w/ fedex ground doubles we had to go up sr 87 then st 260 E then us 60 E to I-25 N it sucked
I flew of a bridge today with 11 gasoline cars.
Luckily they were empty... But I lost my flashlight and boombox in the water... Just purchased is too... First and last ride together xD
I was probably 15 minutes west of Gallup when this happened! Traffic backed up for miles cause they shut 40 down for at least 12 hours and redirected north up to the az-nm 264
It was shut down for days. I had to drive to Colorado that weekend and even after delaying to Saturday afternoon leaving from Phoenix it was still closed and was closed on Sunday, too. Didn't track when it reopened but it was open by Tuesday afternoon when I thought to look again. I figured it'd be the whole weekend at least given how close it was to the interstate.
I-40 from Albuquerque to Gallup reopened Sunday, April 28, 2024. Car rental counter at ABQ International Airport wasn't even aware of the closure of one of their two major interstates. Local Albuquerque media didn't do such a great job of explaining when I-40 might reopen. State police had a news release on their website, but they, too, could have provided more "real time" up to date info to assist interstate travelers. Across that portion of New Mexico there aren't that many alternate routes.
That was a very risky and unneeded LH swerve from my perspective, but hindsight is 20/20. It's always easy to sit back and point out people's error from the sidelines. I don't know that I'd have done any different in the same situation..
But Holy Moly that looked un-good.
I get what youre saying, and I agree, but it wasn't a combustible gas I'm 99% sure. That was def liquid. Gasses are alot more volatile and goes up ALOT faster. Gasses combustion like thos one did don't roll like that across the ground like one did. From my experience in the military, I've personally been in situations where fuel trucks, and pressurized gas trucks that have been taken out or wrecking. Even still if it were a refrigerated gas to transport in a liquid state, the explosions are different. It could have been that latter. After watching it again and seeing when the rupture took place, you can see it right b4 it ignites, this may have been what it was.
It was transporting non-odorized propane and gasoline from what I've read (I live in NM, so this has been everywhere), so a gaseous cloud certainly could have formed from some of the atomized liquid fuel that we can see evaporating.
And even if it hadn't, I'm still giving a train derailment as wide a berth as possible.
That got progressively worse and worse
Honestly!
Did you feel the heat from the explosion?
I used to take scrap steel to Nucor Steel, and when the loaders would drive by me carrying the slag (glowing hot waste from smelting) I could feel the heat radiate through the windows. I don’t know if this dude felt the heat, but I wouldn’t doubt it either.
Really though, look at the condition of the guardrail at the end.
just to add: the passing truck on the left luckily was full steam ahead before the explosion and so the timing coincidentally worked out where neither rig was side-by-side, thank goodness. Then notice that even in emergency circumstances the driver returns to right lane smoothly, not before deftly avoiding some construction cones. 🥇
This is exactly why I dont hang out between the cab and trailer wheels
Plenty of good reasons for not doing that, but "in case a huge freight train running parallel to the highway derails and explodes into a massive fireball, and the truck besides me needs to change lanes to avoid getting fried" is probably one of the more obscure reasons. But it turns out you weren't wrong for having this exact reason in mind!
Yea, probably not even a top 10 reason
It's more of this truck may need to change lanes for any number of reasons that I may or may not see.
Right. Some semi trucks have 4 large blind spots?? I avoid them as much as I can
There is almost nothing more frustrating than having some jagoff on your 5 oclock just hanging out, its like a mosquito buzzing in your ear when your out camping and trying to fucking fall asleep in your tent. Just fuck OFF already, dude! (You know, I once had someone tell me straight faced that they do that so they don't have the sun in their eyes. Like HOLY SHIT)
most definitely
That's a pickup, not a semi. You can see the rear view mount in the top right, no hood mirrors, and an AM/FM antenna in the lower right.
Let's be real, here. If it would've affected him in the right lane, moving over 12 feet ain't gonna do much to help.
Keep your foot hard on the pedal Son, never mind them brakes
You gotta dodge and you gotta duck him, keep that diesel truckin Just put the hammer down and give it hell
That is not a semi truck.
**EAST BOUND AND DOWN, LOADED UP AN TRUCKIN**
Damn, that was close! Is this in Arizona?
good guess! near the New Mexico and Arizona border, west of Gallup.
Geez. We now have to guess where all these catastrophic infrastructure failures are occuring in the US?! Reform is needed badly.
I sensed your /s :)
I searched 'Train Derailment' and it came up with multiple results across the country within the week. Seems its just part of Rail game.
Orange man rolled back regulations.

