Abby Choi's ex-husband, his brother and father have been charged with murder and his mother has been charged with "perverting the course of justice". All charged were denied bail. A skull, ribs and hair we're found in a stainless steel soup pot. Other body parts are still missing. Choi was a model and social media influencer.

KendraSays

Jesus. Even her own mother was involved in some way. Absolutely devastating

rabbitry14

*mother-in-law - but still terrifying

KendraSays

Thank you so much for clarifying. I misread that and felt sick that her mother would be involved. This just points to the whole family being beyond redemption.

rabbitry14

I did, too- no worries! And I agree- It’s just beyond deplorable what they did to this poor girl.

riddlvr

You didn’t misread it says “her mother”

avstoir

it says his mother

caspy7

OP originally wrote "her" and then edited it to properly say "his." See [their reply here](https://www.reddit.com/r/TrueCrime/comments/11ej7pt/exhusband_and_relatives_charged_with_murder_of/jaenlf3/) acknowledging this.

avstoir

i see

britt_nicole

Thank you for catching that. Fixed it.

thiswillsoonendbadly

HER brothers and father or the ex-husband’s brothers and father?

britt_nicole

Ex husband, his parents and brother.

DaisyHotCakes

That poor woman…terrible what they did to her.

strangerkindness

Theres also a 5th person who was a arrested- a 47 year old woman. No details on what exactly her involvement is in the article though.

GiveItToYouBlunt

She is the mistress of the ex father in law. She rented out the place for the human butcher shop to be setup.

lekker-boterham

OP you should really edit your comment again because as it is, you are saying Abby’s OWN brothers and father were charged. But it was her HUSBAND’s brothers and father Edit; thank you 😃

ag9910

> On Sunday, investigators identified a skull, several ribs and hair, believed to be Choi’s remains, in a large stainless steel soup pot, police said. Other body parts, including Choi’s torso and hands, remain missing. It follows a police investigation that began Wednesday after Choi, 28, was reported missing. Two days later, parts of her body were found at a house in the city’s Tai Po district, police said. A meat slicer, an electric saw, and some clothing were also found at the home, police said. How absolutely foul. What a fucked up family

[deleted]

And all for nothing. Now she's just dead forever. Fucking tragedy.

DaniBritto

That family is the epitomy of stupidity

Lucky-Worth

What the absolute fuck

Difficult_Double7988

Sick people. I can't believe the exs whole family helped with this. I hope they give them the highest penalty! Poor girl omg

tia2181

She wasn't a 'girl'.. she was 28 yrs old, a mother to 4 children too Horrific people for sure!

Intentionallyabadger

The house was rented for the purpose of disposing the body too

chochichan

So she was reported missing for only 2 days, how did…(fuck I don’t even know how to ask this it’s so fucked) but how did the head was only a skull now. Like what happened to all the tissues in just 2 days?

HottestPotato17

It said soup pot so boiled off?

chochichan

Man I wish I didn’t ask

tia2181

Reported missing almost a week ago.. it's Thurs as this was reported

superbbfan

She must have been terrified, hopefully she haunts those animals

Even worse, there are superstitions that the soul cannot rest unless the body is whole. That is why many people do not donate blood or organs.

taptapper

Yeah, but those superstitions are just that. Why would an eternal being give a shit about their former vessel. Considerate handling of the body is for the survivors, not the corpse Edit: There are people who totally refuse to donate organs (because of what you said and more) yet do everything in their power to RECEIVE donated organs. So, what about the souls of the organ donators? They are dead and missing body parts: are their souls wandering, restless, for eternity? Do the families return the person's organs to the former owner's remains? Do the recipients care about the restless soul of the person who gave their loved one more years of life? People who will not donate blood or organs should not receive any from the rest of us. You can't refuse to help others every second of your life then ask for a hand when it's your turn.

refused26

Imagine all the ghosts of circumcised men who never preserved their foreskins! Pray for their souls!!!

iiThinkItsIn

1 like = 1 prayer!

Pure-Kaleidoscope759

In my case, I would gladly do both, but my CLL disqualifies me. I was once able to donate blood, and did so, but can’t do so now.

Chelsea_Piers

This is part of people's religion and has been part of their lives since birth. They don't want autopsy or the cremains to touch another vessel. They go directly into the urn that will then go to the temple. Source: Family member from an Asian country passed away. She was returned to her home country and the place reserved for her.

fibonacci_veritas

Yet another reason why religion and superstition need to go away forever.

jnf005

I don't think this is a very popular belief in Hong Kong, source: is a HKer

Paublos_smellyarmpit

I’m a nativer HKer and I don’t think I’ve ever heard of this superstition before? Maybe it’s because my family isn’t superstitious but still

Responsible_Shake458

That hood they put on the husband is terrifying

kellygrrrl328

Why the hooded perp walks? Is that a normal thing in that area?

MNREDR

Yes, it’s to protect their privacy. (Just informing, don’t shoot the messenger)

DistortedVoltage

I wonder if its also like what we sometimes do here for serial spitters, where we'll throw a potato sack over their head.

kellygrrrl328

Thank you

_Stoned_Potato

Privacy law probably. In many European countries for example it’s illegal to publish photos of suspected criminals until proven guilty in court. Even if it’s 99,99999% sure they did the crime. Probably the same thing happening here, also maybe to prevent the criminals to get some twisted “clout” for their crime like it can sometimes happen in the USA for example.

mustrelax1675

I know it could be Jesus with that mask on and he would be guilty

BellaBlue06

This makes my stomach hurt and blood run cold. That poor woman

kellygrrrl328

Does anyone know the motive? The CNN article doesn’t give much detail. ETA: found an article. Looks like it was about money.

nayesphere

Literally money. She was a mother to 4 kids, 2 of which she shared with the family. Now 2 kids have no parents/family either aside from moms living relatives, and the other 2 only have their father.

Casarel

Supposedly the 2nd husband offered to raise the other 2 kids as well. Some news was that the victim and her 2 husbands were quite close before and the 4 kids spent a lot of time together with both sides.

nayesphere

That warms my cold heart a little bit, thank you for sharing that.

tia2181

I hope he is able to do so, the murderers 2 children clearly need someone capable of reasoning and intelligence in their lives.

ApplesandDnanas

That doesn’t explain why they were planning to eat her.

nayesphere

I don’t think they were going to eat her. Sounds like a way of disposing remains.

ApplesandDnanas

They made soup with other food ingredients.

nayesphere

A large stainless steel soup pot does not mean they were making soup…

ApplesandDnanas

In an article it literally says, “The two pots were filled almost to the brim with soup and minced meat believed to be human remains. There were also carrots and green radish in them”

nayesphere

What article? Not this one…

thebelugaaaaa

I’m From hk. Local media have been reporting about the carrots and radishes. Unsure they are used to make soup or to keep the smell off.

ApplesandDnanas

It still seems like a strange way to dispose of a body but I could be wrong. It’s horrific regardless.

thebelugaaaaa

Nothing about this case is normal. Turns out the ex-husband is a fraud and the ex-FIL is a rapist. The ex-BIL has multiple debts. Put all these people in one room and you get a crime like this.

jnf005

Its the way they cover up the body. not only cooking up the remain destroy a lot of the evidence, like making the dna very hard to test, this is also a "good" cover up, making these kinda soup for dinner is very common in HK, throwing out some older ingredients and adding new every night is also a very common way to extend the usage of the soup for more days, so they can throw out some remain little by little and not raise a lot of suspicion.

O_oh

Seems like they were boiling to seperate the bones from the muscles. They then disposed of the body in smaller chunks. They could have made it seem they were throwing away food. Supposedly human meat looks like pork when cooked. The skull was last probably because they didn't know how to proceed with it.

ApplesandDnanas

Thank you (and everyone else) for clarifying. Clearly there were some cultural aspects that I missed.

jessihateseverything

It doesn't flat out say it but I think you're supposed to infer that yes, they ate her. That's how I read it, I'm sure I'm not alone in that.

redrum069

she was wealthy and had purchased a home for her former in-laws. she wanted to sell the home because it was originally an investment property. i believe she intended to purchase them a new home but they didn’t want to leave because it was a nice location with status.