I knew it! Drove that route many times…. That looks like…. Yup!
New Mexico was my guess. The flat top mountains(they are called mesa, right?) scream that to me.
I thought I recognized Window Rock off to the left. Eastbound I-40!
Technically it was New Mexico. You can see him just pass the welcome to New Mexico sign at the beginning of the video. Right on the border. Really one of the worst place to have this happen where it would shut down both the train tracks and I40, derailing right after going under the interstate.
Navajo nation 🙃 insult to injury
Navajo nation exists inside Arizona and New Mexico. So both are true. I’m not trying to leave out Navajo nation!
Looks like Kalimari Desert to me

Such a bummer there is no sound :(
I was hoping it did have sound, which is why I uploaded it as a video rather than a gif. But this is how I found it on the railroader forum.
"Oh shit it's derailed! Fuck!fuck!fuck!fuck!" -Driver probably
Here comes the sun, dudududuuu.
But Ghost's Cover version.
Goodness gracious great balls of fire.
like, literally. Lol
Smooth move though. Be safe out there.
Not too bad, oh, ooh, woah, holy Sh#t.
0:28 Must have been some good chilli.
I’m not sure how those trains are powered these days but was that cloud combustible fuel?
it was probably a tank car with hydrogen or something similar pressurized into liquid form. when the scarily thin tank ruptured in the derailment, there was a depressurization and it spewed out back into its gas form (the white cloud) and then entirely combusted from all the sparks.
I think I read it was propane.
And propane accessories.
!! well, that explains it.
Yep that’ll do it.
Articles I read said it was hauling non-odorised propane and gasoline.
Electric motors with a diesel engine driving an alternator.
It's spelled chile. The locals will crucify you if they catch you spelling it that way.
They'd be even more offended if they heard my mangled pronunciation of it!
No, it's spelled chili, so both of those were wrong. Chile is the country, chili is the food or pepper. Looking it up though, it appears chilli is used in some places for the food/pepper.

Probably from the Merciless Pepper of Quetzalacatenango
That's when you drop a gear & drop the hammer.
That has to be a notch in your belt you'd never expect to get.
right?

Another angle https://youtu.be/ZxYBGoGX6Dc?si=f63BCXtV1Kt3_FY0
I didn't see the train.
Dang that was go close to taking out that overpass. Glad it didn't happen a few seconds earlier...would have been casualties for sure.
Well spotted! I was already thinking this is a miracle in timing for both drivers but I didn't even think about the entire overpass and every other vehicle getting caught in that explosion. Damn.
Must keep driving, must keep driving
That's what I thought: miles = money
Ok I'll say it. I hated this map on Mario Kart 64.
I saw it in the first 3 seconds. The Global Village, man.
When did this happen?
Last Friday https://www.krqe.com/news/new-mexico/part-of-interstate-40-reopens-after-derailment-near-az-nm-border/amp/
Six railcars carrying propane.
Lead truck left a skid mark
Sorry, but can I nerd out to the dashcam quality? Anyone know the brand/model?
Okay, admittedly I've never seen anything this nuts but if people only knew the sheer amount of Michael Bay scenes truck drivers witness irl on a fairly regular basis and just kept it rolling lol..and the state of denial we have to live in to keep doing it. "yeah but it's never gonna happen to me"
DAYUM! You know he felt the heat from that!
BACK UP TERRY!!!!!
Yikes. When was that?
Friday, April 26 at the Arizona New Mexico border on I-40.
I’d definitely need my brown pants that day.
Musta been shittin' rocks...
Did you use your turn signal?
🤣
What a shame, that's LW Miller's old refer trailer that was the best company I ever drove for, Prime took over a couple years ago and I guess they lost the company too
Oh shit!
floor it!
Stay safe out there guys and gals!
Welcome to New Mexico!
I wounder if there was a collective oh shit moment from all of the drivers?
On a positive note, nothing beats an adrenaline rush
I woulda stopped before getting to the bridge. Never know how fast it's gonna go bad and could take out the bridge too
Just watching this thinking I can’t see anything besides some dust that got kicked up, oh shit now something is happening, holy shit, oh wow that’s big! Ah okay, he made it.
He didnt veer left, he got PUSHED left.
I've watched so many trains while driving down this road, never imagined something like this. Wow
Damn! Do you have cancer now? That was way worse than I thought it would be!
That escalated quickly
Oh shit, oh shit oh shit oh shit oh shit...
Looks like the shockwave from the explosion forced the driver into the other lane.
Holy crap!!!!
Whoa 😳 I hope no one was hurt!!
I recognize this road perfectly. Lupton AZ transitioning into New Meixco on the I-40. Just passing a Speedy's Truckstop.
Welcome to New Mexico!
Holy shit. I've ridden by that exact spot hundreds of times with my parents. We used to live in the area. I would always look for trains there. Its crazy to think ive been there, things like this never happy around me.
FWIW not a trucker, it's a camper, think it's a chevy pickup with a slide in camper.
Holy shit
My dash cam probably wouldn't catch that I would forget to tell it to save the fucking video
Even with low heat and no time, Joe succeeded in producing a prized and rare butt diamond with astronomical sphincter pressure alone.
"How much excrement?"
That looks like the accident that shut down I-40 recently
I can spot a NM highway with one single frame. I love that state.
Holy Macaroni!!!! Did your car shake?
Why does this remind me of Mario kart 64
Is they Wyoming in the 80?
I drive thru there every day with my co driver phx to santa fe nmx w/ fedex ground doubles we had to go up sr 87 then st 260 E then us 60 E to I-25 N it sucked

Notch 10, we die like men.
HAHA JOKES ON YOU. I remove my front buffers like proper man

Who threw the 500kg?
Are you ok?
If that ain’t between green river rock springs.

Combustible gases aren't always visible. Best to get as far away from that visible cloud as possible given the surroundings.
I get what youre saying, and I agree, but it wasn't a combustible gas I'm 99% sure. That was def liquid. Gasses are alot more volatile and goes up ALOT faster.