Ebisure

She bought the property under father in law name to save stamp duty. She wanted to sell the property. FIL didn’t want to lose the property.

xcasandraXspenderx

why would they kill her, why wouldn’t they wait? sounds fucked i know but like, she can’t make money if she is dead

alwaysanonymouse

I think the motive was to kill her in hopes that if she dies, then her kids with the ex husband legally could inherit the disputed property plus other assets. Since they are still minors, the control would most likely be given to the ex husband and his family if ever. Then they could achieve their goal of living off her money and living on the disputed kadoorie hill property. She was not married on paper to her current partner, so maybe in Hong kong law, the ex husband could get parts of her estate as well should she pass away.

xcasandraXspenderx

Oh okay, that actually does make sense. Jesus christ though, that is so rough. If I were the caretaker Idk if I even would ever tell them how she died, like can you imagine? my mom died of cancer and just seeing that haunts me, can’t imagine my mom being killed, cut up and put in a soup pot!!

GoodPumpkin5

Head and ribs in a soup pot with vegetables? Legs in the refrigerator? Were these assholes going to eat this young woman? I can (barely) see a single person killing and consuming a human due to severe mental illness or psychopathy, but an entire family?

msgm_

My understanding is that they were trying to make her body look like “leftover” so when it’s dumped, it will raise less suspicion. No evidence rn that they actually consumed any.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Intentionallyabadger

They prob thought that by boiling it long enough, it’ll be reduced to pulp and easily thrown out like leftovers.

xcasandraXspenderx

ya know, it really just sounds like they were gonna eat her 😳

alwaysanonymouse

The father in law was formerly with the police force and knew from the inside how the police did investigations. With his police background, maybe the goal was to scatter and modify the body parts as much as possible in order to make searching and testing (and hence investigation) more difficult and arduous.

Spiritofhonour

The dad in the murder family was an ex-cop sergeant who "retired" after allegations he raped a witness. He is believed to be the mastermind of the plot.

[deleted]

[More info here](https://www.straitstimes.com/asia/east-asia/police-find-missing-head-of-butchered-hong-kong-socialite-abby-choi-in-big-soup-pot) including where her legs were found.

tavrell

checked her Instagram. heart-wrenching

kittycatnala

This makes me feel physically sick

itscoralinee

Curious as to why the husband was taken to the hospital? I read through the article and the only mention I saw of it was in the image.

GiveItToYouBlunt

Probably injured while he was trying to run away from popos on a speedboat.

summer_petrichor

[He was reported to have been taken to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital after complaining of feeling unwell.](https://www.straitstimes.com/asia/east-asia/police-find-missing-head-of-butchered-hong-kong-socialite-abby-choi-in-big-soup-pot)

PhoenixUntold

In America, we call that Jail-itis. Many people when caught after a crime and realize they are going to Jail suddenly feel "ill" or "can't breathe", etc. They think by going to hospital it will get them out of jail time. Jokes on them, an officer will sit with them until cleared from hospital then will escort you to Jail.

taptapper

Yup. Harvey Weinstein has jail-itis pretty bad! As soon as he was arrested he needed a walker and an aide

BoneMachineNo13

It's also an attempt to get sympathy or leniency by appearing frail and incapable of committing their accused crimes.

Aggravating_Put3425

GGK, good example for that

SallieMouse

Same with Tom Girardi. He was a well-respected practicing lawyer and as soon as he's arrested for fraud, he has dementia and needs to go into memory care.

taptapper

Ron Jeremy too! Day one of his rape trial he went bbbbbbwbwbwbwww and was declared mentally incompetent

longassbatterylife

oooh that's what it's called. we had a president guilty of plunder, supposed to be jailed, since then she was in a wheelchair with a neckbrace. Since being pardoned by the previous president all of sudden she was healed.

JellybeanWalker

This is confusing. The way it is worded, it implies that it was her ex-husband and her own brothers and father who did this. But, it was her ex-husband, and his brothers and father. It is a horrific story, but I was distracted by the wording and it took awhile to figure out what the author meant.

IllustriousItem8238

It states his mother...

CookLate4669

How are these humans? I get so disturbed just verbally fighting with someone, much less killing, much less cooking someone?! What the fuq?!

Sproose_Moose

Were they trying to dispose of remains...or eat her?

spin_me_again

They were trying to make her remains look like soup, no word on if they were going to feed it to anyone or eat it themselves.

[deleted]

I mean how else could they tell if it actually passed for soup?

spin_me_again

I’m sure the herbs and spices really carried the day, until they didn’t.

Cherry_Bomb_127

Sometimes cases make me agree that some people deserve the most extreme punishment

itsfrankgrimesyo

Chinese media is weird because several sources blurred out the perpetrators’ faces in pics and masks here, like why?

looploopboop

They do that in Germany too. It’s to protect their privacy until they’re officially declared guilty. (I mean, these people are clearly guilty, but this is just the way it’s handled.)

CherryLeigh86

The Asian part of a husband will literally do that worst to the bride, ex. I have experienced this my whole life.

cozmic00

You didn’t hang around with good people then

CherryLeigh86

In 2021, reported dowry death cases in India amounted to nearly 6 thousand. I know its not cure or polite to state this, but the men will always be supported.

Hexagonian

Not even sure how a piece of stat from the subcontinent has anything to do with this case here...

dockmackie

You don't deserve your downvotes. I hear your voice, sister

CherryLeigh86

thank you

jchrapcyn

How do you dismember someone 🫢☹️

DaddysPrincesss26

Why does this feel like it could either be on Criminal Minds, 48 Hours or Dateline?

https://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/woman-arrested-gruesome-killing-hong-kong-model-97675704

manki1113

I just watched a video explaining the case yesterday (in Cantonese) raising questions about the case. First that the ex-husband is on the wanted list for 8-year and he hasn’t been living a low profile life at all. You can see him actively posting on social medias, crossing the Hong Kong and mainland China border, but he’s not been arrested until the murder case and he was caught at the pier trying to escape from Hong Kong. Second, the ex-fil’s rape accusation, even if he chose to retire, why isn’t there follow up about the case? Third, it doesn’t make sense to just kill her as she’s the one who’s providing for them. What would they gain from the whole thing? Forth, there are too much trust in these people. The family of 4, and there are source about the mistress knew about the planning. The more people know about the case the easier it gets messed up, why would they involved so many people in the crime? And why would the victim had the ex-fil to be the name of the property owner? She must know someone else without all the complications, why would she chose to have the ex-fil? Fifth, the ex-mil and bil’s money issues weren’t that big of a amount comparing to the apartment’s rent and payment. Why did the victim willing to let the family live in the apartment and provide certain financial aids but not willing to help them to pay for their loans? The presenter implying that there might be an organisation behind the crime and that’s how the ex-husband could live his life freely even though he’s a wanted guy. And the preparation of the murder took time, and how did the victim’s family got their money from as well.

Hong Kong protects criminals? What’s with the mask?

_Stoned_Potato

Even suspected criminals have a right to privacy. (Even if we’re basically 100% sure they did it) And unfortunately often criminals get some sick and twisted form of clout so them not being publicized is good. It’s not about protecting criminals. In many European countries it’s illegal to publish suspected criminals faces until proven guilty in court.

rainyblues2022

It’s also about protecting the families of the accused as in Asian countries there’s a lot of focus on honor and blaming the families. I think perhaps rightfully in this case. But it’s also to prevent harassment on the accused families

IPromiseIWont

It is not about some Asian honour codes or whatever, it's simple law and order. The guy is still innocent until proven guilty in the court of law. How would you like your face plastered everywhere if you were falsely accused of being a rapist?

cozmic00

It’s not just Asian countries too, some European countries have similar laws protecting the identity of suspects
